Diatom Blooms In Harpswell Sound: Seasonality, Succession, And Origin, Charlie Francis O'Brien
Diatom Blooms In Harpswell Sound: Seasonality, Succession, And Origin, Charlie Francis O'Brien
Honors Projects
Harpswell Sound (HS) is an inlet in northeastern Casco Bay that exerts control on Gulf of Maine ecosystem health, yet its complex phytoplankton community dynamics have not been characterized with sufficiently detailed analyses. In this research, high-resolution automated microscopy and current velocity observations were used to test the seasonality, ecological succession, bloom origin location, and potential toxicity of populations in HS between 2020 and 2022. Winter months could exhibit slow accumulation of diatom biovolume. Cold, salty surface water has net outflow in winter as nutrients from depth are replenished during net upwelling conditions, and populations could be exported from the …
On L-Functions And The 1-Level Density, Arav Agarwal
On L-Functions And The 1-Level Density, Arav Agarwal
Honors Projects
We begin with the classical study of the Riemann zeta function and Dirichlet L-functions. This includes a full exposition on one of the most useful ways of exploiting their connection with primes, namely, explicit formulae. We then proceed to introduce statistics of low-lying zeros of Dirichlet L-functions, discussing prior results of Fiorilli and Miller (2015) on the 1-level density of Dirichlet L-functions and their achievement in surpassing the prediction of the powerful Ratios Conjecture. Finally, we present our original work partially generalizing these results to the case of Hecke L-functions over imaginary quadratic fields.

Defense Of A Small Network, Isabella Adkins
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
A sample network will be virtually created consisting of three routers, one switch, and three hosts. The network will be secured using various methods such as enabling passwords and encryption. After the network has been properly secured, various attacks will be attempted with the goal of breaking into the network. These attacks include reconnaissance (gathering information), penetrating the network using the tool Metasploit, and attempting to get a credential phishing email to end users. If successful in the attacks, the network will be revisited and analyzed for any weaknesses or oversights.

Building on previous research, this project aims to continue the investigation of the wettability of various liquids on a uniform, texturized surface. Different surface energies can impact the wettability of a surface. The surface can be hydrophilic, hydrophobic, or in between. The goal of this project is to research how features of texturized surfaces affect the wetting transition of water, oil, and a mixture of both. Additionally, this project aims to improve the quality of the 3D printed surfaces. The surfaces that will be studied are constructed using UV cured resin 3D printing and are made up of an array …
Global Minimum Search For The Largest Ge Cage Stabilized By A Single Interstitial Metal Atom, Alexis Kiefer
Global Minimum Search For The Largest Ge Cage Stabilized By A Single Interstitial Metal Atom, Alexis Kiefer
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Recent joint experimental and theoretical studies showed that the largest Ge cage-like cluster features 14 Ge atoms that encapsulate a single transition metal atom in the [Nb@Ge14]3- cluster. The next larger experimentally confirmed Ge cluster exhibiting a cage-like geometry was found to be viable only when stabilized by two transition metal atoms in the [Co2@Ge16]4- cluster. So, as of now, it is not clear whether a cage-like cluster made out of 15 Ge atom stabilized by a single transition metal is viable. Hence, the aim of this project is to find the …

Using Soil And Forest Type To Map Bedrock In Nemo, South Dakota, Madison R. Isaac
Using Soil And Forest Type To Map Bedrock In Nemo, South Dakota, Madison R. Isaac
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Bedrock mapping can be used to locate economic deposits, assess natural disaster (e.g., mass wasting) risk, and decipher the geologic history of a region. This study examines a site at Nemo, South Dakota to assess whether two contrasting types of bedrock produce different soil that result in different types of forest cover. Although bedrock varied, other soil forming factors were uniform. Within an approximately 1 km2 area, quartzite and metagabbro bedrock, ponderosa pine and quaking aspen forests were mapped. The soil above the quartzite bedrock is thinner and sandier and is dominated by ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa). …
Long-Range And Chaotic Active Mixing Of Swimming Microbes In A Vortex Chain Flow, Nghia Le
Long-Range And Chaotic Active Mixing Of Swimming Microbes In A Vortex Chain Flow, Nghia Le
Honors Theses
We present experiments studying the motion and active mixing of swimming mi- crobes in laminar, vortex-dominated fluid flows. We are testing a theory that predicts the existence of swimming invariant manifolds (SwIMs) - invisible, one-way barriers blocking the paths of self-propelled tracers in the flow in one direction. We also pro- pose that the SwIMs together can form chute structures in three-dimensional phase space that facilitate cross-vortex transport of the microbes. We also observe evidence of how these structures promote long-range transport at different non-dimensional velocities (microbe’s velocity relative to flow velocity). Long-range transport is quan- tified by measuring the …

