Crash Course: Student Team Uses Statistical Modeling And Bigelow Partnership To Map Moose-Car "Hot Zones", Gerry Boyle, Max Slomiak
Colby Magazine
The project began in 2004 when Alex Jospe ’06, a Nordic skier who traveled Maine roads to meets, decided to use skills learned in a GIS class taught by Associate Professor of Environmental Studies Philip Nyhus. Jospe used data supplied by state transportation officials to map moose-collision hot zones. On a trip to Vermont, the map came in handy. “She came back all excited and said, ‘I saw a moose right where my map said I would,’” Nyhus recalled.

Since convolutional neural networks (CNNs) perform well at learning generalizable image priors from large-scale data, these models have been extensively applied to image restoration and related tasks. Recently, another class of neural architectures, Transformers, have shown significant performance gains on natural language and high-level vision tasks. While the Transformer model mitigates the shortcomings of CNNs (i.e., limited receptive field and in-adaptability to input content), its computational complexity grows quadratically with the spatial resolution, therefore making it infeasible to apply to most image restoration tasks involving high-resolution images. In this work, we propose an efficient Transformer model by making several key …

Breeding And Feeding Habitat Selection By An Island Endemic Bird May Increase Its Vulnerability To Climate Change, Paul M. Radley, Eddie J. B. Van Etten, David Blake, Robert A. Davis
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Characterizing patterns of habitat use is an important first step for effective conservation planning. Species restricted to low-lying islands are at greatest risk from climate change-related sea level rise, and requirements for breeding and foraging habitat may determine their risk from tidal inundation. The endangered Micronesian Scrubfowl (Megapodius laperouse senex) is a model species for understanding these impacts. This species faces the cumulative challenges of tourist visitation, invasive species, and rising sea levels, yet little is understood about its habitat use in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon Conservation Area (RISL) of Palau. We studied the habitat requirements of this mound-nesting …
Operational Detection Of Sun Glints In Dscovr Epic Images, Tamás Várnai, Alexander Marshak, Alexander Kostinski
Operational Detection Of Sun Glints In Dscovr Epic Images, Tamás Várnai, Alexander Marshak, Alexander Kostinski
Michigan Tech Publications
Satellite images often feature sun glints caused by the specular reflection of sunlight from water surfaces or from horizontally oriented ice crystals occurring in clouds. Such glints can prevent accurate retrievals of atmospheric and surface properties using existing algorithms, but the glints can also be used to infer more about the glint-causing objects—for example about the microphysical properties and radiative effects of ice clouds. This paper introduces the recently released operational glint product of the Earth Polychromatic Camera (EPIC) onboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) spacecraft. Most importantly, the paper describes the algorithm used for generating the key component …

Animal Production From Tree-Pasture Association Systems In Brazil, João C. Saibro
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Agroforestry systems (AFS) in general and silvipastoral systems (SPS) in particular, have been studied intensively in Brazil since the 1980’s. The majority of the research work has been conducted in the wet tropical Amazon region, in the semi-arid conditions of the Northeast, and under subtropical soil and climatic conditions in the Southeast or in the South. Research emphasis has been placed on interactions between the main components of AFS: tree, pasture, soil and microclimatic elements. Evaluation of animal performance in SPS generally has not been the main objective of experiments. A recent survey of research on SPS using Eucalyptus spp …
Corrosion Prevention On Aluminum Alloy, Andrea Brenner
Corrosion Prevention On Aluminum Alloy, Andrea Brenner
Symposium of Student Scholars
Aluminum alloy (Al-alloy) is a widely used metal in construction, aerospace, aviation, and other necessary fields due to its lightweight and tweakable properties. However, corrosion is inevitable on metals and alloys, and that causes millions of dollars of revenue loss every year. Therefore, we propose to research fabricating coating to prevent corrosion on Al-alloy. This study uses an iron-based metal-organic framework (MOF) and polyurethane (PU) based composite coating to prevent corrosion on the Al-alloy. The makeup of the composite material is changed by varying the percentage of MOF. In addition, a binder is also used to enhance the homogenization between …

Impact Of The Water Content In The Therapeutic Deep Eutectic Solvents, Noam Lewit, James Stewart, Oluseyi Olawuyi, Mohammed A. Halim
Symposium of Student Scholars
Deep eutectic solvent(s) (DES) are the new generation of greener and more sustainable solvents, formulated by the complex of hydrogen bond in the molecules. The solvents allow us to achieve a significantly lower freezing point compared to its components, an affordable formulation and a technology that is typically formulated to improve the bioavailability of a drug. In this research project, we synthesized an ibuprofen-menthol based therapeutic deep eutectic solvent and investigated how water content affects the structure and dynamics of the solvent. For synthesizing the ibuprofen-menthol DES, 2.0629 g of Ibuprofen and 4.6881 g of menthol were placed in a …

