Tidal Locking And The Gravitational Fold Catastrophe, Andrea Ferroglia, Miguel C. N. Fiolhais Nov 2020

Tidal Locking And The Gravitational Fold Catastrophe, Andrea Ferroglia, Miguel C. N. Fiolhais

Publications and Research

The purpose of this work is to study the phenomenon of tidal locking in a pedagogical framework by analyzing the effective gravitational potential of a two-body system with two spinning objects. It is shown that the effective potential of such a system is an example of a fold catastrophe. In fact, the existence of a local minimum and saddle point, corresponding to tidally locked circular orbits, is regulated by a single dimensionless control parameter that depends on the properties of the two bodies and on the total angular momentum of the system. The method described in this work results in …

An Investigation Of The Adsorption Mechanism Of An Aliphatic Nitrile (Tecflote S11) On Sulphide Mineral Surfaces., Trevor Holness

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

As grades of new base metal deposits decline and environmental restrictions on their extraction, increase, the mining industry is looking for new methods of processing minerals. This thesis, investigates the manner in which an aliphatic nitrile (TECFLOTE S11) is adsorbed onto the surface of sulphide mineral surfaces, to understand how TECFLOTE S11 can improve the extraction of base metals from their ores.

Bench tests, including micro-flotation, were conducted and their products examined by Time of Flight – Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to establish where the TECFLOTE S11 was adsorbed onto the mineral surface. The tests showed that the adsorption …

The Future Environmental And Health Impacts Of Coal, Robert B. Finkelman, Amy L. Wolfe, Michael S. Hendryx Nov 2020

The Future Environmental And Health Impacts Of Coal, Robert B. Finkelman, Amy L. Wolfe, Michael S. Hendryx

Faculty, Staff, and Affiliated Publications--KGS

In the United States, coal consumption in the last 12 years has declined from 1,045,140 million short tons in 2007 to 539,420 million short tons in 2019, a decrease of almost 50%. During that period the number of electric power coal generators has declined from 1,470 to 738 accounting for 21% of capacity. An even more dramatic decrease in coal use has occurred in Western Europe. This significant reduction in coal use and the concomitant closure of coal mines and coal-burning power plants will result in substantially cleaner air, reductions in respiratory problems such as asthma, less heart disease, fewer …

Adaptation Of Pt-Dna Binding Experiments Into A Multiweek Upperlevel Biochemistry Laboratory Activity, Keira Naff

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Platinum-based drugs are commonly used as anti-cancer therapeutics due to their abilities to bind to DNA and prohibit proliferation in cells. Although the concept of drug interactions within biomolecules is often introduced in undergraduate courses such as biochemistry and toxicology, there are very few laboratory activities that exist that provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to investigate this topic in the lab. During the Summer 2020 PRISM program, we worked to create a multi-week laboratory activity for upper-level biochemistry students focused on the investigation of the DNA binding abilities of common Pt anticancer therapeutics through biochemical modeling and wet laboratory …

Population Dynamics Of Waterfowl Wintering In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Usa, Abigail Harris, Thomas Hoke Nov 2020

Population Dynamics Of Waterfowl Wintering In The Mid-Atlantic Region, Usa, Abigail Harris, Thomas Hoke

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

A recent study (Rosenberg et al. 2019) has shown that bird populations in North America are experiencing major declines except for a few groups including waterfowl. However, this study focused only on the summer breeding populations and did not focus on regional dynamics. We utilized data from 62 Christmas Bird Count (CBC) count circles to evaluate population dynamics of common wintering waterfowl in the coastal Mid-Atlantic region (Delaware=7, Maryland=16, Virginia=18, North Carolina=21) since 1950. We found a 36% decline of wintering waterfowl relative abundance compared to 1950s. American wigeon and Canada goose had major population decreases while Snow goose had …

Making Artificial Cips Data With A Generative Adversarial Neural Network, Austin Hedges Nov 2020

Making Artificial Cips Data With A Generative Adversarial Neural Network, Austin Hedges

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs) have been studied for thirteen years by NASA's Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite. The Cloud Imaging and Particle Size (CIPS) instrument onboard AIM has taken many images of PMCs over this time. Such a large number of images makes CIPS data ideal for training neural networks which require large datasets. CIPS images were used to train a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to train towards being able to generate purely artificial CIPS-like images.

