Review Of Methods For Ecological Research On Terrestrial Small Mammals, By Robert Mccleery, Lynda R. Lafond
Review Of Methods For Ecological Research On Terrestrial Small Mammals, By Robert Mccleery, Lynda R. Lafond
The Prairie Naturalist
Small mammals are used in ecological studies throughout the world, yet the subject has lacked a clear reference that included upto- date methods pertaining to passive detection, molecular, and statistical approaches. In Methods for Ecological Research on Terrestrial Small Mammals, McCleery and his coauthors build on previous research references (Braun 2005, Sutherland 2006, Krebs 2014, Silvy 2020) and present methodologies specific to the study of small mammals that are applicable globally. Written as an asset for novice and experienced small mammal researchers alike, Methods for Ecological Research on Terrestrial Small Mammals is organized in a logical format, providing readers …
Review Of Loon Lessons: Uncommon Encounters With The Great Northern Diver, By James D. Paruk, Kristin Bianchini
Review Of Loon Lessons: Uncommon Encounters With The Great Northern Diver, By James D. Paruk, Kristin Bianchini
The Prairie Naturalist
Gavia immer Brunnich (Common Loon) is a bird that has captivated bird watchers, wildlife enthusiasts, campers, cottagers, and others interested in the natural world for centuries. The loon also features prominently in Native American mythology. For many, the loon symbolizes the wildness of the north, and it is often used as a sentinel of lake health. Indeed, the Common Loon has inspired a wealth of literature, both scientific and popular, describing this species’ ecology, behavior, and fitness in the face of environmental changes. To this literature, Loon Lessons: Uncommon Encounters with the Great Northern Diver adds a complete and accurate …
Review Of Spiders Of North America, By Sarah Rose, Michael L. Draney
Review Of Spiders Of North America, By Sarah Rose, Michael L. Draney
The Prairie Naturalist
A field guide to spiders, the dominant terrestrial predator group, has long been a desire for North American naturalists, biologists, and spider fans, but not surprisingly, the first “real” field guide has been a long time coming. The diversity of spiders, with over 50,000 known species globally (World Spider Catalog 2022) and around 4,000 in North America north of Mexico (Rose 2022), is well beyond the diversity of more traditional field guide targets such as birds (about 1,000 species north of Mexico; American Birding Association 2022) or butterflies (about 725 species north of Mexico; North American Butterfly Association 2022). Also, …

Second Twenty-Five Year Index: Volumes 26–50, 1994–2018, Jane E. Austin
The Prairie Naturalist
The first 50 years of the Prairie Naturalist reside on the shelves of libraries and personal collections. The articles and notes published over those years provide invaluable knowledge about Great Plains biota, communities, conservation, and landscape ecologies. Awareness of the wealth of information in those 50 print volumes has been limited, relying on references from other published papers or the limited number of articles that have been made available online by authors. This index serves as resource for individuals to digitally tap into the information published since 1994. This index, together with the first 25-year index, serves to complement the …
Design And Analysis Of Marangoni-Driven Robotic Surfers, Mitchel L. Timm
Design And Analysis Of Marangoni-Driven Robotic Surfers, Mitchel L. Timm
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
We designed and experimentally studied the dynamics of two robotic systems that surf along the water-air interface. The robots were self-propelled by means of creating and maintaining a surface tension gradient resulting from an asymmetric release of isopropyl alcohol (IPA). The imbalance in the distribution of surface tension surrounding the robots generates a propulsive force commonly referred to as Marangoni propulsion. First, we considered a single surfer, which was custom-made with novel control mechanisms that allow for both forward motion and steering to be remotely adjusted solely through the manipulation of local surface stresses. We analyzed the performance of this …
Collective Hydrodynamics Of Robotic Fish, Rohit S. Pandhare
Collective Hydrodynamics Of Robotic Fish, Rohit S. Pandhare
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Many animals in nature travel in groups either for protection, survival, or endurance. Among these, fish do so under the burden of hydrodynamic loads, which incites questions as to the significance of the multi-body fluid-mediated interactions that facilitate collective swimming. We study such interactions in the idealized setting of a rotational array of robotic fish whose tails undergo a prescribed flapping motion, but whose swimming speed is determined as a natural result of the hydrodynamic effects. Specifically, we examine how the measured collective speed of the swimmers varies with the imposed frequency and amplitude of their tail flapping, and with …
Drivers And Seasonal Variability Of Redox-Sensitive Metal Chemistry In A Shallow Subterranean Estuary, Alison E. O'Connor, Elizabeth A. Canuel, Aaron J. Beck
Drivers And Seasonal Variability Of Redox-Sensitive Metal Chemistry In A Shallow Subterranean Estuary, Alison E. O'Connor, Elizabeth A. Canuel, Aaron J. Beck
VIMS Articles
The subterranean estuary (STE) has been historically defined in terms of the mixing of saline and fresh water, in an analogy to surface estuaries. However, redox gradients are also a defining characteristic of the STE and influence its role as a source or sink for metals in the environment. Approaching the STE from a redox-focused biogeochemical perspective (e.g., considering the role of microbial respiration and availability of organic matter) provides the ability to quantify drivers of metal transport across spatial and temporal scales. This study measured the groundwater composition of a shallow STE over 2 years and used multiple linear …
