Using Cyclical Components To Improve The Forecasts Of The Stock Market And Macroeconomic Variables, Kenneth R. Szulczyk, Shibley Sadique

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Economic variables such as stock market indices, interest rates, and national output measures contain cyclical components. Forecasting methods excluding these cyclical components yield inaccurate out-of-sample forecasts. Accordingly, a three-stage procedure is developed to estimate a vector autoregression (VAR) with cyclical components. A Monte Carlo simulation shows the procedure estimates the parameters accurately. Subsequently, a VAR with cyclical components improves the root-mean-square error of out-of-sample forecasts by 50% for a stock market model with macroeconomic variables.

SrMnSb2 is a candidate Dirac semimetal whose electrons near the Y point have the linear dispersion and low mass of a Dirac cone. Here we demonstrate that ultrafast, 800-nm optical pulses can launch coherent phonon oscillations in Sr0.94Mn0.92Sb2, particularly an Ag mode at 4.4 THz. Through first-principles calculations of the electronic and phononic structure of SrMnSb2, we show that high-amplitude oscillations of this mode would displace the atoms in a way that transiently opens and closes a gap at the node of the Dirac cone. An Integral Triune Model Of Human Consciousness And Its Implications To Cancer Treatment, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

To emphasize what we have outlined in a preceding paper, we consider the following: that human consciousness model should take into consideration “spirit” role, i.e. the mind-body-spirit as integral aspect, which view is neglected in the so-called Freudian mental model. In this paper, we consider two approaches to cancer treatment derived from such an integral triune view of human consciousness, including (a) healing frequency approach as advised by Royal Rife and David Hawkins, and also (b) relational therapy, based on recent research on the healing role of love and compassion.

From Rankings To Ratings: Rank Scoring Via Active Learning, Jack O'Neill, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee

In this paper we present RaScAL, an active learning approach to predicting real-valued scores for items given access to an oracle and knowledge of the overall item-ranking. In an experiment on six different datasets, we find that RaScAL consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art. The RaScAL algorithm represents one step within a proposed overall system of preference elicitations of scores via pairwise comparisons.

Due to urban expansion, economic development, and rapid population growth, land use/land cover (LULC) is changing in major cities around the globe. Quantitative analysis of LULC change is important for studying the corresponding impact on the ecosystem service value (ESV) that helps in decision-making and ecosystem conservation. Based on LULC data retrieved from remote-sensing interpretation, we computed the changes of ESV associated with the LULC dynamics using the benefits transfer method and geographic information system (GIS) technologies during the period of 1992–2018 following self-modified coefficients which were corrected by net primary productivity (NPP). The plasma arising due to the propagation of a filamenting ultrafast laser pulse in air contains currents driven by the pulse that generate radiated electromagnetic fields. We report absolutely calibrated measurements of the frequency spectrum of microwaves radiated by the filament plasma from 2–40 GHz. The emission pattern of the electric field spectrum is mapped as a function of air pressure from atmosphere to 0.5 Torr. For fixed laser pulse energy, duration, and focal geometry, we observe that decreasing the air pressure by a factor of approximately 103 increases the amplitude of the electric field waveform by a factor of …

The center-surround receptive field structure, ubiquitous in the visual system, is hypothesized to be evolutionarily advantageous in image processing tasks. We address the potential functional benefits and shortcomings of spatial localization and center-surround antagonism in the context of an integrate-and-fire neuronal network model with image-based forcing. Utilizing the sparsity of natural scenes, we derive a compressive-sensing framework for input image reconstruction utilizing evoked neuronal firing rates. We investigate how the accuracy of input encoding depends on the receptive field architecture, and demonstrate that spatial localization in visual stimulus sampling facilitates marked improvements in natural scene processing beyond uniformly-random excitatory connectivity. …

The case fatality and illness rates associated with L. monocytogenes continue to pose a serious public health burden despite the significant efforts and control protocol administered by private and public sectors. Due to the advance in surveillance and improvement in detection methodology, the knowledge of sources, transmission routes, growth potential in food process units and storage, effect of pH and temperature are well understood.
