Network Intrusion Detection Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Hamed T. Sanusi
Network Intrusion Detection Using Deep Reinforcement Learning, Hamed T. Sanusi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis delves into cybersecurity by applying Deep Reinforcement(DRL) Learning in network intrusion detection. One advantage of DRL is the ability to adapt to changing network conditions and evolving attack methods, making it a promising solution for addressing the challenges involved in intrusion detection. The thesis will also discuss the obstacles and benefits of using Classification methods for network intrusion detection and the need for high-quality training data. To train and test our proposed method, the NSL-KDD dataset was used and then adjusted by converting it from a multi-classification to a binary classification, achieved by joining all attacks into one. …

Technology companies such as Facebook have long been criticized for abusing customers’ personal information and monetizing user data in a manner contrary to customer expectations. Some commentators suggest fiduciary law could be used to restrict how these companies use their customers’ data. Under this framework, a new member of the fiduciary family called the “information fiduciary” was born. The concept of an information fiduciary is that a company providing network services to “collect, analyze, use, sell, and distribute personal information” owes customers and end-users a fiduciary duty to use the collected data to promote their interests, thereby assuming fiduciary liability …

Climate change is a global phenomenon. Therefore, globalization is the necessary hermeneutical horizon to develop an analysis of the metamorphosis climate change could cause at a political, social, and economic level. Within this horizon, this Article shows how the relationship between the concept of the Anthropocene epoch and the request for justice allows for framing a climate-justice and intergenerational equity–focused political interpretation of the effects of climate change. In order to avoid reducing such an interpretation to merely an ideological critique of capitalism, the conception of climate justice needs to be grounded in a rational, ethical model. This Article proposes …
Estimation Of The Work Of Adhesion Between Ito And Polymer Substrates: A Surface Thermodynamics Approach, Sali̇h Özbay
Estimation Of The Work Of Adhesion Between Ito And Polymer Substrates: A Surface Thermodynamics Approach, Sali̇h Özbay
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Indium tin oxide (ITO) is one of the most widely used semiconductor among transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) due to their electrical conductivity and optical transparency properties. Since the development of low temperature deposition methods, coating of ITO on polymer substrates especially for use in flexible electronics has been a popular topic. The existence of adequate adhesion strength between ITO and polymer is critical in producing a successful film. Nowadays, polycarbonate (PC), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polyethyleneterephtalate (PET) are frequently used as substrates for such coatings. However, there may be other polymeric alternatives that have a potential to be used for …

In this study, syntheses of new pyrimidine-coupled N-ß-glucosides and tetra-O-acetyl derivatives were carried out. All glycoconjugates were investigated in comparison with known chemotherapeutic agents in terms of their antimicrobial and anticancer functions and DNA/protein binding affinities. Spectral data showed that all glycoside derivatives were obtained by diastereoselectivity as ß-anomers. Both tested groups exhibited strong antiproliferative activity (2.29?66.84 ?g/mL), but some of them had sufficiently ideal % cytotoxicity values (10.01%?16.78%). And also all synthetic compounds exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria. Binding of these compounds to CT-DNA resulted in significant changes in spectral properties, consistent with groove binding. Molecular …

Applying Machine Learning To Categorize Distinct Categories Of Network Traffic, Isaac M. Dunham
Applying Machine Learning To Categorize Distinct Categories Of Network Traffic, Isaac M. Dunham
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The recent rapid growth of the field of data science has made available to all fields opportunities to leverage machine learning. Computer network traffic classification has traditionally been performed using static, pre-written rules that are easily made ineffective if changes, legitimate or not, are made to the applications or protocols underlying a particular category of network traffic. This paper explores the problem of network traffic classification and analyzes the viability of having the process performed using a multitude of classical machine learning techniques against significant statistical similarities between classes of network traffic as opposed to traditional static traffic identifiers.

