Lstm-Based Model For Human Brain Decisions Using Eeg Signals Analysis, Lorela Bano Jan 2021

Lstm-Based Model For Human Brain Decisions Using Eeg Signals Analysis, Lorela Bano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As machine learning models become more sophisticated, and biometric data becomes more readily available through new non-invasive technologies, it becomes increasingly possible to gain access to interesting biometric data that could revolutionize Human Computer Interaction. In this research, we propose a framework to assess and quantify human preference (like or dislike) on presenting various external visual stimuli. Our framework relies on an Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based model and on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals analysis to predict Like or Dislike preference of human subjects when presented with various marketing images.

Arnold Transformations As Applied To Data Encryption, Haley N. Anderson Jan 2021

Arnold Transformations As Applied To Data Encryption, Haley N. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As our world becomes increasingly digital, data security becomes key. Data must be encrypted such that it can be easily encrypted only by the intended recipient. Arnold Transformations are a useful tool in this because of its unpredictable periodicity. Our goal is to outline a method for choosing an Arnold Transformation that is both secure and easy to implement. We find the necessary and sufficient condition that a key matrix has periodicity. The chosen key matrix has a random structure, and it has a periodicity that is sufficiently high. We apply this method to several image and data string examples …

Climate Change Impacts On Wind Energy Generation In Ireland, Eadaoin Doddy Clarke, Conor Sweeney, Frank Mcdermott, Seánie Griffin, Joao Monteiro Correia, Paul Nolan, Laura Cooke

Articles

An ensemble of high-resolution regional climate model simulation data is used to examine the impacts of climate change on offshore and onshore wind energy genera- tion in Ireland. Two Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios (RCP 4.5 and 8.5) are analysed for the mid-term (2041–2060) and the long-term (2081–2100) future. Wind energy is projected to decrease (≤2%) overall in future climate scenarios. Changes are evident by mid-century and are more pronounced by late 21st century, particularly for RCP 8.5 offshore. Seasonally, wind energy is projected to decrease by less than 6% in summer and to increase slightly in winter (up to …

On The Distribution Of Central Values Of Hecke L-Functions, Daniel White Jan 2021

On The Distribution Of Central Values Of Hecke L-Functions, Daniel White

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Questions regarding the behavior of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line 1/2 + it can be naturally interpreted as questions regarding the family of L-functions over Q associated to the archimedian characters ψ (k) = k -it at the center point 1/2. There are many families of characters besides those strictly of archimedean-type, especially as one expands their scope to proper finite extensions of Q. Consideration of these Hecke characters leads immediately to analogous questions concerning their associated L-functions.

Using tools from p-adic analysis which are analogues of traditional archimedean techniques, we prove the q-aspect analogue …

Exploration Of The Use Of Palladium And Nickel To Catalyze Enolate Cross-Coupling And The Enantioselective Mizoroki-Heck Reaction., Mary Elizabeth Sexton (Charlton) Jan 2021

Exploration Of The Use Of Palladium And Nickel To Catalyze Enolate Cross-Coupling And The Enantioselective Mizoroki-Heck Reaction., Mary Elizabeth Sexton (Charlton)

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

Palladium catalysis is a common synthetic tool utilized by organic chemists to create carbon-carbon bonds. We utilized palladium to catalyze the γ-arylation of α, β-unsaturated ketones, and esters. This work expands on palladium-catalyzed α-arylation chemistry and extends it to the vinylogous variation at the γ-position. We report the regioselective synthesis of mono-γ-arylated 7-methoxy-4-methylcoumarin. We also report efforts towards applying our reaction conditions to other α,β-unsaturated ketones and esters to expand the scope of our reaction conditions.

