Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Parallel spectroscopic and computational studies of iron(III) cysteine dioxygenase (CDO) and synthetic models are presented. The synthetic complexes utilize the ligand tris(4,5-diphenyl-1-methylimidazol-2-yl)phosphine (Ph2TIP), which mimics the facial three-histidine triad of CDO and other thiol dioxygenases. In addition to the previously reported [FeII(CysOEt)(Ph2TIP)]BPh4 (1; CysOEt is the ethyl ester of anionic l-cysteine), the formation and crystallographic characterization of [FeII(2-MTS)(Ph2TIP)]BPh4 (2) is reported, where the methyl 2-thiosalicylate anion (2-MTS) resembles the substrate of 3-mercaptopropionate dioxygenase (MDO). One-electron chemical oxidation of 1 and 2 yields ferric species …

Thermodynamic Model Of Co2 Deposition In Cold Climates, Sandra K. S. Boetcher, Ted Von Hippel, Matthew J. Traum Dec 2019

Thermodynamic Model Of Co2 Deposition In Cold Climates, Sandra K. S. Boetcher, Ted Von Hippel, Matthew J. Traum

Publications

A thermodynamic model, borrowing ideas from psychrometric principles, of a cryogenic direct-air CO2-capture system utilizing a precooler is used to estimate the optimal CO2 removal fraction to minimize energy input per tonne of CO2. Energy costs to operate the system scale almost linearly with the temperature drop between the ingested air and the cryogenic desublimation temperature of CO2, driving siting to the coldest accessible locations. System performance in three Arctic/Antarctic regions where the proposed system can potentially be located is analyzed. Colder ambient temperatures provide colder system input air temperature yielding lower CO2 removal energy requirements. A case is also …

Iron is an essential micronutrient that limits primary production in up to 40% of the surface ocean and influences carbon dioxide uptake and climate change. Dissolved iron is mostly associated with loosely characterised organic molecules, called ligands, which define key aspects of the iron cycle such as its residence time, distribution and bioavailability to plankton. Models based on in situ ligand distributions and the behaviour of purified compounds include long-lived ligands in the deep ocean, bioreactive ligands in the surface ocean and photochemical processes as important components of the iron cycle. Herein, we further characterise biologically refractory ligands in dissolved …

The Effects Of Climate On Suicide Rates In 36 Oregon Counties, Elshadai Hailu, Maria Hernandez

Student Scholarship - College of Business

This study looked at average temperature, amount of rainfall and amount of sunshine in all 36 Oregon counties and how they affect suicide rates. Climate information was gathered over the past 30 years and suicide rates were measured between the years 2013 and 2016. It was hypothesized that there would be a negative relationship between low temperature and suicide rates. It was also predicted that there would be a negative relationship between high temperatures and suicide rates. This study found that there was a negative relationship between average high temperature and sucide rates. It also found there is to be …

Examining The Effects Of Greenland Ice Sheet Melting And Atlantic Meridional Shutdown On The Climate Of Scandinavia And The British Isles, Tyler Lemburg Dec 2019

Examining The Effects Of Greenland Ice Sheet Melting And Atlantic Meridional Shutdown On The Climate Of Scandinavia And The British Isles, Tyler Lemburg

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Earth’s climate has been rapidly changing over the last hundred years, and its global average temperature is rising. However, climate change is far more complicated than a simple increase in temperature. For example, it is theorized that certain regions of Earth, including Scandinavia and the British Isles, could actually become cooler through ongoing climate change processes. Two of these processes are Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) melting, and slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). This research examines if climate change, through GrIS melting and AMOC slowdown, could contribute to cooler, instead of warmer, temperatures in Scandinavia and the British …

Image Encryption And Stegenography Based On Computational Single Pixel Imaging, Hossein Ghanbari Ghalehjoughi Dec 2019

Image Encryption And Stegenography Based On Computational Single Pixel Imaging, Hossein Ghanbari Ghalehjoughi

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple layers of information security are introduced based on computational ghost imaging (CGI). We show, in the first step, that it is possible to design a very reliable image encryption scheme using 3D computational ghost imaging with two single-pixel detectors sending data through two channels. Through the Normalized Root Mean Square scale, it is then shown that a further level of security can be achieved by merging data-carrying channels into one and using a coded order for their placement in the sequence of bucket data carried by the single channel. Yet another layer of security is introduced through hiding the …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental health condition that affects a growing number of people. A variety of PTSD treatment methods exist, however current research indicates that virtual reality exposure-based treatment has become more prominent in its use.Yet the treatment method can be costly and time consuming for clinicians and ultimately for the healthcare system. PTSD can be delivered in a more sustainable way using virtual reality. This is accomplished by using machine learning to autonomously adapt virtual reality scene changes. The use of machine learning will also support a more efficient way of inserting positive stimuli in virtual reality …

