Spanish-speaking populations in the United States are more vulnerable in disaster contexts due to inequities, such as language barriers, that prevent them from receiving life-saving information. For the past couple of decades, governmental organizations have addressed these issues by translating weather watches, warnings, and advisories into Spanish. Previous studies suggest that these Spanish translations do not communicate the same level of urgency as their English counterparts. To identify whether these translated products result in inequities between English and Spanish speaker reception and comprehension of forecast information, we asked a representative sample of U.S. English (n = 1,550) and Spanish (n …

Understanding Human Actions: Cognitive Assessment And Action Segmentation Using Human Object Interaction, Saif Sayed Dec 2022

Understanding Human Actions: Cognitive Assessment And Action Segmentation Using Human Object Interaction, Saif Sayed

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

Automatic understanding of human behavior has several applications in medicine and surveillance. Analysing human actions can enable cognitive assessment of children by measuring their hyperactivity and response inhibition which can give physicians better understanding of their cognitive state. Automatic and non-invasive assessment for cognitive disorders will increase the affordability and reach for these detection methods and can prove life-changing in child’s development. Human activity can also be analysed in common settings such as cooking in kitchen and understanding the information of human object interaction can give priors on the underlying activity they are performing. In the first section, we focus …

Background: Developing economically viable pathways to produce renewable energy has become an important research theme in recent years. Lignocellulosic biomass is a promising feedstock that can be converted into second-generation biofuels and bioproducts. Global warming has adversely affected climate change causing many environmental changes that have impacted earth surface temperature and rainfall patterns. Recent research has shown that environmental growth conditions altered the composition of drought-stressed switchgrass and directly influenced the extent of biomass conversion to fuels by completely inhibiting yeast growth during fermentation. Our goal in this project was to find a way to overcome the microbial inhibition and …

Fossil Mammals From Hickory Tree Cave, Sullivan County, Tennessee, Alexis Rivera Dec 2022

Fossil Mammals From Hickory Tree Cave, Sullivan County, Tennessee, Alexis Rivera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hickory Tree Cave, also known as Big Spring Cave, is located in the southern Appalachians and is known for fossils that are considered to be Quaternary in age. Fossil mammals were identified and assigned to the lowest taxonomical level possible. Most remains are fragmented or digested and it seems likely that various taphonomic processes are responsible for the resulting assemblage. The site lacks the extreme boreal component of Pleistocene cave faunas in the region (e.g. Baker Bluff Cave), with most reported taxa inhabiting Appalachian deciduous forest environments in North America today. While the presence of tapir (Tapirus sp.) …

Folic Acid – Carbon Dots – Doxorubicin Nanoparticles As Cancer Theranostic, Michael Tetteh Dec 2022

Folic Acid – Carbon Dots – Doxorubicin Nanoparticles As Cancer Theranostic, Michael Tetteh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work focused on engineering bi-functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) based on carbon dots (CDs) to improve early cancer detection and treatment. Therefore, using folic acid (FA) as a targeting agent, the CDs were prepared to deliver high concentrations (HC) of doxorubicin (DOX) and gemcitabine (GEM) covalently and non-covalently to cancer cells. The prepared FA-CDs-DOX/GEM-HC NPs were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Assessment of the drug loading capacity (DLC) and drug loading efficiency (DLE) indicated that the non-covalent NPs have low DLC but high DLE compared to the relatively low DLE and high DLC of covalent …

Nitrogen-Doped And Phosphorus-Doped Epoxy-Sealed Carbon Fiber Ultramicroelectrodes As Electrochemical Sensors For Detection Of Hydrogen Peroxide, Emmanuel Peprah-Yamoah Dec 2022

