Number Representation With Varying Number Of Bits, Anuradha Choudhury, Md Ahsanul Haque, Saeefa Rubaiyet Nowmi, Ahmed Ann Noor Ryen, Sabrina Saika, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In a computer, usually, all real numbers are stored by using the same number of bits: usually, 8 bytes, i.e., 64 bits. This amount of bits enables us to represent numbers with high accuracy -- up to 19 decimal digits. However, in most cases -- whether we process measurement results or whether we process expert-generated membership degrees -- we do not need that accuracy, so most bits are wasted. To save space, it is therefore reasonable to consider representations with varying number of bits. This would save space used for representing numbers themselves, but we would also need to store …

Using Known Relation Between Quantities To Make Measurements More Accurate And More Reliable, Niklas Winnewisser, Felix Mett, Michael Beer, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2024

Using Known Relation Between Quantities To Make Measurements More Accurate And More Reliable, Niklas Winnewisser, Felix Mett, Michael Beer, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Most of our knowledge comes, ultimately, from measurements and from processing measurement results. In this, metrology is very valuable: it teaches us how to gauge the accuracy of the measurement results and of the results of data processing, and how to calibrate the measuring instruments so as to reach the maximum accuracy. However, traditional metrology mostly concentrates on individual measurements. In practice, often, there are also relations between the current values of different quantities. For example, there is usually an known upper bound on the difference between the values of the same quantity at close moments of time or at …

Optimal Selection And Investment-Allocation Decisions For Sustainable Supplier Development Practices, Chunguang Bai, Kannan Govindan, Dileep G. Dhavale Apr 2024

Optimal Selection And Investment-Allocation Decisions For Sustainable Supplier Development Practices, Chunguang Bai, Kannan Govindan, Dileep G. Dhavale

School of Business

Organization’s sustainability performance is influenced by its suppliers’ sustainability performance. This relationship makes sustainable supplier development a strategic competitive option for a buyer or focal organization. When considering sustainable supplier development practices (SSDPs) adoption, organizations have to balance and consider their limited financial resources and operational constraints. It becomes necessary to both select the best SSDPs set and investment allocation among the selected SSDP set such that the organization can maximize overall sustainability performance level. In this paper, an integrated formal modeling methodology using DEMATEL, the NK model, and multi-objective linear programming model is used support this objective. The proposed …

Exploring Practical Measures As An Approach For Measuring Elementary Students’ Attitudes Towards Computer Science, Umar Shehzad, Mimi M. Recker, Jody E. Clarke-Midura

Publications

This paper presents a novel approach for predicting the outcomes of elementary students’ participation in computer science (CS) instruction by using exit tickets, a type of practical measure, where students provide rapid feedback on their instructional experiences. Such feedback can help teachers to inform ongoing teaching and instructional practices. We fit a Structural Equation Model to examine whether students' perceptions of enjoyment, ease, and connections between mathematics and CS in an integrated lesson predicted their affective outcomes in self-efficacy, interest, and CS identity, collected in a pre- post- survey. We found that practical measures can validly measure student experiences.

Utah Lake is a large shallow eutrophic lake located in north central Utah. In recent years, the occurrence of frequent and sometimes toxic algal blooms has brought new urgency in understanding the cause and effects of eutrophication in Utah Lake. The drainage basin of Utah Lake is dominated by carbonate sedimentary materials and small pockets of phosphate rock occur. Given the bedrock geology and shallow nature of the lake, there has been uncertainty as to the natural trophic status and ecology of the lake prior to the settlement of Utah Valley. Thus, defining historical nutrient concentrations and sources in the …

The First Variational Formula, The Phase Space Of Solutions, And The Ostrogradsky Formalism, Matthew Pontius, Drew Watson

Physics Capstone Projects

We consider Lagrangians for classical mechanics which depend upon an arbitrary number of time derivatives of the configuration variables. From the boundary term in the first variation of the Lagrangian we derive the Ostrogradsky formulas which define the Hamiltonian formulation of mechanical systems.

