The Use Of Evidential Reasoning Model With Biomarkers In Pancreatic Cancer Prediction, Qianhui Fan
The Use Of Evidential Reasoning Model With Biomarkers In Pancreatic Cancer Prediction, Qianhui Fan
Master's Projects
In this project, an evidential reasoning model is built to amalgamate factors that could be used in early detection of pancreatic cancer. Our machine learning model outputs a probability of a given patient having prostate cancer based on various input variables. These variables include health history factors, such as smoking and medical history, technical artifacts, such as biopsy sequencing technology, and genomic biomarkers such as mutational, transcriptional and methylomic profiles, cfDNA, and copy number variation. The dataset used in this project is a part of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project and was collected from the National Cancer Institute (NIH) …
Multigrid For The Nonlinear Power Flow Equations, Enrique Pereira Batista
Multigrid For The Nonlinear Power Flow Equations, Enrique Pereira Batista
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
The continuously changing structure of power systems and the inclusion of renewable
energy sources are leading to changes in the dynamics of modern power grid,
which have brought renewed attention to the solution of the AC power flow equations.
In particular, development of fast and robust solvers for the power flow problem
continues to be actively investigated. A novel multigrid technique for coarse-graining
dynamic power grid models has been developed recently. This technique uses an
algebraic multigrid (AMG) coarsening strategy applied to the weighted
graph Laplacian that arises from the power network's topology for the construction
of coarse-grain approximations to …
Modeling Fluid Phenomena In The Context Of The Constrained Vapor Bubble System, James Barrett
Modeling Fluid Phenomena In The Context Of The Constrained Vapor Bubble System, James Barrett
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the fluid phenomena observed within what is known as the constrained vapor bubble system. The constrained vapor bubble system is a closed system consisting of a quartz cuvette partially filled with liquid and used as a coolant device. Heat is applied to the heater end which causes the liquid to evaporate and condense on the cooled end of the cuvette. Liquid travels back to the heated end via capillary flow in the corners. A pure vapor bubble is formed in the center of the cuvette giving rise to the name of the experiment. The constrained vapor …

Pre-project research is a strategic stage of the object design process, based on the results of which a decision is made on the level of competitiveness, development prospects, setting a task for the project, labor intensity and feasibilityof creating a system in general.
The existing methods of pre-project research have a high degree of generalization and are practically not formalized in any way. The disadvantage of these methods is that they consider only specific individual prototypes and are aimed at finding solutions to current problems and eliminating individual shortcomings of a particular prototype. Thus, it Is Concluded that It Is …
Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar
KGI Theses and Dissertations
The need for production processes of large biotherapeutic particles, such as virus-based particles and extracellular vesicles, has risen due to increased demand in the development of vaccinations, gene therapies, and cancer treatments. Liquid chromatography plays a significant role in the purification process and is routinely used with therapeutic protein production. However, performance with larger macromolecules is often inconsistent, and parameter estimation for process development can be extremely time- and resource-intensive. This thesis aimed to utilize advances in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling to generate a first-principle model of the chromatographic process while minimizing model parameter estimation's physical resource demand. Specifically, …

