Multi-Electron Reaction-Boosted High Energy Density Batteries: Material And System Innovation, Rui-Qi Guo, Feng Wu, Xin-Ran Wang, Ying Bai, Chuan Wu
Journal of Electrochemistry
The continuous development of the global energy structure transformation has put forward higher demands upon the development of batteries. The improvements of the energy density have become one of the important indicators and hot topic for novel secondary batteries. The energy density of existing lithium-ion battery has encountered a bottleneck due to the limitations of material and systems. Herein, this paper introduces the concept and development of multi-electron reaction materials over the past twenty years. Guided by the multi-electron reaction, light weight electrode and multi-ion effect, current development strategies and future trends of high-energy-density batteries are highlighted from the perspective …

Fill And Dump Measurement Of The Neutron Lifetime Using An Asymmetric Magneto-Gravitational Trap, Alexander Komives, Et Al.
Fill And Dump Measurement Of The Neutron Lifetime Using An Asymmetric Magneto-Gravitational Trap, Alexander Komives, Et Al.
Physics & Astronomy Faculty publications
The past two decades have yielded several new measurements and reanalysis of older measurements of the neutron lifetime. These have led to a 4.4 standard deviation discrepancy between the most precise measurements of the neutron decay rate producing protons in cold neutron beams and the most precise lifetime measured in neutron storage experiments. Measurements using different techniques are important for investigating whether there are unidentified systematic effects in any of the measurements. In this paper we report a new measurement using the Los Alamos asymmetric magneto-gravitational trap where the surviving neutrons are counted external to the trap using the fill …
Predicting Convection Configurations In Coupled Fluid-Porous Systems, Matthew Mccurdy, Nicholas J. Moore, Xiaoming Wang
Predicting Convection Configurations In Coupled Fluid-Porous Systems, Matthew Mccurdy, Nicholas J. Moore, Xiaoming Wang
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A ubiquitous arrangement in nature is a free-flowing fluid coupled to a porous medium, for example a river or lake lying above a porous bed. Depending on the environmental conditions, thermal convection can occur and may be confined to the clear fluid region, forming shallow convection cells, or it can penetrate into the porous medium, forming deep cells. Here, we combine three complementary approaches - linear stability analysis, fully nonlinear numerical simulations and a coarse-grained model - to determine the circumstances that lead to each configuration. the coarse-grained model yields an explicit formula for the transition between deep and shallow …

Multiomics Approach Captures Hepatic Metabolic Network Altered By Chronic Ethanol Administration, Isin Tuna Sakallioglu, Bridget Tripp, Jacy Kubik, Carol A. Casey, Paul G. Thomes, Robert Powers
Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications
Using a multiplatform and multiomics approach, we identified metabolites, lipids, proteins, and metabolic pathways that were altered in the liver after chronic ethanol administration. A functional enrichment analysis of the multiomics dataset revealed that rats treated with ethanol experienced an increase in hepatic fatty acyl content, which is consistent with an initial development of steatosis. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics data revealed that the chronic ethanol exposure selectively modified toxic substances such as an increase in glucuronidation tyramine and benzoyl; and a depletion in cholesterol-conjugated glucuronides. Similarly, the lipidomics results revealed that ethanol …

Recent developments in neuroscience and artificial intelligence have allowed machines to decode mental processes with growing accuracy. Neuroethicists have speculated that perfecting these technologies may result in reactions ranging from an invasion of privacy to an increase in self-understanding. Yet, evaluating these predictions is difficult given that people are poor at forecasting their reactions. To address this, we developed a paradigm using elements of performance magic to emulate future neurotechnologies. We led 59 participants to believe that a (sham) neurotechnological machine could infer their preferences, detect their errors, and reveal their deep-seated attitudes. The machine gave participants randomly assigned positive …

Conference papers
Child sexual abuse inflicts lifelong devastating consequences for victims and is a growing social concern. In most countries, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) distribution is illegal. As a result, there are many research papers in the literature which proposed technologies to detect and investigate CSAM. In this survey, a comprehensive search of the peer reviewed journal and conference paper databases (including preprints) is conducted to identify high-quality literature. We use the PRISMA methodology to refine our search space to 2,761 papers published by Springer, Elsevier, IEEE and ACM. After iterative reviews of title, abstract and full text for relevance to …