Nitrogen-Doped And Phosphorus-Doped Epoxy-Sealed Carbon Fiber Ultramicroelectrodes As Electrochemical Sensors For Detection Of Hydrogen Peroxide, Emmanuel Peprah-Yamoah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) are useful as probes for evaluating electroactive species in confined spaces (e.g., inside living cells) and for measuring fast electrochemical reactions. However, UME applications often require modification of the electrode surface to improve selectivity and sensitivity towards target analytes. Previous research in our group demonstrated that a simple soft nitriding method introduces surface nitrogen (N)-containing groups on carbon fiber (CF), leading to improved electroreduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on CF-UMEs. However, sensitivity for H2O2 detection using N-CF-UMEs was low compared to that for other modified UMEs. As an alternative to N-CF-UMEs, …

Evaluating Deep Learning Explanations On Risc-V Assembly As A Reverse Engineering Aid, Daniel F. Koranek

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses several problems surrounding the detection of malware using deep learning models trained on assembly language examples. First, it examines the feasibility of detecting examples of malice using deep learning models trained on RISC-V instruction traces. Next, it examines whether models for detecting trace features and code features in RISC-V assembly can be made explainable (providing rationale for a model’s decision based upon the model’s internal workings) or interpretable (providing additional rationale as model output to support a human’s agreement with the model output). Third, this work examines ways in which it is possible to give additional contextual …

Eco-Dystopian Novels Written By Women: Second, Third, And Fourth Wave Feminism, Trystyn Cox

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The project is thematic; analysis of eco-dystopian novels written by American female authors in the 20th and 21st centuries in order to determine if the different waves of feminism experienced in the United States had any influence over the books. By doing an analysis of eco-dystopian novels the study identifies if there were any outside societal movements or issues going on at the time that may have influenced how the book was created or if a particular book was able to open innovative ideas to the society at the time it was published. I researched the second, third, and fourth …

Fluid-Structure Interaction Modelling Of Neighboring Tubes With Primary Cilium Analysis, Nerion Zekaj, Shawn D. Ryan, Andrew Resnick Dec 2022

Fluid-Structure Interaction Modelling Of Neighboring Tubes With Primary Cilium Analysis, Nerion Zekaj, Shawn D. Ryan, Andrew Resnick

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We have developed a numerical model of two osculating cylindrical elastic renal tubules to investigate the impact of neighboring tubules on the stress applied to a primary cilium. We hypothesize that the stress at the base of the primary cilium will depend on the mechanical coupling of the tubules due to local constrained motion of the tubule wall. The objective of this work was to determine the in-plane stresses of a primary cilium attached to the inner wall of one renal tubule subject to the applied pulsatile flow, with a neighboring renal tube filled with stagnant fluid in close proximity …

(R1953) M-Regression Estimation With The K Nearest Neighbors Smoothing Under Quasi-Associated Data In Functional Statistics, Bellatrach Nadjet, Bouabsa Wahiba, Attouch Mohammed Kadi, Fetitah Omar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The main goal of this paper is to study the non parametric M-estimation under quasi-associated sequence with the k Nearest Neighbor’s method shortly (kNN). We construct an estimator of this nonparametric function and we study its asymptotic properties. Furthermore, a comparison study based on simulated data is also provided to illustrate the highly sensitive of the kNN approach to the presence of even a small proportion of outliers in the data.

(R1522) Modelling The Influence Of Desertic Aerosols On The Transmission Dynamics Of Neisseria Meningitidis Serogroup A, Francis Signing, Berge Tsanou, Samuel Bowong

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper assesses the role of desert aerosols and vaccine on the transmission dynamics of Neisseria Meningitis serogroup A (NmA). It is biologically well-documented that the inhalation of aerosol dust and its presence in the nasal cavity weakens the nasopharyngeal mucosa by damaging the mucosal barrier and inhibiting the mucosal immune defenses of susceptible and vaccinated individuals. We address the latter by proposing and analyzing a mathematical model for the dynamics of NmA that specifically accounts for the fast progression of susceptible and vaccinated individuals to the invasive stage of the disease. We compute the basic reproduction number and use …

(R1888) On The Mackey-Glass Model With A Piecewise Constant Argument, Mehtap Lafci Büyükkahraman