Flowers Are Essential To Maintain High Beetle Diversity (Coleoptera) In A Neotropical Rainforest Canopy, Susan Kirmse, Caroline S. Chaboo Nov 2020

Flowers Are Essential To Maintain High Beetle Diversity (Coleoptera) In A Neotropical Rainforest Canopy, Susan Kirmse, Caroline S. Chaboo

University of Nebraska State Museum: Staff and Affiliates, Publications

Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the megadiversity of angiosperms and insects. Flowers and their pollinators represent the most common terrestrial mutualistic interaction today and this is thought to have driven the evolution of angiosperms and their visitors. Within the framework of that interaction, this paper develops and tests two new hypotheses: 1) megadiversity of canopy beetles in tropical rainforests is largely based on flower resources, and 2) the majority of adult canopy beetles are adapted to visit flowers. To test hypothesis 1, the beetle fauna associated with 23 canopy tree species (13 families, 45 individuals) in a 1.4 …

Assessing The Impact Of Land Use And Land Cover Data Representation On Weather Forecast Quality: A Case Study In Central Mexico, Rezaul Mahmood

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In atmospheric modeling, an accurate representation of land cover is required because such information impacts water and energy budgets and, consequently, the performance of models in simulating regional climate. This study analyzes the impact of the land cover data on an operational weather forecasting system using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for central Mexico, with the aim of improving the quality of the operative forecast. Two experiments were conducted using different land cover datasets: a United States Geological Survey (USGS) map and an updated North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS) map. The experiments were conducted as a …

Machine Learning Augmentation Micro-Sensors For Smart Device Applications, Mohammad H. Hasan Nov 2020

Machine Learning Augmentation Micro-Sensors For Smart Device Applications, Mohammad H. Hasan

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Novel smart technologies such as wearable devices and unconventional robotics have been enabled by advancements in semiconductor technologies, which have miniaturized the sizes of transistors and sensors. These technologies promise great improvements to public health. However, current computational paradigms are ill-suited for use in novel smart technologies as they fail to meet their strict power and size requirements. In this dissertation, we present two bio-inspired colocalized sensing-and-computing schemes performed at the sensor level: continuous-time recurrent neural networks (CTRNNs) and reservoir computers (RCs). These schemes arise from the nonlinear dynamics of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), which facilitates computing, and the inherent ability …

A Posteriori Error Estimates For Maxwell's Equations Using Auxiliary Subspace Techniques, Ahmed El Sakori Nov 2020

A Posteriori Error Estimates For Maxwell's Equations Using Auxiliary Subspace Techniques, Ahmed El Sakori

Dissertations and Theses

The aim of our work is to construct provably efficient and reliable error estimates of discretization error for Nédélec (edge) element discretizations of Maxwell's equations on tetrahedral meshes. Our general approach for estimating the discretization error is to compute an approximate error function by solving an associated problem in an auxiliary space that is chosen so that:

-Efficiency and reliability results for the computed error estimates can be established under reasonable and verifiable assumptions.

-The linear system used to compute the approximate error function has condition number bounded independently of the discretization parameter.

In many applications, it is some functional …

Repeated Minimizers Of $P$-Frame Energies, Alexey Glazyrin, Josiah Park Nov 2020

Repeated Minimizers Of $P$-Frame Energies, Alexey Glazyrin, Josiah Park

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

For a collection of $N$ unit vectors ${X}=\{x_i\}_{i=1}^N$, define the $p$-frame energy of ${X}$ as the quantity $\sum_{i\neq j} |\langle x_i,x_j \rangle|^p$. In this paper, we connect the problem of minimizing this value to another optimization problem, thus giving new lower bounds for such energies. In particular, for $p<2$, we prove that this energy is at least $2(N-d) p^{-\frac p 2} (2-p)^{\frac {p-2} 2}$ which is sharp for $d\leq N\leq 2d$ and $p=1$. We also prove that for $1\leq m

Measurements And Mitigation Of Scattered Light Noise In Ligo, Corey Daniel Austin Nov 2020

Measurements And Mitigation Of Scattered Light Noise In Ligo, Corey Daniel Austin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) detectors use 1064 nm lasers to measure the tiny fluctuations in spacetime that occur when gravitational waves pass through the earth. LIGO makes use of advanced coating methods and materials to limit the amount of light that scatters from the main beam, but some amount of light does scatter. This stray light can interact with surfaces inside the interferometer that are not seismically isolated and then recombine with the main beam, introducing excess noise into the gravitational wave channel. This thesis reviews the methods for modeling scattered light with ray tracing software and analytical models, for …
