Tunable Magnetic Coupling In Graphene Nanoribbon Quantum Dots, Peter H. Jacobse, Mamun Sarker, Anshul Saxena, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Ziyi Wang, Emma Berger, Narayana R. Aluru, Alexander Sinitskii, Michael F. Crommie

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Carbon-based quantum dots (QDs) enable flexible manipulation of electronic behavior at the nanoscale, but controlling their magnetic properties requires atomically precise structural control. While magnetism is observed in organic molecules and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), GNR precursors enabling bottom-up fabrication of QDs with various spin ground states have not yet been reported. Here the development of a new GNR precursor that results in magnetic QD structures embedded in semiconducting GNRs is reported. Inserting one such molecule into the GNR backbone and graphitizing it results in a QD region hosting one unpaired electron. QDs composed of two precursor molecules exhibit nonmagnetic, antiferromagnetic, …

Path-Bigbird: An Ai-Driven Transformer Approach To Classification Of Cancer Pathology Reports, Mayanka Chandrashekar, Isaac Lyngaas, Heidi A. Hanson, Shang Gao, Xiao Cheng Wu, John Gounley

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

PURPOSE: Surgical pathology reports are critical for cancer diagnosis and management. To accurately extract information about tumor characteristics from pathology reports in near real time, we explore the impact of using domain-specific transformer models that understand cancer pathology reports. METHODS: We built a pathology transformer model, Path-BigBird, by using 2.7 million pathology reports from six SEER cancer registries. We then compare different variations of Path-BigBird with two less computationally intensive methods: Hierarchical Self-Attention Network (HiSAN) classification model and an off-the-shelf clinical transformer model (Clinical BigBird). We use five pathology information extraction tasks for evaluation: site, subsite, laterality, histology, and behavior. …

Extrasynaptic Localization Is Essential For Α5gabaa Receptor Modulation Of Dopamine System Function, Alexandra M. Mccoy, Thomas D. Prevot, Md Yeunus Mian, Dishary Sharmin, Adeeba N. Ahmad, James M. Cook, Etienne L. Sibille, Daniel J. Lodge

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dopamine system dysfunction, observed in animal models with psychosis-like symptomatology, can be restored by targeting gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) containing the α5, but not α1, subunit in the ventral hippocampus (vHipp). The reason for this discrepancy in efficacy remains elusive; however, one key difference is that gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors containing the α1 subunit (α1GABAARs) are primarily located in the synapse, whereas gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptors containing the α5 subunit (α5GABAARs) are mostly extrasynaptic. To test whether receptor location is responsible for this difference in efficacy, we injected an siRNA into the vHipp to knock down …

Optimizing Buying Strategies In Dominion, Nikolas A. Koutroulakis

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Dominion is a deck-building card game that simulates competing lords growing their kingdoms. Here we wish to optimize a strategy called Big Money by modeling the game as a Markov chain and utilizing the associated transition matrices to simulate the game. We provide additional analysis of a variation on this strategy known as Big Money Terminal Draw. Our results show that player's should prioritize buying provinces over improving their deck. Furthermore, we derive heuristics to guide a player's decision making for a Big Money Terminal Draw Deck. In particular, we show that buying a second Smithy is always more optimal …

A Canonical Transformation For The Anderson Lattice Hamiltonian With F–F Electron Coupling, Guang-Lin Zhao Feb 2024

A Canonical Transformation For The Anderson Lattice Hamiltonian With F–F Electron Coupling, Guang-Lin Zhao

Faculty Publications

In this work, a new canonical transformation for the Anderson lattice Hamiltonian with f–f electron coupling was developed, which was further used to identify a new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian. Different from the single impurity Kondo effect, the resulted new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian only includes the spin-flip scattering processes between conduction electrons and f-electrons, while the normal process of non-spin-flip scattering is absent in this Hamiltonian, under the second order approximation. The new Kondo lattice Hamiltonian may be used to study some anomalous physical properties in some Kondo lattice intermetallic compounds.

Finite Element Solution Of Crack-Tip Fields For An Elastic Porous Solid With Density-Dependent Material Moduli And Preferential Stiffness, Hyun C. Yoon, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah, Dambaru Bhatta

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, the finite element solutions of crack-tip fields for an elastic porous solid with density-dependent material moduli are presented. Unlike the classical linearized case in which material parameters are globally constant under a small strain regime, the stiffness of the model presented in this paper can depend upon the density with a modeling parameter. The proposed constitutive relationship appears linear in the Cauchy stress and linearized strain independently. From a subclass of the implicit constitutive relation, the governing equation is bestowed via the balance of linear momentum, resulting in a quasi-linear partial differential equation (PDE) system. Using the …

We present the first deep X-ray observations of luminous fast blue optical transient (LFBOT) AT 2018cow at ∼3.7 yr since discovery, together with the reanalysis of the observation at δt ∼ 220 days. X-ray emission is significantly detected at a location consistent with AT 2018cow. The very soft X-ray spectrum and sustained luminosity are distinct from the spectral and temporal behavior of the LFBOT in the first ∼100 days and would possibly signal the emergence of a new emission component, although a robust association with AT 2018cow can only be claimed at δt ∼ 220 days, while at …

Exploration And Exploitation Of Deep Coalbed Methane In The Baijiahai Uplift, Junggar Basin: Progress And Its Implications, Lan Hao, Yang Zhaobiao, Chou Peng, Wang Bin, Liu Changqing, Liang Yuhui, Wang Yuqiang

Coal Geology & Exploration

The Jurassic coals in the Baijiahai uplift, with breakthroughs made in the deep coalbed methane (CBM) production of vertical wells in the early stage in China, serve as an important exploration target of the Junggar Basin. Their coal reservoirs feature an ultra-low ash content, a low moisture content, medium-to-high volatility, and favorable porosity and permeability systems. With gas accumulation modes, namely, the paleo-source and young-reservoir made and the self-source and self-reservoir mode, the coal seams enjoy favorable gas-bearing properties, such as a high gas content, a high proportion of free gas, and high gas saturation, which establish them as high-quality …

Deep Coalbed Methane Production Technology For The Eastern Margin Of The Ordos Basin: Advances And Their Implications, Zeng Wenting, Xu Fengyin, Zhang Lei, Sun Weiwei, Wang Qian, Liu Yinhua, Yu Lizhu, Ji Liang, Zeng Quanshu, Zhang Kang

Coal Geology & Exploration

Contrasting with shallow to moderately deep coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs, deep CBM reservoirs exhibit favorable coal structures, high formation pressure, high free gas ratios, and high contents of total dissolved solids (TDS) and CO2. Extensive fracturing allows for CBM flowing at the initial stage, while the production parameters vary significantly throughout the CBM production. This requires wide technological boundaries of the main production technologies. Compared to shale gas and tight gas, deep CBM manifests different production mechanisms and relatively low free gas ratios, which lead to short flowing cycles of CBM. This necessitates timely water withdrawal for CBM …