Q-Polymatroids And Their Application To Rank-Metric Codes., Benjamin Jany
Q-Polymatroids And Their Application To Rank-Metric Codes., Benjamin Jany
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Matroid theory was first introduced to generalize the notion of linear independence. Since its introduction, the theory has found many applications in various areas of mathematics including coding theory. In recent years, q-matroids, the q-analogue of matroids, were reintroduced and found to be closely related to the theory of linear vector rank metric codes. This relation was then generalized to q-polymatroids and linear matrix rank metric codes. This dissertation aims at developing the theory of q-(poly)matroid and its relation to the theory of rank metric codes. In a first part, we recall and establish preliminary results for both q-polymatroids and …

Novel Architectures And Optimization Algorithms For Training Neural Networks And Applications, Vasily I. Zadorozhnyy
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
The two main areas of Deep Learning are Unsupervised and Supervised Learning. Unsupervised Learning studies a class of data processing problems in which only descriptions of objects are known, without label information. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have become among the most widely used unsupervised neural net models. GAN combines two neural nets, generative and discriminative, that work simultaneously. We introduce a new family of discriminator loss functions that adopts a weighted sum of real and fake parts, which we call adaptive weighted loss functions. Using the gradient information, we can adaptively choose weights to train a discriminator in the direction …
Geometry Of Pipe Dream Complexes, Benjamin Reese
Geometry Of Pipe Dream Complexes, Benjamin Reese
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In this dissertation we study the geometry of pipe dream complexes with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of Schubert polynomials. Given a pipe dream complex PD(w) for w a permutation in the symmetric group, we show its boundary is Whitney stratified by the set of all pipe dream complexes PD(v) where v > w in the strong Bruhat order. For permutations w in the symmetric group on n elements, we introduce the pipe dream complex poset P(n). The dual of this graded poset naturally corresponds to the poset of strata associated to the Whitney stratification of the boundary of …

The Merchant And The Mathematician: Commerce And Accounting, Graziano Gentili, Luisa Simonutti, Daniele C. Struppa
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this article we describe the invention of double-entry bookkeeping (or partita doppiaas it was called in Italian), as a fertile intersection between mathematics and early commerce. We focus our attention on this seemingly simple technique that requires only minimal mathematical expertise, but whose discovery is clearly the result of a mathematical way of thinking, in order to make a conceptual point about the role of mathematics as the humus from which disciplines as different as operations research, computer science, and data science have evolved.

The Shortfalls Of Vulnerability Indexes For Public Health Decision-Making In The Face Of Emergent Crises: The Case Of Covid-19 Vaccine Uptake In Virginia, Lydia Cleveland Sa, Erika Frydenlund
VMASC Publications
Equitable and effective vaccine uptake is a key issue in addressing COVID-19. To achieve this, we must comprehensively characterize the context-specific socio-behavioral and structural determinants of vaccine uptake. However, to quickly focus public health interventions, state agencies and planners often rely on already existing indexes of "vulnerability." Many such "vulnerability indexes" exist and become benchmarks for targeting interventions in wide ranging scenarios, but they vary considerably in the factors and themes that they cover. Some are even uncritical of the use of the word "vulnerable," which should take on different meanings in different contexts. The objective of this study is …
Hydrologic Outcomes For Ecological Meadow Restoration In The Northern Sierra Nevada, Emma Sevier
Hydrologic Outcomes For Ecological Meadow Restoration In The Northern Sierra Nevada, Emma Sevier
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Ecologically functioning meadows provide critical ecosystem services including improving a catchment’s water yield, flood dispersion and attenuation, fostering groundwater-dependent ecosystems, and creating natural fire breaks (Loheide and Booth 2011). Degradation from past and current land use has resulted in incised channels that change the magnitude and timing of watershed and meadow fluxes and cause water table decline. Process-based restoration (PBR) is an approach which leverages fluvial processes to increase restoration efficiency. Though PBR is a promising tool to restore degraded meadow ecosystems, more studies are needed to understand its hydrologic outcomes and whether hydrodynamic modeling can be used as a …