Atom Transfer Radical Processes: From Catalyst Design To Polymer Synthesis, Characterization, And Application, Michael Novak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to the toxicity of heavy metals and their prevalence in the environment there exists a need to develop highly active transition metal catalysts ultimately reducing the amount needed for chemical transformations. Additionally, there is interest in the scientific community for creating new materials that can remove these pollutants from industrial wastewater prior to its release into the environment. The work presented here focuses on the reduction and removal of heavy metals from industrial hazardous waste by designing novel highly active catalysts and developing polymeric adsorbents.
Highly active catalyst complexes consisting of novel hybrid ligands, 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl-bis-[2-(pyridylmethyl)amine] (M1-T2), and bis[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-2-(pyridylmethyl)amine (M2-T1), …
Fluoride Removal With Augmented Bentonite In Drinking Water And Community Perceptions In Arusha, Tanzania, Kara Okular
Fluoride Removal With Augmented Bentonite In Drinking Water And Community Perceptions In Arusha, Tanzania, Kara Okular
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High fluoride concentrations in drinking water affect millions of people around the world. The World Health Organization recommended a fluoride concentration in drinking water of ≤ 1.5 mg/L; fluoride above this concentration can cause long-term dental and skeletal fluorosis. Fluoride imparts no taste to water; therefore, people do not realize that they are ingesting high fluoridated water. Researchers sought to develop a material to remove fluoride from drinking water through sorption. Aluminum was used to form a double ionic layer on the bentonite clay surface. Once mixed in contaminated water, a coagulant, ferric sulfate, was used to separate the bentonite …
Functionalized Materials From Atom Transfer Radical Processes, Sean Fischer
Functionalized Materials From Atom Transfer Radical Processes, Sean Fischer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This work is focused on the synthesis, characterization, and application of functionalized materials prepared from atom transfer radical processes. Atom transfer radical processes encompass both atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) and polymerization (ATRP) reactions, both of which are catalyzed by ppm amounts of copper complexes. The synthetic efforts of ATRA include increasing adduct selectivity through optimization of reaction conditions to generate small molecules in high to moderate yields. ATRA provides retention of the halogen moiety, which is an attractive functional group that can be further modified with other transformations. Specifically, the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne [3+2] cycloaddition (CuAAC) allows for the realization …
Understanding Biomass Upgrading Through Hydrogenolysis Reactions: Kinetics And Mechanism, Jalal Tavana
Understanding Biomass Upgrading Through Hydrogenolysis Reactions: Kinetics And Mechanism, Jalal Tavana
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation involves several hydrogenolysis reactions but is mainly focused on hydrodechlorination (HDC) of chlorobenzene (PhCl) and hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of 2-furancarboxylic acid (FCA). Hydrodechlorination of PhCl has been the subject of research for some time. Here, we used a Pd/C catalyst to study this reaction though rigorous kinetics and mechanistic analyses in a CSTR reactor. The H2/D2 kinetic isotope effect (KIE) experiment revealed that H2 is not involved in a rate controlling step. The kinetics data are in agreement with similar systems reported before and follow a first-order dependence on chlorobenzene, half order for hydrogen and …

Fluorinated Phthalonitriles And Phthalocyanines: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Properties, Marius Pelmus
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Since their discovery at the beginning of the 20th century, phthalocyanines (Pc) have come a long way; today they are replacing the porphyrins (natural products) in most of their applications. The functionalization of the organic macrocycle, the use of different metals, and the change of the axial ligands resulted in Pc applications in a wide range of fields, ranging from photochemistry, paints, catalysis, to fuel cells and cosmetic products.
In Dr. Gorun’s group was developed a series of electron-deficient Pcs that benefit from a Teflon-like chemical shield, meant also to break the π-π interactions, namely the F64PcM …
Thermo-Fluid Characterizations Of The Powder-Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Processes Using Laser And Electron Beam, M Shafiqur Rahman
Thermo-Fluid Characterizations Of The Powder-Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing Processes Using Laser And Electron Beam, M Shafiqur Rahman
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The powder-bed fusion (PBF) process is a subdivision of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology where a heat source at a controlled speed selectively fuses regions of a powder-bed material to form three-dimensional (3-D) parts. Two of the most effective PBF processes are selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam additive manufacturing (EBAM), which can fabricate full-density metallic parts in a layer-by-layer fashion. In this study, thermal behavior and melt-pool dynamics in the PBF process are investigated by developing 3-D multiphysics-based thermo-fluid models for both SLM and EBAM, containing Ti-6Al-4V alloy as a powder-bed material. The laser and electron beams are modeled …

Multi-Level Small Area Estimation Based On Calibrated Hierarchical Likelihood Approach Through Bias Correction With Applications To Covid-19 Data, Nirosha Rathnayake
Theses & Dissertations
Small area estimation (SAE) has been widely used in a variety of applications to draw estimates in geographic domains represented as a metropolitan area, district, county, or state. The direct estimation methods provide accurate estimates when the sample size of study participants within each area unit is sufficiently large, but it might not always be realistic to have large sample sizes of study participants when considering small geographical regions. Meanwhile, high dimensional socio-ecological data exist at the community level, providing an opportunity for model-based estimation by incorporating rich auxiliary information at the individual and area levels. Thus, it is critical …

