Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present possible observing scenarios for the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-wave detectors over the next decade, with the intention of providing information to the astronomy community to facilitate planning for multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves. We estimate the sensitivity of the network to transient gravitational-wave signals, and study the capability of the network to determine the sky location of the source. We report our findings for gravitational-wave transients, with particular focus on gravitational-wave signals from the inspiral of binary neutron star systems, which are the most promising targets for multi-messenger astronomy. The ability to localize the sources …
Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Interactions Of Amino Acids Side Chains With The Guanine Radical Cation., Edward Acheampong
Computational Quantum Chemistry Studies Of The Interactions Of Amino Acids Side Chains With The Guanine Radical Cation., Edward Acheampong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Guanine is generally accepted as the most easily oxidized DNA base when cells are subjected to ionizing radiation, photoionization or photosensitization. At pH 7, the midpoint reduction potential is on the order of 0.2 – 0.3 V higher than those of the radicals of e.g. tyrosine, tryptophan cysteine and histidine, so that the radical “repair” (or at least, a thermodynamically favorable reaction) involving these amino acids is feasible. Computational quantum studies have been done on tyrosine, tryptophan, cysteine and histidine side chains as they appear in histones. Density functional theory was employed using B3LYP/6-31G+ (d, p) basis set to study …
Imidacloprid Persistence, Mobility, And Effect On Ecosystem Function, Joanna Hardin
Imidacloprid Persistence, Mobility, And Effect On Ecosystem Function, Joanna Hardin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid pesticide used to protect against biting and sucking insects. Land managers rely on its systemic properties, however long-term studies investigating imidacloprid effects on ecosystem function are limited. This study investigated imidacloprid applications to Tsuga caroliniana and Tsuga canadensis over time and compared concentrations to measures of ecosystem function including soil respiration, microbial function, and invertebrate density. Results indicate that imidacloprid is persistent (p0.5). Microbial function and invertebrate density were not significantly different between control and treatment locations nor did imidacloprid concentrations correlate with ecosystem functional indicator activity (p>0.05). It is evident that imidacloprid does not …
Multi-Label Classification Using Higher-Order Label Clusters, Dilanga Lakshitha Bandara Abeyrathna Galapita Mudiyanselage
Multi-Label Classification Using Higher-Order Label Clusters, Dilanga Lakshitha Bandara Abeyrathna Galapita Mudiyanselage
Student Work
Multi-label classification (MLC) is one of the major classification approaches in the context of data mining where each instance in the dataset is annotated with a set of labels. The nature of multiple labels associated with one instance often demands higher computational power compared to conventional single-label classification tasks. A multi-label classification is often simplified by decomposing the task into single-label classification which ignores correlations among labels. Incorporating label correlations into classification task can be hard since correlations may be missing, or may exist among a pair or a large subset of labels. In this study, a novel MLC approach …
A Normal Form For Words In The Temperley-Lieb Algebra And The Artin Braid Group On Three Strands, Jack Hartsell
A Normal Form For Words In The Temperley-Lieb Algebra And The Artin Braid Group On Three Strands, Jack Hartsell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The motivation for this thesis is the computer-assisted calculation of the Jones poly- nomial from braid words in the Artin braid group on three strands, denoted B3. The method used for calculation of the Jones polynomial is the original method that was created when the Jones polynomial was first discovered by Vaughan Jones in 1984. This method utilizes the Temperley-Lieb algebra, and in our case the Temperley-Lieb Algebra on three strands, denoted A3, thus generalizations about A3 that assist with the process of calculation are pursued.

Kinetics Of Higher Lying Potassium States After Excitation Of The D2 Transition In The Presence Of Helium, Austin J. Wallerstein
Theses and Dissertations
A kinetic model for the performance of a potassium Diode Pumped Alkali Laser (DPAL), including the role of higher lying states is developed to assess the impact on device efficiency and performance. A rate package for a nine level kinetic model including recommended rate parameters is solved under steady-state conditions. Energy pooling and far wing absorption populates higher lying states, with single photon and Penning ionization leading to modest potassium (K) dimer ion concentrations. The fraction of the population removed from the basic three levels associated with the standard model is less than 10% for all reasonable laser conditions, including …

Simulation Of Climate Across The Permian-Triassic Boundary With A Focus On Phytogeographical Data Analysis, Mitali Dinesh Gautam
Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses
The present study aims at reconstructing the paleoclimate across the Permian-Triassic Boundary (PTB, 251.9 ± 0.024 Ma) which encompasses one of the major mass extinction events of the Earth’s history. Results are analyzed from sensitivity experiments that have been previously been carried out with a community climate system model (CCSM3) for 4x CO2 higher than the pre-industrial levels of 280 ppmv, 12.7x CO2 and 12.7x CO2 with a lower cloud cover . This study attempts to reconstruct the climate using the floristic patterns derived from plant-fossil data. Finally, simulated biomes are compared with data-derived biomes, in order to validate the …