Sustainablewell-Being Challenge: A Student-Centered Pedagogical Tool Linking Human Well-Being To Ecological Flourishing, Christine Vatovec, Haley Ferrer

Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Human behavioral change is necessary if we wish to evolve into a more sustainable human society, but change is hard, especially given that many people equate environmentalism with personal sacrifice. This paper highlights a semester-long assignment in which undergraduate students examined five behaviors that claim to increase happiness with minimal ecological footprints. We used mixed methods to analyze students' self-reported positive and negative affect scores before and after completing each of the five activities, along with descriptions of the carbon footprint of each activity and student self-reflections on whether each challenge promoted "sustainability". Results indicated that students' positive affect increased …

Exploration Of Nucleic Acid Hydrogran Bonding Using Molecular Mechanics And Dft Calculations, Simi Kaur Dec 2019

Exploration Of Nucleic Acid Hydrogran Bonding Using Molecular Mechanics And Dft Calculations, Simi Kaur

Biological Sciences

Many recent theoretical and experimental techniques have been developed to probe the structurefunction relationships of complex biomolecules. The roles of RNAs are dependent upon various intricate structural motifs and interactions, including hairpins, pseudoknots, long range territory contacts, bulges and internal loops, that are not easily captured by these methods. We had previously developed an enhanced replica exchange molecular dynamics method that incorporated secondary structure information in the form of distance restraints in order to effectively overcome kinetic barriers and sample conformational space. In several structures, restrained RNA base pairs near large bulges displayed a preference for stacking over hydrogen bonding …

Modeling Waterfowl Hunter And Ducks Unlimited Member Behavior Using Mark-Recapture Methods, Katherine Graham Dec 2019

Modeling Waterfowl Hunter And Ducks Unlimited Member Behavior Using Mark-Recapture Methods, Katherine Graham

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The number of individuals actively participating in waterfowl hunting has substantially declined since the 1980s, despite relatively abundant waterfowl populations and hunting opportunities. To avoid further losses in political support for wildlife management, losses in habitat conservation revenue, and broaden the base of waterfowl and wetland conservation support, there has been an increased focus on growing the number of waterfowl hunters and waterfowl and wetland conservation supporters. The purpose of this study was to estimate resident waterfowl hunter and Ducks Unlimited (DU) member recruitment rates, retention probabilities, and license/membership purchase probabilities; provide a better understanding of the factors influencing these …

The Negotiator's Role In A Buyer-Seller Game, Joseph Gaudy Dec 2019

The Negotiator's Role In A Buyer-Seller Game, Joseph Gaudy

Graduate Theses and Capstone Projects (excluding DNP)

In game theory, buyer-seller games rarely utilize a negotiating third party. Any negotiations are typically conducted by the buyer and seller. This study, motivated by the real estate market, uses sequentially and simultaneously played game models to explore the influence a self-interested, negotiating, third party has on player payoffs. For the sequential model, a game tree is utilized to demonstrate player actions, preferences, and outcomes. The weak sequential equilibrium is calculated using Gambit[1] and shows optimality in player payoffs to exist when the seller’s and realtor’s strategies align according to the current market. For the simultaneous model, expected payoff functions …

A Machine Learning Assessment To Predict The Sediment Transport Rate Under Oscillating Sheet Flow Conditions, Huy Vu Dec 2019

A Machine Learning Assessment To Predict The Sediment Transport Rate Under Oscillating Sheet Flow Conditions, Huy Vu

Senior Honors Theses

The two-phase flow approach has been the conventional method designed to study the sediment transport rate. Due to the complexity of sediment transport, the precisely numerical models computed from that approach require initial assumptions and, as a result, may not yield accurate output for all conditions. This research work proposes that Machine Learning algorithms can be an alternative way to predict the processes of sediment transport in two-dimensional directions under oscillating sheet flow conditions, by utilizing the available dataset of the SedFoam multidimensional two-phase model. The assessment utilized linear regression and gradient boosting algorithm to analyze the lowest average mean …

Modeling Elementary Students’ Ideas About Heredity: A Comparison Of Curricular Interventions, Cory Forbes, Dante Cisterna, Devarati Bhattacharya, Ranu Roy Dec 2019

Modeling Elementary Students’ Ideas About Heredity: A Comparison Of Curricular Interventions, Cory Forbes, Dante Cisterna, Devarati Bhattacharya, Ranu Roy

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Learning about heredity is important across the K–12 continuum. However, these ideas may be challenging for students. We examined third-grade students’ ideas about heredity in the context of a new, six-week, model-based science unit that uses corn as a model organism to support students’ ideas about heredity. We analyzed data collected during implementation of the unit, including student artifacts and interviews. We compared these data to those from a pilot version of the curriculum – implemented in the prior year – that was focused on the same disciplinary concepts but was not designed around scientific modeling. Our findings illustrate levels …

