Main-Stem Seepage And Base-Flow Recession Time Constants In The Niobrara National Scenic River Basin, Nebraska, 2016–18, Kellan R. Strauch, Philip J. Soeksen

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

The Niobrara River of northern Nebraska is a valuable water resource that sustains irrigated agriculture and recreation, as well as a diverse ecosystem. Large-quantity withdrawals from the source aquifer system have the potential to reduce the flow into the river and to adversely affect the free-flowing condition of the Niobrara National Scenic River (NSR). Therefore, to understand the magnitude and characteristics of those flows, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Park Service, began a study to quantify seepage gains/losses along the eastern half of the Niobrara NSR and to create a map characterizing the base-flow …

A Deep Neural Network For Early Detection And Prediction Of Chronic Kidney Disease, Vijendra Singh, Vijayan K. Asari, Rajkumar Rajasekaran Jan 2022

A Deep Neural Network For Early Detection And Prediction Of Chronic Kidney Disease, Vijendra Singh, Vijayan K. Asari, Rajkumar Rajasekaran

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Diabetes and high blood pressure are the primary causes of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) and kidney damage markers are used by researchers around the world to identify CKD as a condition that leads to reduced renal function over time. A person with CKD has a higher chance of dying young. Doctors face a difficult task in diagnosing the different diseases linked to CKD at an early stage in order to prevent the disease. This research presents a novel deep learning model for the early detection and prediction of CKD. This research objectives to create a deep …

Deep Extragalactic Visible Legacy Survey: Data Release 1 Blended Spectra Search For Candidate Strong Gravitational Lenses, Benne Holwerda, S Knabel, J E. Thorne, S Bellstedt, M Siudek, L J M Davies Jan 2022

Deep Extragalactic Visible Legacy Survey: Data Release 1 Blended Spectra Search For Candidate Strong Gravitational Lenses, Benne Holwerda, S Knabel, J E. Thorne, S Bellstedt, M Siudek, L J M Davies

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Here, we present a catalogue of blended spectra in Data Release 1 of the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Of the 23 197 spectra, 181 showed signs of a blend of redshifts and spectral templates. We examine these blends in detail for signs of either a candidate strong lensing galaxy or a useful overlapping galaxy pair. One of the three DEVILS target fields, COSMOS (D10), is close to complete and it is fully imaged with Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys, and we visually examine the 57 blended spectra in this field in the …

Hadamard’S Variational Formula In Terms Of Stress And Strain Tensors, Björn Gustafsson, Ahmed Sebbar Jan 2022

Hadamard’S Variational Formula In Terms Of Stress And Strain Tensors, Björn Gustafsson, Ahmed Sebbar

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Starting from a Lagrangian action functional for two scalar fields we construct, by variational methods, the Laplacian Green function for a bounded domain and an appropriate stress tensor. By a further variation, imposed by a given vector field, we arrive at an interior version of the Hadamard variational formula, previously considered by P. Garabedian. It gives the variation of the Green function in terms of a pairing between the stress tensor and a strain tensor in the interior of the domain, this contrasting the classical Hadamard formula which is expressed as a pure boundary variation.

Isolated Objects And Their Evolution: A Derivation Of The Propagator’S Path Integral For Spinless Elementary Particles, Domenico Napoletani, Daniele Carlo Struppa Jan 2022

Isolated Objects And Their Evolution: A Derivation Of The Propagator’S Path Integral For Spinless Elementary Particles, Domenico Napoletani, Daniele Carlo Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We formalize the notion of isolated objects (units), and we build a consistent theory to describe their evolution and interaction. We further introduce a notion of indistinguishability of distinct spacetime paths of a unit, for which the evolution of the state variables of the unit is the same, and a generalization of the equivalence principle based on indistinguishability. Under a time reversal condition on the whole set of indistinguishable paths of a unit, we show that the quantization of motion of spinless elementary particles in a general potential field can be derived in this framework, in the limiting …

