A Maximum Entropy Method For Solving The Boundary Value Problem Of Second Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Congming Jin, Jiu Ding
A Maximum Entropy Method For Solving The Boundary Value Problem Of Second Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Congming Jin, Jiu Ding
Faculty Publications
We propose a new method to solve the boundary value problem for a class of second order linear ordinary differential equations, which has a non-negative solution. The method applies the maximum entropy principle to approximating the solution numerically. The theoretical analysis and numerical examples show that our method is convergent.
Building Confidence In The Dirac Δ-Function, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Constantin Rasinariu
Building Confidence In The Dirac Δ-Function, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Constantin Rasinariu
Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In this note we present an example from undergraduate quantum mechanics designed to highlight the versatility of the Dirac δ-function. Namely, we compute the expectation value of the Hamiltonian of a free particle in a state described by a triangular wave function ψ(x). Since the first derivative of ψ(x) is piecewise constant, and because this Hamiltonian is proportional to the second order spatial derivative, students often end up finding the expectation value to be zero—an unphysical answer. This problem provides a pedagogical application of the Dirac δ-function. By arriving at the same result via alternate pathways, this exercise reinforces students’ …
The Battle Between Impeccable Intonation And Maximized Modulation, Timothy M. True
The Battle Between Impeccable Intonation And Maximized Modulation, Timothy M. True
Musical Offerings
Equal temperament represents a way of completing the musical circle, and systematically compensating for the Pythagorean comma. Pythagoras discovered this acoustical problem around 550 B.C., and since that time music theorists have debated how to deal with it. The problem is that no perfect solution exists—something must be compromised. As musical styles developed, specific factors and harmonic tendencies led to the gradual adoption of equal temperament. Early in music history, theorists preferred systems which kept acoustical purity relatively intact. Pythagorean intonation and just intonation serve as two examples. However, the move from modality to tonality decentralized the melody as the …
How We Done It Good: Research Through Design As A Legitimate Methodology For Librarianship, Rachel Ivy Clarke
How We Done It Good: Research Through Design As A Legitimate Methodology For Librarianship, Rachel Ivy Clarke
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
“How we done it good” publications—a genre concerning project-based approaches that describe how (and sometimes why) something was done—are often rebuked in the library research community for lacking traditional scientific validity, reliability, and generalizability. While scientific methodologies may be a common approach to research and inquiry, they are not the only methodological paradigms. This research posits that the “how we done it good” paradigm in librarianship reflects a valid and legitimate approach to research. By drawing on the concept of research through design, this study shows how these “how we done it good” projects reflect design methodologies which draw …

A Comprehensive Analysis Of Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Data. Iv. Spectral Lag And Its Relation To E P Evolution, Rui-Jing Lu, Yun-Feng Liang, Da-Bin Lin, Jing Lü, Xiang-Gao Wang, Hou-Jun Lü, Hong-Bang Liu, En-Wei Liang, Bing Zhang
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
The spectral evolution and spectral lag behavior of 92 bright pulses from 84 gamma-ray bursts observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) telescope are studied. These pulses can be classified into hard-to-soft pulses (H2S; 64/92), H2S-dominated-tracking pulses (21/92), and other tracking pulses (7/92). We focus on the relationship between spectral evolution and spectral lags of H2S and H2S-dominated-tracking pulses. The main trend of spectral evolution (lag behavior) is estimated with ( ), where E p is the peak photon energy in the radiation spectrum, t + t 0 is the observer time relative to the beginning of pulse −t …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
In this study, the electrical resistivity and magnetization of a single crystal of Ce2Ni3Ge5 heavy fermion compound were performed under pressure. The resistivity and magnetization showed two antiferromagnetic transitions at ambient pressure. On applying pressure, the transitions merged at 1 GPa. At higher pressures, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature decreases, and disappears. It is suggesting that the critical pressure of Ce2Ni3Ge5 was 4.1 GPa.

