Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While Deep Neural Network (DNN) models have transformed machine vision capabilities, their extremely high computational complexity and model sizes present a formidable deployment roadblock for AIoT applications. We show that the complexity-vs-accuracy-vs-communication tradeoffs for such DNN models can be significantly addressed via a novel, lightweight form of “collaborative machine intelligence” that requires only runtime changes to the inference process. In our proposed approach, called ComAI, the DNN pipelines of different vision sensors share intermediate processing state with one another, effectively providing hints about objects located within their mutually-overlapping Field-of-Views (FoVs). CoMAI uses two novel techniques: (a) a secondary shallow ML …

Energy-Based Latent Aligner For Incremental Learning, K.J. Joseph, Salman Khan, Fahad Shahbaz Khan, Rao Muhammad Anwer, Vineeth N. Balasubramanian

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Deep learning models tend to forget their earlier knowledge while incrementally learning new tasks. This behavior emerges because the parameter updates optimized for the new tasks may not align well with the updates suitable for older tasks. The resulting latent representation mismatch causes forgetting. In this work, we propose ELI: Energy-based Latent Aligner for Incremental Learning, which first learns an energy manifold for the latent representations such that previous task latents will have low energy and the current task latents have high energy values. This learned manifold is used to counter the representational shift that happens during incremental learning. The …

A Deep Learning-Based Approach To Extraction Of Filler Morphology In Sem Images With The Application Of Automated Quality Inspection, Md. Fashiar Rahman, Tzu-Liang Bill Tseng, Jianguo Wu, Yuxin Wen, Yirong Lin

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Automatic extraction of filler morphology (size, orientation, and spatial distribution) in Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images is essential in many applications such as automatic quality inspection in composite manufacturing. Extraction of filler morphology greatly depends on accurate segmentation of fillers (fibers and particles), which is a challenging task due to the overlap of fibers and particles and their obscure presence in SEM images. Convolution Neural Networks (CNNs) have been shown to be very effective at object recognition in digital images. This paper proposes an automatic filler detection system in SEM images, utilizing a Mask Region-based CNN architecture. The proposed system …

Use of online social networks (OSNs) undoubtedly brings the world closer. OSNs like Twitter provide a space for expressing one’s opinions in a public platform. This great potential is misused by the creation of bot accounts, which spread fake news and manipulate opinions. Hence, distinguishing genuine human accounts from bot accounts has become a pressing issue for researchers. In this paper, we propose a framework based on deep learning to classify Twitter accounts as either ‘human’ or ‘bot.’ We use the information from user profile metadata of the Twitter account like description, follower count and tweet count. We name the …

Considerations For Radio Frequency Fingerprinting Across Multiple Frequency Channels, Jose A. Gutierrez Del Arroyo, Brett J. Borghetti, Michael A. Temple

Faculty Publications

Radio Frequency Fingerprinting (RFF) is often proposed as an authentication mechanism for wireless device security, but application of existing techniques in multi-channel scenarios is limited because prior models were created and evaluated using bursts from a single frequency channel without considering the effects of multi-channel operation. Our research evaluated the multi-channel performance of four single-channel models with increasing complexity, to include a simple discriminant analysis model and three neural networks. Performance characterization using the multi-class Matthews Correlation Coefficient (MCC) revealed that using frequency channels other than those used to train the models can lead to a deterioration in performance from …

Generalized Robust Feature Selection, Bradford L. Lott Mar 2022

Generalized Robust Feature Selection, Bradford L. Lott

Theses and Dissertations

Feature selection may be summarized as identifying salient features to a given response. Understanding which features affect the response enables, in the future, only collecting consequential data; hence, the feature selection algorithm may lead to saving effort spent collecting data, storage resources, as well as computational resources for making predictions. We propose a generalized approach to select the salient features of data sets. Our approach may also be applied to unsupervised datasets to understand which data streams provide unique information. We contend our approach identifies salient features robust to the sub-sequent predictive model applied. The proposed algorithm considers all provided …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, there is an emerging trend to apply deep reinforcement learning to solve the vehicle routing problem (VRP), where a learnt policy governs the selection of next node for visiting. However, existing methods could not handle well the pairing and precedence relationships in the pickup and delivery problem (PDP), which is a representative variant of VRP. To address this challenging issue, we leverage a novel neural network integrated with a heterogeneous attention mechanism to empower the policy in deep reinforcement learning to automatically select the nodes. In particular, the heterogeneous attention mechanism specifically prescribes attentions for each role of the …