Current Issues in Emerging eLearning
This article describes a cooperative research partnership among a large public university, a for-profit private institution and their common adaptive learning platform provider. The focus of this work explored adaptive analytics that uses data the investigators describe as metaphorical “digital learning dust” produced by the platform as a matter of course. The information configured itself into acquired knowledge, growth, baseline status and engagement. Two complimentary models evolved. The first, in the public university, captured end-of-course data for predicting success. The second approach, in the private university, formed the basis of a dynamic real-time data analytic algorithm. In both cases the …

Live Cell Super-Resolution Microscopy Quanitifies An Interaction Between Influenza Hemagglutinin And Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-Bisphosphate, Jaqulin N. Wallace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Influenza virus, colloquially known as the flu, is an acute respiratory disease that infects several millions of individuals each year in the U.S. and kills tens of thousands of those infected. Yearly viral vaccines are widely available, however, due to the virus’s high mutation rate, their efficacy varies greatly. Due to the variability in vaccine efficiency against seasonal influenza, and the potential for even more pathogenic versions of influenza to emerge at any time, there is a high demand for a universal treatment option.
Influenza virus hijacks a variety of host cell components in order to replicate. The glycoprotein hemagglutinin …
Bayesian Modeling For Longitudinal Count Data: Applications In Biomedical Research, Morshed Alam
Bayesian Modeling For Longitudinal Count Data: Applications In Biomedical Research, Morshed Alam
Theses & Dissertations
Biomedical count data such as the number of seizures for epilepsy patients, number of new tumors at each visit or the number vomiting after each chemo-radiation for the cancer patients are common. Often these counts are measured longitudinally from patients or within clusters in multi-site trials. The Poisson and negative binomial models may not be adequate when data exhibit over or under-dispersion, respectively. On the contrary, a variety of dispersion conditions in count data can be captured by Conway-Maxwell Poisson (CMP) model.
This doctoral dissertation relegates to developing a statistical methodology to model longitudinal count data distributed as CMP via …

We must ensure that trials are scientifically, politically, and socially robust, publicly accountable, and widely transparent.
Gene drive organisms (GDOs), whose genomes have been genetically engineered to spread a desired allele through a population, have the potential to transform the way societies address a wide range of daunting public health and environmental challenges. The development, testing, and release of GDOs, however, are complex and often controversial. A key challenge is to clarify the appropriate roles of developers and others actively engaged in work with GDOs in decision-making processes, and, in particular, how to establish partnerships with relevant authorities and other …

An Intramolecular Method For The Formation Of Glycosidic Bonds, Sudeera Nadeeshani Kamburugamuwa Kamburugamuwe Loku Acharige
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The improved understanding of carbohydrate functions in biological systems has increased the demand for well-characterized and pure carbohydrates in biomedical research. Chemical synthesis is the most feasible method to satisfy the scientific demand despite the inherent challenges of the glycosylation reaction. Therefore, it is essential to investigate novel methods for the formation of glycosidic bonds. In this work, an intramolecular method was developed using a thio-methylene-silyl linker to tether a glycosyl donor and acceptor. The glycosylation conditions resulted in the formation of both anomeric isomers with a preference for the inversion pathway, which is inconsistent with an entirely intermolecular glycosylation …
Machine Learning Model Selection For Predicting Global Bathymetry, Nicholas P. Moran
Machine Learning Model Selection For Predicting Global Bathymetry, Nicholas P. Moran
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This work is concerned with the viability of Machine Learning (ML) in training models for predicting global bathymetry, and whether there is a best fit model for predicting that bathymetry. The desired result is an investigation of the ability for ML to be used in future prediction models and to experiment with multiple trained models to determine an optimum selection. Ocean features were aggregated from a set of external studies and placed into two minute spatial grids representing the earth's oceans. A set of regression models, classification models, and a novel classification model were then fit to this data and …