Modern marine biologists seeking to study or interact with deep-sea organisms are confronted with few options beyond industrial robotic arms, claws, and suction samplers. This limits biological interactions to a subset of “rugged” and mostly immotile fauna. As the deep sea is one of the most biologically diverse and least studied ecosystems on the planet, there is much room for innovation in facilitating delicate interactions with a multitude of organisms. The biodiversity and physiology of shallow marine systems, such as coral reefs, are common study targets due to the easier nature of access; SCUBA diving allows for in situ delicate …

The combination of consumer’s ongoing demand for chia (Salvia hispanica L.) alongside the increased demand for regionally produced food products provided the impetus for this study. Its aim was to test if a regional cultivation of new chia genotypes, which were adapted to day lengths greater than 12 h, is feasible under Central European conditions. Therefore, three early flowering chia genotypes (Sahi Alba 914, W13.1, G8) were cultivated in a randomized block design at two experimental stations in Southwestern Germany (Ihinger Hof, Eckartsweier) over the course of two years (2015, 2016). Mean yields ranged from 100 to 1290 kg …

Assessment Of Surface Wind Datasets For Estimating Offshore Wind Energy Along The Central California Coast, Yi-Hui Wang, Ryan K. Walter, Crow White, Hayley Farr, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg
Physics
In the United States, Central California has gained significant interest in offshore wind energy due to its strong winds and proximity to existing grid connections. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of near-surface wind datasets in this region, including satellite-based observations (QuikSCAT, ASCAT, and CCMP V2.0), reanalysis (NARR and MERRA), and regional atmospheric models (WRF and WIND Toolkit). This work highlights spatiotemporal variations in the performance of the respective datasets in relation to in-situ buoy measurements using error metrics over both seasonal and diurnal time scales. The two scatterometers(QuikSCAT and ASCAT) showed the best overall performance, albeit with significantly …

Aerosol properties are transformed by atmospheric processes during long-range transport and play a key role in the Earth's radiative balance. To understand the molecular and physical characteristics of free tropospheric aerosol, we studied samples collected at the Pico Mountain Observatory in the North Atlantic. The observatory is located in the marine free troposphere at 2225m above sea level, on Pico Island in the Azores archipelago. The site is ideal for the study of long-range-transported free tropospheric aerosol with minimal local influence. Three aerosol samples with elevated organic carbon concentrations were selected for detailed analysis. FLEXPART retroplumes indicated that two of …

The environmental fate of the tungstate (VI) oxyanion [ e.g. mono tungstate and several polytungstate, generally expressed by W (VI)] is largely controlled by sorption on soil minerals, especially on iron oxide minerals. Molecular scale evaluation of W (VI) retention on iron oxides in the presence of competing oxyanions is scarce in literature. Here we report surface interaction mechanisms of W (VI) on hematite in the presence of phosphate (P) using macroscopic and in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic experiments. Batch sorption experiments were conducted using 2 g L−1 hematite and 100 μM W (VI) and …

A magnetoelectric memory cell with domain - wall - mediated switching is implemented using a split gate architecture . The split gate architecture allows a domain wall to be trapped within a magnetoelectric antiferromagnetic ( MEAF ) active layer . An extension of this architecture applies to multiple gate linear arrays that can offer advantages in memory density , programmability , and logic functionality . Applying a small anisotropic in - plane shear strain to the MEAF can block domain wall precession to improve reliability and speed of switching

Dft-Assisted Design And Evaluation Of Bifunctional Amine/Pyridine-Oxazoline Metal Catalysts For Additions Of Ketones To Unactivated Alkenes And Alkynes, Eric Greve, Jacob D. Porter, Chris Dockendorff
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Bifunctional catalyst systems for the direct addition of ketones to unactivated alkenes/alkynes were designed and modeled by density functional theory (DFT). The designed catalysts possess bidentate ligands suitable for binding of pi-acidic group 10 metals capable of activating alkenes/alkynes, and a tethered organocatalyst amine to activate the ketone via formation of a nucleophilic enamine intermediate. The structures of the designed catalysts before and after C–C bond formation were optimized using DFT, and reaction steps involving group 10 metals were predicted to be significantly exergonic. A novel oxazoline precatalyst with a tethered amine separated by a meta-substituted benzene spacer was synthesized …