Map Based Www Tool For Recommending Forage Species, M. H. Hall, D. A. Miller, J. H. Cherney Jan 2022

Map Based Www Tool For Recommending Forage Species, M. H. Hall, D. A. Miller, J. H. Cherney

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Selecting the “best” forage species or species mixture requires a knowledge and understanding of the consuming animal, soil characteristics, and forage species. The multivariate nature of the problem presents challenges to those interested in solving the practical problem of maximizing available resources. Earlier work at Cornell University resulted in a WWW-based interface that allowed the user to provide a soil type or zip code and additional management factors to initiate the species selection. This approach relies on either user knowledge of soil series or an implied relationship between zip code and soil series that may often be wrong. To improve …

Remote Sensing Application To Grassland Monitoring, Z. B. Nan Jan 2022

Remote Sensing Application To Grassland Monitoring, Z. B. Nan

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Application of remote sensing to the management of grassland resources, the role this plays in developing sustainable grassland farming systems and opportunities for further development are outlined. Use of remote sensing technologies in grassland monitoring has a history of more than 30 years. Both fine- and coarse-grained remote sensing techniques are used to monitor and study grasslands. Fine-grained techniques are used to study landscape scale processes through the use of sensors providing spatial resolution of a few meters, whereas coarse-grained techniques are used to study catchment scale areas, and even entire biomes, using satellite-based sensors with a spatial resolution of …

Modelling Grassland Ecosystems, J. H. M. Thornley Jan 2022

Modelling Grassland Ecosystems, J. H. M. Thornley

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

In this contribution a view of the promise and difficulties of modelling grassland is given. This is largely centred around work with a grassland ecosystem simulator known as the Hurley Pasture Model.

A brief introduction sets forth possible reasons for building a large ecosystem model, and stresses the importance of modelling objectives. It is suggested that a model is de rigeur for any research programme which aims to take a firm grasp of the complex responses of grassland. Mechanistic models are required to provide the understanding needed for intelligent and flexible management of grassland, whatever the prevailing environmental or economic …

Estimating Herbage Mass In Stargrass (Cynodon Nlenfuensis Var Nlenfuensis) Using Sward Surface Height And The Rising Plate Meter, D. E. Oliveira, S. R. Medeiros, L. J. M. Aroeira, L. G. Barioni, D. P. D. Lanna Jan 2022

Estimating Herbage Mass In Stargrass (Cynodon Nlenfuensis Var Nlenfuensis) Using Sward Surface Height And The Rising Plate Meter, D. E. Oliveira, S. R. Medeiros, L. J. M. Aroeira, L. G. Barioni, D. P. D. Lanna

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Estimation of herbage mass is necessary both in research and farm management. Methods for such estimations should be inexpensive, rapid and reliable. Since estimations through hand clipping are time consuming, a range of indirect methods have been developed and tested in the literature. This study had the aim of comparing precision of two indirect methods, sward surface height (SSH) and the rising plate meter (RPM), to estimate herbage mass in stargrass pastures (Cynodon nlenfuensis var. nlenfuensis). Pre-grazing measurements of SSH and RPM readings were taken and compared with the paddock herbage mass. RPM readings were converted into centimeters. Average …

Tropical Cyclones Negatively Impact The Tourism Economy In Coastal Regions, Sergio Alvarez, Arthur Huang Jan 2022

Tropical Cyclones Negatively Impact The Tourism Economy In Coastal Regions, Sergio Alvarez, Arthur Huang

Rosen Research Review

Tropical cyclones can have a devastating effect on communities, causing loss of property, businesses, and life. In areas that rely on tourism, these effects can be long-lasting. In their recent work, Dr. Sergio Alvarez and Dr. Arthur Huang from UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management have examined the impact that tropical cyclones have on the tourism economy in Florida. The results suggest that these cyclones negatively impact the economy, especially in coastal regions, and that policy changes are needed to help the tourism sector recover
