Unspecified Verticality Of Franck-Condon Transitions, Absorption And Emission Spectra Of Cyanine Dyes, And A Classically Inspired Approximation, Joseph D. Alia, Joseph A. Flack

Chemistry Publications

The computed vertical energy, Ev,a/f, from the equilibrium geometry of the initial electronic state is frequently considered as representative of the experimental excitation/emission energy, Eabs/fl = hc/λmax. Application of the quantum mechanical version of the Franck–Condon principle does not involve precise specification of nuclear positions before, after, or during an electronic transition. Moreover, the duration of an electronic transition is not experimentally accessible in spectra with resolved vibrational structure. It is shown that computed vibronic spectra based on TDDFT methods and application of quantum mechanical FC analysis predict Eabs = hc/λmax …

The Fold Illusion: The Origins And Implications Of Ogives On Silicic Lavas, Graham Dm Andrews, Stuart Kenderes, Alan Whittington, Shelby L. Isom, Sarah Brown, Holly Danielle Pettus, Brenna Cole, Kailee Gokey

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Folds on the surfaces of mafic lavas are among the most readily recognized geological structures and are used as first-order criteria for identifying ancient lavas on Earth and other planetary bodies. However, the presence of surface-folds on the surface of silicic lavas is contested in this study and we challenge the widely accepted interpretation that silicic lava surfaces contain folds using examples from the western United States and Sardinia, Italy. We interpret the ridges and troughs on their upper surfaces, typically referred to as ‘ogives’ or ‘pressure ridges’, as fracture-bound structures rather than folds. We report on the absence of …

In the current era of rapid climate change, accurate characterization of climate-relevant gas dynamics-namely production, consumption, and net emissions-is required for all biomes, especially those ecosystems most susceptible to the impact of change. Marine environments include regions that act as net sources or sinks for numerous climateactive trace gases including methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). The temporal and spatial distributions of CH4 and N2O are controlled by the interaction of complex biogeochemical and physical processes. To evaluate and quantify how these mechanisms affect marine CH4 and N2O cycling requires a combination of traditional scientific disciplines including oceanography, microbiology, and …

Creating Optimal Conditions For Reproducible Data Analysis In R With ‘Fertile’, Audrey M. Bertin, Benjamin Baumer Nov 2020

Creating Optimal Conditions For Reproducible Data Analysis In R With ‘Fertile’, Audrey M. Bertin, Benjamin Baumer

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

The advancement of scientific knowledge increasingly depends on ensuring that data-driven research is reproducible: that two people with the same data obtain the same results. However, while the necessity of reproducibility is clear, there are significant behavioral and technical challenges that impede its widespread implementation and no clear consensus on standards of what constitutes reproducibility in published research. We present fertile, an R package that focuses on a series of common mistakes programmers make while conducting data science projects in R, primarily through the RStudio integrated development environment. fertile operates in two modes: proactively, to prevent reproducibility mistakes from happening …

Nearly 30,000 Late-Type Main-Sequence Stars With Stellar Age From Lamost Dr5, Jiajun Zhang, Terry D. Oswalt, Jingkun Zhao, Xilong Liang, Xianhao Ye, Gang Zhao

Publications

We construct a sample of nearly 30,000 main-sequence stars with 4500K < Teff < 5000K and stellar ages estimated by the chromospheric activity−age relation. This sample is used to determine the age distribution in the R − Z plane of the Galaxy, where R is the projected Galactocentric distance in the disk midplane and Z is the height above the disk midplane. As |Z| increases, the percentage of old stars becomes larger. It is known that scale-height of Galactic disk increases as R increases, which is called flare. A mild flare from R ∼ 8.0 to 9.0 kpc in stellar age distribution is found. We also find that the velocity dispersion increases with age as confirmed by previous studies. Finally we present spiral-shaped structures in Z − υZ phase space in three stellar age bins. The spiral is clearly seen in the age bin of [0, 1] Gyr, which suggests that a vertical perturbation to the disk probably took place within the last ∼ 1.0 Gyr.