Technetium carbonates complexes produced by chemical, electrochemical and radiolytic methods have been studied by UV-Visible, X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) and Density Functional Theory methods. The (NH4)2TcCl6 salt was dissolved in 2 M KHCO3. The resulting purple solution was analyzed by XAFS and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The UV-Visible spectra exhibits a band centered at 515 nm. The XAFS results were consistent with the presence of polymeric species containing the [Tc2(μ−O)2]4+ core coordinated to carbonate ligand. Concerning the electrochemical methods, the pertechnetate anion was electrochemically reduced in concentrated carbonate solution [(CO32−)=5 M and (HCO3−)=0.5 M]. For the radiolytic reduction, the speciation of …

Phosphonium Hydrogels For Controlled Release Of Ionic Cargo., Tristan D Harrison, Paul J Ragogna, Elizabeth R Gillies
Chemistry Publications
We describe the synthesis of three different phosphonium salts and their reaction with poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate to create cationic hydrogels. The hydrogels were loaded with an anionic dye and an anionic anti-inflammatory drug through ionic interactions and compared with an analogous ammonium gel. The release rates of these anions depended on their structure and pKa values, as well as the pH and ionic strength of the release medium.

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This research herein examines the statewide motivations, specializations, identities, and constraints of Nebraska resident hunters. An online survey was conducted in the fall of 2017 asking respondents about their motivations, skills, demographics, and constraints to personal hunting experiences to determine what factors affect hunters. We used factor analysis to examine the effect of motivations, specializations, and constraints to see which factors influence participation. By understanding multiple attributes of our hunters, we gain further insight into participation trends and recreationists needs and expectations. Results suggested that our biggest constraint to overcome is land access, while most people are motivated to hunt …

Cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) has emerged as an enabling biotechnology for research and biomanufacturing as it allows for the production of protein without the need for a living cell. Applications of CFPS include the construction of libraries for functional genomics and structural biology, the production of personalized medicine, and the expression of virus-like particles. The absence of a cell wall provides an open platform for direct manipulation of the reaction conditions and biological machinery. This project focuses on adapting the CFPS biotechnology to the classroom, making a hands-on bioengineering approach to learning protein synthesis accessible to students grades K-16 through …

Over the last several decades, computer games started to have a significant impact on society. However, although a computer game is a type of software, the process to conceptualize, produce and deliver a game could involve unusual features. In software testing, for instance, studies demonstrated the hesitance of professionals to use automated testing techniques with games, due to the constant changes in requirements and design, and pointed out the need for creating testing tools that take into account the flexibility required for the game development process. Goal. This study aims to improve the current body of knowledge regarding software …

Numerical Ruin Probability In The Dual Risk Model With Risk-Free Investments, Sooie-Hoe Loke, Enrique Thomann
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
In this paper, a dual risk model under constant force of interest is considered. The ruin probability in this model is shown to satisfy an integro-differential equation, which can then be written as an integral equation. Using the collocation method, the ruin probability can be well approximated for any gain distributions. Examples involving exponential, uniform, Pareto and discrete gains are considered. Finally, the same numerical method is applied to the Laplace transform of the time of ruin.

Recent measurements made with magnetic microcalorimeter (MMC) particle detectors at UNM demonstrated a pronounced sensitivity to noise induced by the rotary valve drive electronics of our Cryomech PT405 pulse-tube refrigerator. After consultation with Cryomech, we undertook to develop a new drive electronics that is fullydifferential, well-grounded, and fully linear, with no digital components all the way out to the wall socket. The design goal was to develop a drive electronics that could potentially be used inside an RF-shielded room for the most sensitive SQUID-based measurements. In this report we describe the circuit design and highly successful test results showing that …

Evolutionary Applications published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Reproduced with the permission of the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Two genetically distinct lineages of European green crabs (Carcinus maenas) were independently introduced to eastern North America, the first in the early 19th century and the second in the late 20th century. These lineages first came into secondary contact in southeastern Nova Scotia, Canada (NS), where they hybridized, producing latitudinal genetic clines. Previous studies have documented a persistent southward shift in the clines of different marker types, consistent with existing dispersal and recruitment pathways. We evaluated current clinal structure …
