Shoreline Evolution: Charles City County, Virginia, Donna A. Milligan, Christine Wilcox, C. Scott Hardaway Jr.
Shoreline Evolution: Charles City County, Virginia, Donna A. Milligan, Christine Wilcox, C. Scott Hardaway Jr.
Reports
Charles City County is situated along the upper reaches of the James River (Figure 1). Because the County’s shoreline is continually changing, determining where the shoreline was in the past, how far and how fast it is moving, and what factors drive shoreline change will help define where the shoreline will be going in the future. These rates and patterns of shore change along Chesapeake Bay’s estuarine shores will differ through time as winds, waves, tides and currents shape and modify coastlines by eroding, transporting and depositing sediments. The purpose of this report is to document how the shore zone …

At The Confluence Of Gis And Geochemistry: Identifying Geochemical Correlates Of Ripley Engraved Caddo Ceramics, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula
CRHR: Archaeology
In this poster, we discuss a new approach to the identification and definition of spatial trends in archeologically-recovered ceramics associated with geochemical results produced using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Using all of the Ripley Engraved INAA samples, we posit that clays in the Claiborne and Wilcox Groups can be successfully demarcated by sodium (Na), cerium (Ce), and zinc (Zn). Using a subset of those data from the Big Cypress Creek basin, we find that ceramics manufactured in three different Caddo political communities can be successfully demarcated based upon differential concentrations of arsenic (As), iron (Fe), and vanadium (V) found …

Data
The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Inventory is based on a three tiered shoreline assessment approach. This assessment characterizes conditions that can be observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline or by using observations made remotely at the desktop using high resolution imagery. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions:
1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes.

Data
The 2014 Tidal Marsh Inventory update for the City of Newport News, Virginia was generated using on-screen digitizing techniques in the most recent version of ArcGIS® - ArcMap while viewing conditions observed in the most recent imagery from the Virginia Base Mapping Program (VBMP). Dominant plant community types were primarily determined during field surveys from shallow-draft boats moving along the shoreline. Land-based surveys were performed in some locations. One shapefile is developed that portrays tidal marsh areas represented as polygons. A metadata file accompanies the shapefile to define attribute accuracy, data development, and any use restrictions that pertain to the …

Teaching Climate Literacy Using Geospatial Tools, Steven L. Babcock
Teaching Climate Literacy Using Geospatial Tools, Steven L. Babcock
LSU Master's Theses
Antarctica is the world’s coldest, driest and windiest continent. It is a harsh environment that few people will ever see but it is a very important part of our Earth system. Over the past 34 million years the climate in Antarctica has deteriorated from one that supported lush vegetation to the conditions observed today. By studying this trend and the associated changes to ice and vegetation we can gain critical insight into climate changes taking place today. This thesis presents three pieces of curricula that will help students and the general public understand some of the research currently underway in …

The Utility Of Vulnerability Maps And Gis In Groundwater Management: A Case Study, Muhterem Demi̇roğlu, John Dowd
The Utility Of Vulnerability Maps And Gis In Groundwater Management: A Case Study, Muhterem Demi̇roğlu, John Dowd
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Groundwater supplies are experiencing a critical shortage in arid and semiarid regions, as population growth, and hence demand, is not matched by the development of new water supplies. Groundwater is often the only water source in these areas, making the preservation of groundwater quality a critical issue. Powerful tools for groundwater protection are vulnerability maps, which can be used to identify protection zones. A number of factors influence aquifer vulnerability, including geology, geography, land use, and commercial and industrial development. These factors often display a complex spatial pattern easily addressed with GIS. Each factor is entered in the GIS as …