Nanomaterial Composites Based On Potassium Hexaniobate, Perovskites, And Iron Triazole Spin Crossover Complexes, Alexis A. Blanco
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Development of novel materials with sought after properties has been the forefront in the field of nanomaterials. Hybrid nanomaterial architectures, or nanocomposites, is an important subgroup within the material chemistry umbrella. One such example of nanocomposite systems is peapod-like structures that are composed of 0D nanoparticles (“peas”) and 2D nanosheets (“pods”). Nanopeapods may display unique properties that were not attainable within individual components. BaTiO3 nanoparticles can be produced using solvothermal methods (20 h) in the presence of Ba(NO3)2, titanium (IV) butoxide, and oleic acid as the surfactant. Synthesis parameters were modified to allow for both …

Applied Molecular Dynamics: From Targeting Viral Helicases, To Understanding The Interactions Of Cucurbituril Complexes In Ionic Solutions, Bryan Raubenolt
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Molecular Dynamics simulations are a highly useful tool in helping understand the fundamental interactions present in a variety of chemical systems. The work discussed here illustrates it’s use in determining the conformational dynamics of the Zika and SARS-Cov-2 helicase in a physiological environment, largely in an effort to discover inhibitors capable of rendering the protein inert. Additionally, we show how it can be used to understand paradoxical trends in the anion-induced precipitation of Cucurbituril cavitands.
Viral helicases are motor proteins tasked with unwinding the viral dsRNA, a crucial step in preparing the strand to be translatable by host cells. By …
Accurate Quantitation Of Hexavalent Chromium For Reference Standard Certification And Quality Control Testing Using Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry, James E. Henderson
Accurate Quantitation Of Hexavalent Chromium For Reference Standard Certification And Quality Control Testing Using Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry, James E. Henderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ability to perform accurate, repeatable, and defensible elemental and molecular speciated analysis is immensely significant for measurements that support human health, environmental science, and industry. This is especially true since trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] is necessary for proper nutrition, while hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is extremely toxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic. The main challenges associated with speciated analysis are related to reactive species that are continuously transformed or converted to other species during sample processing. Accurate determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species require a method that is capable of monitoring and correcting for interconversion, bias, and instrumental error. Traditional quantitative methods, such …
Control Of Corrosion On Ss316l Using Surface Initiated Polymers, Alexander Rupprecht
Control Of Corrosion On Ss316l Using Surface Initiated Polymers, Alexander Rupprecht
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pitting corrosion is arguably one of the most destructive and dangerous forms of corrosion, resulting in damage to structures, the environment, and public health. In addition, damage caused to structures such as bridges, pipelines, and boats, corrosion also has a profound effect on the biomedical community. Implanted metallic devices (i.e., vascular stents and artificial joints) are prone to pitting corrosion caused by aggressive ions present in extracellular fluid. To provide a corrosion-resistant surface on SS316L, films of poly(styrene), poly(methyl acrylate), and poly(methyl methacrylate) were formed using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The resulting hydrophobic polymer films had a fractional …

Internet of Things (IoT) devices are mass-produced and rapidly released to the public in a rough state. IoT devices are produced by various companies satisfying various goals, such as monitoring the environment, senor trigger cameras, on-demand electrical switches. These IoT devices are produced by companies to meet a market demand quickly, producing a rough software solution that customers or other enterprises willingly buy with the expectation they will have software updates after production. These IoT devices are often heterogeneous in nature, only to receive updates at infrequently intervals, and can remain out of sight on a home or office network …

Visualization Of Large Networks Using Recursive Community Detection, Xinyuan Fan
Master's Projects
Networks show relationships between people or things. For instance, a person has a social network of friends, and websites are connected through a network of hyperlinks. Networks are most commonly represented as graphs, so graph drawing becomes significant for network visualization. An effective graph drawing can quickly reveal connections and patterns within a network that would be difficult to discern without visual aid. But graph drawing becomes a challenge for large networks. Am- biguous edge crossings are inevitable in large networks with numerous nodes and edges, and large graphs often become a complicated tangle of lines. These issues greatly reduce …

In this study, we present results from experiments on the retention of single oil droplets rising through a two-layer density stratification, with the goal of quantifying and parametrizing the impact of stratification on timescales that describe the delay in rising. These experiments confirm the significant slowdown observed in past literature of settling and rising particles and droplets in stratification, and these are the first experiments to study single liquid droplets as opposed to solid particles or bubbles. By tracking the motion of the droplets as they rise through a stratified fluid, we identify two new timescales which quantitatively describe this …