3d Scintillator Detector Quenching Characterization For Scanning Proton Beams, Fahed Alsanea
Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)
Proton pencil beam scanning is becoming the standard treatment delivery technique for proton therapy centers. Scanned proton pencil beams provide a highly conformal dose distribution. The complex dose distribution poses challenges for quality assurance measurements leading to sophisticated detector setups and time consuming measurements. Fast 3D measurements are therefore desirable to verify the complex dose distribution and to enable the utilization of the full potential of proton therapy. The overall objective of this project is to improve volumetric scintillators detectors to provide 3D measurements for applications for beam commissioning, quality assurance program, and patient-specific treatment delivery verification.

Designing Thermally Stable Ionic Liquid Stationary Phases For Gas Chromatography And Examining Their Structure-Property Relationships, Rahul A. Patil
Designing Thermally Stable Ionic Liquid Stationary Phases For Gas Chromatography And Examining Their Structure-Property Relationships, Rahul A. Patil
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations
Ionic liquids are popular in diverse scientific applications because of their unique physicochemical properties. The physicochemical properties of ionic liquids can be “tuned” by the modification of their structural moieties. Understanding of structure-property relationship is important if one wants to introduce a desired property in ionic liquid for a specific application. The initial part of this thesis will discuss the understanding of structure-property relationship of dicationic ionic liquids. Ionic liquids with high thermal stability are useful in many applications from simple solvents for high temperature reactions to high vacuum lubricants for space applications. This thesis presents the design, synthesis, and …

Oxidation Of Carbon Monoxide Over Ceria And Alumina Supported Palladium Catalysts, John Davis Gary
Oxidation Of Carbon Monoxide Over Ceria And Alumina Supported Palladium Catalysts, John Davis Gary
Theses and Dissertations
Palladium catalysts on both Al2O3 and CeO2, supports were studied for efficacy in low temperature carbon monoxide oxidation. Calcination temperatures were varied between 500-900°C for alumina supported catalysts and shown to have no significant difference in activity. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy studies revealed structural changes associated with palladium states and reacted catalysts and displayed a change from palladium oxide (PdO) to native palladium oxide (PdOx) and elemental palladium (Pd). Activity studies were conducted on all catalysts synthesized and indicated that Pd/Al2O3 achieved 100% CO conversion at 150°C when calcined at 500°C and pretreated with reduction process. Pd/CeO2 showed higher activity and …

Multiple Coulomb Scattering In The Lariat Detector, Dalton Sessumes
Physics Theses
LArIAT is a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) deployed in a dedicated charged particle test beam line at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. LArIAT aims to measure an interaction process known as multiple coulomb scattering, which describes the process of a charged particle passing through a slab of material. As it passes, it will experience millions of scatters due to the Coulombic interactions with the nuclei of the material. This work presents a characterization of charged particle multiple coulomb scattering as a function of incoming momentum and particle type as it passes through the LArIAT detector. Employing data collected …
Nonlinear Sliding Mode Observer Applied To Microalgae Growth, Rebecca J. Griffith
Nonlinear Sliding Mode Observer Applied To Microalgae Growth, Rebecca J. Griffith
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Modeling biological processes, such as algae growth, is an area of ongoing research. The ability to understand the multitude of parameters that influence this system provides a platform for better understanding the dynamics of microalgae growth. Empirical modeling efforts look to understand sources of driving nutrients that influence harmful algal blooms (HABs). These harmful algal blooms are dense aggregates that have an increasingly negative impact on local economics, marine and freshwater systems, and public health. They result from a high influx of nitrogen and nutrients that drive the algae biomass to exponentially grow. This growth blocks out the sun, potentially …

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
CuxPd1-xO forms a homogeneous solid solution over the wide range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.725 in which compositional variation can be correlated with structural and chemical environmental changes. After a small lag at low Cu2+ concentrations, where the lattice cell parameters are pinned to that of the pure PdO structure, CuxPd1-xO lattice parameters follow Vegard’s law in which the cell volume decreases linearly with x, indicating a homogenous solution in which Cu2+ randomly replaces the larger Pd2+ cation. The crystal structure also undergoes an increase in the c/a …

The Living Wall Display displays interactive content on a mobile wall screen that moves in concert with content animation. To augment the interaction experience, the display dynamically changes its position and orientation, responding to the content animation triggered by user interactions. We implement three proof of concept prototypes that represent pseudo force impact of the interactive content using physical screen movement. Pilot studies show that the Living Wall augments content expressiveness, and increases the sense of presence of the screen content.