Neoichnological Framework Of Coastal Habitat Shifts Represented By Bahamian Decapod Burrows, Ilya Val Buynevich, Karen Kopcznski, Christopher Sparacio, H. Allen Curran
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
In coastal settings, the cumulative spatial and temporal impacts of burrowing, ichnofabric formation, and biodeposition by large crustaceans have been largely neglected at zoogeomorphic scales. These traces also serve as important (paleo-)environmental and (paleo)hydrologic indicators, both vertical (tidal or groundwater level) and lateral (areal wetland or basin extent). To date, 354 only few studies have addressed the comparative value of decapod ichnites generated by land crabs in carbonate settings. The aim of this paper is to introduce a general conceptual framework for burrows created by three crab species in the Bahama Archipelago, using examples from San Salvador Island.

New Advances In Long-Term Monitoring Of Storm-Deposited Boulder Ridges Along Rocky Shorelines Of San Salvador Island, Bahamas, Bosiljka Glumac, Ursula Miquel, H. Allen Curran
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Beginning in January 2012, we have monitored two boulder ridges on San Salvador: Singer Bar Point (SBP, length ~790 m) along the reef- and lagoon-protected northern coast and The Gulf (TG, length ~460 m) on the island’s high-energy southern coast. This long-term monitoring aims at documenting changes in ridge morphology and distribution, and the direction and amount of movement of individual boulders to gain insights into the intensity and effects of storms on these coastal areas.
In the initial stage of our investigations, the largest boulders from each site were photographed, GPS-located, measured, and characterized by composition and morphology. Boulders …

H2(G) Production From Dimethylamine Borane By Cu0/Wo3 Nps Catalyst, Doaa Al-Hameedawi̇, Seda Karaboğa, İzzet Morkan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Cu0 NPs supported on tungsten (VI) oxide (WO3) were in situ generated from the reduction of Cu2+ ions during dehydrogenation of dimethylamine borane (DMAB). The Cu0/WO3 NPs displayed tangible catalytic activity in H2 (g) releasing reaction and they were identified by using advanced techniques. Cu0/WO3 NPs were found as active catalyst providing one equiv. H2(g) per mole of DMAB. The results from TEM images display the formation of Cu0 NPs with an average particle size of 4.6 ± 1.0 nm on the surface of WO3. Moreover, Cu0/WO3 NPs with various metal loadings were prepared and tested as catalyst in dehydrogenation …
Complexities Of Community Consultation In Chile's Lithium Industry, Isabella R. Whelan
Complexities Of Community Consultation In Chile's Lithium Industry, Isabella R. Whelan

Echoed by November’s COP27 in Egypt, the climate crisis has become an increasingly pressing and global issue, with the need to move away from fossil fuels more urgent than ever. In attempts to decarbonize the global economy, many countries and companies have turned to electrification –particularly within the transportation sector, one of today’s largest contributors of greenhouse gasses. A crucial component of energy storage and batteries is lithium, now considered a “critical mineral.” Demand for lithium has skyrocketed in recent years and is only expected to continue growing. More than fifty percent of the world’s lithium supply is found within …

Second language proficiency may be predicted with electrophysiological techniques. In a machine learning application, this electrophysiological data may be used for language instructors and language students to assess their language learning. This study identifies how electroencephalogram (EEG) power spectrum and cross spectrum data of the brain cortex relates to Spanish second language (L2) proficiency of 20 Spanish language students of varying proficiency levels at the University of New Hampshire. The two metrics for assessing cortical power and processing were event-related desynchronization (ERD)—a measure of relative change in power—of the alpha (8-12 Hz) brain frequency band, and alpha and beta (13-30Hz) …

Bedrock Channel Geometry: Meter To Micron Scale Controls On Fluvial Incision, Nicholas J. Colaianne
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
The relative resistance of various rock types to incisional processes vary widely and the properties governing bedrock erodibility are poorly understood. Lithologic properties influencing erodibility are the culmination of a rock’s depositional, diagenetic, and exhumation processes. Difficulty identifying a convenient physical proxy for erodibility suggests examining evidence of these processes holistically may offer insight into the role of each in setting a rock’s resistance to incisional forces. In this study we use measured channel geometries along a short stretch of the Dry Fork, WV hosting three distinct lithologic settings to infer relative erodibility against measured and observed fluvial, lithologic, and …