Total Synthesis Of Rupestines H And I, Aimee Long, James Vyvyan Apr 2024

Total Synthesis Of Rupestines H And I, Aimee Long, James Vyvyan

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

The first total synthesis of rupestines H and I is reported. The two rupestines were synthesized in twelve steps from 6-methylpyridin-3-ol. The key step is an intramolecular Mizoroki-Heck cyclization, which forms the seven-membered carbocycle characteristic of the guaipyridine alkaloids. The rupestines are diastereomers which can be separated by preparative high performance liquid chromatography. Rupestines H and I, guaipyridine alkaloids isolated from Artemisia rupestris, are structurally similar to cananodine, which has activity against two hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines.

Miss Americana & The Queen Bey: A Seismic Analysis Of Synchronous Crowd Movement At Lumen Field Concerts In Seattle, Wa, Karenna A. Merritt

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

In this study, we provide supporting evidence for music fans – and their movement, specifically – as a source of seismic energy and low frequency noise. Data collected by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network was analyzed in the form of seismograms and spectrograms created through the ObsPy programming suite. After comparing two major concerts at Seattle’s Lumen Field, we found that consistent synchronous crowd motion contributed heavily to the generation of seismic energy at the stadium. Although seemingly frivolous in nature, concert seismicity can have civil and audio engineering implications that should be investigated in order to maximize both the …

Establishing Practical Equivalence Of Factor Loadings In Multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Christopher Edward Shank Apr 2024

Establishing Practical Equivalence Of Factor Loadings In Multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Christopher Edward Shank

Dissertations

This dissertation compares the performance of equivalence test (EQT) and null hypothesis test (NHT) procedures for identifying invariant and noninvariant factor loadings under a range of experimental manipulations. EQT is the statistically appropriate approach when the research goal is to find evidence of group similarity rather than group difference; despite this, the conventional approach to measurement invariance analysis relies upon NHT. EQT has proved effective for invariance detection using global model-data fit statistics in simulated and real-world data (Counsell et al., 2020) but its use in partial measurement invariance (PMI) analysis for evaluation of factor loading differences between groups has …

Molecular Geometry Changes In Some Carbonyls And Aromatic Rings Upon Electronic Excitation: Herzberg-Teller Vibronic Coupling And Unitary Duschinsky Rotation, Maryam Yahya Al-Sakkaf Apr 2024

Molecular Geometry Changes In Some Carbonyls And Aromatic Rings Upon Electronic Excitation: Herzberg-Teller Vibronic Coupling And Unitary Duschinsky Rotation, Maryam Yahya Al-Sakkaf

Theses

The common assumption in probing the dynamical motion of molecules is that the molecular electronic activity depends weakly on vibrational coordinates on electronic excitation. Therefore, electron-vibration interaction, which is known as Vibronic Coupling (VC), may be ignored. The Herzberg-Teller theory of Vibronic Coupling (HTVC) is a breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer Approximation (BOA) since nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom can no longer be separated. The inclusion of a single quantum of a non-totally symmetric vibrational mode changes the overall symmetry of the state and permits the transition. Often, this assumption may be invalid, especially in carbonyl and aromatic compounds. This …

Large Language Model For Vulnerability Detection: Emerging Results And Future Directions, Xin Zhou, Ting Zhang, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Previous learning-based vulnerability detection methods relied on either medium-sized pre-trained models or smaller neural networks from scratch. Recent advancements in Large Pre-Trained Language Models (LLMs) have showcased remarkable few-shot learning capabilities in various tasks. However, the effectiveness of LLMs in detecting software vulnerabilities is largely unexplored. This paper aims to bridge this gap by exploring how LLMs perform with various prompts, particularly focusing on two state-of-the-art LLMs: GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Our experimental results showed that GPT-3.5 achieves competitive performance with the prior state-of-the-art vulnerability detection approach and GPT-4 consistently outperformed the state-of-the-art.

Enhancing Source Code Representations For Deep Learning With Static Analysis, Xueting Guan, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep learning techniques applied to program analysis tasks such as code classification, summarization, and bug detection have seen widespread interest. Traditional approaches, however, treat programming source code as natural language text, which may neglect significant structural or semantic details. Additionally, most current methods of representing source code focus solely on the code, without considering beneficial additional context. This paper explores the integration of static analysis and additional context such as bug reports and design patterns into source code representations for deep learning models. We use the Abstract Syntax Tree-based Neural Network (ASTNN) method and augment it with additional context information …

Comparison Of Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization And Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry For The Direct Analysis Of Hops Bittering Compounds, Chhiring Sherpa

Masters Theses

Hops acids are essential components in the beer brewing process containing alpha acids (α-acids) and beta acids (β-acids) as the major hops bittering compounds. Quantifying these acids is vital for quality control and determining bitterness levels and hops variety profiles. Current industry standards, like High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) and Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), though effective, are time-consuming and solvent-intensive, providing incomplete information.