Dynamical Controls Of The Eastward Transport Of Overwintering Calanus Finmarchicus From The Lofoten Basin To The Continental Slope, Huizi Dong, Meng Zhou, Walker O. Smith Jr., Et Al
Dynamical Controls Of The Eastward Transport Of Overwintering Calanus Finmarchicus From The Lofoten Basin To The Continental Slope, Huizi Dong, Meng Zhou, Walker O. Smith Jr., Et Al
VIMS Articles
Diapausing populations of Calanus finmarchicus at depth in the Lofoten Basin (LB) return to the continental shelf and slope off the Lofoten-Vesterålen Islands during the phytoplankton spring bloom to feed and spawn, forming surface swarms with a great abundance. To study how overwintering populations of C. finmarchicus move with the deep currents and return to the shelf, Lagrangian transport characteristics of particles in deep water between 2008 and 2019 were analyzed using Global Ocean Reanalysis and Simulation re-analysis data and Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs). Our analyses revealed that persistent eastward transport of diapausing C. finmarchicus between LB and continental slope …
A Study Of The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Integrated Mathematics Ii Ohio State Test Scores, Jessica L. Banas
A Study Of The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Integrated Mathematics Ii Ohio State Test Scores, Jessica L. Banas
Master of Science in Mathematics
The COVID-19 pandemic took hold of our world and affected nearly every aspect of our lives. It was especially impactful to adolescents, who were already experiencing major stressors and changes in their lives without the added effects of the pandemic. Instead of worrying about who they are going to go to prom with or sitting with at lunch, students may have struggled to help with childcare, how their learning will be delivered to them the following week, or the effects of little to no social interactions. Consistent stressors can lead adolescents to develop dysfunctional neurobehaviour or simply fall into the …
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Age On Mathematics Outcomes Of In-Person And Online Learning, Stephanie L. Spencer
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Age On Mathematics Outcomes Of In-Person And Online Learning, Stephanie L. Spencer
Master of Science in Mathematics
The coronavirus pandemic created a unique situation where a rural school district in western Ohio gave students a choice to attend school in-person with face-to-face teachers or take courses online through an asynchronous online platform. The state mathematics grade level and end-of-course test scores were taken by both groups of students in the spring of 2021. An analysis of the state grade level test scores for grades 3-8 revealed significant predictors of instructional mode, socioeconomic status, and gender. Taking courses online predicted a lower score by 23 points, the socioeconomically disadvantaged scored 20 points lower, and females were behind by …
Community Colleges & Athletics: Academic Success Of Student-Athletes, Courtney Calkins
Community Colleges & Athletics: Academic Success Of Student-Athletes, Courtney Calkins
Master of Science in Mathematics
This research examines the relationship between community colleges and athletics. There is little research done on the interaction between athletes, on-campus housing, and community colleges. Studies show that the more students are involved in the college, the more likely they are to stay at the school they are at and succeed academically. Little research is done at community colleges because they often lack athletics or housing, but there is a growth in the number of athletic teams in the junior college system as well as the number of schools that provide housing for their students. This research is to help …
Predicting Academic Success From Involvement In Athletic Extracurricular Activities, Fine-Arts Extracurricular Activities, Or Both Extracurricular Activities, Matthew Garman
Master of Science in Mathematics
Public education at all levels has sustained a torrent of modulation in recent years, most notably due to the repercussions from the Covid-19 global pandemic. Schools are offering more remote/online options for students as well as utilizing hybrid curriculums taking advantage of the evermore widespread availability of technology and connectivity, even in our more rural school districts. The ramifications of these modifications to the traditional classroom setting are still unknown, and as such many areas of the public education system need to be closely monitored. One such area would be extracurricular opportunities for students, especially those opting for remote/hybrid curriculums. …
Predicting Success On The Nclex-Rn For Associate Degree Nursing Students From A Small Public University, Jeffery Dittenber
Predicting Success On The Nclex-Rn For Associate Degree Nursing Students From A Small Public University, Jeffery Dittenber
Master of Science in Mathematics
The success of an associate degree nursing program is often dichotomized into either passing or failing the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nursing (NCLEX-RN). Not only are individual students’ nursing future dependent on successfully navigating this examination, but the licensing and accreditation of nursing education programs are determined by maintaining consistent first-time pass rates of their graduates. This study will investigate academic and demographic factors to determine significant predictors of first-time pass on the NCLEX-RN for the associate degree in nursing program at Shawnee State University.