Year 7 Students’ Interpretation Of Letters And Symbols In Solving Routine Algebraic Problems, Madihah Khalid Dr., Faeizah Yakop Dr., Hasniza Ibrahim

The Qualitative Report

In this study wefocused on one of the recurring issues in the learning of mathematics, which is students’ errors and misconceptions in learning algebra. We investigated Year 7 students on how they manipulate and interpret letters in solving routine algebraic problems to understand their thinking process. This is a case study of qualitative nature, focusing on one pencil and paper test, observation, and in-depth interviews of students in one particular school in Brunei Darussalam. The themes that emerged from interviews based on the test showed students’ interpretation of letters categorized as “combining” - which involved the combining of numbers during …

Global Phylogeography Suggests Extensive Eucosmopolitanism In Mesopelagic Fishes (Maurolicus: Sternoptychidae), D. J. Reese, Jan Y. Poulsen, Tracey Sutton, Paulo A. S. Cost, Mauricio F. Landaeta

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Fishes in the mesopelagic zone (200–1000 m) have recently been highlighted for potential exploitation. Here we assess global phylogeography in Maurolicus, the Pearlsides, an ecologically important group. We obtained new sequences from mitochondrial COI and nuclear ITS-2 from multiple locations worldwide, representing 10 described species plus an unknown central South Pacific taxon. Phylogenetic analyses identified five geographically distinct groupings, three of which comprise multiple described species. Species delimitation analyses suggest these may represent four species. Maurolicus muelleri and M. australis are potentially a single species, although as no shared haplotypes are found between the two disjunct groups, we suggest …

Modeling Biotic & Abiotic Drivers Affecting Biogeomorphic Coastal Foredunes, Bianca Charbonneau Nov 2020

Modeling Biotic & Abiotic Drivers Affecting Biogeomorphic Coastal Foredunes, Bianca Charbonneau

Sustainability Seminar Series

Coastal dunes are exceptionally dynamic terrestrial habitats that will only grow increasingly vulnerable with climate change. A structured approach to protect and restore these and other coastal biogeomorphic interface habitats is needed to maintain their invaluable ecosystem services. Vegetation in these habitats acts as ecosystem engineers such that, to achieve this, one must understand and accurately forecast vegetation dynamics at the nexus of shifting abiotic conditions and drivers of change. We developed a process-based model for coastal dune vegetation ecology, specifically, growth, density, and colonization as it affects and is affected by shifting habitat topography and storm event impact. The …

Self-Immolative Polymers As A Degradable And Triggerable Class Of Surfactants, Siamak Keshtpour Nov 2020

Self-Immolative Polymers As A Degradable And Triggerable Class Of Surfactants, Siamak Keshtpour

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Self-immolative polymers (SIPs) are degradable polymers that undergo end-to-end depolymerization upon triggering. They have potential for the development of degradable surfactants addressing human and environmental toxicity concerns associated with non-degradable surfactants, but they have not yet been investigated as surfactants. Herein, polyglyoxylamide SIPs with different pendent groups and end-caps were synthesized, envisioning they could serve as depolymerizable analogues of poly(vinyl alcohol) and its derivatives. Polyglyoxylamides with pendent hydroxyls stabilized both PEA and PLA particle suspensions. They showed the potential to undergo triggered degradation, resulting in destabilization of the suspensions. However, untriggered suspensions exhibited poor long-term stability, so further structural tuning …

Linking Mosquito Surveillance To Dengue Fever Through Bayesian Mechanistic Modeling, Clinton B. Leach, Jennifer A. Hoeting, Kim M. Pepin, Alvaro E. Eiras, Mevin B. Hooten, Colleen T. Webb

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Our ability to effectively prevent the transmission of the dengue virus through targeted control of its vector, Aedes aegypti, depends critically on our understanding of the link between mosquito abundance and human disease risk. Mosquito and clinical surveillance data are widely collected, but linking them requires a modeling framework that accounts for the complex non-linear mechanisms involved in transmission. Most critical are the bottleneck in transmission imposed by mosquito lifespan relative to the virus’ extrinsic incubation period, and the dynamics of human immunity. We developed a differential equation model of dengue transmission and embedded it in a Bayesian hierarchical …

Response Of The Mode Grüneisen Parameters With Anisotropic Compression: A Pressure And Temperature Dependent Raman Study Of Β-Sn, Jasmine K. Hinton, Christian Childs, Dean Smith, Paul B. Ellison, Keith V. Lawler, Ashkan Salamat Nov 2020

Response Of The Mode Grüneisen Parameters With Anisotropic Compression: A Pressure And Temperature Dependent Raman Study Of Β-Sn, Jasmine K. Hinton, Christian Childs, Dean Smith, Paul B. Ellison, Keith V. Lawler, Ashkan Salamat

