College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Tuberculosis (TB)-causing bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) utilizes mycolic acids for building the mycobacterial cell wall, which is critical in providing defense against external factors and resisting antibiotic action. MmpL3 is a secondary resistance nodulation division transporter that facilitates the coupled transport of mycolic acid precursor into the periplasm using the proton motive force, thus making it an attractive drug target for TB infection. In 2019, X-ray crystal structures of MmpL3 from M. smegmatis were solved with a promising inhibitor SQ109, which showed promise against drug-resistant TB in Phase II clinical trials. Still, there is a pressing need to discover more …

Introduction: Stem cells can be used to treat diabetic mellitus and complications. ω3-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) derived lipid mediators are inflammation-resolving and protective. This study found novel DHA-derived 7S,14R-dihydroxy-4Z,8E,10Z,12E,16Z,19Z-docosahexaenoic acid (7S,14R-diHDHA), a maresin-1 stereoisomer biosynthesized by leukocytes and related enzymes. Moreover, 7S,14R-diHDHA can enhance mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) functions in the amelioration of diabetic mellitus and retinal pericyte loss in diabetic db/db mice. Methods: MSCs treated with 7S,14R-diHDHA were delivered into db/db mice i.v. every 5 days for 35 days. Results: Blood glucose levels in diabetic mice were lowered by 7S,14R-diHDHA-treated MSCs compared to control and untreated MSC groups, accompanied by …

In a recent paper, we extended a previous study on the solar solar influence to the generation of the March 2012 heatwave in the northeastern USA. In the present study we check the possible relationship of solar activity with the early March 2012 bad weather in northeast Thrace, Greece. To this end, we examined data from various remote sensing instrumentation monitoring the Sun (SDO satellite), Interplanetary space (ACE satellite), the Earth’s magnetosphere (Earth-based measurements, NOAA-19 satellite), the top of the clouds (Terra and Aqua satellites), and the near ground atmosphere. Our comparative data analysis suggests that: (i) the winter-like weather …
Spectralomics – Towards A Holistic Adaptation Of Label Free Spectroscopy, Hugh Byrne
Spectralomics – Towards A Holistic Adaptation Of Label Free Spectroscopy, Hugh Byrne
Articles
Vibrational spectroscopy, largely based on infrared absorption and Raman scattering techniques, is much vaunted as a label free approach, delivering a high content, holistic characterisation of a sample, with demonstrable applications in a broad range of fields, from process analytical technologies and preclinical drug screening, to disease diagnostics, therapeutics, prognostics and personalised medicine. However, in the analysis of such complex systems, a trend has emerged in which spectral analysis is reduced to the identification of individual peaks, based on reference tables of assignments derived from literature, which are then interpreted as biomarkers. More sophisticated analysis attempts to unmix the spectrum …

Reclaiming The Symbol: Ethics, Rhetoric, And The Humanistic Integration Of Gai - A Burkean Perspective, Daniel Plate, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study delves into the intersection of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and the Humanities, guided by the critical insights of Kenneth Burke, a seminal figure in the study of rhetoric and a vocal critic of scientism and positivism. The skepticism of the American literary theorist towards an uncritical embrace of science and technology, and his concerns over the inclination of the Humanities to adopt scientific methodologies at the expense of traditional forms of inquiry, provide a critical framework for examining the new role played by GAI within the Humanities. By framing these tools in the context of Burkean rhetorical theory, …

Drought Legacy Interacts With Wildfire To Alter Soil Microbial Communities In A Mediterranean Climate-Type Forest, Anna J. M. Hopkins, Aaron J. Brace, Jess L. Bruce, J. Hyde, J. B. Fontaine, L. Walden, W. Veber, K. X. Ruthrof
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Mediterranean forest ecosystems will be increasingly affected by hotter drought and more frequent and severe wildfire events in the future. However, little is known about the longer-term responses of these forests to multiple disturbances and the forests' capacity to maintain ecosystem function. This is particularly so for below-ground organisms, which have received less attention than those above-ground, despite their essential contributions to forest function. We investigated rhizosphere microbial communities in a resprouting Eucalyptus marginata forest, southwestern Australia, that had experienced a severe wildfire four years previously, and a hotter drought eight years previously. Our aim was to understand how microbial …
Difficulties Of Hydrofracturing In Sandstone – Experimental Study, S Vikram, Dheeraj Kumar, Ds Subrahmanyam
Difficulties Of Hydrofracturing In Sandstone – Experimental Study, S Vikram, Dheeraj Kumar, Ds Subrahmanyam
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Hydrofracturing in sandstone is not an easy task. Sandstone is porous; fluid dissipation is common hence unable to obtain breakdown pressures in certain flow rates (0.0000005–0.0001 m3/s). The higher flow rate (0.00025 m3/s) is ascertained to determine the fracturing pressures. Due to this, fracture propagation and delineation are observed [1]. To enhance, an experimental method is adopted by carrying out 6 Hydrofracturing tests in a borehole comprising sandstone. A high flow rate of 0.00025 m3/s and viscosity 0.001 Pascal second is applied. Later, the fracture simulation was run on 12 core samples collected from the same depths in a lab. …