Vr Safari Park: A Concept-Based World Building Interface Using Blocks And World Tree, Shotaro Ichikawa, Anthony Tang, Kazuki Takashima, Yoshifumi Kitamura
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a concept-based world building approach, realized in a system called VR Safari Park, which allows users to rapidly create and manipulate a world simulation. Conventional world building tools focus on the manipulation and arrangement of entities to set up the simulation, which is time consuming as it requires frequent view and entity manipulations. Our approach focuses on a far simpler mechanic, where users add virtual blocks which represent world entities (e.g. animals, terrain, weather, etc.) to a World Tree, which represents the simulation. In so doing, the World Tree provides a quick overview of the simulation, and users …

Automatically `Verifying’ Discrete-Time Complex Systems Through Learning, Abstraction And Refinement, Jingyi Wang, Jun Sun, Shengchao Qin, Cyrille Jegourel
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Precisely modeling complex systems like cyber-physical systems is challenging, which often render model-based system verification techniques like model checking infeasible. To overcome this challenge, we propose a method called LAR to automatically ‘verify’ such complex systems through a combination of learning, abstraction and refinement from a set of system log traces. We assume that log traces and sampling frequency are adequate to capture ‘enough’ behaviour of the system. Given a safety property and the concrete system log traces as input, LAR automatically learns and refines system models, and produces two kinds of outputs. One is a counterexample with a bounded …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper analyzes a human-centric framework, called SmartABLE, for easy retrieval of the sensor values from pervasively deployed smart objects in a campus-like environment. In this framework, smartphones carried by campus occupants act as data mules, opportunistically retrieving data from nearby BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) equipped smart object sensors and relaying them to a backend repository. We focus specifically on dynamically varying the transmission power of the deployed BLE beacons, so as to extend their operational lifetime without sacrificing the frequency of sensor data retrieval. We propose a memetic algorithm-based power adaptation strategy that can handle deployments of thousands of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Remote user authentication has found numerous real-world applications, especially in a user-server model. In this work, we introduce the notion of anonymous remote user authentication with k-times untraceability (k-RUA) for a given parameter k, where authorized users authenticate themselves to an authority (typically a server) in an anonymous and k-times untraceable manner. We define the formal security models for a generic k-RUA construction that guarantees user authenticity, anonymity and user privacy. We provide a concrete instantiation of k-RUA having the following properties: (1) a third party cannot impersonate an authorized user by producing valid transcripts for the user while conversing …

Ubiquitous use of social media such as microblogging platforms opens unprecedented chances for false information to diffuse online. Facing the challenges in such a so-called “post-fact” era, it is very important for intelligent systems to not only check the veracity of information but also verify the authenticity of the users who spread the information, especially in time-critical situations such as real-world emergencies, where urgent measures have to be taken for stopping the spread of fake information. In this work, we propose a novel machine-learning-based approach for automatic identification of the users who spread rumorous information on Twitter by leveraging computational …

The interpolation, prediction, and feature analysis of fine-gained air quality are three important topics in the area of urban air computing. The solutions to these topics can provide extremely useful information to support air pollution control, and consequently generate great societal and technical impacts. Most of the existing work solves the three problems separately by different models. In this paper, we propose a general and effective approach to solve the three problems in one model called the Deep Air Learning (DAL). The main idea of DAL lies in embedding feature selection and semi-supervised learning in different layers of the deep …

Early Prediction Of Merged Code Changes To Prioritize Reviewing Tasks, Yuanrui Fan, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Modern Code Review (MCR) has been widely used by open source and proprietary software projects. Inspecting code changes consumes reviewers much time and effort since they need to comprehend patches, and many reviewers are often assigned to review many code changes. Note that a code change might be eventually abandoned, which causes waste of time and effort. Thus, a tool that predicts early on whether a code change will be merged can help developers prioritize changes to inspect, accomplish more things given tight schedule, and not waste reviewing effort on low quality changes. In this paper, motivated by the above …

In academic institutions, it is normal practice that at the end of each term, students are required to complete a questionnaire that is designed to gather students’ perceptions of the instructor and their learning experience in the course. Students’ feedback includes numerical answers to Likert scale questions and textual comments to open-ended questions. Within the textual comments given by the students are embedded suggestions. A suggestion can be explicit or implicit. Any suggestion provides useful pointers on how the instructor can further enhance the student learning experience. However, it is tedious to manually go through all the qualitative comments and …
