P-Adic Quantum Mechanics, The Dirac Equation, And The Violation Of Einstein Causality, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo Jul 2024

P-Adic Quantum Mechanics, The Dirac Equation, And The Violation Of Einstein Causality, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article studies the breaking of the Lorentz symmetry at the Planck length in quantum mechanics. We use three-dimensional ℘-adic vectors as position variables, while the time remains a real number. In this setting, the Planck length is 1/℘, where ℘ is a prime number, and the Lorentz symmetry is naturally broken. In the framework of the Dirac-von Neumann formalism for quantum mechanics, we introduce a new ℘-adic Dirac equation that predicts the existence of particles and antiparticles and charge conjugation like the standard one. The discreteness of the ℘-adic space imposes substantial restrictions on the solutions of the new …

Study The Global Earthquake Patterns That Follow The St. Patrick’S Day Geomagnetic Storms Of 2013 And 2015, Dimitar Ouzounov, Galina Khachikyan

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

A response of global seismic activity to the geomagnetic storms of St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) in 2013 and 2015 is investigated. These two storms occurred during nearly identical storm sudden commencement times and similar solar flux levels. We have revealed a rather similar pattern of the most substantial earthquakes that have occurred since these storms. Two major crust continental earthquakes, in Iran (M = 7.7), 16 April 2013, and in Nepal (M = 7.8), 25 April 2015, have occurred with a time delay of ~30 and ~39 days after geomagnetic storm onsets in 2013 and 2015, respectively. After that, …

Pfas Variation Through A Wastewater Treatment Facility Process, Aaron A. Fuzak, Chad J. Pritchard

2024 Symposium

PFAS concentrations were measured at a wastewater treatment facility to see the effect the treatment process had on PFAS levels. Samples were collected following an initial clarifier, second clarifier, sand filtration system, ultraviolet light purification system, and then from the effluent produced by the facility and analyzed using EPA Method 533. The effluent from the treatment facility flows from a pipe that enters a wetland, where it evaporates or infiltrates the groundwater. Municipal and septic treated systems are considered possible point sources for PFAS contamination in groundwater. Sampling levels of PFAS after treatment will give insight into the concentrations and …

Historical Structural Analysis Of The Rileyville Quadrangle, Page County, Virginia, Sydney Fergen Jul 2024

Historical Structural Analysis Of The Rileyville Quadrangle, Page County, Virginia, Sydney Fergen

2024 Symposium

The Northwest corner of Virginia, within the Appalachian Mountains, formed during a collision of continents called the Alleghenian Orogeny roughly 250 million years ago(Ma). This event caused tectonic plates to collide, reforming the fractured continental crust back into a new supercontinent, Pangaea. This process took over 100 Ma and closed the Rheic Ocean. These large-scale compressional tectonics had several effects including formation of the Allegheny Plateau and Taconic Mountain range, which has gradually eroded exposing a series of plunging folds and imbricated thrust faults. This poster presents a structural analysis of the Rileyville quadrangle to help decipher regional geologic history …

U/Pb Zircon Ages Of Saltese Upland Conservation Area, Priest River Core Complex, Jessica M. Lawrence, Natalie Potter, Chad Pritchard

2024 Symposium

The Saltese Upland Conservation Area provides a window into the Priest River Core Complex with Lake Hauser gneiss grading to migmatite, garnet-baring amphibolite juxtaposed with felsite to orthogneiss rocks. U/Pb ages from LA-ICP-MS of separated zircon grains show trends very similar to detrital 207Pb/206Pb ages of the Belt Supergroup. The amphibolite displays a much stronger peak at 1.4 to 1.5 Ga , possibly related to the emplacement of Mesoproterozoic dikes. The amphibolite and granitic rocks also contain a number of grains with 238U/206Pb around 60 Ma preserving events from the uplift of the Priest River Complex in the Spokane area. …

Paleohydraulic Analysis Of Megaripples From Outburst Floods In Omak, Washington, Jessica M. Lawrence Jul 2024

Paleohydraulic Analysis Of Megaripples From Outburst Floods In Omak, Washington, Jessica M. Lawrence

2024 Symposium

Located in Omak, Washington atop what is observed to be a gravel point bar are giant current ripples associated with outburst floods that took place during the Pleistocene (O’Connor et al. 2020 and Minard 1985). Thorough breakdown of these giant current ripples was conducted using their geomorphologies associated with stream flow mechanisms for gravel bedforms such as hydraulic radius of cross- sectional area and velocity using Manning’s equation to determine Froude’s Number (USDA 2007). Ripple index associated with ripple wavelength and height was then compared to additional megaripples located throughout Scablands of Washington that have been correlated to the Great …

Synthesis And Analysis Of Borazine Polymers, Kayla M. Besel

2024 Symposium

Plastics and polymers are incredibly useful and ubiquitous in our daily lives but they are incredibly persistent in the environment, killing more than 1.1 million seabirds and animals each year and the global production of plastic has doubled since 1950.1 A potential path to eliminate this problem is to create polymers that biodegrade or breakdown over time or in certain conditions. Three distinct degradable polymers were synthesized. The synthesis, characterization, and kinetics monitored by UV/Vis over a range of pH’s will be discussed.

