School of Public Service Faculty Publications

As coastal communities across the U.S. and worldwide undertake efforts to enhance their resilience to coastal hazards, they must do so while ensuring that all voices are heard, addressing and preventing disparate impacts, and, ultimately, increasing resilience in an equitable way. The Resilience Adaptation Feasibility Tool (RAFT) assists coastal communities in incorporating equity into resilience planning and implementation of projects to increase resilience. The RAFT includes social and economic dimensions in assessment of resilience and focuses on how localities can build resilience equitably. The RAFT process has three phases -- a scorecard assessment, development of a resilience action checklist that …

Spectral Variability In Naturally Weathered Rock Surfaces And Implications For Mars, Sabrina Curtis Jan 2022

Spectral Variability In Naturally Weathered Rock Surfaces And Implications For Mars, Sabrina Curtis

WWU Graduate School Collection

Rock weathering products are important clues for understanding past environmental conditions on Mars. They can be identified using reflectance spectroscopy because the formation of new minerals and textures on a rock surface will change its spectral signature. Previous studies demonstrate that the spectral signature of coated rock surfaces can vary with viewing geometry (the angle between incident and emitted light); however, these photometric effects have not been extensively characterized for naturally weathered rocks. My goal in this study is to quantify how both weathering and viewing geometry affect visible to near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance spectra of a subset of naturally weathered …

Loguad: Log Unsupervised Anomaly Detection Based On Word2vec, Jin Wang, Changqing Zhao, Shiming He, Yu Gu, Osama Alfarraj, Ahed Abugabah

All Works

System logs record detailed information about system operation and are important for analyzing the system's operational status and performance. Rapid and accurate detection of system anomalies is of great significance to ensure system stability. However, large-scale distributed systems are becoming more and more complex, and the number of system logs gradually increases, which brings challenges to analyze system logs. Some recent studies show that logs can be unstable due to the evolution of log statements and noise introduced by log collection and parsing. Moreover, deep learning-based detection methods take a long time to train models. Therefore, to reduce the computational …

Secure Storage Model For Digital Forensic Readiness, Avinash Singh, Richard Adeyemi Ikuesan, Hein Venter Jan 2022

Secure Storage Model For Digital Forensic Readiness, Avinash Singh, Richard Adeyemi Ikuesan, Hein Venter

All Works

Securing digital evidence is a key factor that contributes to evidence admissibility during digital forensic investigations, particularly in establishing the chain of custody of digital evidence. However, not enough is done to ensure that the environment and access to the evidence are secure. Attackers can go to extreme lengths to cover up their tracks, which is a serious concern to digital forensics – particularly digital forensic readiness. If an attacker gains access to the location where evidence is stored, they could easily alter the evidence (if not remove it altogether). Even though integrity checks can be performed to ensure that …

To this day, abstention rates continue to rise, largely due to the need to travel to vote. This is why remote e-voting will increase the turnout by allowing everyone to vote without the need to travel. It will also minimize the risks and obtain results in a faster way compared to a traditional vote with paper ballots. In fact, given the high stakes of an election, a remote e-voting solution must meet the highest standards of security, reliability, and transparency to gain the trust of citizens. In literature, several remote e-voting solutions based on blockchain technology have been proposed. Indeed, …

Mathematical Analysis Of The Van Der Waals Equation, Emil Prodanov Jan 2022

Mathematical Analysis Of The Van Der Waals Equation, Emil Prodanov

Articles

The parametric cubic van der Waals polynomial $p V^3 - (R T + b p) V^2 + a V - a b$ is analysed mathematically and some new generic features (theoretically, for any substance) are revealed: the temperature range for applicability of the van der Waals equation, $T > a/(4Rb)$, and the isolation intervals, at any given temperature between $a/(4Rb)$ and the critical temperature $8a/(27Rb)$, of the three volumes on the isobar--isotherm: $3b/2 < V_A \le 3b$, $ 2b < V_B < 4b/(3 - \sqrt{5})$, and $3b < V_C < b + RT/p$. The unstable states of the van der Waals model have also been generically localized: they lie in an interval within the isolation interval of $V_B$. In the case of unique intersection point of an isotherm with an isobar, the isolation interval of this unique volume is also determined. A discussion on finding the volumes $V_{A, B, C}$, on the premise of Maxwell's hypothesis, is also presented.

Ghgs From Bmps: Examining The Factors That Mediate Soilborne Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Agricultural Best Management Practices, Sarah Brickman

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Agricultural best management practices (BMPs) promote soil health and achieve multiple positive environmental outcomes. However, practices that are intended to solve one environmental challenge may have unintended climate impacts, therefore presenting a potential tradeoff. For example, manure injection is a BMP that can reduce runoff and nitrogen loss as ammonia gas (NH3) but can increase N2O and CO2 emissions compared to manure broadcast application. This thesis explores how CO2 and N2O emissions from manure injection compare to other soil fertility practices as well as the conditions that may enhance or reduce these greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. First, during a two-year …

Single Valued Neutrosophic (M; N)-Ideals Of Ordered Semirings, Saba Al-Kaseasbeh, Madeline Al Tahan, Bijan Davvaz, Mariam Hariri

All Works

The aim of this paper is to combine the innovative concept of single valued neutrosophic sets and ordered semirings. It studies ordered semirings by the properties of their single valued neutrosphic subsets. In this regard, we define single valued neutrosophic (m; n)-ideals (SVN-(m; n)-ideals) of ordered semirings. First, we illustrate our new definition by non-trivial examples. Second, we study these SVN-(m; n)-ideals under different operations of SVNS. Finally, we find a relationship between the (m; n)-ideals of ordered semirings and level sets by finding a necessary and sufficient condition for an SVNS of an ordered semiring R to be an …