In addition, we utilized palladium to catalyze the enantioselective asymmetric intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck reaction to produce potentially bioactive phenanthridinone analogs. We achieve this through the …

Early Detection Of Lung Cancer - A Challenge, Fatma Taher, Neema Prakash, Ashraf Alzaabi Jan 2021

Early Detection Of Lung Cancer - A Challenge, Fatma Taher, Neema Prakash, Ashraf Alzaabi

All Works

Lung cancer or lung carcinoma, is a common and serious type of cancer caused by rapid cell growth in tissues of the lung. Lung cancer detection at its earlier stage is very difficult because of the structure of the cell alignment which makes it very challenging. Computed tomography (CT) scan is used to detect the presence of cancer and its spread. Visual analysis of CT scan can lead to late treatment of cancer; therefore, different steps of image processing can be used to solve this issue. A comprehensive framework is used for the classification of pulmonary nodules by combining appearance …

Santschi, Chen Xu, Kai Ziervogel, Manoj Kamalanathan, Wei-Chun Chin, Adrian B. Burd, Andrew Wozniak, Patrick G. Hatcher

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Microbes (bacteria, phytoplankton) in the ocean are responsible for the copious production of exopolymeric substances (EPS) that include transparent exopolymeric particles. These materials act as a matrix to form marine snow. After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, marine oil snow (MOS) formed in massive quantities and influenced the fate and transport of oil in the ocean. The processes and pathways of MOS formation require further elucidation to be better understood, in particular we need to better understand how dispersants affect aggregation and degradation of oil. Toward that end, recent work has characterized EPS as a function of microbial community and …

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The U.S. Pacific coast population of the western snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus nivosus; plover) has declined due to loss and degradation of coastal habitats, predation, and anthropogenic disturbance. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed the subspecies in 1993 as threatened under the Endangered Species Act due to the population declines and habitat loss. Predation of nests and chicks has been identified as an important cause of historic population declines, and thus, most predator management actions for this subspecies are focused on reducing this pressure. In recent years, common ravens (Corvus corax; ravens) have become the most …

Breeding And Feeding Habitat Selection By An Island Endemic Bird May Increase Its Vulnerability To Climate Change [Dataset], Paul Radley, Eddie Van Etten, David Blake, Robert Davis Jan 2021

Breeding And Feeding Habitat Selection By An Island Endemic Bird May Increase Its Vulnerability To Climate Change [Dataset], Paul Radley, Eddie Van Etten, David Blake, Robert Davis

Research Datasets

Characterising patterns of habitat use is an important first step for effective conservation planning. Species restricted to low-lying islands are at greatest risk from climate change-related sea level rise, and requirements for breeding and foraging habitat may determine their risk from tidal inundation. The endangered Micronesian Scrubfowl (Megapodius laperouse senex) is a model species for understanding these impacts. This species faces the cumulative challenges of tourist visitation, invasive species, and rising sea levels, yet little is understood about its habitat use in the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon Conservation Area (RISL) of Palau. We studied the habitat requirements of …

A Speciation Modeling Study Of Heavy Metal Adsorption To Plastic In Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Units, Kaitlyn Hague

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Microplastics are an emerging concern due to their harmful effect to organisms and their ability to facilitate transport of contaminants including heavy metals. Microplastics can enter the environment through wastewater treatment plants, landfill leachate, and littering. Once in the environment microplastics can be distributed throughout rivers, the ocean, and lakes. In order to understand the adsorption of heavy metals to microplastics a geochemical modeling study was completed using Visual Minteq. Lab tests were completed to better understand what constituents are available in wastewater at four different locations: influent, clarifiers, digesters, and effluent. These constituents were then used to observe how …

Maidrl: Semi-Centralized Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Using Agent Influence, Anthony Lee Harris Jan 2021

Maidrl: Semi-Centralized Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Using Agent Influence, Anthony Lee Harris

MSU Graduate Theses

In recent years, reinforcement learning algorithms, a subset of machine learning that focuses on solving problems through trial-and-error learning, have been used in the field of multi-agent systems to help the agents with interactions and cooperation on a variety of tasks. Given the enormous success of reinforcement learning in single-agent systems like Chess, Shogi, and Go, it is natural for the next step to be the expansion into multi-agent systems. However, controlling multiple agents simultaneously is extremely challenging, as the complexity increases tremendously with the number of agents in the system. Existing approaches in this regard use a wide range …

