Superfluid Spin Transistor, Edward Schwartz, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev
Superfluid Spin Transistor, Edward Schwartz, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev
Alexey Kovalev Papers
We propose to use the Hall response of topological defects, such as merons and antimerons, to spin currents in two-dimensional magnetic insulator with in-plane anisotropy for identification of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in a transistorlike geometry. Our numerical results relying on a combination of Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations show transition from spin superfluidity to conventional spin transport, accompanied by the universal jump of the spin stiffness and exponential growth of the transverse vorticity current. We propose a superfluid spin transistor in which the spin and vorticity currents are modulated by changes in density of free topological defects, e.g., …

Don’T Beep At Me: Using Google Maps Apis To Reduce Driving Anxiety, Daniel Chechelnitsky
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
Stress while driving is a significant issue that causes automobile incidents. Along with the physical injuries, there is often baggage and trauma associated with these accidents. Wearable health monitoring technology, like Smartwatches, has a real possibility to help people further understand the stress inducing processes of driving. Thus to help with this issue, I propose a Google Maps app extension called: "Don't Beep At Me". This project creates a map that is layered by heart rate instead of speed limit and has great potential to be useful for reducing driving anxiety.
A Comparison Of Stacking Methods To Estimate Survival Using Residual Lifetime Data From Prevalent Cohort Studies, Zhaoheng Li
A Comparison Of Stacking Methods To Estimate Survival Using Residual Lifetime Data From Prevalent Cohort Studies, Zhaoheng Li
Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
Prevalent cohort studies are widely used for their cost-efficiency and convenience. However, in such studies, only the residual lifetime can be observed. Traditionally, researchers rely on self-reported onset times to infer the underlying survival distribution, which may introduce additional bias that confounds downstream analysis. This study compares two stacking procedures and one mixture model approach that uses only residual lifetime data while leveraging the strengths of different estimators. Our simulation results show that the two stacked estimators outperform the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) and the mixture model, allowing robust and accurate estimations for underlying survival distributions.
Land Is Life: Settler Colonial Governance Of National Parks And Hunting In Taiwan, Wei-Chieh Jarita Chen
Land Is Life: Settler Colonial Governance Of National Parks And Hunting In Taiwan, Wei-Chieh Jarita Chen
Environmental Studies Honors Projects
This thesis situates Taiwan as a settler colonial state by examining the discourse around the governance of national parks and the criminalization of Indigenous hunting. Placed in the context of historical patterns of land dispossession and cultural genocide, these two issues represent the ongoing process of settler colonialism and the reproduction of settler colonial relations through environmentalism. I focus on the narratives around three case studies: the controversial and ultimately unsuccessful campaign for the Maqaw National Park, the Tumpu Daingaz buluo’s struggle with the Yushan National Park, and the Tama Talum Indigenous hunting constitutional reinterpretation case. I argue that settler …

“Abolition As Presence”: An East Bay Ca Case Study Of Black Food Geographies, Ayize James
Environmental Studies Honors Projects
Using abolitionist methodologies, the author argues that food activism contests “food deserts” by making food present in sources alternative to supermarkets. The project can be broken into two central inquiries: (1) How do race and class formations in the East Bay generate landscapes of food inaccess that are labeled “food deserts”? and (2) How does food activism in the East Bay generate lasting alternatives to supermarkets?, which is explored through three case studies of food justice organizing in the East Bay.

Seagrass meadows are important sinks of organic carbon (Corg), in particular the near-surface Corg pool (≤ 15 cm) compared to deeper sediments. Near-surface carbon is highly susceptible to disturbance and loss to the atmosphere, however, inadequate accounting for variability in this pool of carbon limits their uptake into carbon accounting frameworks. We therefore investigated the spatial variability in seagrass near-surface Corg and biomass Corg across different geomorphic (estuary, lagoonal and reef-associated) and community typologies (pioneer and persistent). Near-surface Corg stock in vegetated areas (25.78 Mg Corg ha−1 ± 26.64) was twice that …