Alteration Mineral Mapping With Aster Data By Integration Of Coded Spectral Ratio Imaging And Som Neural Network Model, Mohammad Hassan Tayebi, Majid Hashemi Tangestani, Robert Keller Vincent
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study applied coded spectral ratio imaging and a self-organizing map (SOM) neural network model for subpixel classification of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) data to map alteration minerals of the Masahim volcano, SE Iran. Spectra of samples were measured using a FieldSpec spectroradiometer, and were interpreted for finding key alteration minerals. Key minerals including sericite and kaolinite were selected. Thirty-six nonreciprocal spectral ratios of 9 ASTER reflective bands were created. Each spectral parameter (of 9 spectral bands and 36 spectral ratios) for the field and library mineral spectra was divided into deciles. Each decile of spectral …
Associating Severe Thunderstorm Warnings With Demographic And Landscape Variables: A Geographically Weighted Regression-Based Mapping Of Forecast Bias, Megan L. White
Theses and Dissertations--Geography
Severe thunderstorm warnings (SVTs) are released by meteorologists in the local forecast offices of the National Weather Service (NWS). These warnings are issued with the intent of alerting areas in the path of severe thunderstorms that human and property risk are elevated, and that appropriate precautionary measures should be taken. However, studies have shown that the spatial distribution of severe storm warnings demonstrates bias. Greater numbers of severe thunderstorm warnings sometimes are issued where population is denser. By contrast, less populated areas may be underwarned. To investigate the spatial patterns of these biases for the central and southeastern United States, …

Landfills – Territorial Issues Of Cities From North-East Region, Romania, Florin C. Mihai, Pavel Ichim
Florin C MIHAI
Landfilling prevails in waste management options in Romania like others new EU members, being contrary to the concept of waste hierarchy promoted in recent years by EC. Waste disposal is done usually in non-compliant landfills and Government established a program to close these sites. This paper aims to analyse the transition from traditional waste management systems to an integrated system at national, regional and local scale. Assessment of landfills location based on buffer analysis (using GIS techniques) is made according to the proximity of five critical factors (CF) such as: residential area, industry & commercial units, agricultural lands, rivers & …
Global Digital Elevation Model Accuracy Assessment In The Himalaya, Nepal, Luke G. Miles
Global Digital Elevation Model Accuracy Assessment In The Himalaya, Nepal, Luke G. Miles
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are digital representations of surface topography or terrain. Collection of DEM data can be done directly through surveying and taking ground control point (GCP) data in the field or indirectly with remote sensing using a variety of techniques. The accuracies of DEM data can be problematic, especially in rugged terrain or when differing data acquisition techniques are combined. For the present study, ground data were taken in various protected areas in the mountainous regions of Nepal. Elevation, slope, and aspect were measured at nearly 2000 locations. These ground data were imported into a Geographic Information System …

Investigating Risk Factors Of Underground Power Cables In Iceland, Ingunn Gunnarsdottir
Investigating Risk Factors Of Underground Power Cables In Iceland, Ingunn Gunnarsdottir
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
In designing, installing and managing an underground electric power cable system in Iceland, efficient thermal dissipation in the soil surrounding the cable is critical in preventing thermal breakdown due to high temperatures at cable jackets. Two underground power cables extend from the Nesjavellir geothermal plant to Reykjavik. Previous work has shown that the thermal conductivity of soil is dependent on soil water content. There are various environmental factors that may affect soil water content, causing the soil to dry up. This study identified the various factors that should be considered when dealing with underground power cables, particularly with regard to …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this information age, more and more public statistical data such as population census, household living, local economy and business establishment are distributed over the internet within the framework of spatial data infrastructure. By and large, these data are organized geographically such as region, province as well as district. Usually, they are published in the form of digital maps over the internet as simple points, lines and polygons markers limited or no analytical function available to transform these data into useful information. To meet the analytical needs of casual public data users, we contribute RIGA, a rich internet geospatial analytics …

The Application Of Geographic Information Technology And Ground-Penetrating Radar In The Study Of The Evolution Of The Charles River Basin, Lars E. Anderas
Graduate Masters Theses
A two-part study was conducted on the evolution of the shoreline of the Charles River basin on a city-wide scale as well as in finer detail in Magazine Beach Park, along the Cambridge shore of the river. Both parts of the study utilized geographic information technology (GIT) to integrate and analyze data from modern and historical sources, including maps, digital elevation models (DEMs), and orthographic and oblique photography. The city-scale portion of the study produced estimates of the total area of new land made within the study area since Boston's founding in 1630, 14.3 km2, of which 6.5 …
