Optical Signal Processing With Discrete-Space Metamaterials, Mohammad Moein Moeini Jan 2022

Optical Signal Processing With Discrete-Space Metamaterials, Mohammad Moein Moeini

Wayne State University Dissertations

As digital circuits are approaching the limits of Moore’s law, a great deal of efforthas been directed to alternative computing approaches. Among them, the old concept of optical signal processing (OSP) has attracted attention, revisited in the light of metamaterials and nano-photonics. This approach has been successful in realizing basic mathematical operations, such as derivatives and integrals, but it is difficult to be applied to more complex ones. Inspired by digital filters, we propose a radically new OSP approach, able to realize arbitrary mathematical operations over a nano-photonic platform. We demonstrate this concept for the case of spatial differentiation, image …

Jointly-Learnt Networks For Future Action Anticipation Via Self-Knowledge Distillation And Cycle Consistency, Md Moniruzzaman, Zhaozheng Yin, Zhihai He, Ming-Chuan Leu, Ruwen Qin Jan 2022

Jointly-Learnt Networks For Future Action Anticipation Via Self-Knowledge Distillation And Cycle Consistency, Md Moniruzzaman, Zhaozheng Yin, Zhihai He, Ming-Chuan Leu, Ruwen Qin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Future action anticipation aims to infer future actions from the observation of a small set of past video frames. In this paper, we propose a novel Jointly learnt Action Anticipation Network (J-AAN) via Self-Knowledge Distillation (Self-KD) and cycle consistency for future action anticipation. In contrast to the current state-of-the-art methods which anticipate the future actions either directly or recursively, our proposed J-AAN anticipates the future actions jointly in both direct and recursive ways. However, when dealing with future action anticipation, one important challenge to address is the future's uncertainty since multiple action sequences may come from or be followed by …

Snorkel Surveys Of The Sauk And Skagit Rivers With Natural Systems Design, Zach Williams Jan 2022

Snorkel Surveys Of The Sauk And Skagit Rivers With Natural Systems Design, Zach Williams

College of the Environment Internship Reports

This study was conducted in the Skagit River Basin to observe what types of side-channel habitat best support juvenile Chinook and other salmon species (Lowery et al.). The Skagit and Sauk-Suiattle river basins have a total of six independent spawning populations of Chinook Salmon. Chinook salmon have three distinct life histories represented by stream type (subyearling parr and yearling), and ocean type (fry) present within the Skagit River System. Differentiating life stage is used by the 45mm threshold, fish being <= 45mm parr being fry while fish > 45 mm being subyearling and yearling. Scale, otolith, observational and genetic data suggest the presence of three distinct life histories …

Spectroscopy Lab Assistant, Drew Robinson Jan 2022

Spectroscopy Lab Assistant, Drew Robinson

College of the Environment Internship Reports

Raman spectroscopy is a technique that allows for chemical characterization of various materials. On a microscope stage, the sample is set in place and irradiated via a laser. Much of the light produced by the laser is scattered off the sample, unchanged by the sample that it hit. This phenomenon is known as Rayleigh scattering. A small percentage of scattered light is changed because of the chemical makeup of the sample and is reflected at a different wavelength than the laser. This is called Raman scattering and is the key to analyzing what the sample is made of at a …

Whatcom Conservation District - Edge Of Field Monitor Internship, John Porco Jan 2022

Whatcom Conservation District - Edge Of Field Monitor Internship, John Porco

College of the Environment Internship Reports

The district assists local landowners in improving their land use methods to benefit the natural environment of Whatcom County. One of the major resources the district is working to protect is water quality. There are many sources of water pollution in Whatcom County, but agriculture is the one that the district works with. Dairy production in particular is a major potential source of nutrient, fecal coliform, and sediment contamination. Pollutants that enter the Nooksack River pollute the bays the river drains into, which yields significant adverse effects such as those on shellfish harvest. The internship role included helping the district …

Usfs Fire Crew Internship, Adriano De Olivera Jan 2022

Usfs Fire Crew Internship, Adriano De Olivera

College of the Environment Internship Reports

Wildfire has been an integral part of Western ecosystems for millennia. Lightning has and still does start most wildfires here in Washington. This sort of disturbance regime is natural, and important to resetting the biological stagnation of our ecosystems. When disturbances occur in a natural, infrequent matter, it promotes competition and biologic diversity within an ecosystem (Urban In Prep). Creatures and plants have evolved against this selective pressure, but things have changed. During the 20th century, the USFS ramped up its wildfire suppression efforts in response to an increase in activity due to the heavy logging during this era,

Gonatives! Research Internship, Miles Hyland Jan 2022

Gonatives! Research Internship, Miles Hyland

College of the Environment Internship Reports

This project focused on the relationship between soil biota, such as mycorrhizal fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms, and the success of native plants grown in landscaped settings. In particular, we hoped to obtain data which might describe the mycorrhizal associations formed by target species, as well as their growth response to the introduction of native soil biota. This work will improve our understanding of how to grow certain plants, such as sea thrift (A.
maritima), that have proven difficult to maintain in native plant gardens and nurseries. My roles within this project were wide ranging, and included responsibilities such as …

Noaa Wdvcc Fisheries Internship, Antonio Jones

College of the Environment Internship Reports

The invasive European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas) have spread from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, becoming a matter of concern in waterbodies throughout the Salish Sea. The possible establishment and growth of this invasive species poses risks to the native species, that thousands of people rely on for their livelihood and for the seafood industry in the Pacific Northwest. I completed and internship with the Northwest Straits Commission (NWSC) working in an emergency response trapping effort to trap invasive European Green Crabs (EGC) in Drayton Harbor, WA to help protect and conserve the native species from their devastating …

Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Internship, Nathan Fisher Jan 2022

Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Internship, Nathan Fisher

College of the Environment Internship Reports

the goal of this voluntary initiative was to ensure that the natural resources of Lake
Whatcom, Lake Samish and other important bodies of water in the Bellingham area are preserved and
protected. In 2011 the Asian Clam (Corbicula fluminea) was detected for the first time in Lake Whatcom,
sparking concern for some about future invasions. Aquatic Invasive species are non-native pathogens,
animals, and plants whose habitat is primarily the aquatic environment. Effects of the invaders can be
ranging. In extreme cases pathogens can be introduced to bodies of water frequented by swimmers. When
these pathogens come into contact with victims, …

Surficial Geologic Map Of The Upton 7.5-Minute Quadrangle, Kentucky, Meredith Swallom, Matthew Massey, Maxwell L. Hammond Iii, Antonia Bottoms, Ann Hislop, Michele M. Mchugh

Contract Reports--KGS

The Upton 7.5-minute quadrangle is located south of Elizabethtown along the boundaries between Hardin, Hart, and Larue Counties and within the Mississippian Plateau physiographic region (McDowell, 1986). Topography is characterized by the low relief Pennyroyal plain that sits at altitudes below about 750 ft above sea level, the ridges, spurs, and isolated knobs of the intensely dissected Dripping Springs escarpment; the low relief cap of the escarpment landforms is part of the Mammoth Cave plateau region. Moore (1972) mapped the bedrock geology of the quadrangle, which was later digitized by Toth (2006). Mississippian bedrock is exposed throughout most of the …