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we deal with the Mackey-Glass model with piecewise constant argument. Because the corresponding difference equation is the difference solution of the equation, the difference equation can clearly predict the dynamic behavior of the equation. So, we look at how the difference equation behaves. We study the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point of the difference equation and it is obtained that this point is a repeller under some conditions. Also, it is shown that every oscillatory solution of the difference equation has semi-cycles of length at least two, and every oscillatory solution of the difference equation is attracted …

(R1992) Rbf-Ps Method For Eventual Periodicity Of Generalized Kawahara Equation, Hameed Ullah Jan, Marjan Uddin, Arif Ullah, Naseeb Ullah

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In engineering and mathematical physics, nonlinear evolutionary equations play an important role. Kawahara equation is one of the famous nonlinear evolution equation appeared in the theories of shallow water waves possessing surface tension, capillary-gravity waves and also magneto-acoustic waves in a plasma. Another specific subjective parts of arrangements for some of evolution equations evidenced by findings link belonging to their long-term actions named as eventual time periodicity discovered over solutions to IBVPs (initial-boundary-value problems). Here we investigate the solution’s eventual periodicity for generalized fifth order Kawahara equation (IBVP) on bounded domain in combination with periodic boundary conditions numerically exploiting mesh-free …

(R1974) A Multi Server Markovian Working Vacation Queue With Server State Dependent Rates And With Partial Breakdown, A. Sundaramoorthy, R. Kalyanaraman

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this article, we consider an M/M/C queue in which the arrival rate and service rate depends on the state of the system. In addition, the servers takes working vacation and the system may breakdown. Whenever breakdown takes place, the repair process immediately commences. During the repair period the customers are given service in a reduced service rate. Based on the vacation termination point, two models have been defined. The steady state probability vector of the number of customers in the queue and the stability condition are obtained using Matrix-Geometric method. The stationary waiting time distributions have been obtained. Some …

(R1995) Weighted Block-Wise Burst Error Correcting Codes, Amita Sethi, Arpana Sharma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we construct new types of codes, called Weighted Block-wise Burst Error Correcting Codes (Weighted BBEC Codes), which are an improvement on the previously known block wise burst error correcting codes in the sense of their weight, i.e., (n = n1 + n2, k) linear codes that correct all the bursts of length b1 (fixed) with the weight w1 (w1 ≤ b1) or more (less) in the first sub-block of length n1 and all the bursts of length b2 (fixed) with the weight w2 or more (less) …

Phosphate Mineralogy And Paragenesis Of The Fletcher Pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, Susanna T. Kreinik Dec 2022

Phosphate Mineralogy And Paragenesis Of The Fletcher Pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, Susanna T. Kreinik

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Investigation of phosphate assemblages selectively collected at the Fletcher Mine pegmatite, North Groton, New Hampshire, yielded eighteen discrete secondary phosphate species. Secondary phases were formed via metasomatic (high temperature) and hydrothermal (low temperature) alteration of primary triphylite and fluorapatite. Mineral associations bear proximal phases known to occur under contrasting conditions, both oxidizing and reducing, suggesting the formation of microenvironments during concomitant mineral generation. Late-stage hydrothermal fluids provide ions taken up in low temperature secondary phases with calcium and magnesium most prevalent in these suites. High iron to manganese ratios in analyzed specimens establish the relative evolution of the pegmatite host. …

ENGR 333

Sustainability is a multi-faceted grand challenge. One of today’s largest challenges is related to sustainability: CO2 emissions from energy consumption. Calvin University purchases natural gas for the energy services it provides; however, it is a major contributor to the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. The ENGR 333 section B class was tasked with the question: What would it take to eliminate Calvin’s natural gas-related net CO2 emissions? After many hours of research and calculations, the ENGR 333 section B class answered this question with recommendations such as implementing ground source heat pumps, console heat pumps, air source heat …

Quantifying The Magnitude Of Total Dose Deviation Caused By Various Sources Of Error Among Iroc Phantom Irradiation Results, Sharbacha S. Edward

