Fundamental Studies Of The Singlet Oxygenation Of Water Soluble Biological And Environmental Important Molecules, Marcela Jaramillo
Fundamental Studies Of The Singlet Oxygenation Of Water Soluble Biological And Environmental Important Molecules, Marcela Jaramillo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Singlet oxygen, 1O2, can be easily generated by a sensitizer, solar radiation, and molecular oxygen. 1O2 is very important in a range of biological and environmental systems. The products and mechanisms of the 1O2 reactions are well studied in organic solvents, and despite well-established solvent effects, studies on the reactions of the singlet oxygen in aqueous media are limited. Herein, 1O2 reactions with biologically and environmentally relevant conjugated π systems in aqueous solutions are presented. Water-soluble isomeric 1, 3-hexadienes are simple mechanistic probes for the 1O2 reactions since concerted and non-concerted pathways produce distinct products. The isomerization of sorbic acid …

Due to the emissions of air pollutants, acid rain in southern China poses a great threat to terrestrial ecosystems. However, its influences on ecological processes such as litter decomposition and soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation are still not clear. The aim of this study was to understand the potential mechanisms of carbon sequestration change in response to long-term acid rain in a subtropical forest. A field experiment with simulated acid rain (SAR) treatment was conducted in a monsoon evergreen broadleaf forest in southern China. Four levels of SAR treatment were implemented by irrigating the plots with water of different pH …

Production And Characterization Of Twelve Different Biochars And Evaluating Their Effects On Soil Health And Plant Growth, Shagufta Gaffar
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biochar has been a topic of growing interest in the scientific community. It is a product derived from carbon rich organic materials through the process of pyrolysis. It has received wide attention as a means to improve soil fertility and crop productivity, absorb pollutants in soil, and sequester carbon to mitigate climate change. Recent research on biochar explores its impacts on the environment with particular focus on use as a soil amendment in agriculture. Biochar produced from different biomass and under different production process effects the environmental and agronomic impacts of its application in different ways. This means biochar can …
Temporal And Causal Inference With Longitudinal Multi-Omics Microbiome Data, Daniel Ruiz-Perez
Temporal And Causal Inference With Longitudinal Multi-Omics Microbiome Data, Daniel Ruiz-Perez
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbiomes are communities of microbes inhabiting an environmental niche. Thanks to next generation sequencing technologies, it is now possible to study microbial communities, their impact on the host environment, and their role in specific diseases and health. Technology has also triggered the increased generation of multi-omics microbiome data, including metatranscriptomics (quantitative survey of the complete metatranscriptome of the microbial community), metabolomics (quantitative profile of the entire set of metabolites present in the microbiome's environmental niche), and host transcriptomics (gene expression profile of the host). Consequently, another major challenge in microbiome data analysis is the integration of multi-omics data sets and …
Spontaneous Raman Scattering Enhancement With Microcavities And Multipass Resonators For Trace Gas Detection, Juan Sebastian Gomez Velez
Spontaneous Raman Scattering Enhancement With Microcavities And Multipass Resonators For Trace Gas Detection, Juan Sebastian Gomez Velez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The continual increase in production and use of chemicals in an ever-growing field of applications naturally brings forth the necessity to accurately and efficiently measure molecular composition. Spontaneous Raman scattering is a reliable technique which can optically identify molecules based on their intrinsic rotational-vibrational energy structure. The Raman emission from a substance can be spectrally analyzed to detect molecular species simultaneously and with isotopic sensitivity using a single laser source. However, even though the process is non-invasive and effective, the rate at which the emission occurs is notoriously low due to a weak scattering cross-section. Therefore, research into the development …

