Nothing Succeeds Like Succession: Ecology And The Human Lot, James A. Macmahon May 1983

Nothing Succeeds Like Succession: Ecology And The Human Lot, James A. Macmahon

Faculty Honor Lectures

An Honor Lecture provides a rare opportunity for me as a scientist. First, I have the chance to share, and in a sense to justify, my chosen and cherished discipline, ecology, before an eclectic audience. Second, I have a reason to consider my profession in a broader perspective than I normally do, given the pressures of day-to-day teaching, of grantsmanship, and of acting the role of stern taskmaster to my graduate students. I relish the opportunity to dabble, with an ecological perspective, in history, in philosophy, and in other areas. First, I will discuss my discipline in the context of …

New Sources of Water for Energy Development and Growth: Interbasin Transfers: A Short Course (Summer Conference, June 7-10)

Even before the [Natural Resources Law] Center was established [in the fall of 1981], the [University of Colorado] School of Law was organizing annual natural resources law summer short courses. To date four programs have been presented:

- July 1980: "Federal Lands, Laws and Policies-and the Development of Natural Resources"

- June 1981: "Water Resources Allocation: Laws and Emerging Issues"

- June 1982: "New Sources of Water for Energy Development and Growth: lnterbasin Transfers"

- June 1983: "Groundwater: Allocation; Development and Pollution"

An Evaluation Of Nutrient Sources To Onslow Bay, North Carolina, Larry P. Atkinson, Leonard J. Pietrafesa, Eileen E. Hofmann Jan 1982

An Evaluation Of Nutrient Sources To Onslow Bay, North Carolina, Larry P. Atkinson, Leonard J. Pietrafesa, Eileen E. Hofmann

CCPO Publications

Hydrographic and current meter data from Onslow Bay, North Carolina, were examined to determine the relative importance of various nutrient sources.

Upwelled Gulf Stream water is the major source of nutrients while rivers represent a minor, if not insignificant, source. In the summer during stratified conditions, the upwelled water penetrates across the shelf, but in the winter the upwelled water is restricted to the outer shelf. Nitrate flux across the 40 m isobath was calculated from continuous temperature and current records. Flux during the summer of 1976 was 2 μM m2 sec-1 which is considerably less than flux …

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project At Dickey, Maine : Final Environmental Statement, New England Division, United States Army Engineer Division

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

This document contains those comments and responses on the Revised Draft Environmental Impact Statement. It is a continuation of Volume II published by the Corps in 1978. In addition, it contains reproductions of those letters of comment received on the March 1980 Draft Fish and Wildlife Mitigation Plan, and the responses to these comments.

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project At Dickey, Maine : Final Environmental Statement, Volume 1-4, U. S. Army Engineer Division, New England

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

The proposed Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project in northern Maine is a multipurpose installation on the St.John River. The combination hydroelectric power and flood control project is located in Aroostook County, Maine, near the Canadian border. The two proposed earth fill dams located at Dickey are 10,200 feet in length with a maximum height of 335 feet. They would impound 7.7 million acre feet of water at a maximum pool elevation 910 feet mean sea level. A second earth filled dam located 11 miles downstream at Lincoln School would serve as a regulatory dam. It would be 2100 feet in lenqth, …

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project At Dickey, Maine : Draft Supplement Environmental Impact Statement, U.S. Army Engineer Division, New England Division

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

The purpose of this Draft Supplement (SDEIS) to the Revised Draft Environmental Impact Statement (RDEIS) is to evaluate the environmental impacts of the Fish and Wildlife Mitigation Plan proposed for Implementation in conjunction with development of the Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project, Maine (Appendix K, RDEIS and Attachment 1 of the Report). Although the mitigation plan is intended to mitigate rather than impose adverse environmental impacts, the mitigation measures proposed do constitute a major Federal action requiring the development of a supplemental environmental impact statement pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969.

Forest, Animal, And Seasonal Cycles Observed In Vernal Ponds At Audubon Center, Michael Link Jan 1980

Forest, Animal, And Seasonal Cycles Observed In Vernal Ponds At Audubon Center, Michael Link

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Observations of environmental conditions and biota in four depressed spots, called "vernal ponds", within the Northwoods Audubon Center near Sandstone, Minnesota, are reported for the period March 15 to September 4, 1977. Life cycle dynamics and utilization of the pond areas are considered in relation to time, days of the month, moisture-dryness, and species; but are lumped together for reporting as if the four locations were a single pond entity. Hypotheses as to the role of these ponds in the surrounding ecosystem and questions for possible further investigation are suggested.
