Development Of Tripodal And Bipodal Ligand Frameworks And First-Row Transition Metal Reagents For Selective C-N Bond Construction Methodologies, Anshika Kalra
Doctoral Dissertations
"We present a family of anionic Mn(II) reagents supported by trisphenylamido- amlne frameworks that offer guidance with regards to ligand selection for developing C—N bond construction methodologies (extensively used in the synthesis of petrochemicals, household chemicals) through nitrene- transfer chemistry. We subsequently extend the study to include the corresponding Fe(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) reagents, to gain insights in their comparative reactivity/selectivity patterns. Attenuated levels of electrophilicity of anionic complexes proved to be more suitable for discriminating aromatic from aliphatic olefins for aziridination purposes, especially for Mn(II) complexes. However, in the case of Co(II) reagents, we observe that additional stereoelectronic parameters …
Analysis Of The Primary Volatile Compositions In The Oort Cloud And Jupiter-Family Comets Towards The Goal Of Understanding Their Origin And Diversity, Mohammad Saki
Doctoral Dissertations
“Knowledge of the initial conditions present in the early solar nebula is required to understand the evolution and its current volatile content. Comets were some of the first objects to accrete in the solar nebula. They are among the most pristine (primitive) remnants of the solar system formation, and their present-day volatile composition likely reflects the composition and conditions where (and when) they formed. Therefore, they are fossils of the solar system formation. High-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy is a valuable tool for sampling the parent volatile (i.e., ices subliming directly from the nucleus) composition of comets via analysis of fluorescence emission …
Spatial Variations Of Teleseismic P-Wave Attenuation And Scattering Beneath The Southeastern United States And The Malawi And Luangwa Rift Zones In East Africa, Ashutosh Shrivastava
Spatial Variations Of Teleseismic P-Wave Attenuation And Scattering Beneath The Southeastern United States And The Malawi And Luangwa Rift Zones In East Africa, Ashutosh Shrivastava
Doctoral Dissertations
"Seismic attenuation is an important physical parameter for characterizing subsurface morphology and the thermal structure of the Earth’s crust and mantle. In this study, teleseismic P-wave amplitude spectra are used to examine the seismic attenuation beneath the southeastern United States and the Malawi and Luangwa rift zones in east African. The resulting seismic attenuation parameters (Δt*) reveal a systematic contrast between the Appalachian Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain exhibiting high and low attenuation, respectively. Spatial coherency analysis of the Δt* observations suggests that the center of the low-attenuation layer is located within the uppermost mantle at about …
Computational Studies Of Carbon Nanocluster Solidification, Chathuri Chandani Silva
Computational Studies Of Carbon Nanocluster Solidification, Chathuri Chandani Silva
Doctoral Dissertations
“A subset of micron-size meteoritic carbon particles formed in red giant atmospheres show a core-rim structure, likely condensed from a vapor phase into super-cooled carbon droplets that nucleated graphene sheets (~40Å) on randomly oriented 5-atom loops during solidification, followed by coating with a graphite rim. Similar particles form during slow cooling of carbon vapor in the lab.
Here we investigate the nucleation and growth of carbon rings and graphene sheets using density functional theory (DFT). Our objectives: (1). explore different computational techniques in DFT-VASP for various carbon structures and compare the results with literature, (2). investigate the nucleation and growth …
Count Data Time Series Models And Their Applications, Yi Zhang
Count Data Time Series Models And Their Applications, Yi Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
“Due to fast developments of advanced sensors, count data sets have become ubiquitous in many fields. Modeling and forecasting such time series have generated great interest. Modeling can shed light on the behavior of the count series and to see how they are related to other factors such as the environmental conditions under which the data are generated. In this research, three approaches to modeling such count data are proposed.
First, a periodic autoregressive conditional Poisson (PACP) model is proposed as a natural generalization of the autoregressive conditional Poisson (ACP) model. By allowing for cyclical variations in the parameters of …
Semi-Empirical Modeling Of Liquid Carbon's Containerless Solidification, Philip C. Chrostoski
Semi-Empirical Modeling Of Liquid Carbon's Containerless Solidification, Philip C. Chrostoski
Doctoral Dissertations
“Elemental carbon has important structural diversity, ranging from nanotubes through graphite to diamond. Previous studies of micron-size core/rim carbon spheres extracted from primitive meteorites suggest they formed around such stars via the solidification of condensed carbon-vapor droplets, followed by gas-to-solid carbon coating to form the graphite rims. Similar core/rim particles result from the slow cooling of carbon vapor in the lab. The long-range carbon bond-order potential was used to computationally study liquid-like carbon in (1.8 g/cm3) periodic boundary (tiled-cube supercell) and containerless (isolated cluster) settings. Relaxations via conjugate-gradient and simulated-annealing nucleation and growth simulations using molecular dynamics were …

Development Of High-Performance Hydrogels, Buddhabhushan Salunkhe
Doctoral Dissertations
Here, we present a systematic approach to design robust hydrogel compositions. The goal was to achieve excellent properties to open up new opportunities in especially two challenging applications not previously well-served by hydrogels.
The first part of this research will discuss the systematic screening of polymers for their hydrothermal stability under brine, acidic, neutral, and basic pH conditions followed by novel designs of hydrogel compositions. Certain hydrogel compositions withstand temperatures of up to 150 °C for more than 24 months in high salinity brines. This novel hydrogel composition fills a technology gap between the existing polyacrylamide-based preformed particle gels (PPGs) …

Designing Transition Metal Chalcogenides Electrocatalyst Surfaces For High-Efficiency Water Oxidation, Umanga De Silva
Doctoral Dissertations
”The rising demand for energy security and reducing fossil fuel dependence has prompted researchers to search for a clean, sustainable, and efficient energy generation system with low environmental impact. Water electrolysis has been identified as one of the most important processes satisfying the above needs to generate hydrogen as a clean fuel. Two half-cell reactions of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode comprise the main process of water electrolysis. However, the oxygen evolution reaction is the most crucial step for efficient water splitting. Traditionally, metal oxides have been utilized as catalysts …

Coastal restoration projects to mitigate environmental impacts have increased global demand for sand resources. Unfortunately, these resources are often extracted from sand/shell banks on the inner continental shelf, resulting in significant alteration or loss of low-relief reefs in coastal oceans. Experimental reefs (oyster shell, limestone rubble, composite) were deployed in the western Gulf of Mexico to assess their potential value as nurseries for newly settled reef fishes. Occurrence, abundance, and species richness of juvenile fishes were significantly higher on all three types of low-relief reefs compared with unconsolidated sediment. Moreover, reefs served as nursery habitat for a range of reef …

Establishing Independent Tunability Of The Mechanical And Transport Properties Of Polymer Gels, Lucas Rankin
Establishing Independent Tunability Of The Mechanical And Transport Properties Of Polymer Gels, Lucas Rankin
Master’s Theses
Polymer gels can be used in the fabrication of materials for filtering liquid and gaseous media, solid-state electrolytes, and transdermal medical patches. This diverse range of applications primarily relies on the transport and mechanical properties of polymer gels. Both sets of properties have shown excellent tunability, but typically in a coupled fashion. Establishing the independent tunability of the transport and mechanical properties of polymer gels (using simple, cost-effective methods) is paramount if polymer gels are to be used to their full potential. Specifically, block copolymer gels self-assemble into organized nanoscale networks within the gel solvent, which allows for facile control …