Macrolichen diversity and community composition was determined for an area of high botanical interest in the Coast Ranges of Northern California – the Horse Mountain Botanical Area (HMBA) in Six Rivers National Forest. The Coast Ranges have been suggested to have high epiphytic macrolichen diversity, yet detailed site-specific macrolichen surveys are lacking for the area. Here we present comprehensive data on macrolichens of the HMBA integrated with environmental metadata at the landscape level. Twenty 0.4 ha sampling plots were positioned across the varying habitats of the HMBA and macrolichens were intensively sampled from all substrata. Out of 888 total collections, …

The Effects Of Post-Harvest Residue On Plantation Forest Soils And Early Growth Of Redwood And Douglas-Fir Seedlings In Humboldt County California, Robert W. Raibley
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Forest harvest residue (slash) usefulness has been up for debate among private timberland owners, public land managers, and the timber industry for decades. The disposal of slash, viewed as having low ecological value, has received considerable attention as wildfire risk has made burning it harder. In recent years, forest scientists and ecologists have recognized the importance of decaying wood and its relationship to forest growth and regeneration. At this site in Northern California, we looked at whether forest harvest residue enriches soil near slash windrows through soils coring and lab analyses, looking for primary limited nutrients nitrate (NO3-N) …
Food Waste Storage Gaseous Emissions Detection And Quantification Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Ryley A. Burton-Tauzer
Food Waste Storage Gaseous Emissions Detection And Quantification Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Ryley A. Burton-Tauzer
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
A growing interest in sustainable waste management and the implementation of new policies have prompted a shift towards alternative resource recovery methods for organic waste, including food waste. To effectively assess alternative food waste treatment scenarios, it is important to evaluate the life cycle impacts associated with each scenario. The storage phase of food waste, encompassing its accumulation in kitchens, and storage in bins for collection and transportation, has been overlooked as a source of greenhouse gases in previous studies. This investigation aimed to identify the greenhouse gases emitted during the initial five-day period of low-oxygen storage. An open dynamic …

In Northern California, the Karuk Tribe is feeling the effects of climate change on inadequate energy infrastructures leading to unreliable power supply. Improving energy reliability in a way that also increases energy sovereignty is necessary. Renewable energy microgrids have emerged as a pathway forward.
Modeling ownership structures and cash flows for different microgrid configurations can support the Tribe’s implementation of a microgrid in Orleans, CA that maximizes community benefits. This thesis considers a front-of-the-meter (FTM) and behind-the-meter (BTM) configuration, both approximately 2 MW solar PV and 3 MW/12 MWh battery energy storage. Cash flows including capital costs, operations and maintenance …
Occurrence Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In New Hampshire Biosolids, Katherine A. Wieck
Occurrence Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In New Hampshire Biosolids, Katherine A. Wieck
Honors Theses and Capstones
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of over 4,000 compounds used in the manufacturing of products including aqueous film forming foams for firefighting, stain repellents, waterproofing agents, and nonstick cookware since their initial development in the 1940s. The long fluorinated carbon chain structure of PFAS causes chemical and thermal stability, and thus resistance to biodegradation. Biosolids produced at wastewater facilities for uses such as agricultural land-applied compost and fertilizer for lawns and athletic fields, as well as sludge disposed in landfills can cause contamination of groundwater and surface water. This poses a significant threat to human and environmental …
Integrating The Spatial Pyramid Pooling Into 3d Convolutional Neural Networks For Cerebral Microbleeds Detection, Andre Accioly Veira
Integrating The Spatial Pyramid Pooling Into 3d Convolutional Neural Networks For Cerebral Microbleeds Detection, Andre Accioly Veira
CCE Theses and Dissertations
Cerebral microbleeds (CMB) are small foci of chronic blood products in brain tissues that are critical markers for cerebral amyloid angiopathy. CMB increases the risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke. CMB can also cause structural damage to brain tissues resulting in neurologic dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and dementia. Due to the paramagnetic properties of blood degradation products, CMB can be better visualized via susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).CMB identification and classification have been based mainly on human visual identification of SWI features via shape, size, and intensity information. However, manual interpretation can be biased. Visual screening …

