Climate change and nutrient pollution contribute to the expanding global footprint of harmful algal blooms. To better predict their spatial distributions and disentangle biophysical controls, a novel Lagrangian particle tracking and biological (LPT-Bio) model was developed with a high-resolution numerical model and remote sensing. The LPT-Bio model integrates the advantages of Lagrangian and Eulerian approaches by explicitly simulating algal bloom dynamics, algal biomass change, and diel vertical migrations along predicted trajectories. The model successfully captured the intensity and extent of the 2020 Margalefidinium polykrikoides bloom in the lower Chesapeake Bay and resolved fine-scale structures of bloom patchiness, demonstrating a reliable …

Marine diazotrophs convert dinitrogen (N2) gas into bioavailable nitrogen (N), supporting life in the global ocean. In 2012, the first version of the global oceanic diazotroph database (version 1) was published. Here, we present an updated version of the database (version 2), significantly increasing the number of in situ diazotrophic measurements from 13 565 to 55 286. Data points for N2 fixation rates, diazotrophic cell abundance, and nifH gene copy abundance have increased by 184 %, 86 %, and 809 %, respectively. Version 2 includes two new data sheets for the nifH gene copy abundance of non-cyanobacterial …
Fitting Time Series Models To Fisheries Data To Ascertain Age, Kathleen S. Kirch, Norou Diawara, Cynthia M. Jones
Fitting Time Series Models To Fisheries Data To Ascertain Age, Kathleen S. Kirch, Norou Diawara, Cynthia M. Jones
OES Faculty Publications
The ability of government agencies to assign accurate ages of fish is important to fisheries management. Accurate ageing allows for most reliable age-based models to be used to support sustainability and maximize economic benefit. Assigning age relies on validating putative annual marks by evaluating accretional material laid down in patterns in fish ear bones, typically by marginal increment analysis. These patterns often take the shape of a sawtooth wave with an abrupt drop in accretion yearly to form an annual band and are typically validated qualitatively. Researchers have shown key interest in modeling marginal increments to verify the marks do, …

Particulate phases transport trace metals (TM) and thereby exert a major control on TM distribution in the ocean. Particulate TMs can be classified by their origin as lithogenic (crustal material), biogenic (cellular), or authigenic (formed in situ), but distinguishing these fractions analytically in field samples is a challenge often addressed using operational definitions and assumptions. These different phases require accurate characterization because they have distinct roles in the biogeochemical iron cycle. Particles collected from the upper 2,000 m of the northwest subtropical Atlantic Ocean over four seasonal cruises throughout 2019 were digested with a chemical leach to operationally distinguish labile …

Phytoplankton exhibit diverse physiological responses to temperature which influence their fitness in the environment and consequently alter their community structure. Here, we explored the sensitivity of phytoplankton community structure to thermal response parameterization in a modelled marine phytoplankton community. Using published empirical data, we evaluated the maximum thermal growth rates (μmax) and temperature coefficients (Q10; the rate at which growth scales with temperature) of six key Phytoplankton Functional Types (PFTs): coccolithophores, cyanobacteria, diatoms, diazotrophs, dinoflagellates, and green algae. Following three well-documented methods, PFTs were either assumed to have (1) the same μmax and …

A Miocene Nannofossil Biostratigraphic Case Study: Alaminos Canyon Block 627 And Mississippi Canyon Block 555, And Sedimentation Rates In The Gulf Of Mexico, Bethany L. Cobb Faulk, Murlene W. Clark
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The Miocene sediments of 2 deep—water boreholes from the northern Gulf of Mexico, from Alaminos Canyon (AC) Block 627 and Mississippi Canyon (MC) Block 555, have been biostratigraphically analyzed using calcareous nannofossils, revealing changes in sedimentation rates and depositional environments between these 2 areas. High nannofossil abundance values and low sedimentation rates generally recorded in the Alaminos Canyon region suggest a condensed section during much of the Miocene, associated with a basinal environment. Mississippi Canyon exhibits lower nannofossil abundance and higher sedimentation rates compared to Alaminos Canyon during the majority of the Miocene. Increased sediment volumes are largely attributed to …

The growth of diatoms in the Southern Ocean, especially the region surrounding the West Antarctic Peninsula, is frequently constrained by low dissolved iron and other trace metal concentrations. This challenge may be overcome by mutualisms between diatoms and co-occurring associated bacteria, in which diatoms produce organic carbon as a substrate for bacterial growth, and bacteria produce siderophores, metal-binding ligands that can supply diatoms with metals upon uptake as well as other useful secondary compounds for diatom growth like vitamins. To examine the relationships between diatoms and bacteria in the plankton (diatom) size class (> 3 mu m), we sampled both …