The investigation of atmospheric tsunamigenic acoustic and gravity wave (TAGW) dynamics, from the ocean surface to the thermosphere, is performed through the numerical computations of the 3D compressible nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations. Tsunami propagation is first simulated using a nonlinear shallow water model, which incorporates instantaneous or temporal evolutions of initial tsunami distributions (ITD). Ocean surface dynamics are then imposed as a boundary condition to excite TAGWs into the atmosphere from the ground level. We perform a case study of a large tsunami associated with the 2011 M9.1 Tohuku-Oki earthquake and parametric studies with simplified and demonstrative bathymetry and ITD. Our …
The Utilization Of Shared Energy Storage In Energy Systems: Design, Modeling And Optimization, Rui Dai
The Utilization Of Shared Energy Storage In Energy Systems: Design, Modeling And Optimization, Rui Dai
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Energy storage (ES) plays a significant role in modern smart grids and energy systems. With the advances of ES technologies, efficiently applying ES to energy systems has become the bottleneck for achieving the benefits of ES. The traditional approach of utilizing ES is the so-called distributed framework in which there is a separate ES for each individual user. Due to the inherent limits in the distributed framework such as cost inefficiency and space limitations, many studies have promoted to utilize a shared ES in energy systems to further exploit the potentials of ES. However, current studies always focus on maximizing …

Maternal Social Status, Offspring 2d:4d Ratio And Postnatal Growth, In Macaca Mulatta (Rhesus Macaques), Juan Pablo Arroyo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Early life exposure to stressors can disrupt growth and development, resulting in long-term compromised function and increased risk for disease throughout the lifecourse. Maternal exposure to psychosocial stressors (i.e., stressors derived from social status, social inequalities, and social interactions) during pregnancy has been associated with reduced fetal growth, adverse birth outcomes, and increased morbidity for the offspring later in life. Maternal hormonal responses to stress, such as fluctuations in glucocorticoids (e.g., cortisol) and androgens (e.g., testosterone), can result in increased developmental instability, interfere with offspring growth in-utero, and may alter developmental processes of sexual dimorphism. Second digit to fourth digit …
Detrital Zircon (U-Th)/He Thermochronology In The Greater Caucasus: Implications For Thermal And Tectonic History Along-Strike, Kate Gutterman
Detrital Zircon (U-Th)/He Thermochronology In The Greater Caucasus: Implications For Thermal And Tectonic History Along-Strike, Kate Gutterman
LSU Master's Theses
Located along the northernmost boundary of the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone, the Greater Caucasus are a young, actively deforming mountain range striking WNW-ESE between the Black and Caspian Seas. Previous thermochronometric studies predominantly focused on the western portion of the range partially constrain the thermal and tectonic history of the Greater Caucasus. However, due to the complex nature of the tectonics in the region, multiple competing tectonic models have been suggested to explain the exact timing of collision and onset of rapid uplift. Furthermore, the Greater Caucasus exhibit competing along-strike gradients in modern shortening rates, mean annual precipitation, structural architecture and …

