Investigations Into The Genetics Of Mixed Pathologies In Dementia, Adam Dugan
Investigations Into The Genetics Of Mixed Pathologies In Dementia, Adam Dugan
Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that leads to a loss of memory and thinking skills. While tremendous progress has been made in our understanding of the genetics underlying AD, currently known genetic variants explain only approximately 30% of the heritable risk of developing AD. One hurdle to AD research is that it can only be definitively diagnosed at autopsy, making cruder, clinic-based diagnoses more common. In recent years, several brain pathologies that mimic AD’s clinical presentation have been identified including brain arteriolosclerosis, hippocampal sclerosis (HS), and, most recently, limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE). It has become …

Cayley Map Embeddings Of Complete Graphs, Miriam Scheinblum
Cayley Map Embeddings Of Complete Graphs, Miriam Scheinblum
Honors Program Theses
This paper looks at Cayley map embeddings of complete graphs on orientable surfaces. Cayley maps constrain graph embeddings to those with cyclical edge rotations, so optimal embeddings on surfaces with the minimum genus may not always be possible. We explore instances when Cayley maps succeed at optimally embedding complete graphs, and when optimal embeddings are not possible, we determine how close to optimal they can get by finding vertex rotations that result in the smallest possible genus. Many of the complete graphs we consider have prime numbers of vertices, so for each complete graph Kn we focus on mappings with …

Dynamic Manipulation Of Droplets Using Mechanically Tunable Microtextured Chemical Gradients, Ali J. Mazaltarim, John J. Bowen, Jay M. Taylor, Stephen Morin
Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications
Materials and strategies applicable to the dynamic transport of microdroplets are relevant to surface fluidics, self-cleaning materials, thermal management systems, and analytical devices. Techniques based on electrowetting, topographic micropatterns, and thermal/chemical gradients have advanced considerably, but dynamic microdroplet transport remains a challenge. This manuscript reports the fabrication of mechano-tunable, microtextured chemical gradients on elastomer films and their use in controlled microdroplet transport. Specifically, discreet mechanical deformations of these films enabled dynamic tuning of the microtextures and thus transport along surface-chemical gradients. The interplay between the driving force of the chemical gradient and the microtopography was characterized, facilitating accurate prediction of …

Ecosystem transformation involves the emergence of persistent ecological or social–ecological systems that diverge, dramatically and irreversibly, from prior ecosystem structure and function. Such transformations are occurring at increasing rates across the planet in response to changes in climate, land use, and other factors. Consequently, a dynamic view of ecosystem processes that accommodates rapid, irreversible change will be critical for effectively conserving fish, wildlife, and other natural resources, and maintaining ecosystem services. However, managing ecosystems toward states with novel structure and function is an inherently unpredictable and difficult task. Managers navigating ecosystem transformation can benefit from considering broader objectives, beyond a …

Ecology Of An Isolated Muskrat Population During Regional Population Declines, Laken S. Ganoe, Matthew J. Lovallo, Justin D. Brown, W. David Walter
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Evidence indicating a decline in Ondatra zibethicus (Muskrat) populations in the United States during the past 40 years has led to speculation regarding factors influencing Muskrat survival. In order to understand population dynamics and survival, it is important to first define the ecology of local populations. We investigated the dwelling structure use, movements, home range, and survival of radio-tagged Muskrats (n = 14) in an urban wetland complex in central Pennsylvania. We used locations collected from intensive radio-telemetry monitoring to determine number of lodging structures used, hourly movement, and size and percent area overlap of home ranges. Muskrats shared …

Focusing on three-pion states with maximal isospin π⁺π⁺π⁺, we present the first nonperturbative determination of an energy-dependent three-hadron scattering amplitude from first-principles QCD. The calculation combines finite-volume three-hadron energies, extracted using numerical lattice QCD, with a relativistic finite-volume formalism, required to interpret the results. To fully implement the latter, we also solve integral equations that relate an intermediate three-body K matrix to the physical three-hadron scattering amplitude. The resulting amplitude shows rich analytic structure and a complicated dependence on the two-pion invariant masses, represented here via Dalitz-like plots of the scattering rate.

We report numerical simulations of a trapped elastic vortex driven by a strong ac magnetic field H(t)=Hsinωt parallel to the surface of a superconducting film. The surface resistance and the power dissipated by an oscillating vortex perpendicular to the film surface were calculated as functions of H and ω for different spatial distributions, densities, and strengths of pinning centers, including bulk pinning, surface pinning, and cluster pinning. Our simulations were performed for both the Bardeen-Stephen viscous vortex drag and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) drag coefficient η(v) decreasing with the vortex velocity v. The local residual surface resistance Ri(H) …

Consistency Checks For Two-Body Finite-Volume Matrix Elements: Conserved Currents And Bound States, Raúl A. Briceño, Christopher J. Monahan

We present a model-independent framework to determine finite-volume corrections of matrix elements of spatially separated current-current operators. We define these matrix elements in terms of Compton-like amplitudes, i.e., amplitudes coupling single-particle states via two current insertions. We show that the infrared behavior of these matrix elements is dominated by the single-particle pole, which is approximated by the elastic form factors of the lowest-lying hadron. Therefore, given lattice data on the relevant elastic form factors, the finite-volume effects can be estimated nonperturbatively and without recourse to effective field theories. For illustration purposes, we investigate the implications of the proposed formalism for …

Quasimonochromatic x rays are difficult to produce above 100 keV, but have a number of uses in x-ray and nuclear science, particularly in the analysis of transuranic species. Inverse Compton scattering (ICS) is capable of fulfilling this need, producing photon beams with properties and energies well beyond the limits of typical synchrotron radiation facilities. We present the design and predicted output of such an ICS source at CBETA, a multiturn energy-recovery linac with a top energy of 150 MeV, which we anticipate producing x rays with energies above 400 keV and a collimated flux greater than 108 photons per second …