Seagrasses are foundation species that provide ecosystem functions and services, including increased biodiversity, sediment retention, carbon sequestration, and fish nursery habitat. However, anthropogenic stressors that reduce water quality, impose large-scale climate changes, and amplify weather patterns, such as marine heatwaves, are altering seagrass meadow configurations. Quantifying large-scale trends in seagrass distributions will help evaluate the impacts of climate drivers on their functions and services. Here, we quantified spatiotemporal dynamics in abundances and configurations of intertidal and shallow subtidal seagrass (Zostera muelleri) meadows in 20 New Zealand (NZ) estuaries that span a 5-year period (mid/late 2016–early 2022) just before, …

Carbohydrate-based low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are compounds with the capability to self-assemble into complex molecular networks within a solvent, leading to solvent immobilization. This process of gel formation depends on noncovalent interactions, including Van der Waals, hydrogen bonding, and π–π stacking. Due to their potential applications in environmental remediation, drug delivery, and tissue engineering, these molecules have emerged as an important area of research. In particular, various 4,6-O-benzylidene acetal-protected D-glucosamine derivatives have shown promising gelation abilities. In this study, a series of C-2-carbamate derivatives containing a para-methoxy benzylidene acetal functional group were synthesized and characterized. These compounds exhibited good …

Ocean warming is increasingly affecting marine ecosystems across the globe. Reef-building corals are particularly affected by warming, with mass bleaching events increasing in frequency and leading to widespread coral mortality. Yet, some corals can resist or recover from bleaching better than others. Such variability in thermal resilience could be critical to reef persistence; however, the scientific community lacks standardized diagnostic approaches to rapidly and comparatively assess coral thermal vulnerability prior to bleaching events. We present the Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System (CBASS) as a low-cost, open-source, field-portable experimental system for rapid empirical assessment of coral thermal thresholds using standardized temperature …

In this study, we present a current state-of-the-art review of middle-to-near IR emission spectra of four simple astrophysically relevant molecular radicals—OH, NH, CN and CH. The spectra of these radicals were measured by means of time-resolved Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the 700–7500 cm−1 spectral range and with 0.07–0.02 cm−1 spectral resolution. The radicals were generated in a glow discharge of gaseous mixtures in a specially designed discharge cell. The spectra of short-lived radicals published here are of great importance, especially for the detailed knowledge and study of the composition of exoplanetary atmospheres in selected new planets. Today, …

Spatial heterogeneity and migration of hosts and ticks have an impact on the spread, extinction and persistence of tick-borne diseases. In this paper, we investigate the impact of between-patch migration of white-tailed deer and lone star ticks on the dynamics of a tick-borne disease with regard to disease extinction and persistence using a system of Itô stochastic differential equations model. It is shown that the disease-free equilibrium exists and is unique. The general formula for computing the basic reproduction number for all patches is derived. We show that for patches in isolation, the basic reproduction number is equal to the …

Forecasting links in a network is a crucial task in various applications such as social networks, internet traffic management, and data mining. Many studies on forecasting links in social networks and on other networks have been conducted over the last decade. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on graph Laplacian eigenmaps for predicting the geographic location of nodes in complex networks. Our method utilizes the adjacency matrix of the network and generates a scoring matrix that captures the similarity between nodes in terms of their geographic location. By transforming the distance matrices into score matrices using exponential …

This paper studies oscillatory properties of solutions of a dynamic equation on the set of time scales $\mathbf{T}_\lambda$ provided that the graininess function $\mu_\lambda$ approaches zero as $\lambda\to 0$. We derived the conditions under which oscillation of solutions of differential equations implies that of solutions of the corresponding equations defined on time scales with the same initial data, and vice versa.

On Max-Min Solutions Of Fuzzy Games With Nonlinear Memberships Functions, Adem Cengi̇z Çevi̇kel
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we deal with two-person zero-sum games with fuzzy goals. We investigated the cases where the membership functions of the players are nonlinear. We examined how the solutions should be if the membership functions of players were exponential functions. In case players' membership functions are exponential, we developed a new method for the maximin solution according to a degree of attainment of the fuzzy goals. An application was made to show the effectiveness of the method.

