Detecting Malicious Dns Queries Over Encrypted Tunnels Using Statistical Analysis And Bi-Directional Recurrent Neural Networks, Mohammad Al-Fawa'reh, Zain Ashi, Mousa Tayseer Jafar

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

The exponential rise in the number of malicious threats targeting computer networks and digital services puts network infrastructure in jeopardy. Domain name protocol attacks are one of the most pervasive network attacks posing a threat to networks, whereby attackers send harmful information to the network; this type of threat is identified as DNS tunneling. The DNS protocol has recently gained increased attention from cyber-attackers, targeting organizations with a web presence or reliance on e-commerce businesses. Cyber-attackers can subtly exploit the contents of encrypted DNS packets that are sent across covert network tunnels, which are difficult for firewalls and blacklist detection …

Artificial Intelligence For Para Rubber Identification Combining Five Machine Learning Methods, Chairote Yaiprasert Ph.D. Dec 2021

Artificial Intelligence For Para Rubber Identification Combining Five Machine Learning Methods, Chairote Yaiprasert Ph.D.

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

This study aims to identify Para rubber species using a combination of five machine learning techniques to classify leaf images. The learning process is defined using a dataset for each classification method. Approximately 1,472 leaf images are prepared consisting of various sizes, shapes, quality provided for the model. The classification indicators are defined with the help of an algorithm to identify at least three of the top five potential classification outcomes. The algorithm accurately predicts 100% of the five classification methods. Methods can provide precise and rapid classification of large quantities, without the need for image preprocessing prior to classification.

Synergistic Extraction Of Silver From Nitric Acid Medium With Dithizone In The Presence Of A Secondary Amine- Amberlite La-2 Using 110mag-Radioisotope, Madhusudan Mandal Ph.D. Dec 2021

Synergistic Extraction Of Silver From Nitric Acid Medium With Dithizone In The Presence Of A Secondary Amine- Amberlite La-2 Using 110mag-Radioisotope, Madhusudan Mandal Ph.D.

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Synergistic extraction of silver has been investigated in the presence of two different kinds of extractants, one of which is a chelating ligand, dithizone and the other is a long-chain secondary amine amberlite LA-2 at pH 3.0 using a radiotracer technique. The apparent formation constant, overall equilibrium constant and adduct formation constants were calculated from distribution coefficients. Interestingly, it was observed that the adduct formation constant is too high when the ligand concentration is increased by keeping the amine concentration fixed at 0.044 M compared to that obtained when the ligand concentration is kept fixed at 8.74×10-4 M.

Pranayama Breathing Detection With Deep Learning, Bikash Shrestha

Theses

Yoga, a complementary health approach, according to a 2017 National Health Interview Survey by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a choice of around 14.3% adults in the US. Kapalbhati pranayama, a yoga practice of alternating fast exhales and longer passive inhales, is understood to improve our health. Incorrect and irregular practices, however, can cause injuries and adverse effects. To avoid these undesired effects, it is essential to maintain a pace fit for the practitioner. In the absence of any tools to observe a pace of practice, this work develops a deep learning method that listens to …

Zeros Of A Two-Parameter Family Of Harmonic Trinomials, David Work Dec 2021

Zeros Of A Two-Parameter Family Of Harmonic Trinomials, David Work

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis studies complex harmonic polynomials of the form $f(z) = az^n + b\bar{z}^k+z$ where $n, k \in \mathbb{Z}$ with $n > k$ and $a, b > 0$. We show that the sum of the orders of the zeros of such functions is $n$ and investigate the locations of the zeros, including whether the zeros are in the sense-preserving or sense-reversing region and a set of conditions under which zeros have the same modulus. We also show that the number of zeros ranges from $n$ to $n+2k+2$ as long as certain criteria are met.

Computing Agent Competency In First Order Markov Processes, Xuan Cao Dec 2021

Computing Agent Competency In First Order Markov Processes, Xuan Cao

Theses and Dissertations

Artificial agents are usually designed to achieve specific goals. An agent's competency can be defined as its ability to accomplish its goals under different conditions. This thesis restricts attention to a specific type of goal, namely reaching a desired state without exceeding a tolerance threshold of undesirable events in a first-order Markov process. For such goals, the state-dependent competency for an agent can be defined as the probability of reaching the desired state without exceeding the threshold and within a time limit given an initial state. The thesis further defines total competency as the set of state-dependent competency relationships over …

Effects Of Anharmonicity In A Dual-Sagnac Interferometer, Stephen Thomas Dec 2021

Effects Of Anharmonicity In A Dual-Sagnac Interferometer, Stephen Thomas

Honors College Theses

A recent experiment implemented a dual Sagnac atom interferometer (AI) for rotation sensing using a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a TOP-trap potential. The BEC is split twice by laser light to create two pairs of counter-orbiting clouds in a lowest-order harmonic potential with each pair acting as a separate Sagnac interferometer. After one orbit the two overlapping cloud pairs are split again and the interference patterns are inferred from the population of atoms in the zero-momentum state. We have simulated the impact of the presence of anharmonic terms in the potential on the performance of the AI as measured …

