PURPOSE: To develop and validate machine learning (ML) models to predict choroidal nevus transformation to melanoma based on multimodal imaging at initial presentation.

DESIGN: Retrospective multicenter study.

PARTICIPANTS: Patients diagnosed with choroidal nevus on the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital (2007-2017) or Mayo Clinic Rochester (2015-2023).

METHODS: Multimodal imaging was obtained, including fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence, spectral domain OCT, and B-scan ultrasonography. Machine learning models were created (XGBoost, LGBM, Random Forest, Extra Tree) and optimized for area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). INFOGRAZ is a prototype of a comprehensive relational database that describes the management of, and stores information from, grazing experiments in northern Australia associated with the wool, beef, and dairy industries. It provides permanent storage and public access for detailed measurements on climate, soil, plants, and animals, which are a valuable resource for future pasture scientists and computer modellers of grazing systems. One can determine the absolute model age of any planetary body in the solar system by compiling statistics about primary craters. However, secondary craters contaminate those statistics. Differentiating between primary craters—which are formed from an impact of an object from space onto a planetary surface—and secondary craters—which are formed from the fragments ejected from primaries—is an outstanding question in planetary science literature. No one characteristic can universally distinguish primaries from secondaries, and workers have developed numerous methods for sorting the two classes of craters. Neural Architecture Search (NAS) has significantly improved the accuracy of image classification and segmentation. However, these methods concentrate on finding segmentation structures for natural or medical applications. In this study, we introduce a NAS approach based on gradient optimization to identify ideal cell designs for road segmentation. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first application of gradient-based NAS to road extraction. The similar nature of the hydrogen atom to its isotope, deuterium, allows for the simple exchange of hydrogen atoms for deuterium atoms in drug molecules to alter the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion properties. Installing the deuterium functionality into a specific site in the molecule is essential. The energy exchange between ultracold, highly-excited, or Rydberg, atoms can be used to model quantum mechanical systems. When interpreting the results of these systems, it is important to know the density of the Rydberg atoms. In a recent experiment, we have studied several clusters of states that form a nearly harmonic ladder of clusters. The Rydberg atoms all start in one energy cluster, and the interactions between them allows energy to spread to all the other states. We have developed new analysis software along with a method in which a simple four-level system can calibrate the density for our experiment. …

In this paper, the multi-symplectic formulations of the two-component Camassa–Holm system are presented. Both the multi-symplectic structure and two local conservation laws of the generalized two-component Camassa–Holm model are proposed for its first-order canonical form. Then, combining the Fourier pseudo-spectral method in the spatial domain with the midpoint method in the time dimension, the multi-symplectic Fourier pseudo-spectral scheme is constructed for the first-order canonical form. Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory.   • Future climate presents conflicting implications for forest biomass. We evaluate how plant hydraulic traits, elevated CO2 levels, warming, and changes in precipitation affect forest primary productivity, evapotranspiration, and the risk of hydraulic failure.
  • We used a dynamic vegetation model with plant hydrodynamics (FATES-HYDRO) to simulate the stand-level responses to future climate changes in a wet tropical forest in Barro Colorado Island, Panama. We calibrated the model by selecting plant trait assemblages that performed well against observations. While COVID lockdown measures have had varying effects on the mental health of different demographics, several bodies of research have noted their disparate effect on women. Why is women's mental health more negatively impacted by lockdown measures, and how much more are they impacted than men? How can we predict and mitigate these negative effects on women? The uses of macrocyclic lanthanide complexes are vast, with many targeted MRI contrast agents at the forefront of the field. Many of these are ParaCEST agents, which require exchangeable protons accessible on the macrocycle and the slow exchange of coordinated water molecules. The substitution at both the α- and δ-carbon on the amide pendant arm of these macrocyclic lanthanide complexes can lock bulky groups on the δ-carbon to a pseudo-axial position. This paper aimed to determine the impact of faculty communication style, student proactiveness, and academic discipline on student academic performance and student-faculty relationship quality in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) higher education context. This study also aimed to contribute to the literature by verifying the mediating impact of communication effectiveness between the selected factors. Using a cross-sectional survey design, the study sample comprised 193 university students, and it was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are two major groups of PFAS will be subjected to the Maximal Contamination Concentration (MCL) of 4 ng/l in drinking water to be implemented by the U.S. EPA by 2025. How to accurately predict toxicity of PFAS with varied carbon chain length is important for treatment and sequential removal from drinking water. This study presents Quantitative Structure and Activity Relationship (QSAR) models developed through both linear regression and two order regression. The study of low-coordinate species and the pursuit of interesting bonding motifs has revealed new reactivity modes for main-group compounds, akin to transition metals, in the past two decades. An underexplored class of two-coordinate phosphorus compound is a phosphinidene sulfide, which has yet to be isolated in the solid-state with an accompanying crystal structure. This dissertation explores strategies towards the synthesis and reactivity of low-coordinate phosphinidene chalcogenide species, and related compounds supported by strongly pi-donating or weakly pi-donating environments. The goal of this work is to develop an asymptotic formula for the behavior of a scattered electromagnetic field in the presence of a thin metamaterial known as a metasurface. By using a carefully chosen Green’s function and the single and double layer potentials we analyze the perturbed scattering problem in the presence of the metamaterial and a background scattering problem. By using Lippman-Schwinger type representation formulas for the two fields we develop the asymptotic formula for the perturbed field. This thesis explores two areas in photonic quantum technology: polarization entanglement dynamics in optical fibers and low-light imaging. Optical fibers are the most suitable medium for photonic qubits and long-distance entanglement distribution is a critical requirement to realize quantum technologies. We study the decay of polarization-entanglement of the Bell state photons propagating through imperfect optical fibers with spatially fluctuating refractive index. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods are simulations that explore complex statistical distributions, while bypassing the cumbersome requirement of a specific analytical expression for the target. This stochastic exploration of an uncertain parameter space comes at the expense of a large number of ``burn-in'' samples, and the computational complexity leads to the curse of dimensionality. This study examined the power generation capabilities of FPV systems and the advantages of employing active cooling on floating solar panels. Floating solar panels exhibit improved efficiency due to operating at lower temperatures facilitated by the cooling effect of water evaporation. Additionally, the high availability of water renders the application of the active cooling technique economically viable. This study developed a comprehensive simulation of a floating solar system, integrating a mathematical model to validate experimental findings and a temperature model derived from an energy equation specific to floating solar panels.