U/Pb Zircon Ages Of Felsic Veins In The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex, Idaho, U.S.A: Implications For Magmatism And Vein Source, Kyle Tollefson
LSU Master's Theses
Veins associated with igneous activity provide numerous insights into the geologic history of an area. The Sawtooth Metamorphic Complex (SMC) in Idaho is a roof pendent of highgrade rocks cross-cut by numerous felsic veins of unknown age and source. Obtaining U/Pb zircon geochronology of these veins can facilitate understanding the ages of magmatism in the region, their source, when nearby batholiths were juxtaposed to the SMC, and provide additional insights into the geologic evolution of the area. Each potential source of these veins has a distinct age: the Sawtooth batholith (ca. 47 Ma), the Idaho batholith (98-53 Ma), an anatectic …
On The Construction And Mathematical Analysis Of The Wavelet Transform And Its Matricial Properties, Diego Sejas Viscarra
On The Construction And Mathematical Analysis Of The Wavelet Transform And Its Matricial Properties, Diego Sejas Viscarra
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
We study the properties of computational methods for the Wavelet Transform and its Inverse from the point of view of Linear Algebra. We present a characterization of such methods as matrix products, proving in particular that each iteration corresponds to the multiplication of an adequate unitary matrix. From that point we prove that some important properties of the Continuous Wavelet Transform, such as linearity, distributivity over matrix multiplication, isometry, etc., are inherited by these discrete methods.
This work is divided into four sections. The first section corresponds to the classical theoretical foundation of harmonic analysis with wavelets; it is used …
Dna Self-Assembly Design For Gear Graphs, Chiara Mattamira
Dna Self-Assembly Design For Gear Graphs, Chiara Mattamira
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Application of graph theory to the well-known complementary properties of DNA strands has resulted in new insights about more efficient ways to form DNA nanostructures, which have been discovered as useful tools for drug delivery, biomolecular computing, and biosensors. The key concept underlying DNA nanotechnology is the formation of complete DNA complexes out of a given collection of branched junction molecules. These molecules can be modeled in the abstract as portions of graphs made up of vertices and half-edges, where complete edges are representations of double-stranded DNA pieces that have joined together. For efficiency, one aim is to minimize the …
Generalised Fibonacci Sequences Under Modular Arithmetic, Connor Riddlesden
Generalised Fibonacci Sequences Under Modular Arithmetic, Connor Riddlesden
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
In this paper, we find patterns and count the number of distinct generalised Fibonacci sequences under modular arithmetic. We will start with the repetition of the normal Fibonacci sequence modulo an integer, m, where m is greater than or equal to two and make connections to its dependency on the prime factorisation of m. We will then extend the complexity of the problem into generalised Fibonacci sequences with different starting values. Finally we will present some interesting observations that are still open problems.
The Name Tag Problem, Christian Carley
The Name Tag Problem, Christian Carley
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The Name Tag Problem is a thought experiment that, when formalized, serves as an introduction to the concept of an orthomorphism of $\Zn$. Orthomorphisms are a type of group permutation and their graphs are used to construct mutually orthogonal Latin squares, affine planes and other objects. This paper walks through the formalization of the Name Tag Problem and its linear solutions, which center around modular arithmetic. The characterization of which linear mappings give rise to these solutions developed in this paper can be used to calculate the exact number of linear orthomorphisms for any additive group Z/nZ, which is demonstrated …
Configuration Spaces For The Working Undergraduate, Lucas Williams
Configuration Spaces For The Working Undergraduate, Lucas Williams
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Configuration spaces form a rich class of topological objects which are not usually presented to an undergraduate audience. Our aim is to present configuration spaces in a manner accessible to the advanced undergraduate. We begin with a slight introduction to the topic before giving necessary background on algebraic topology. We then discuss configuration spaces of the euclidean plane and the braid groups they give rise to. Lastly, we discuss configuration spaces of graphs and the various techniques which have been developed to pursue their study.
On The Equitable Total (𝑘+1)-Coloring Of 𝑘-Regular Graphs, Bryson Stemock
On The Equitable Total (𝑘+1)-Coloring Of 𝑘-Regular Graphs, Bryson Stemock
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
A graph is considered to be totally colored when one color is assigned to each vertex and to each edge so that no adjacent or incident vertices or edges bear the same color. The \textit{total chromatic number} of a graph is the least number of colors required to totally color a graph. This paper focuses on $k$-regular graphs, whose symmetry and regularity allow for a closer look at general total coloring strategies. Such graphs include the previously defined M\"obius ladder, which has a total chromatic number of 5, as well as the newly defined bird's nest, which is shown to …
Colorings And Sudoku Puzzles, Katelyn D. May
Colorings And Sudoku Puzzles, Katelyn D. May
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
Map colorings refer to assigning colors to different regions of a map. In particular, a typical application is to assign colors so that no two adjacent regions are the same color. Map colorings are easily converted to graph coloring problems: regions correspond to vertices and edges between two vertices exist for adjacent regions. We extend these notions to Shidoku, 4x4 Sudoku puzzles, and standard 9x9 Sudoku puzzles by demanding unique entries in rows, columns, and regions. Motivated by our study of ring and field theory, we expand upon the standard division algorithm to study Gr\"obner bases in multivariate polynomial rings. …
Investigating First Returns: The Effect Of Multicolored Vectors, Shakuan Frankson, Myka Terry
Investigating First Returns: The Effect Of Multicolored Vectors, Shakuan Frankson, Myka Terry
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
By definition, a first return is the immediate moment that a path, using vectors in the Cartesian plane, touches the x-axis after leaving it previously from a given point; the initial point is often the origin. In this case, using certain diagonal and horizontal vectors while restricting the movements to the first quadrant will cause almost every first return to end at the point (2n,0), where 2n counts the equal number of up and down steps in a path. The exception will be explained further in the sections below. Using the first returns of Catalan, Schröder, and Motzkin numbers, which …
New Theorems For The Digraphs Of Commutative Rings, Morgan Bounds
New Theorems For The Digraphs Of Commutative Rings, Morgan Bounds
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
The digraphs of commutative rings under modular arithmetic reveal intriguing cycle patterns, many of which have yet to be explained. To help illuminate these patterns, we establish a set of new theorems. Rings with relatively prime moduli a and b are used to predict cycles in the digraph of the ring with modulus ab. Rings that use Pythagorean primes as their modulus are shown to always have a cycle in common. Rings with perfect square moduli have cycles that relate to their square root.
On The Enumeration Of Shapes, May Cai, Nicholas Liao
On The Enumeration Of Shapes, May Cai, Nicholas Liao
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
We define a shape as a union of finitely many line segments. Given an arrangement of lines on a plane, we count the number of shapes in the arrangement by examining the symmetries of the arrangement and applying Burnside's lemma. We further establish a generating function for the number of distinct line segments on a line with k distinguished points. We list all affine line arrangements of four and five line segments, together with the corresponding number of shapes on them.
Iterated Line Graphs On Bi-Regular Graphs And Trees, Brenden Balch
Iterated Line Graphs On Bi-Regular Graphs And Trees, Brenden Balch
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
In 1965, van Rooij and Wilf considered sequences of line graphs, in which they grouped sequences of line graphs into four categories. We’ll add to their research by presenting results on sequences of line graphs for star graphs and bi-regular graphs. We will then investigate slight variations of star graphs.
A Connection Between Quadratic Rational Maps And Linear Fractional Maps, Laura Schlesinger, Anna Marek, Ella White, Danqi Yin
A Connection Between Quadratic Rational Maps And Linear Fractional Maps, Laura Schlesinger, Anna Marek, Ella White, Danqi Yin
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
This research project is an investigation into quadratic rational maps, $\vp$, of one complex variable that map the unit disk to itself. Previous research \cite{brittney} shows that for each $\vp$, a corresponding linear fractional map $\zeta$ can be found using the coefficients of $\vp$, and this $\zeta$ can be used to characterize functions in the kernel of the adjoint of the composition operator with symbol $\vp$, defined on a space of analytic functions. In this paper, we show sufficient conditions to ensure that certain cases of $\vp$ map the unit disk to itself and find all the forms of $\zeta$. …