Pilot Study Exploring The Impact That Laboratory Instruction Has On A Student's Stem Professional Identity , Datiel Dayani, Dr. Michelle Head
Symposium of Student Scholars
STEM professional identity serves as one lens through which researchers have used to study factors that influence achievement in chemistry courses and persistence in a STEM major. The literature has proposed that the high attrition rate among STEM majors may result from the student’s evolving professional identity, motivational factors, and how they correlate a STEM career to their future aspirations. There is limited insight into how laboratory classes and teaching practices affect a student’s professional identity development. To investigate this, this study employed James Marcia’s identity development theory to understand the relationship between a student's identity status and their perception …

Simulation Of Pedestrian In Multifunctional Passageway Of Metro Station Area Based On Social Force Model, Wang Xi, Zhang Rui, Fei Shuo, Minghang Yang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Transitional passageway connecting subway stations and commercial facilities is generally designed as the multifunctional passageway, in which the traffic function is the main and the service function is the auxiliary. The impact of the service facilities on both sides of the passage on pedestrian traffic is difficult to be quantitatively analyzed and simulated and modeled. Through measurement, it is found that the viscous effect of service facilities on pedestrian traffic is mainly slowing down the speed or changing the trajectory direction. Through analyzing the horizontal influence range of service facilities, dividing the passage into different areas, and introducing the …

Kernel Block Diagonal Representation Subspace Clustering And Its Convergence Analysis, Maoshan Liu, Zhicheng Ji, Wang Yan, Jianfeng Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Focus on the problems that the linear block diagonal representation subspace clustering cannot effectively handle non-linear visual data, and the regular regularizers cannot directly pursue the k-block diagonal matrix, a kernel block diagonal representation subspace clustering is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the original input space is mapped into the kernel Hilbert space which is linearly separable, and the spectral clustering is performed in the feature space. The convergence analysis is given, and the strong convex of variables and the boundedness of function is utilized to verify the monotonically decreasing of objective function and the boundedness and convergence of …
Research On Flexible Job-Shop Dynamic Scheduling Based On Game Theory, Yichen You, Wang Yan, Zhicheng Ji
Research On Flexible Job-Shop Dynamic Scheduling Based On Game Theory, Yichen You, Wang Yan, Zhicheng Ji
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To quickly and effectively respond to the machine fault disturbance events in Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP), a flexible job-shop dynamic scheduling based on game theory is established. A pre-scheduling scheme is generated under Non-Dominated Sort Genetic Algorithm-Ⅱ (NSGA-Ⅱ) algorithm which introduces self-adapted crossover operators to improve the population diversity. For FJSP dynamic scheduling with machine fault, a multi-stage complete information game model is built to better balance the stability and robustness indicators and respond quickly to the machine fault, in which the stability and robustness indicators are mapped to the game players, and a hybrid Nash Equilibrium which …
System Performance Evaluation Method Based On Multi-Source Prior Data, Haozhe Liu, Li Wei, Ma Ping, Yang Ming
System Performance Evaluation Method Based On Multi-Source Prior Data, Haozhe Liu, Li Wei, Ma Ping, Yang Ming
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: When using the Bayes method to evaluate the performance of the system with multi-source prior data, the multi-source prior data is fused, the posterior distribution is calculated by synthesizing the fused prior distribution and test data. The parameters of posterior distribution are estimated to obtain the performance evaluation results. A weighted fusion method of multi-source prior data based on Kullback-Leibler divergence is proposed, which can effectively integrate the multi-source prior data. The commonly used Markov Chain Monte Carlo method is used to estimate the parameters of Bayes posterior distribution. The influence of different proposal distributions on the sampling results …
Experimental Observation Of Polarization-Resolved Nonlinear Thomson Scattering Of Elliptically Polarized Light, Colton Fruhling, Junzhi Wang, Donald Umstadter, Christoph Schulzke, Mahonri Romero, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross
Experimental Observation Of Polarization-Resolved Nonlinear Thomson Scattering Of Elliptically Polarized Light, Colton Fruhling, Junzhi Wang, Donald Umstadter, Christoph Schulzke, Mahonri Romero, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We report experimental results from a study of nonlinear Thomson scattering of elliptically polarized light. Polarization-resolved radiation patterns of the scattered light are measured as a function of the elliptical polarization state of the incident laser light. The relativistic electron trajectory in intense elliptically polarized fields leads to the formation of unique radiated polarization states, which are observed by our measurements and predicted by a theoretical model. The polarization of Thomson scattered light depends strongly on the intensity of the incident light due to nonlinearity. The results are relevant to high-field electrodynamics and to research and development of light sources …