Since EEG signal acquisition is non-invasive and portable, it is convenient to be used for different applications. Recognizing emotions based on Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is an important active BCI paradigm for recognizing the inner state of persons. There are extensive studies about emotion recognition, most of which heavily rely on staged complex handcrafted EEG feature extraction and classifier design. In this paper, we propose a hybrid multi-input deep model with convolution neural networks (CNNs) and bidirectional Long Short-term Memory (Bi-LSTM). CNNs extract time-invariant features from raw EEG data, and Bi-LSTM allows long-range lateral interactions between features. First, we propose a …

Cocoa: Context-Conditional Adaptation For Recognizing Unseen Classes In Unseen Domains, Puneet Mangla, Shivam Chandhok, Vineeth N. Balasubramanian, Fahad Shahbaz Khan

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Recent progress towards designing models that can generalize to unseen domains (i.e domain generalization) or unseen classes (i.e zero-shot learning) has embarked interest towards building models that can tackle both domain-shift and semantic shift simultaneously (i.e zero-shot domain generalization). For models to generalize to unseen classes in unseen domains, it is crucial to learn feature representation that preserves class-level (domain-invariant) as well as domain-specific information. Motivated from the success of generative zero-shot approaches, we propose a feature generative framework integrated with a COntext COnditional Adaptive (COCOA) Batch-Normalization layer to seamlessly integrate class-level semantic and domain-specific information. The generated visual features …

Jamming Detection And Classification In Ofdm-Based Uavs Via Feature- And Spectrogram-Tailored Machine Learning, Y. Li, J. Pawlak, J. Price, K. Al Shamaileh, Q. Niyaz, S. Paheding, V. Devabhaktuni

Michigan Tech Publications

In this paper, a machine learning (ML) approach is proposed to detect and classify jamming attacks against orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receivers with applications to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Using software-defined radio (SDR), four types of jamming attacks; namely, barrage, protocol-aware, single-tone, and successive-pulse are launched and investigated. Each type is qualitatively evaluated considering jamming range, launch complexity, and attack severity. Then, a systematic testing procedure is established by placing an SDR in the vicinity of a UAV (i.e., drone) to extract radiometric features before and after a jamming attack is launched. Numeric features that include signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), …

Ordered Weighted Averaging (Owa), Decision Making Under Uncertainty, And Deep Learning: How Is This All Related?, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Among many research areas to which Ron Yager contributed are decision making under uncertainty (in particular, under interval and fuzzy uncertainty) and aggregation -- where he proposed, analyzed, and utilized ordered weighted averaging (OWA). The OWA algorithm itself provides only a specific type of data aggregation. However, it turns out that if we allow several OWA stages, one after another, we obtain a scheme with a universal approximation property -- moreover, a scheme which is perfectly equivalent to modern ReLU-based deep neural networks. In this sense, Ron Yager can be viewed as a (grand)father of ReLU-based deep learning. We also …

Deep Graph-Level Anomaly Detection By Glocal Knowledge Distillation, Rongrong Ma, Guansong Pang, Ling Chen, Anton Van Den Hengel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph-level anomaly detection (GAD) describes the problem of detecting graphs that are abnormal in their structure and/or the features of their nodes, as compared to other graphs. One of the challenges in GAD is to devise graph representations that enable the detection of both locally- and globally-anomalous graphs, i.e., graphs that are abnormal in their fine-grained (node-level) or holistic (graph-level) properties, respectively. To tackle this challenge we introduce a novel deep anomaly detection approach for GAD that learns rich global and local normal pattern information by joint random distillation of graph and node representations. The random distillation is achieved by …