Mass urbanization and transportation practices have resulted in high amounts of air pollution. Air pollution can have detrimental effects on human health causing respiratory issues as well as other health complications. Certain areas of cities experience more exposure to air pollution which can also cause them to have more health issues and lower life expectancy. These areas are often associated with disinvestment and minoritized communities of color. This research explores patterns of air quality related to environmental justice areas using low-cost wearable air quality monitoring sensors attached to a bicycle. Data was collected along the Lakefront Trail stretching from Irving …

A Seasonal Decomposition Comparison Between Forest And Turf Habitats: Implications For Climate Change, Amanda Shirmer Jul 2024

A Seasonal Decomposition Comparison Between Forest And Turf Habitats: Implications For Climate Change, Amanda Shirmer

DePaul Discoveries

Decomposition is an essential ecosystem service in which microorganisms breakdown organic matter. This process improves soil health and acts as a vital step in global carbon cycles. In this study, we examined decomposition rates and associated soil properties in turf and forest habitats across summer and fall seasons in order to determine how land management practices and climate change may be altering local decomposition regimes. Our study determined that there was a statistically significant difference between decomposition rates in turf and forest ecosystems (P=0.003) and a significant difference in decomposition rate across season (P

Postweaning Skull Growth In Living Didelphid Marsupials: The Case Of Gracilinanus Agilis And Cryptonanus Chacoensis, Iveth A. Villalobos Guerrero, Noé U. De La Sancha

DePaul Discoveries

Ontogeny is described as the history of an organism through its lifetime including development, growth, and allometry. The ontogenetic approach in cranial dimensions has proved useful in interpreting evolutionary patterns. Among the largest Didelphidae family of Neotropical marsupials, the species of Gracilinanus agilis and Cryptonanus chacoensis are poorly known. In this study, we address three questions; Is there sexual dimorphism in these species? What is the pattern of allometry? Which allometric patterns best describe the patterns in the skull and mandible? We applied geometric morphometrics to describe and test these differences using MorphoJ. A discriminant function analysis was performed to …

The Impacts Of Urbanization On Soil: The Effect On Decomposition Rates And Microbial Communities, Maximus C. Halekakis Jul 2024

The Impacts Of Urbanization On Soil: The Effect On Decomposition Rates And Microbial Communities, Maximus C. Halekakis

DePaul Discoveries

The anthropogenic impacts of industrialization have left many ecosystems polluted. Soil, being an imperative actor for ecosystem functions, is important to observe under anthropogenic change. My study examined soil organic matter decomposition, microbial biomass carbon(MBC) and the fungal to bacteria ratio(F:B) across an urban-suburban-exurban landuse gradient in San Luis Obispo, California. A cotton strip assay as well as microBIOMETER® testing was performed on three geographic locations in and outside of the city. The cotton strip decomposition acts as an indicator for organic matter breakdown as microorganisms break down the cellulose in the strips causing them to lose mass and tensile …

Disentangling Drivers Of Metacommunity Structure For Small Mammals Throughout Paraguay, William T. Szromba Jul 2024

Disentangling Drivers Of Metacommunity Structure For Small Mammals Throughout Paraguay, William T. Szromba

DePaul Discoveries

Paraguay is home to a unique precipitation gradient, receiving progressively more precipitation from east to west. It has previously been suggested that metacommunity structures for order Chiroptera assemble along precipitation gradients such as this one. Metacommunities have also been shown to assemble along other bioclimatic gradients such as temperature. This study seeks to expand upon other findings by using a larger dataset, partitioned bioclimatic variables, and more mammalian orders. It also seeks to determine how metacommunities assemble along this gradient in Paraguay, investigate the differences between different ecological metacommunity assemblages, and to further understand which bioclimatic variables have the greatest …

Increasing The B-Chromatic Number Of Complete Bipartites By Deleting Edges, Daniel Gawel Jul 2024

Increasing The B-Chromatic Number Of Complete Bipartites By Deleting Edges, Daniel Gawel

DePaul Discoveries

A b-coloring of a graph, G=V,E〉, is a proper coloring in which each color has at least one vertex that is adjacent to every other color. The b-chromatic number for G, denoted φ(G), is the largest number of colors you can use to make a b-coloring. For most graphs, φ(G), is around the m-index, an upper bound for φ(G) based on the graph's degree sequence. However, for the complete bipartite graph Km,n, φ(Km,n)=2 even though the m-index can be arbitrarily large. In this paper …

The B-Chromatic Number Of Super Cycles, Blair E. Johnson

DePaul Discoveries

The b-chromatic number, a characteristic studied in graph theory, was introduced less than 25 years ago, and while some statistics have been gathered of its properties, the b-chromatic number has yet to be explored in many graphs and circumstances. Before the Undergraduate Summer Research Program, I had no exposure to graph theory, let alone b-colorings. Throughout the program, I developed a fundamental understanding of the subject and began to pursue my own research inquiries. While this objective was difficult to attain at the beginning, I learned strategies and methods to hone my ability to delve into different graphs, and soon …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The future of conversational agents will provide users with personalized information responses. However, a significant challenge in developing models is the lack of large-scale dialogue datasets that span multiple sessions and reflect real-world user preferences. Previous approaches rely on experts in a wizard-of-oz setup that is difficult to scale, particularly for personalized tasks. Our method, LAPS, addresses this by using large language models (LLMs) to guide a single human worker in generating personalized dialogues. This method has proven to speed up the creation process and improve quality. LAPS can collect large-scale, human-written, multi-session, and multi-domain conversations, including extracting user preferences. …

