Experimental Investigation And Modeling Of The Response Surface Methodology For The Optimization Of A Multiloop Heat Pipe, Dar-Sun Liou Sep 2021

Experimental Investigation And Modeling Of The Response Surface Methodology For The Optimization Of A Multiloop Heat Pipe, Dar-Sun Liou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Considering thermohydrodynamic instabilities in the design of cooling systems has become a trend, which has led to the evolution of thermal management. However, such instabilities, which cause flow perturbations, are difficult to explain by using physical theories. The aim of this study was to use a parameter-based modeling technique, namely the response surface methodology (RSM), to characterize the dynamics of multiloop heat pipes (MLHPs) under various heat loads. The RSM, which is based on statistics, was used to determine the relationship between the design parameters and thermal responses of MLHPs, which are represented using polynomials. Th aim of our RSM …

Supply Chain Inventory Model With Markov Chain Demand, Zhi-Ping Lin, Su-Ping Ho Sep 2021

Supply Chain Inventory Model With Markov Chain Demand, Zhi-Ping Lin, Su-Ping Ho

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

This study aims to develop a new one-vendor multiple-buyers integrated inventory model. We believe that our proposed model can forecast the demand of all buyers in the coming future by using data that have already existed and to minimize the total cost-for both buyers and vendors. In recent days, the Markov chain approach has played one of the critical methods of demand forecasting in the Supply Chain Management (SCM) field. The proposed model of this study is to analysis the demand of all buyers in one specific season that was impacted by the demand in the same season from last …

Fire Resistance Of Steel Connectors Of Precast Lightweight Concrete Walls, Jen-Hao Chi, Maochieh Chi, Yue-Lin Huang Sep 2021

Fire Resistance Of Steel Connectors Of Precast Lightweight Concrete Walls, Jen-Hao Chi, Maochieh Chi, Yue-Lin Huang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In this study the fire test was performed to investigate the mechanic behaviors and failure patterns of precast normal weight concrete (NWC) and lightweight concrete (LWC) walls with three types of commonly used steel connectors, namely dry (61), wet (81), and bearing (56E) connectors. For the LWC wall specimens, on lateral application of tension, the cracking load values of the dry, wet, and bearing-type connectors were 95.1%, 86.3%, and 83.0%, respectively, of the original loads, and their ultimate load values were 81.6%, 90.7%, and 85.0%, respectively, of the original. In the shearing test after the fire resistance test, the cracking …

Differential Evolution Algorithm For Ship Path Planning In Open Waters, Yu-Tao Kang, Wei-Jiong Chen, Jin-Hui Wang Sep 2021

Differential Evolution Algorithm For Ship Path Planning In Open Waters, Yu-Tao Kang, Wei-Jiong Chen, Jin-Hui Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

A general approach to the derivation of simple yet accurate formulas for identifying bandpass nonlinear channels in or-thogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed in this paper. The OFDM is an widely adopted tech-nique for wideband communication applications. An OFDM signal could be highly vulnerable to nonlinearities in a com-munication link. This makes proper estimation of the nonlin-ear channel essential for an OFDM system. A nonlinear bandpass communication channel is commonly described by a complex Voletrra series, in which the task of nonlinear channel identification is to determine the Volterra kernels. This task can become very difficult when the order …

Integrated Simulation Of Virtual Prototypes And Control Algorithms Of Unmanned Surface Vehicles Based On A Robot Operating System, Hye-Won Lee, Joo-Hyun Woo, Myung-Il Roh, Seung-Ho Ham, Luman Zhao, Sol Ha, Nak-Wan Kim, Chan-Woo Yu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) require autonomous software with a high level of liberalization and automation to complete various missions. Therefore, experimental verification and validation of this software at the initial design stage are essential. However, such experiments are impossible before the actual hardware is developed, and the creation of an external environment for the mission requires substantial cost and time. In this study, virtual prototypes of the mission environment and hardware for the USV are developed. Then, a simulation environment for testing the control algorithms in the autonomous software is constructed. Data communication with the USV hardware is necessary for …

Bite Depth Penetration Patterns Of Dairy Cows Foraging On Complex Swards, W. M. Griffiths, J. Hodgson, G. C. Arnold Sep 2021

Bite Depth Penetration Patterns Of Dairy Cows Foraging On Complex Swards, W. M. Griffiths, J. Hodgson, G. C. Arnold

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Sward height was the dominant cue used by dairy cattle to determine the depth of penetration on young vegetative swards. On more complex swards, bite depth penetration was controlled by variations in the depth of regrowth. Evidence showed that cattle grazed to the pseudostem:lamina interface, but sward height exerted a stronger effect on bite depth than pseudostem height. Modelling efforts to predict how the herbivore places bites in space in the vertical dimension across sward states are currently being restricted by the absence of detailed canopy structure descriptions. We argue that the contrast between strata is an important determinant of …

The Effect Of Progressive Grazing Of A Pasture On The Spatial Distribution Of Herbage Mass And Utilization By Cattle, Masahiko Hirata, S. Ogura Sep 2021

The Effect Of Progressive Grazing Of A Pasture On The Spatial Distribution Of Herbage Mass And Utilization By Cattle, Masahiko Hirata, S. Ogura

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

To develop an understanding of the spatially heterogeneous grazing of a pasture by large herbivores under progressive grazing, the herbage mass, herbage consumption and ingestive behavior by cattle were monitored daily at ninety-one 50 × 50 cm permanent locations in a bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flügge) pasture during a 6-day grazing period. With the progress of grazing, the mean pre-grazing herbage mass over the locations decreased. Responding to this, the mean number of visits and the mean rate of biting increased, and the mean residence time and the mean rate of defoliation decreased. The pre-grazing herbage mass became more heterogeneous, …

Nitrogen Response Efficiencies From Grazed Dairy Pastures Under Dry Conditions, Frank R. Mckenzie, Joseph L. Jacobs Sep 2021

Nitrogen Response Efficiencies From Grazed Dairy Pastures Under Dry Conditions, Frank R. Mckenzie, Joseph L. Jacobs

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Experiments were conducted within a long-term nitrogen (N) fertiliser experiment under grazing. The objective was to examine N response efficiencies (kg dry matter (DM)/kg N) and herbage crude protein (CP) content to fertiliser N applied under dry soil conditions (gravimetric soil moisture content of 17% at 10cm; soil field capacity = 38% and wilting point = 11%) during autumn (April 1999) and late spring (November 1999) in southeastern Australia. Visually, N treated plots were greener in colour than control (no N) plots. No differences were recorded in primary or residual DM yields, N response efficiencies, and pasture growth rates between …

Human Or Robot?: Investigating Voice, Appearance And Gesture Motion Realism Of Conversational Social Agents, Ylva Ferstl, Sean Thomas, Cédric Guiard, Cathy Ennis, Rachel Mcdonnell

Conference papers

Research on creation of virtual humans enables increasing automatization of their behavior, including synthesis of verbal and nonverbal behavior. As the achievable realism of different aspects of agent design evolves asynchronously, it is important to understand if and how divergence in realism between behavioral channels can elicit negative user responses. Specifically, in this work, we investigate the question of whether autonomous virtual agents relying on synthetic text-to-speech voices should portray a corresponding level of realism in the non-verbal channels of motion and visual appearance, or if, alternatively, the best available realism of each channel should be used. In two perceptual …
