The Distribution Of The Significance Level, Paul O. Monnu Jan 2024

The Distribution Of The Significance Level, Paul O. Monnu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reporting the p-value is customary when conducting a test of hypothesis or significance. The likelihood of getting a fictitious second sample and presuming the null hypothesis is correct is the p-value. The significance level is a statistic that interests us to investigate. Being a statistic, it has a distribution. For the F-test in a one-way ANOVA and the t-tests for population means, we define the significance level, its observed value, and the observed significance level. It is possible to derive the significance level distribution. The t-test and the F-test are not without controversy. Specifically, we demonstrate that as sample size …

Bringing Gans To Medieval Times: Manuscript Translation Models, Tonilynn M. Holtz Jan 2024

Bringing Gans To Medieval Times: Manuscript Translation Models, Tonilynn M. Holtz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) recently emerged as a powerful framework for producing new knowledge from existing knowledge. These models aim to learn patterns from input data then use that knowledge to generate output data samples that plausibly appear to belong to the same set as the input data. Medieval manuscripts study has been an important research area in the humanities field for many decades. These rare manuscripts are often times inaccessible to the general public, including students in scholars, and it is of a great interest to provide digital support (including, but not limited to translation and search) for …

Simulation Of Wave Propagation In Granular Particles Using A Discrete Element Model, Syed Tahmid Hussan Jan 2024

Simulation Of Wave Propagation In Granular Particles Using A Discrete Element Model, Syed Tahmid Hussan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The understanding of Bender Element mechanism and utilization of Particle Flow Code (PFC) to simulate the seismic wave behavior is important to test the dynamic behavior of soil particles. Both discrete and finite element methods can be used to simulate wave behavior. However, Discrete Element Method (DEM) is mostly suitable, as the micro scaled soil particle cannot be fully considered as continuous specimen like a piece of rod or aluminum. Recently DEM has been widely used to study mechanical properties of soils at particle level considering the particles as balls. This study represents a comparative analysis of Voigt and Best …

Enumeration Of Lattice Paths With Restrictions, Vince White Jan 2024

Enumeration Of Lattice Paths With Restrictions, Vince White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lattice path enumeration, through the lens of Catalan numbers, plays a crucial role in combinatorics. This thesis delves into enumerations of some of the most common lattice paths – north-east paths, up-down paths, and Dyck paths – with restrictions applied. The first restriction is counting north-east lattice paths that only cross the diagonal line, y=x, once. The second form of lattice paths with restrictions is up-down paths that cross the x-axis exactly once and fall to a fixed depth of k. While working through this module, a novel proof for a known integer sequence was used, then applied to generate …

Advanced Mathematical Graph-Based Machine Learning And Deep Learning Models For Drug Design, Farjana Tasnim Mukta

Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics

Drug discovery is a highly complicated and time-consuming process. One of the main challenges in drug development is predicting whether a drug-like molecule will interact with a specific target protein. This prediction accelerates target validation and drug development. Recent research in biomolecular sciences has shown significant interest in algebraic graph-based models for representing molecular complexes and predicting drug-target binding affinity. In this thesis, we present algebraic graph-based molecular representations to create data-driven scoring functions (SF) using extended atom types to capture wide-range interactions between targets and drug candidates. Our model employs multiscale weighted colored subgraphs for the protein-ligand complex, colored …

Wave Energy Converter Wave Force Prediction Using A Neural Network, Morgan Kline

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Due to the unpredictable nature of large bodies of water, wave energy can be a difficult renewable resource to rely on. One way to make Wave Energy Converters (WECs) more efficient is to apply a control strategy. In many control solutions, it is assumed that the wave excitation force is known into the future. In many instances, especially with complex waveforms, this is simply not the case. Simulation studies have shown the promise of wave force prediction using neural networks. This study demonstrates this experimentally and aims to characterize the important factors when designing such a network. Several wave elevation …

Molecular Understanding And Design Of Deep Eutectic Solvents And Proteins Using Computer Simulations And Machine Learning, Usman Lame Abbas

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as excellent extractants. A major challenge is the lack of an efficient tool to discover DES candidates. Currently, the search relies heavily on the researchers’ intuition or a trial-and-error process, which leads to a low success rate or bypassing of promising candidates. DES performance depends on the heterogeneous hydrogen bond environment formed by multiple hydrogen bond donors and acceptors. Understanding this heterogeneous hydrogen bond environment can help develop principles for designing high performance DESs for extraction and other separation applications. This work investigates the structure and dynamics of hydrogen bonds in hydrophobic DESs …
