Polymers remain a prominent component of our lives, and finding methods to control their structure or morphology are needed to tune material properties. This dissertation reports methods to alter the conformation, morphology, or structure of polymeric materials. Chapter two describes the impact of exposure to white light during annealing of conjugated polymer blends on their morphology and optoelectronic performance. The observed changes in the morphology correlate strongly to the variation in photoluminescence (PL) with illumination, including that the PL varies less with illumination at higher Poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] loadings, offering foundational understanding to guide the structure and optoelectronic performance of conjugated polymer …

On Earth, volcanic activity with elevated sulfur (S) degassing in the presence of water leads to the formation of hydrothermal deposits enriched in S-bearing minerals. Similar processes may have been an important source of S on Mars. The landing sites of Gusev crater and Meridiani Planum investigated by the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, respectively, showed elevated SO42- [sulfate] concentrations, suggesting high- and low-temperature aqueous processes. An efficient neutron detection system with good energy resolution is needed to correctly characterize the decays of neutron-rich nuclei where beta-delayed neutron emission is a dominant decay mode. Precision neutron spectroscopy probes nuclear structure effects in neutron-rich nuclei and is essential to exploit the opportunities in new-generation radioactive beam facilities. The Southern Iberian Shear Zone (SISZ) is a Variscan-aged suture representing the closure of a small ocean basin during the Carboniferous. The SISZ is bounded on either side by the well-studied, relatively homogeneous Beja-Acebuches Metabasites (BAM) and the complex and heterogeneous accretionary metasedimentary rocks of the Pulo do Lobo (PdL). The SISZ underwent a combination of shortening and lateral shearing known as transpression. Despite a very well-developed tectonic foliation, kinematic interpretation in the PdL is made difficult by a lack of easily identifiable lineations. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in lakes across elevation gradients is a complex function of topography, climate, vegetation coverage, land use, and lake properties. To examine sources and processing of DOM from sea level to mountain lakes (3–1,574 m), we measured dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) optical properties, lake characteristics, and water quality parameters in 62 freshwater lakes in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Higher elevation lakes had lower DOC concentrations and absorbance. This research applies machine learning methods to build predictive models of Net Load Imbalance for the Resource Sufficiency Flexible Ramping Requirement in the Western Energy Imbalance Market. Bridgeport Ethanol LLC is Nebraska’s first ethanol plant to be under contract for Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) in the state. Despite ongoing safety concerns by federal regulators and organized opposition from affected landowners, Carbon America is pushing forward with their plans to have the Bridgeport CCS facility operational by 2024. At a time when Nebraska has barely begun cleanup of the AltEn disaster in Mead, and the agrochemical contamination levels in our soil and groundwater are at historic levels, we cannot carelessly add one more pollutant to the mix.

We introduce a new family of jump operators on Borel equivalence relations; specifically, for each countable group Γ we introduce the Γ-jump. We study the elementary properties of the Γ-jumps and compare them with other previously studied jump operators. One of our main results is to establish that for many groups Γ, the Γ-jump is proper in the sense that for any Borel equivalence relation E the Γ-jump of E is strictly higher than E in the Borel reducibility hierarchy. The field of single molecule electronics is based on using single molecule devices to control current in electronic circuits. One area of interest is to reproduce the functionality of traditional components such as wires, switches, and diodes using single molecule junctions. We used computational chemistry to design diodes to investigate what molecular features affect their performance including using different donors, acceptors, and connectors. A comparison of the diode's performance was made by comparing the rectification ratio. About 50 diodes were designed and tested, with rectification ratios ranging from 1.0 to 5.8. Despite the importance of high-latitude surface energy budgets (SEBs) for land-climate interactions in the rapidly changing Arctic, uncertainties in their prediction persist. Here, we harmonize SEB observations across a network of vegetated and glaciated sites at circumpolar scale (1994–2021). Our variance-partitioning analysis identifies vegetation type as an important predictor for SEB-components during Arctic summer (June-August), compared to other SEB-drivers including climate, latitude and permafrost characteristics. Differences among vegetation types can be of similar magnitude as between vegetation and glacier surfaces and are especially high for summer sensible and latent heat fluxes. In this paper, within framework credibility theory, we examine several notions of convergence and statistical convergence of fuzzy variable sequences. The convergence of fuzzy variable sequences such as the notion of convergence in credibility, convergence in distribution, convergence in mean, and convergence uniformly virtually certainly via postponed Cesàro mean and a regular matrix are researched using fuzzy variables. We investigate the connections between these concepts. Significant results on deferred statistical convergence for fuzzy variable sequences are thoroughly investigated.

A study is made on the development of hydromagnetic non-Newtonian Casson and Williamson boundary layer flow in an electrically conducting fluid in the presence of heat flux, mass flux, and the uniform magnetic field. The governing non-linear system of PDEs is transformed into a set of non-linear coupled ODEs and then treated numerically by using the Chebyshev spectral method. In this work, we have proposed some variants of MOMA-Plus method that we have numerically tested for the resolution of nonlinear multiobjective optimization problems. This MOMA-Plus method and variants differ from each other by the choice of aggregation functions in order to reduce the number of objective functions. The theoretical results allowing us to use these aggregation functions to transform multiobjective optimization problems into single objective optimization problems are proved by two theorems. My dissertation examines government and nongovernment entities’ attempts to restore and protect the use and health of the Milwaukee River and its watershed from 1960 to 2000. Under Mayor Henry Maier’s leadership, Milwaukee worked to reclaim the urban riverway to stimulate economic growth. However, state and federal representatives, after the passage of the 1965 Water Quality Act, demanded that the city government prioritize updating the combined storm and sewer system to lessen pollution in the Milwaukee River. Two workshops with subject matter experts in the appropriate fields, were held in November and December 2021 to elicit guidance and feedback from the broader mesophotic and deep benthic scientific community. These workshops focused on best practices/approaches and identifying data gaps relative to habitat assessment and evaluation goals of the Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Community (MDBC) restoration portfolio. The first workshop was a combined effort of the Habitat Assessment and Evaluation (HAE) Project Team and the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) Program. Industrial Economics, Inc. Arctic warming is affecting snow cover and soil hydrology, with consequences for carbon sequestration in tundra ecosystems. The scarcity of observations in the Arctic has limited our understanding of the impact of covarying environmental drivers on the carbon balance of tundra ecosystems. In this study, we address some of these uncertainties through a novel record of 119 site-years of summer data from eddy covariance towers representing dominant tundra vegetation types located on continuous permafrost in the Arctic. Based on the rotation of the stars around a galaxy center, one can estimate the corresponding gravitational acceleration -- which turns out to be much larger than what Newton's theory predicts based on the masses of all visible objects. The majority of physicists believe that this discrepancy indicates the presence of "dark" matter, but this idea has some unsolved problems. An alternative idea -- known as Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND, for short) is that for galaxy-size distances, Newton's gravitation theory needs to be modified. While most physical processes are localized -- in the sense that each event can only affect events in its close vicinity -- many physicists believe that some processes are non-local. These beliefs range from more heretic -- such as hidden variables in quantum physics -- to more widely accepted, such as the non-local character of energy in General Relativity. In this paper, we attract attention to the fact that non-local processes bring in the possibility of drastically speeding up computations.

Depression is a serious medical problem. If diagnosed early, it can usually be cured, but if left undetected, it can lead to suicidal thoughts and behavior. The early stages of depression are difficult to diagnose. Recently, researchers found a promising approach to such diagnosis -- it turns out that depression is correlated with low heart rate variability. In this paper, we show that the general systems approach can explain this empirical relation.