Optimal Container Migration For Mobile Edge Computing: Algorithm, System Design And Implementation, Taewoon Kim, Motassem Al-Tarazi, Jenn-Wei Lin, Wooyeol Choi Dec 2021

Optimal Container Migration For Mobile Edge Computing: Algorithm, System Design And Implementation, Taewoon Kim, Motassem Al-Tarazi, Jenn-Wei Lin, Wooyeol Choi

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Edge computing is a promising alternative to cloud computing for offloading computationally heavy tasks from resource-constrained mobile user devices. Placed at the edge of the network, edge computing is particularly advantageous to delay-limited applications for having a short distance to end- users. However, when a mobile user moves away from the service coverage of the associated edge server, the advantage gradually vanishes, increasing response time. Although service migration has been studied to address this problem focusing on minimizing the service downtime, both zero-downtime and the amount of traffic generated as a result of migration need further study. In this paper, …

A Modular Strategy For Expanding Electron-Sink Capacity In Noncanonical Cluster Assemblies, Yume Mai, Alexandria K. Balzen, Rebecca K. Torren, Michael P. Callahan, Adam C. Colson

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

A modular synthetic strategy is described whereby organometallic complexes exhibiting considerable electron-sink capacity may be assembled by using only a few simple molecular components. The Fe2(PPh2)2(CO)5 fragment was selected as a common electroactive component and was assembled around aromatic cores bearing one, two, or three isocyanide functional groups, with the resultant complexes possessing electron-sink capacities of two, four, and six electrons, respectively. The latter complex is noteworthy in that its electron-sink capacity was found to rival that of large multinuclear clusters (e.g., [Ni32C6(CO)36]6– and [Ni38 …

Metal Release From A Biomedical Cocrmo Alloy In Mixed Protein Solutions Under Static And Sliding Conditions: Effects Of Protein Aggregation And Metal Precipitation, Zheng Wei, Valentine Romanovski, Luimar Filho, Cecilia Persson, Yolanda S. Hedberg

Chemistry Publications

Biomedical materials made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys are commonly used in artificial prostheses and dental implants, which are exposed to friction and load. The release of Co, Cr, and Mo from these surfaces is governed by physical and chemical processes. The extent of measured metal release from biomedical CoCrMo alloys into mixed protein solutions may be influenced by protein aggregation and metal precipitation effects. Metal release from, and the surface composition of, a CoCrMo alloy was investigated in physiological relevant solutions (phosphate buffered saline, PBS, with varying concentrations of fibrinogen from bovine plasma and/or bovine serum albumin) at pH 7.3 …

Potential Of Crop Rotation Using Forages In The Tropics, P. L. Mafongoya

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Soil fertility is a fundamental biophysical root cause of food insecurity sub-Saharan Africa. Low quality crop residues and grasses during the dry season also limit animal productivity. Forage legumes (herbaceous and tree legumes) have great potential to increase crop animal productivity. Technologies have been developed over the past 3 decades to fully integrate forage legumes into farming. Most of these technologies are still on shelves with low adoption by farmers. Rhe role of forage legumes in nutrient cycling is reviewed in this paper. The factor limiting adoption will also be discussed. Innovative dissemination pathways to increase adoption will be suggested.

Physics - All Scholarship

Infection of human cells by pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, typically proceeds by cell surface binding to a crucial receptor. The primary receptor for SARS-CoV-2 is the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), yet new studies reveal the importance of additional extracellular co-receptors that mediate binding and host cell invasion by SARS-CoV-2. Vimentin is an intermediate filament protein that is increasingly recognized as being present on the extracellular surface of a subset of cell types, where it can bind to and facilitate pathogens’ cellular uptake. Biophysical and cell infection studies are done to determine whether vimentin might bind SARS-CoV-2 and facilitate its uptake. Dynamic …

Alternative Cropping Systems With Self Reseeding Annual Legumes In A Mediterranean Environment, E. Campiglia, F. Caporali, R. Mancinelli

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Self-reseeding winter annual legumes (subclover and snail medic) have the potential to induce a significant shift towards a less energy-intensive and more environmentally friendly management in the modern and specialized cereal cropping systems. Nevertheless their use is practically unknown in mixed stands with winter cereals, where they can contribute to supply nitrogen and to reduce herbicides input. We conceived an alternative cropping system where an annual legume performs, respectively, as living mulch in a winter cereal (winter wheat), as a cover crop after reseeding and as dry mulch for the succeeding summer cereal (corn). Trials carried out at the Tuscia …

Integration Of Cattle And Improved Pastures Under Coconuts In Southern Luzon, Philippines, F. A. Moog, H. E. Diesta, A. G. Deocareza

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Results of two studies involving 1) grazing of Signalgrass (Brachiaria decumbens) pastures at different stocking and 2) cut-and-carry forages in smallholder farms for cattle under coconuts are presented. Grazing at 3 AU/ha and 2 AU/ha gave significantly higher LWG/ha (P 0.05) over 1 AU/ha but highest financial return was obtained from 2 AU/ha. Productivity of cattle on cut-and-carry forages in small farms varies among farmers with better animal performance directly related to quantity and quality of feeds offered and industriousness of individual farmers. Both studies showed the benefits derived from integration of cattle with improved pastures under coconuts.