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

The Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC) phantoms are used as an end-to-end test of an institution’s radiotherapy processes, and for clinical trial credentialing. Phantoms are treated like patients, and evaluation of the doses received by the thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) inside the phantom, reflects the accuracy with which an institution can image, plan and irradiate a phantom or patient. Recent phantom results show that among the hundreds of various IROC phantoms irradiated annually, 8-17% of institutions fail this test. The purpose of this work was to investigate the various types of errors that may occur during the treatment process and …

A First-Tier Framework For Assessing Toxicological Risk From Vaporized Cannabis Concentrates, Shawna Vreeke, David M. Faulkner, Robert Strongin, Echoleah Rufer Dec 2022

A First-Tier Framework For Assessing Toxicological Risk From Vaporized Cannabis Concentrates, Shawna Vreeke, David M. Faulkner, Robert Strongin, Echoleah Rufer

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Vaporization is an increasingly prevalent means to consume cannabis, but there is little guidance for manufacturers or regulators to evaluate additive safety. This paper presents a first-tier framework for regulators and cannabis manufacturers without significant toxicological expertise to conduct risk assessments and prioritize additives in cannabis concentrates for acceptance, elimination, or further evaluation. Cannabinoids and contaminants (e.g., solvents, pesticides, etc.) are excluded from this framework because of the complexity involved in their assessment; theirs would not be a first-tier toxicological assessment. Further, several U.S. state regulators have provided guidance for major cannabinoids and contaminants. Toxicological risk assessment of cannabis concentrate …

Intra-Skeletal Variation In Stable Isotopes Through Non-Destructive Approaches: Applications Of The Patterns Of Skeletal Remodeling To Biological Anthropology, Armando Anzellini Dec 2022

Intra-Skeletal Variation In Stable Isotopes Through Non-Destructive Approaches: Applications Of The Patterns Of Skeletal Remodeling To Biological Anthropology, Armando Anzellini

Doctoral Dissertations

Stable isotope analysis is a well-established method in biological anthropology used to deliver data on residence, diet, and life history. Samples for these analyses are often collected from the diaphyses of long bones with an assumption of an expected rate of turnover between five and ten years, depending on the skeletal element. However, the biological foundations of this assumption are still uncertain, especially concerning the intra-skeletal and intra-element variation of isotopic signatures that may relate to patterns of remodeling. Exploring these gaps in intra-element isotopic variation requires fine-grained work using multiple bones from multiple individuals, but such work is limited …

Using Landsat Satellite Imagery To Estimate Groundcover In The Grainbelt Of Western Australia, Justin Laycock, Nick Middleton, Karen Holmes Dec 2022

Using Landsat Satellite Imagery To Estimate Groundcover In The Grainbelt Of Western Australia, Justin Laycock, Nick Middleton, Karen Holmes

Resource management technical reports

Maintaining vegetative groundcover is an important component of sustainable agricultural systems and plays a critical function for soil and land conservation in Western Australia’s (WA) grainbelt (the south-west cropping region). This report describes how satellite imagery can be used to quantitatively and objectively estimate total vegetative groundcover, both in near real time and historically across large areas. We used the Landsat seasonal fractional groundcover products developed by the Joint Remote Sensing Research Program from the extensive archive of Landsat imagery. These products provide an estimate of the percentage of green vegetation, non-green vegetation and bare soil for each 30 m …

Unassisted Photoelectrochemical Solar-To-Hydrogen On Cubi2o4 Photocathodes Using Glycerol As A Sacrificial Oxidant, Caroline Eddy Dec 2022

Unassisted Photoelectrochemical Solar-To-Hydrogen On Cubi2o4 Photocathodes Using Glycerol As A Sacrificial Oxidant, Caroline Eddy

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses

The need to decarbonize society has driven the development of alternative energy technologies. Solar panels are capable of generating electricity at large scale and at competitive costs to fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas. However, they are only capable of generating electricity when the sun is out. It is therefore necessary to understand how to store that energy for on-demand use. It is also desirable that the storage be portable, lightweight, and compatible with transportation infrastructure like fossil fuels are. A very desirable chemical fuel is H2 which can be produced simply by water electrolysis. Production of …