Seed Mix Performance With Environmental Stressors And Invasion: Implications For Wetland Restoration, Maddie Houde, Karin Kettenring Jul 2024

Seed Mix Performance With Environmental Stressors And Invasion: Implications For Wetland Restoration, Maddie Houde, Karin Kettenring

Browse all Datasets

Seed-based revegetation is increasingly pursued in wetland restoration, but seed and seedling mortality is high and can be further limited by environmental stressors, like hydrology and salinity. The interactive effects of hydrology and salinity on native plants, especially in the presence of invasive plants, are less clear. In greenhouse and mesocosm experiments, we tested different hydrologic and salinity conditions on the growth of native seed mixes and Phragmites australis, a widespread wetland invader in North America. The greenhouse experiment tested two mixes (forb mix, graminoid mix), while mixes in the mesocosm experiment combined forbs and graminoids chosen for broad …

Designing Self-Management For And With Persons Living With Dementia Osullivan, Dympna, Dympna O'Sullivan, Michael Wilson, Damon Berry, Orla Moran, Siobhan O,Neill, Ciaran Nugent, Jonathan Turner, Julie Doyle

Articles

Promoting high quality of life for persons living with dementia has emerged as a central goal in global public health agendas. The emphasis has shifted from extending life to actively enhancing overall well-being by postponing or preventing additional disability. This represents a departure from traditional medical perspectives on dementia to a more socially-oriented approach, placing a strong focus on wellbeing.

In parallel, the concept of self-management for people with living dementia has emerged, where this is a person-centred approach in which the individual is empowered and has ownership over the management of their life and condition. Practice recommendations for person-centered …

Synoptic Drivers Of Extreme Precipitation In The Upper Yuba Watershed Of California, Emma Nichole Russell Jul 2024

Synoptic Drivers Of Extreme Precipitation In The Upper Yuba Watershed Of California, Emma Nichole Russell

Dissertations and Theses

The United States state of California is vulnerable to both droughts and extreme precipitation events due to the timing and processes of precipitation in the region. California's annual precipitation is dependent on a few strong storms and in addition to its Mediterranean climate, leads to great variability in precipitation both within and across years. While efforts to reduce the impacts of extreme precipitation events have been implemented, forecasting for these events remains a challenge in regions with complex terrain and dynamic meteorological drivers. In order to improve forecasting and preparedness for such events, it is important to understand the range …

The Growth Of Ethanol In Brazil: Sugarcane, Corn, And A Few Other Things, Fabio Mattos Jul 2024

The Growth Of Ethanol In Brazil: Sugarcane, Corn, And A Few Other Things, Fabio Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

Although we can expect more ethanol produced from corn in the coming years, it is unclear whether it will keep expanding at the same pace as in recent years or how much it will contribute to total ethanol production.

One point to keep an eye on is the typical dynamics of markets. If supply and demand conditions and price movements make corn-ethanol more profitable, ethanol plants in Brazil will keep increasing their production. If it makes more economic sense to produce corn-ethanol (as it happened recently), they will use more corn to produce ethanol.

Supply and demand conditions for ethanol, …

A Comparative Analysis Of Shap, Lime, Anchors, And Dice For Interpreting A Dense Neural Network In Credit Card Fraud Detection, Bujar Raufi, Ciaran Finnegan, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Financial institutions heavily rely on advanced Machine Learning algorithms to screen transactions. However, they face increasing pressure from regulators and the public to ensure AI accountability and transparency, particularly in credit card fraud detection. While ML technology has effectively detected fraudulent activity, the opacity of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) can make it challenging to explain decisions. This has prompted a recent push for more explainable fraud prevention tools. Although vendors claim to improve detection rates, integrating explanation data is still early. Data scientists recognize the potential of Explainable AI (XAI) techniques in fraud prevention, but comparative research on their effectiveness …

Gnss And Insar Observations Of Vertical Motion In The Valles Caldera, Nm, Savannah Chase Devine Jul 2024

Gnss And Insar Observations Of Vertical Motion In The Valles Caldera, Nm, Savannah Chase Devine

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Valles caldera is a rhyolitic “supervolcano” formed 1.231 Ma. An understanding of whether Valles caldera is currently deforming is needed to inform volcanic hazard estimates for northern New Mexico and will allow for a better understanding of the hazards presented by other rhyolitic caldera systems. Here, we present an InSAR time series of the Valles Caldera using 37 interferograms, spanning 2014 to 2022, which show a small but consistent signal of broad pattern subsidence/yr. We also present GNSS observations from a survey conducted in October 2022 and compare the results to surveys in 2002 and 2003 to estimate the …