A Simulation Study On The Size And Power Properties Of Some Ridge Regression Tests, B. M. Golam Kibria, Shipra Banik

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Ridge regression techniques have been extensively used to solve the multicollinearity problem for both linear and non-linear regression models since its inception. This paper studied different ridge regression t-type tests of the individual coefficients of a linear regression model. A simulation study has been conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed tests with respect to their sizes and powers under different settings of the linear regression model. Our simulation results demonstrated that most of the proposed tests have sizes close to the 5% nominal level and all tests except tAKS, tkM2 and tkM9 have considerable gain in powers over …

Alpha-Skew Generalized Normal Distribution And Its Applications, Eisa Mahmoudi, Hamideh Jafari, Rahmat S. Meshkat

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The main object of this paper is to introduce a new family of distributions, which is quite flexible to fit both unimodal and bimodal shapes. This new family is entitled alpha-skew generalized normal (ASGN), that skews the symmetric distributions, especially generalized normal distribution through this paper. Here, some properties of this new distribution including cumulative distribution function, survival function, hazard rate function and moments are derived. To estimate the model parameters, the maximum likelihood estimators and the asymptotic distribution of the estimators are discussed. The observed information matrix is derived. Finally, the flexibility of the new distribution, as well as …

Jones Polynomial For Graphs Of Twist Knots, Abdulgani Şahin, Bünyamin Şahin Dec 2019

Jones Polynomial For Graphs Of Twist Knots, Abdulgani Şahin, Bünyamin Şahin

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We frequently encounter knots in the flow of our daily life. Either we knot a tie or we tie a knot on our shoes. We can even see a fisherman knotting the rope of his boat. Of course, the knot as a mathematical model is not that simple. These are the reflections of knots embedded in threedimensional space in our daily lives. In fact, the studies on knots are meant to create a complete classification of them. This has been achieved for a large number of knots today. But we cannot say that it has been terminated yet. There are …

Quantifying The Variability In Heavy Metal Concentrations In Produce Grown In Metals-Rich Soil, Harris Lowell Byers

Theses and Dissertations

Childhood Pb exposure is associated with a multitude of poor health outcomes. In food-insecure areas, growing fresh produce in residential backyard gardens is one option for parents; however, commonly grown crops are known to accumulate Pb in consumable tissues when grown in metals-rich soils. A variety of produce representing a continuum of consumable tissues were grown in soils collected from two residential vegetable gardens, a former metal foundry, and commercial topsoil purchased from a local hardware store. The concentrations of heavy metals in crop tissues were measured with custom wavelength dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WD-XRF) spectroscopy and portable energy dispersive X-ray …

The Dynamics And Speciation Of Arsenic In Drinking Water Wells In Eastern Wisconsin, Evvan Plank Dec 2019

The Dynamics And Speciation Of Arsenic In Drinking Water Wells In Eastern Wisconsin, Evvan Plank

Theses and Dissertations

Arsenic typically develops in Eastern Wisconsin groundwater as a result of oxidation of sulfide bearing minerals in the limestone bedrock (Schreiber et al. 2000). Naturally occurring arsenic exists in groundwater as oxyanions which have two oxidation states, As(III) and As(V). Under ambient pH conditions As(V) is primarily present as an anion (i.e., H2AsO4-) while As(III) tends to be uncharged (i.e., H3AsO3), making it much more difficult to remove through the existing treatment techniques such as adsorption and reverse osmosis (RO). Although many studies exist establishing arsenic concentrations across Wisconsin, there is a lack of investigations into the concentrations of each …

Seasonal Offshore/Inshore Migration Of Round Gobies, Erik Carlson Dec 2019

Seasonal Offshore/Inshore Migration Of Round Gobies, Erik Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

Since the invasion of round gobies (Neogobius melanostomus) in Lake Michigan, they have become integrated into both the nearshore and offshore food webs. Round gobies can be found in shallower water (<20 m) during the summer, but they disappear from these depths in early fall. They have been collected, occasionally, offshore in depths greater than 70 m during fall and early spring. These observations and other anecdotal evidence indicate that round goby migrate offshore during the fall and return in the spring. To study this, a large remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was used to conduct video transects offshore at various depths. The offshore sampling showed that round gobies migrated away from nearshore habitat in early October and were almost exclusively found deeper than 20 m by November. The round gobies remained offshore (>30 m) until mid-May, when they began the return to nearshore habitat. The cues to start the offshore and return migrations were not the focus of this project, but the fall offshore migrations coincided with decreasing temperatures nearshore in the fall, and in spring, the offshore movement of the thermal bar. The offshore migration in fall provide an increase in forage opportunity for deep, cold-water predators such as …