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research

The lattice dynamic response of body-centered tetragonal β−Sn (I41/amd) under high pressure and -temperature conditions is determined using experimental optical vibration modes. Raman scattering is used to map the phase stability region of β−Sn to perform mode Grüneisen analysis, and we demonstrate the necessity of an optical intensity calibration for Raman thermometry. The Grüneisen tensor is evaluated along a set of isotherms to address shortcomings of single-mode Grüneisen parameters with respect to anisotropic deformations of this tetragonal structured soft metal. The changes observed here in the Grüneisen tensor as a function of temperature are related to anharmonicity and denote potential …

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper reports on the Quick Images app, whose design framework is informed by research on ten-structured thinking and gamification principles. Inclusivity was also a major consideration, especially in the context of a developing country. Thus, the app was made freely available and required only moderate system requirements. Pilot studies revealed that the app has the potential to promote children’s ability to see two-digit numbers in relation to tens and ones, which is a major goal of elementary school mathematics. Collaborations with the Philippine Department of Education to ensure the app’s sustained use are also discussed.

A Modeling Study On The Influence Of Sea-Level Rise And Channel Deepening On Estuarine Circulation And Dissolved Oxygen Levels In The Tidal James River, Virginia, Usa, Ya Wang, Jian Shen

VIMS Articles

The impact of channel deepening and sea-level rise on the environmental integrity of an estuary is investigated using a three-dimensional hydrodynamic-eutrophication model. The model results show that dissolved oxygen (DO) only experienced minor changes, even when the deep channel was deepened by 3 m in the mesohaline and polyhaline regions of the James River. We found that vertical stratification decreased DO aeration while the estuarine gravitational circulation increased bottom DO exchange. The interactions between these two processes play an important role in modulating DO. The minor change in DO due to channel deepening indicates that the James River is unique …

An Analysis Of Growth Of The Community Integration Psychological Score In An Ethnically Diverse Population Experiencing Homelessness In A Permanent Supportive Housing Program Using Hierarchical Mixed Modeling, Leah Hollis Puglisi Nov 2020

An Analysis Of Growth Of The Community Integration Psychological Score In An Ethnically Diverse Population Experiencing Homelessness In A Permanent Supportive Housing Program Using Hierarchical Mixed Modeling, Leah Hollis Puglisi

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Hierarchical models are becoming increasingly common in epidemiological and psychological research. When analyzing data from such studies, the nested structure of the data must be taken into account. Mixed modeling in conjunction with hierarchical mixed modeling allows researchers to ask broad questions about the population of interest. Modeling under restricted maximum likelihood estimation (REML), as opposed to full maximum likelihood estimation (ML), increases the accuracy of estimates for the random effects in the model. We use hierarchical mixed modeling under REML estimation to analyze which factors increase “community integration”, a concept and a construct developed and used in the mental …

Cationic Boron Formazanate Dyes, Benjamin D. Katzman, Paul D. Boyle, Viktor N. Staroverov, Joe Gilroy, Ryan R. Maar

Chemistry Publications

Incorporation of cationic boron atoms into molecular frameworks is an established strategy for creating chemical species with unusual bonding and reactivity but is rarely thought of as a way of enhancing molecular optoelectronic properties. Using boron formazanate dyes as examples, we demonstrate that the wavelengths, intensities, and type of the first electronic transitions in BN heterocycles can be modulated by varying the charge, coordination number, and supporting ligands at the cationic boron atom. UV‐vis absorption spectroscopy measurements and density‐functional (DFT) calculations show that these modulations are caused by changes in the geometry and extent of π‐conjugation of the boron formazanate …

Grim Under A Compensation Variant, Aaron Davis, Aaron Davis Nov 2020

Grim Under A Compensation Variant, Aaron Davis, Aaron Davis

Honors College Theses

Games on graphs are a well studied subset of combinatorial games. Balance and strategies for winning are often looked at in these games. One such combinatorial graph game is Grim. Many of the winning strategies of Grim are already known. We note that many of these winning strategies are only available to the first player. Hoping to develop a fairer Grim, we look at Grim played under a slighlty different rule set. We develop winning strategies and known outcomes for this altered Grim. Throughout, we discuss whether our altered Grim is a fairer game then the original.