The Effect Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Environmental Perceptions Of College Students, Sydney H. Kaylor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the environmental perception changes in college students during the COVID-19 pandemic were investigated. During the almost worldwide lockdown between March and December 2020, many students experienced dramatic changes in their socioeconomic life that have affected their well-being, ability to learn, and environmental perceptions. Students were sent home from college campuses, many businesses were shut down, and changes were seen in the environment throughout the world. The many industries and businesses that were shut down decreased the pollution that was in the atmosphere, in our water, and on the land. In many places, lockdown policies lead to improved …
Wang Tilings In Arbitrary Dimensions, Ian Tassin
Wang Tilings In Arbitrary Dimensions, Ian Tassin
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal
This paper makes a new observation about arbitrary dimensional Wang Tilings,
demonstrating that any d -dimensional tile set that can tile periodically along d − 1 axes must be able to tile periodically along all axes.
This work also summarizes work on Wang Tiles up to the present day, including
definitions for various aspects of Wang Tilings such as periodicity and the validity of a tiling. Additionally, we extend the familiar 2D definitions for Wang Tiles and associated properties into arbitrary dimensional spaces. While there has been previous discussion of arbitrary dimensional Wang Tiles in other works, it has been …

Algorithmic Design And Computational Modeling Using Dynamic Spectrum Allocation Techniques To Optimize Bandwidth Management In Wireless Communication Systems, Ankit Walishetti
Algorithmic Design And Computational Modeling Using Dynamic Spectrum Allocation Techniques To Optimize Bandwidth Management In Wireless Communication Systems, Ankit Walishetti
Distinguished Student Work
This study aims to address the pressing need for efficient spectrum management methodologies in wireless communication systems by developing innovative sorting and allocation algorithms. Leveraging Dynamic Spectrum Allocation (DSA) techniques, this research devises strategies to optimize the utilization of bandwidth within existing spectrum space, ultimately reducing the need for network infrastructure expansion.
Ensuring thorough coverage of DSA techniques, 5 distinct transmitter sorting algorithms were programmed and tested across 8 performance metrics designed to measure specific capabilities. For consistency, a single bandwidth allocation program was designed to ‘pack’ transmitters starting from the left endpoint of the spectrum space. Progressively varying the …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Carbon nanotube-encapsulated nickel selenide composite nanostructures were used as nonenzymatic electrochemical sensors for dopamine detection. These composite nanostructures were synthesized through a simple, one-step, and environmentally friendly chemical vapor deposition method, wherein the CNTs were formed in situ from pyrolysis of a carbon-rich metallo-organic precursor. The composition and morphology of these hybrid NiSe2-filled carbon nanostructures were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the as-synthesized hybrid nanostructures exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic performance toward dopamine oxidation, with a high sensitivity of 19.62 μA μM-1 cm-2, low detection limit, broad linear …

Combinatorial Results For Semigroups Of Orientation-Preserving Transformations, Ayşegül Dağdevi̇ren, Gonca Ayik
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Let Xn denote the chain {1, 2, . . . , n} under its natural order. We denote the semigroups consisting of all order-preserving transformations and all orientation-preserving transformations on Xn by On and OPn , respectively. We denote by E(U) the set of all idempotents of a subset U of a semigroup S . In this paper, we first determine the cardinalities of Er(On) = {α ∈ E(On) : |im(α)| = |fix(α)| = r}, E ∗ r (On) = {α ∈ Er(On) : 1, n ∈ fix(α)}, Er(OPn) = {α ∈ E(OPn) : |fix(α)| = r}, E ∗ r …