Are Sores On The Grit-S Questionnaire And Class Participation Significant Predictors Of Success In An Online College Mathematics Course?, Mikhail Mednik
Are Sores On The Grit-S Questionnaire And Class Participation Significant Predictors Of Success In An Online College Mathematics Course?, Mikhail Mednik
Master of Science in Mathematics
The Covid-19 pandemic significantly disrupted past norms in higher education. The immediate impact was felt worldwide, as an abrupt shift to remote learning made colleges more invested in online courses than ever before. Although not as evident, another significant change in higher education included a shift away from the use of traditional cognitive predictors (SAT and ACT scores) by colleges and universities, to admit prospective applicants. These trends escalate the need for faculty and administrators to identify non-cognitive predictors of achievement in online college courses, particularly in core subjects like mathematics. This study examined whether grit and participation are predictive …

The Influence Of Bilingualism On Mathematical Achievement: An Analysis Across Different Countries, Joshua Rodriguez
The Influence Of Bilingualism On Mathematical Achievement: An Analysis Across Different Countries, Joshua Rodriguez
Master of Science in Mathematics
The effects of bilingualism, socioeconomic status, parental education, parental income, and a child’s positive attitude on mathematical achievement have been quite disputed topics during the past decades. Using the foundations of Cummins’ threshold and developmental interdependence hypotheses, Coleman’s theory on social capital, Vygotsky’s theory on language, and the functional attitude theory, this study investigates if and how effectively these attributes predict mathematical achievement in fourth-grade students. Using the latest iteration of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, multiple regression models evaluate the consequences of multiple language use, individual social standing, and positive attitude effects on mathematical achievement with …

Postpandemic Outlook For Organized Criminal Activities: Agility Across The Physical, Social, And Cyber Spaces, Jim Jones, Anthony Stefanidis
Postpandemic Outlook For Organized Criminal Activities: Agility Across The Physical, Social, And Cyber Spaces, Jim Jones, Anthony Stefanidis
Arts & Sciences Book Chapters
The global COVID-19 pandemic and response affected every aspect of our society, including the activities of criminal organizations. In this chapter, we discuss several examples of criminal organization agility during the pandemic, drawn from the physical, social, and cyber domains. We assess that criminal organizations are emerging from the pandemic stronger than before, the pandemic presents a unique opportunity to study criminal organization agility, and criminal organizations are more exposed after their pandemic-driven adjustments. We also assess that this adjusted criminal activity and other factors, including risky operations that expose discoverable data, create investigative opportunities that will enable a deeper …
Computational Study Of Quorum Quenching Of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones By Ion Pairing To Cations, Ashen Anuradha Suduweli Kondage
Computational Study Of Quorum Quenching Of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactones By Ion Pairing To Cations, Ashen Anuradha Suduweli Kondage
Dissertations and Theses
Biofilms are the default state of microbial life and their formation on surfaces influences many processes. The coordinated behavior of microorganisms including their growth into biofilms occurs through a process termed quorum sensing during which they excrete specific signaling molecules called autoinducers. Recently it has been observed that Ag+ and Cu2+ ions interact with N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine autoinducers thereby inhibiting quorum sensing. Such inhibitors are called quorum quenchers. In this study, we have used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the ion pairing between select cations and short chained N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) type autoinducers that are used by gram negative bacteria. …
Ecological Changes Of The Lower Niobrara River Valley And Lewis And Clark Lake Delta From Past To Present, Madalyn Christine Bollig
Ecological Changes Of The Lower Niobrara River Valley And Lewis And Clark Lake Delta From Past To Present, Madalyn Christine Bollig
Dissertations and Theses
Over half of the world’s large river systems are impacted by dams. These may prevent sediment flow downstream, resulting in accumulation in the upstream reservoir. On the Missouri River, deltas and associated backwater-affected areas occur in nine locations across six reservoirs. One of these, the Lewis and Clark Lake delta-backwater, is influenced by sediment inputs from both the Missouri River and the Niobrara River. While the extension of the prograding delta into the reservoir has been well documented, there has been little research on upstream (backwater) effects of the delta on the lower Niobrara River. This study examined ecological changes …
Characterization Of Undoped Csi At Cryogenic Temperatures, Yongjin Yang
Characterization Of Undoped Csi At Cryogenic Temperatures, Yongjin Yang
Dissertations and Theses
Doped CSI (Cesium iodide) is wildly used in many detectors. Pure cesium iodide can only perform well at low temperature due to its luminous properties. Its luminous efficiency at low temperature is even better than that of impurity-containing cesium iodide. So we want to measure its properties at low temperatures. In chapter 3, we measure the light yield of the pure CSI, which is the important property as a detector. We also introduce our experimental equipment and methods. In chapter 4, the quenching factor represents the efficiency of energy deposition. This value is a key point for our future detection …