This research introduces a novel method using mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI-MS) to analyze hops bittering acids without chromatographic separations. This approach offers rapid analysis, high throughput, and eco-friendliness.

Comparison with direct electrospray …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Background: The United States is experiencing a direct support professional (DSP) crisis, with demand far exceeding supply. Although generating documentation is a critical responsibility, it is one of the most wearisome aspects of DSPs’ jobs. Technology that enables DSPs to log informal time-stamped notes throughout their shift could help reduce the burden of end-of-shift documentation and increase job satisfaction, which in turn could improve the quality of life of the individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) whom DSPs support. However, DSPs, with varied ages, levels of education, and comfort using technology, are not likely to adopt tools that detract …

Community Knowledge Of Shark Ecology, Abundance, And Species Composition In Wichubwala, Nalunega, And Porvenir Communities In The Guna Yala Comarca, Panamá, Kayley Jane Porter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Sharks play a critical role in marine ecosystems as apex predators that exert top-down control of lower trophic levels. In recent decades, global shark populations have declined to unprecedented levels, triggering a cascade effect that threatens ecosystem functioning and, therefore, coastal community livelihoods that rely on marine resources for food and income. It is known that shark populations are vulnerable and on the decline due to anthropogenic stressors such as fishing and coastal development, but shark species composition and abundance are difficult to monitor due to the evasive nature of sharks, the often remote and inaccessible location of certain shark …

The ''Lights Out!" Game On Threshold Graphs, Troy E. Conlay, Darren B. Parker Apr 2024

The ''Lights Out!" Game On Threshold Graphs, Troy E. Conlay, Darren B. Parker

McNair Scholars Manuscripts

The 'Lights Out' game was originally played on a 5x5 grid of buttons that started as either on or off. Pressing the buttons flips the state of the button pressed and the directly adjacent buttons, the goal being to have all of the lights out. We can play 'Lights Out' on a graph if we assign 0 or 1 to each of the vertices on the graph, analogous to on and off in the original game, and switch the labels of a vertex and its neighbors from 0 to 1 and vice versa when the vertex is toggled. This paper …

Integrating Drone And Satellite Imaging With Machine Learning For Green Stormwater Infrastructure Condition Assessments, Matthew Dupasquier Apr 2024

Integrating Drone And Satellite Imaging With Machine Learning For Green Stormwater Infrastructure Condition Assessments, Matthew Dupasquier

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) has been increasingly utilized to improve urban stormwater management strategies. However, the performance and utility of GSI decrease over time if the infrastructure is not properly maintained. In recent history, the intrinsic operations and maintenance costs associated with the complex networks of new infrastructure have placed a burden on municipalities, ultimately prohibiting many from reaching the full extent of their stormwater management goals. One way for cities to achieve cost savings is through automated monitoring that can quickly assess the condition of GSI assets; however, existing cost-effective technologies are limited. Drones and satellites may be able …

Paleozoic Evolution Of The Yukon-Tanana Terrane Of The North American Cordillera, Nw British Columbia, R. Soucy La Roche, A. Zagorevski, N. L. Joyce, J. L. Crowley

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The origins and primary relationships between tectono-stratigraphic units are fundamental to the terrane concept in accretionary orogens, but they are challenging to assess in metamorphic terranes. In NW British Columbia, three tectonically bounded metamorphic suites of the Yukon-Tanana terrane formed in distinct tectonic settings, based on high-spatial-resolution geochronology and immobile trace-element geochemistry. The Florence Range suite comprises late Neoproterozoic or younger to pre–latest Devonian metasedimentary rocks derived from continental crust, 360 ± 4 Ma calc-alkaline intermediate orthogneiss, and 357 ± 4 Ma amphibolite with oceanic-island basalt composition, consistent with rifting of a continental margin. The detrital signature is dominated by …