Langevin Delayed Equations With Prabhakar Derivatives Involving Two Generalized Fractional Distinct Orders, Mustafa Aydin
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper is devoted to defining the delayed analogue of the Mittag-Leffler type function with three parameters and investigating a representation of a solution to Langevin delayed equations with Prabhakar derivatives involving two generalized fractional distinct orders, which are first introduced and investigated, by means of the Laplace integral transform. It is verified by showing the solution satisfies the introduced system. Special cases which are also novel are presented as examples. The findings are illustrated with the help of the RLC circuits.

On The Oscillation And Asymptotic Behavior Of Solutions Of Third Order Nonlineardifferential Equations With Mixed Nonlinear Neutral Terms, Shaimaa Salem, Mohamed M. A. El-Sheikh, Ahmed Mohamed Hassan
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This paper is concerned with the oscillation and asymptotic behavior of solutions of third-order nonlinear neutral differential equations with a middle term and mixed nonlinear neutral terms in the case of the canonical operator. We establish several oscillation criteria that guarantee that all solutions are oscillatory or converge to zero. The given results are obtained by applying the comparison method, the Riccati transformation and the integral averaging technique. The results improve significantly and extend existing ones in the literature. Finally, illustrative examples are given.

Gelfand and Shilov give the definition of the composition δ(g(x)) for an infinitely differentiable function g(x) having any number of simple roots. In the paper, we consider their definition for an infinitely differentiable function having any number of multiple roots by using the method of the discarding of unwanted infinite quantities from asymptotic expansions and give some examples. Further, we define the compositions δ(g+) and δ(g−) for a locally summable function g(x).

Existence Of Solutions By Coincidence Degree Theory For Hadamard Fractionaldifferential Equations At Resonance, Martin Bohner, Alexander Domoshnitsky, Seshadev Padhi, Satyam Narayan Srivastava
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Using the coincidence degree theory of Mawhin and constructing appropriate operators, we investigate the existence of solutions to Hadamard fractional differential equations (FRDEs) at resonance { − (HDγu ) (t) = f(t, u(t)), t ∈ (1, e), u(1) = 0, u(e) = ∫ e 1 u(t)dA(t), where 1 < γ < 2, f : [1, e]×R2 → R satisfies Carathéodory conditions, ∫ e 1 u(t)dA(t) is the Riemann–Stieltjes integration, and (HDγu ) is the Hadamard fractional derivation of u of order γ . An example is included to illustrate our result.
Lightcone Framed Curves In The Lorentz-Minkowski 3-Space, Liang Chen, Masatomo Takahashi
Lightcone Framed Curves In The Lorentz-Minkowski 3-Space, Liang Chen, Masatomo Takahashi
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
For a nonlightlike nondegenerate regular curve, we have the arc-length parameter and the Frenet-Serret type formula by using a moving frame like a regular space curve in the Euclidean space. If a point of the curve moves between spacelike and timelike regions, then there is a lightlike point. In this paper, we consider mixed types of not only regular curves but also curves with singular points. In order to consider mixed type of curves with singular points, we introduce a frame, so-called the lightcone frame, and lightcone framed curves. We investigate differential geometric properties of lightcone framed curves.

In California (CA), the wildland-urban interface (WUI) faces escalating challenges due to surging population and real estate development. This study evaluates communities along CA's WUI that have witnessed substantial population growth from 2010 to 2021, utilizing demographic data and the 2020 WUI boundaries by the University of Wisconsin-Madison SILVIS Lab. Employing the Mann-Kendall test, we analyze yearly population trends for each census tract along the CA WUI and assess their significance. House ownership, affordability, and wildfire risk are examined as potential drivers of this demographic shift. Our findings indicate that 12.7% of CA's total population now resides in census tracts …

Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Our main aim in the current study is to examine the mathematical properties of a generalized 2-component Camassa-Holm system with a weakly dissipative term. Firstly, we acquire the theorem of well-posedness in locally for the generalized system with weak dissipation. Then, we demonstrate that this system can reveal the blow-up phenomenon. Finally, we acquire the theorem of global existence utilizing a method of the Lyapunov function.