During the first phase of the Biomass Burn Operational Project (BBOP) field campaign, conducted in the Pacific Northwest, the DOE G-1 aircraft was used to follow the time evolution of wildfire smoke from near the point of emission to locations 2-3.5 h downwind. In nine flights we made repeated transects of wildfire plumes at varying downwind distances and could thereby follow the plume's time evolution. On average there was little change in dilution-normalized aerosol mass concentration as a function of downwind distance. This consistency hides a dynamic system in which primary aerosol particles are evaporating and secondary ones condensing. Organic …
Porosity And Permeability Extremes In An Eogenetic Carbonate Platform: Mechanisms For Formation And Implications For Fluid Flow, Charles I. Breithaupt
Porosity And Permeability Extremes In An Eogenetic Carbonate Platform: Mechanisms For Formation And Implications For Fluid Flow, Charles I. Breithaupt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Carbonate rocks contain about a third of the worlds drinking water and host 60-70% of proven hydrocarbon reserves. Effective development and management of these resources relies heavily on geologic concepts used to predict the distribution, and magnitude of porosity and permeability in the aquifer or reservoir. Most geologic concepts used for flow prediction have been developed in telegenic limestones, where fracture networks, bedding plains, and conduits hosted in effectively impermeable bedrock control the movement of fluids, and evolution of porosity. However, a growing body of work has recognized fluid flow within eogenetic limestones is fundamentally different, and that new concepts …

We develop an open-access database that provides a large array of datasets specialized for magnetic compounds as well as magnetic clusters. Our focus is on rare-earth-free magnets. Available datasets include (i) crystallography, (ii) thermodynamic properties, such as the formation energy, and (iii) magnetic properties that are essential for magnetic-material design. Our database features a large number of stable and metastable structures discovered through our adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) searches. Many of these AGA structures have better magnetic properties when compared to those of the existing rare-earth-free magnets and the theoretical structures in other databases. Our database places particular emphasis on …