Greener: Graph Neural Networks For News Media Profiling, Panayot Panayotov, Utsav Shukla, Husrev T. Sencar, Mohamed Nabeel, Preslav Nakov

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

We study the problem of profiling news media on the Web with respect to their factuality of reporting and bias. This is an important but under-studied problem related to disinformation and “fake news” detection, but it addresses the issue at a coarser granularity compared to looking at an individual article or an individual claim. This is useful as it allows to profile entire media outlets in advance. Unlike previous work, which has focused primarily on text (e.g., on the articles published by the target website, or on the textual description in their social media profiles or in Wikipedia), here we …

This thesis develops a fractional matrix-weighted John-Nirenberg type theorem, two matrix-weighted commutator bounds for the fractional integral operator, an Orlicz bumped two matrix-weighted commutator upper bound for the fractional integral operator, and a fractional matrix-weighted version of dyadic Littlewood-Paley theory.

Evaluating The Health Impacts Of Fruit And Vegetable Intake At The Individual Level And Food Pantry Level Among Food Pantry Users, Jiacheng Chen Dec 2022

Evaluating The Health Impacts Of Fruit And Vegetable Intake At The Individual Level And Food Pantry Level Among Food Pantry Users, Jiacheng Chen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Background: Chronic diseases impose heavy burdens on individuals and the healthcare system in the US. Many factors were found to be associated with chronic diseases, including demographics, family history, social environmental factors, and individual behavioral factors such as diet and physical activity. Among those factors, fruit and vegetable intake can have substantial health impacts via a variety of causal pathways. Fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption is generally lower among individuals living in households experiencing food insecurity and rely on food assistance programs. Decreased F&V intake among food pantry users may negatively impact health. However, conducting quantitative analysis on this population …

Motion Planning Under Uncertainties, Sourav Dutta Dec 2022

Motion Planning Under Uncertainties, Sourav Dutta

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A robot is an agent that can bring some changes to the environment around it. Motion planning is the problem of carrying out specialized tasks by a robot by either moving itself or some other object (usually called \textit{payload}) from one place to another. In a real-world scenario, a robot is faced with constraints such as momentum, friction, sensor inaccuracies, etc., that can affect its decision-making while performing specialized tasks. These constraints are identified as uncertainties, and successful planning involves making provisions for such uncertainties. In this work, we present methods like stochastic processes, sequential inference, and pattern recognition to …

Probabilistic Forecasting Of Winter Mixed Precipitation Types In New York State Utilizing A Random Forest, Brian Chandler Filipiak Dec 2022

Probabilistic Forecasting Of Winter Mixed Precipitation Types In New York State Utilizing A Random Forest, Brian Chandler Filipiak

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Operational forecasters face a plethora of challenges when making a forecast; they must consider multiple data sources ranging from radar and satellites to surface and upper air observations, to numerical weather prediction output. Forecasts must be done in a limited window of time, which adds an additional layer of difficulty to the task. These challenges are exacerbated by winter mixed precipitation events where slight differences in thermodynamic profiles or changes in terrain create different precipitation types across small areas. In addition to being difficult to forecast, mixed precipitation events can have large-scale impacts on our society.

Characterization Of An Amine-Thiol Cosolvent System : Ethylenediamine And Mercaptoethanol, Fernanda Giongo Fernandes Dec 2022

Characterization Of An Amine-Thiol Cosolvent System : Ethylenediamine And Mercaptoethanol, Fernanda Giongo Fernandes

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Since its introduction, the amine-thiol cosolvent system has been successfully utilized for the deposition of various thin-film devices, but its mechanism of action is still uncertain. Herein, we have attempted to dissect some of the chemical characteristics of amine-thiol cosolvents, with a special interest taken towards a mixture of ethylenediamine (en) and mercaptoethanol (ME). Conductivity was measured for multiple amine-thiol combinations at different ratios to determine extent of ionization in solution, with en-ME having one of the highest solution conductivities. Exposing the solution to air for several days was found to decrease the conductivity of en-ME, indicating the formation of …