A Study Of The Effect Of Types Of Organizational Culture On Information Security Procedural Countermeasures, Sheri James
CCE Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the impact of specific organizational cultures on information security procedural countermeasures (ISPC). With increasing security incidents and data breaches, organizations acknowledge that people are their greatest asset as well as a vulnerability. Previous research into information security procedural controls has centered on behavioral, cognitive, and social theories; some literature incorporates general notions of organization culture yet there is still an absence in socio-organizational studies dedicated to elucidating how information security policy (ISP) compliance can be augmented by implementing comprehensive security education, training, and awareness (SETA) programs focusing on education, training, and awareness initiatives.
A theoretical model was …
Adversarial Training Of Deep Neural Networks, Anabetsy Termini
Adversarial Training Of Deep Neural Networks, Anabetsy Termini
CCE Theses and Dissertations
Deep neural networks used for image classification are highly susceptible to adversarial attacks. The de facto method to increase adversarial robustness is to train neural networks with a mixture of adversarial images and unperturbed images. However, this method leads to robust overfitting, where the network primarily learns to recognize one specific type of attack used to generate the images while remaining vulnerable to others after training. In this dissertation, we performed a rigorous study to understand whether combinations of state of the art data augmentation methods with Stochastic Weight Averaging improve adversarial robustness and diminish adversarial overfitting across a wide …
An Investigation Of Methods For Improving Spatial Invariance Of Convolutional Neural Networks For Image Classification, David Noel
CCE Theses and Dissertations
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved impressive results on complex visual tasks such as image recognition. They are commonly assumed to be spatially invariant to small transformations of their input images. Spatial invariance is a fundamental property that characterizes how a model reacts to input transformations, i.e., its generalizability - and deep networks that can robustly classify objects placed in different orientations or lighting conditions have the property of invariance. However, several authors have recently shown that this is not the case, and that slight rotations, translations, or rescaling of their input images significantly reduce the network’s predictive accuracy. Furthermore, …

Using Drone Imagery To Map Intertidal Oyster Reefs Along Florida’S Gulf Of Mexico Coast, Michael Espriella, Vincent Lecours
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) reefs offer vital ecosystem services and support economically and culturally important fisheries. However, environmental and anthropogenic stressors have led to significant decline in oyster reef coverage globally and locally in places like the Suwannee Sound in Florida, USA. Current monitoring methods are insufficient for timely and accurate assessment of oyster resources in the region. Here we demonstrate how drone imagery can be used to delineate intertidal oyster reef coverage rapidly and reliably. The high spatial resolution offered by drone imagery enables accurate delineations. We use a segmentation algorithm to delineate reefs, which produces consistently …

Quantum Electrodynamics Of Dicke States: Resonant One-Photon Exchange Energy And Entangled Decay Rate, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Chandra M. Adhikari
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We calculate the fully retarded one-photon exchange interaction potential between electrically neutral, identical atoms, one of which is assumed to be in an excited state, by matching the scattering matrix (S matrix) element with the effective Hamiltonian. Based on the Feynman prescription, we obtain the imaginary part of the interaction energy. Our results lead to precise formulas for the distance-dependent enhancement and suppression of the decay rates of entangled superradiant and subradiant Dicke states (Bell states), as a function of the interatomic distance. The formulas include a long-range tail due to entanglement. We apply the result to an example calculation …

Pre-trained vision-language (V-L) models such as CLIP have shown excellent generalization ability to downstream tasks. However, they are sensitive to the choice of input text prompts and require careful selection of prompt templates to perform well. Inspired by the Natural Language Processing (NLP) literature, recent CLIP adaptation approaches learn prompts as the textual inputs to fine-tune CLIP for downstream tasks. We note that using prompting to adapt representations in a single branch of CLIP (language or vision) is sub-optimal since it does not allow the flexibility to dynamically adjust both representation spaces on a downstream task. In this work, we …