Evaluating The Improvement In Dna Fingerprinting, Dani Dray Jan 2021

Evaluating The Improvement In Dna Fingerprinting, Dani Dray

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

DNA fingerprinting is a forensic technique used to create patterns that are unique to a person’s DNA. Previously, these fingerprints were made from 13 different segments of DNA, but today they are made from the 20 ones. The fundamental principle of counting is used to determine how much of an improvement was made after adding the 7 additional DNA segments. It is found that this addition greatly reduces the likelihood of two people having the same exact fingerprint, therefore improving the accuracy and reliability of DNA fingerprinting.

Predicting The Cost Of Dental Care Using A Probability Model, Nadine Wehbe Jan 2021

Predicting The Cost Of Dental Care Using A Probability Model, Nadine Wehbe

This paper uses survey data to present a probability model that allows dental offices to predict patient costs. The quantitative model is useful for developing and accepting capitation rates. It accounts for whether the care is initial care or maintenance care, the type of dental care (such as operative, prosthetics, or periodontics), and different age groups, all of which affect the cost of dental treatment.

Calculating The Probability Of Constitutional Isomers Of Pentane, Mary-Margaret Dare Jan 2021

Calculating The Probability Of Constitutional Isomers Of Pentane, Mary-Margaret Dare

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Depending on the reagent, and orientation of collisions within a chemical reaction, organic molecules can be present as different constitutional isomers of the same molecule. We can analyze the likelihood of getting a mixture of pentane with certain conformers. Based on this, we find that there are 16 potential conformers, but 13 are identical structures, meaning only three are distinct from each other. Using the product rule, we then demonstrate how to go about calculating the probability of specific conformers, including specific identical structures, being present in a mixture, and then we demonstrate that process is strictly within the three …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Two Station Starburst Pseudorotaxane, Janaka Prasad Kaviraj Kavikarage Jan 2021

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Two Station Starburst Pseudorotaxane, Janaka Prasad Kaviraj Kavikarage

Masters Theses

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) are arranged with mechanical bonds. These molecules cannot be separated without breaking the required covalent bonds. There are different kinds of MIMs, such as rotaxanes, catenanes, suitanes, borromean rings, and molecular knots. These MIMs are stabilized by non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds, π-π stacking, and ion-dipole interactions. Dialkylammonium ions, bis(pyridinium)ethane dications, viologen species, and naphthalene diimide π-deficient groups are typical examples of recognition motifs for crown ethers.

In the research described here, we synthesized a new axle, based on a combination of benzobis(imidazolium) (BBI) and viologen species. The axle contains two recognition sites: one is …

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland Jan 2021

Cheeger Constants Of Two Related Hyperbolic Riemann Surfaces, Ronald E. Hoagland

Masters Theses

This thesis concerns the study of the Cheeger constant of two related hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. The first surface R is formed by taking the quotient U2/Γ(4), where U2 is the upper half-plane model of the hyperbolic plane and Γ(4) is a congruence subgroup of PSL2(Z), an isometry group of U2 . This quotient is shown to form a Riemann surface which is constructed by gluing sides of a fundamental domain for Γ(4) together according to certain specified side pairings. To form the related Riemann surface R' , we follow a similar procedure, this time taking the …

Photoluminescence Properties Of Novel Iii-V Semiconductor Systems, Shumithira Gandan Jan 2021

Photoluminescence Properties Of Novel Iii-V Semiconductor Systems, Shumithira Gandan

Theses

Perturbation of the inherent radiation equilibrium in solids by an external energy could engender an emission of the superfluous energy as electromagnetic radiation, or luminescence. Photoluminescence methods precipitate this disintegration of radiation equilibrium often by supplying the external energy as photons with energies higher than the bandgap energy of the solid. Since the excitation energy momentarily transforms the medium before luminescence is emitted, photoluminescence experiments are able to produce diverse and intricate spectroscopic data detailing the optical properties of the solid as a measure of this transformation. The pliability of allowed electron states in semiconductors have instigated bourgeoning research in …