Late-Stage Functionalization Through Click Chemistry Provides Glut5-Targeting Glycoconjugate As A Potential Pet Imaging Probe, Adelina Oronova, Marina Tanasova
Michigan Tech Publications
The targeting of facilitative sugar transporters (GLUTs) has been utilized in the development of tools for diagnostics and therapy. The interest in this area is promoted by the phenomenon of alterations in cellular metabolic processes that are linked to multitudes of metabolic disorders and diseases. However, nonspecific targeting (e.g., glucose-transporting GLUTs) leads to a lack of disease detection efficiency. Among GLUTs, GLUT5 stands out as a prominent target for developing specific molecular tools due to its association with metabolic diseases, including cancer. This work reports a non-radiolabeled fluoride (19F) coumarin-based glycoconjugate of 2,5-anhydro-D-mannitol as a potential PET imaging probe that …

The copper Heliocles coin and two silver Demetrius coins dated to the II century BC from the archaeological works of the Uzundara fortress of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom were studied using non-destructive structural diagnostics methods. The phase analysis of the coins was performed using the X-ray diffraction method. Also, the spatial distribution of the internal components of the coins was investigated by neutron imaging methods. It has been established that the dominant phase of the Heliocles coin is copper, however, a small volume of patina was found. It is mainly represented by tenorite CuO phase. The neutron tomography method indicates a …

Effect Of Graphene Oxide On Spectral-Luminescenct Properties Of Xanthene Dye, E. V. Seliverstova, E. Zh. Alikhaidarova, N. Kh. Ibrayev
Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials
The effect of graphene oxide on the spectral and luminescent properties of xanthene dyes was studied. During the interaction of graphene oxide (GO) with a cationic dye, aggregation of Rhodamine 6G occurs, which is expressed as an increase in the optical density of the short-wavelength shoulder in the absorption spectrum of the dye. GO sheets can act as adsorption centers for dye molecules due to the influence of the Coulomb and intermolecular forces between GO and Rhodamine 6G. This effect is practically not pronounced for anionic dyes. The quenching of the dye fluorescence intensity in the presence of GO was …

Equivalent Hazard Magnitude Scale, Yi Victor Wang, Antonia Sebastian
Equivalent Hazard Magnitude Scale, Yi Victor Wang, Antonia Sebastian
Institute for ECHO Articles and Research
Hazard magnitude scales are widely adopted to facilitate communication regarding hazard events and the corresponding decision making for emergency management. A hazard magnitude scale measures the strength of a hazard event considering the natural forcing phenomena and the severity of the event with respect to average entities at risk. However, existing hazard magnitude scales cannot be easily adapted for comparative analysis across different hazard types. Here, we propose an equivalent hazard magnitude scale to measure the hazard strength of an event across multiple types of hazards. We name the scale the Gardoni Scale after Professor Paolo Gardoni. We design the …

On Kernel-Based Estimator Of Odds Ratio Using Different Stratified Sampling Schemes, Abbas Eftekharian, Hani Samawi, Haresh Rochani
Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Environmental Health Sciences Faculty Publications
The kernel-based estimator of Cochran Mantel-Haenszel odds ratio based on stratified simple and ranked set sampling is proposed. The expectation and variance of the estimator are analytically obtained. Using a simulation study, the estimator based on stratified ranked set sampling is more efficient than its counterpart based on stratified simple random sampling. Finally, the estimator's performance is investigated by using base deficit data.