In this paper, we investigate geodesics of the tangent bundle $TM$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ endowed with an arbitrary pseudo-Riemannian $g$-natural metric of Kaluza-Klein type. Then considering a class of naturally defined almost complex structures on $TM$, constructed by V. Oproiu, we construct a class of magnetic fields and we characterize the corresponding magnetic curves on $TM$, when $(M,g)$ is a space form.

A stick figure $X\subset \mathbb{P}^r$ is a nodal curve whose irreducible components are lines. For fixed integers $r\ge 3$, $s\ge 2$ and $d$ we study the maximal arithmetic genus of a connected stick figure (or any reduced and connected curve) $X\subset \mathbb{P}^r$ such that $\deg (X)=d$ and $h^0(\mathcal{I}_X(s-1))=0$. We consider Halphen's problem of obtaining all arithmetic genera below the maximal one.
Novel Fano Type Lower Bounds On The Minimum Error Probability Of List $M$-Ary Hypothesis Testing, Berkan Dülek
Novel Fano Type Lower Bounds On The Minimum Error Probability Of List $M$-Ary Hypothesis Testing, Berkan Dülek
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
he problem of list $M$-ary hypothesis testing with fixed list size $L< M$ is considered. Based on some random observation, the test outputs a list of $L$ candidates out of $M$ possible hypotheses. The probability of list error is defined as the probability of the event that the list output by the test does not contain the true hypothesis that has generated the observation. An identity is derived that relates the minimum average probability of error of the optimal list hypothesis test to the minimum average probability of error of an optimal maximum a posteriori probability decision rule. The latter decides among an alternative set of hypotheses corresponding to all possible $L$-component mixtures of the distributions that characterize the observation under the original $M$ candidate hypotheses. As an application, the proposed identity is employed to obtain novel Fano type lower bounds on the minimum error probability of list $M$-ary hypothesis testing.

Metrical Almost Periodicity, Metrical Approximations Of Functions And Applications, Belkacem Chaouchi, Marko Kostic, Daniel Velinov
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we analyze Levitan and Bebutov metrical approximations of functions $F :\Lambda \times X \rightarrow Y$ by trigonometric polynomials and $\rho$-periodic type functions, where $\emptyset \neq \Lambda \subseteq {\mathbb R}^{n}$, $X$ and $Y$ are complex Banach spaces, and $\rho$ is a general binary relation on $Y$. We also analyze various classes of multidimensional Levitan almost periodic functions in general metric and multidimensional Bebutov uniformly recurrent functions in general metric. We provide several applications of our theoretical results to the abstract Volterra integro-differential equations and the partial differential equations.

In this paper, first we define Clairaut Riemannian map between Riemannian manifolds by using a geodesic curve on the base space and find necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian map to be Clairaut with a nontrivial example. We also obtain necessary and sufficient condition for a Clairaut Riemannian map to be harmonic. Thereafter, we study Clairaut Riemannian map from Riemannian manifold to Ricci soliton with a nontrivial example. We obtain scalar curvatures of $rangeF_\ast$ and $(rangeF_\ast)^\bot$ by using Ricci soliton. Further, we obtain necessary conditions for the leaves of $rangeF_\ast$ to be almost Ricci soliton and Einstein. We also …

Closure Operators, Irreducibility, Urysohn's Lemma, And Tietze Extension Theorem For Proximity Spaces, Samed Özkan, Muammer Kula, Sümeyye Kula, Tesni̇m Meryem Baran
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we introduce two notions of closure in the category of proximity spaces which satisfy (weak) hereditariness, productivity, and idempotency, and we characterize each of $T_{i}, i=0,1,2$, proximity spaces by using these closure operators and show how these subcategories are related. Furthermore, we characterize the irreducible proximity spaces and investigate the relationship among each of irreducible, connected and $T_{i}, i=1,2$, proximity spaces. Finally, we present Tietze extension theorem and Urysohn's lemma for proximity spaces.

The Set Of Arf Numerical Semigroups With Given Frobenius Number, María Ángeles Moreno-Frías, Jose Carlos Rosales
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
A covariety is a nonempty family $C$ of numerical semigroups that satisfies a certain conditions. In this work we will show that if $F$ is a positive integer, then the set of Arf numerical semigroup with Frobenius number $F$, denoted by $(F)$, is a covatiety. The previous results will be used to give an algorithm which calculates the set $(F).$ Also we will see that if $X\subseteq S\backslash \Delta(F)$ for some $S\in (F),$ then there is the smallest element of $(F)$ containing $X.$