Nitrous Oxide Production And Isotopomer Composition By Fungi Isolated From Salt Marsh Sediments, Birch Maxwell Lazo-Murphy, Samantha Larson, Sydney Staines, Heather Bruck, Julianne Mchenry, Annie Bourbonnais, Xuefeng Peng
Faculty Publications
The emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas and ozone-depleting agent, have been steadily increasing from coastal environments, such as salt marsh sediments, as a result of anthropogenic nutrient loading. Biotic processes, including nitrification and denitrification, are the largest sources of N2O from salt marsh sediments. While it is assumed that the bulk of N2O from salt marsh sediment is produced by nitrification and bacterial denitrification, recent reports suggest fungal denitrification may contribute significantly. In this study, four fungi capable of growth under sulfidic conditions were isolated from salt marsh sediments in …

The Acute Effects Of Talocrural Mwm Compared With The Application Of Soft-Tissue Of The Plantarfascia On Chronic Lateral Ankle Sprains For Ankle Dorsiflexion R.O.M., Peter Hempenstall, Brian O'Rourke
SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal
Previous research has looked at various treatment remedies for improving acute ankle Dorsiflexion Range of Motion (DFROM) post chronic Lateral Ankle Sprain (LAS). Mulligan’s Mobilisation with Movement (MWM) appears frequently however, the significance and mechanism remain quite conflicting (Gilbreath et al., 2015). It is also known that after a LAS, the Lateral Ligament Complex (LLC) is compromised and the calcaneus inverts, increasing stiffness of plantarfascia (Al-Mohrej & Al-Kenani, 2016, Denegar et al., 2002, Loudon & Bell, 1996). The objective of this study was to further explore the effectiveness of MWM compared with soft-tissue (ST) application of the plantarfascia on acute …
Therapies For Mitochondrial Disorders, Kayli Sousa Smyth, Anne Mulvihill
Therapies For Mitochondrial Disorders, Kayli Sousa Smyth, Anne Mulvihill
SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal
Mitochondria are cytoplasmic, double-membrane organelles that synthesise adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Mitochondria contain their own genome, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), which is maternally inherited from the oocyte. Mitochondrial proteins are encoded by either nuclear DNA (nDNA) or mtDNA, and both code for proteins forming the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes of the respiratory chain. These complexes form a chain that allows the passage of electrons down the electron transport chain (ETC) through a proton motive force, creating ATP from adenosine diphosphate (ADP). This study aims to explore current and prospective therapies for mitochondrial disorders (MTDS). MTDS are clinical syndromes coupled with abnormalities …

Simulation-Driven Based Utility Evaluation And Recommendation Of Expressway Proactive Speed Limit, Geqi Qi, Sijin Liu, Yikang He, Meng Wang, Ailing Huang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Outside the specific punishment area, the traditional roadside passive speed limit mode lacks traffic management, and thus which indirectly leads to the inconsistency or even sudden change of vehicle behaviors in time and space, thereby affects the traffic efficiency and safety. Focusing on the proactive speed limit mode at vehicle side, a utility evaluation and recommendation method is proposed, which carries out the multi-scenario traffic simulation for varied proactive and passive speed limit considering road line types, traffic flow and vehicle type proportion. From the two perspectives of safety and efficiency, the utility evaluation indicators and weights are extracted …

Abstract: To effectively predict the short-term wind power and its fluctuation range, a prediction method based on hybrid algorithm-optimized support vector machine is proposed. Exploratory data analysis is used to preprocess the original wind speed data to improve the data quality. Chaotic map, Levy flight strategy and particle swarm optimization are used to improve the ant lion algorithm. The support vector machine model optimized by hybrid algorithm is used to predict the wind power. The experimental results show that, compared with the new wind power prediction model, the prediction error of the output results of the method is lower, and …

Low Voltage Ride-Through Modeling For Wind Turbines Based On Neural Odes, Qiping Lai, Tannan Xiao, Dongsheng Li, Chen Shen
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Considering the difficulty of equivalent modeling of low voltage ride-through(LVRT) characteristics of a wind farm, a neural ordinary differential equation(ODE)-based wind farm LVRT modeling methodis proposed. The input of the model is the voltage and wind speed of each wind turbine at the grid connection point of wind farm, and the output is the current at the grid connection point. The model can better characterize the strong nonlinear switching process and describe LVRT characteristics of wind farms under different wind speed scenarios. A simulation example of a wind farm including three doubly-fed induction generators(DFIGs) is established on …
