My dissertation presents several new algorithms incorporating non-parametric and deep learning approaches for computer vision and related tasks, including object localization, object tracking and model compression. With respect to object localization, I introduce a method to perform active localization by modeling spatial and other relationships between objects in a coherent "visual situation" using a set of probability distributions. I further refine this approach with the Multipole Density Estimation with Importance Clustering (MIC-Situate) algorithm. Next, I formulate active, "situation" object search as a Bayesian optimization problem using Gaussian Processes. Accessible interactive tools that integrate machine learning methods with clinical research and reduce the programming experience required are needed to move science forward. Here, we present Machine Learning for Medical Exploration and Data-Inspired Care (ML-MEDIC), a point-and-click, interactive tool with a visual interface for facilitating machine learning and statistical analyses in clinical research. We deployed ML-MEDIC in the American Heart Association (AHA) Precision Medicine Platform to provide secure internet access and facilitate collaboration. Network anomalies are correlated to activities that deviate from regular behavior patterns in a network, and they are undetectable until their actions are defined as malicious. Current work in network anomaly detection includes network-based and host-based intrusion detection systems. However, network anomaly detection schemes can suffer from high false detection rates due to the base rate fallacy. In this work, the behavior of dilute interstitial helium in W–Mo binary alloys was explored through the application of a first principles-informed neural network (NN) in order to study the early stages of helium-induced damage and inform the design of next generation materials for fusion reactors. The neural network (NN) was trained using a database of 120 density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the alloy. The DFT database of computed solution energies showed a linear dependence on the composition of the first nearest neighbor metallic shell. Accurately mapping tree species composition and diversity is a critical step towards spatially explicit and species-specific ecological understanding. The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a valuable source of open ecological data across the United States. Freely available NEON data include in-situ measurements of individual trees, including stem locations, species, and crown diameter, along with the NEON Airborne Observation Platform (AOP) airborne remote sensing imagery, including hyperspectral, multispectral, and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data products. Planners for hard problems must exploit domain-specific structure to find solutions efficiently. Yet, hand-engineered solutions and optimizations are often expensive and difficult or impossible to adapt to other problems. This work applies automatic machine learning techniques to increase planner performance for specific problem domains and to learn useful abstract representations for planning. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and the second-leading cause of cancer death in men. Brachytherapy is a highly effective treatment option for prostate cancer, and is the most cost-effective initial treatment among all other therapeutic options for low to intermediate risk patients of prostate cancer. In low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy, verifying the location of the radioactive seeds within the prostate and in relation to critical normal structures after seed implantation is essential to ensuring positive treatment outcomes.

Sound pressure level (SPL) meter is one of the useful devices used for measuring the sound level pressure. The measurement device displays the SPL value in decibels (dB) on a standard LCD screen (no backlight). We could base on the digit number shown on the LCD screen to do some adjustments or evaluations. Generalized linear models have broad applications in biostatistics and sociology. In a regression setup, the main target is to find a relevant set of predictors out of a large collection of covariates. Sparsity is the assumption that only a few of these covariates in a regression setup have a meaningful correlation with an outcome variate of interest. Sparsity is incorporated by regularizing the irrelevant slopes towards zero without changing the relevant predictors and keeping the resulting inferences intact. K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) has remained one of the most popular methods for supervised machine learning tasks. However, its performance often depends on the characteristics of the dataset and on appropriate feature scaling. In this thesis, characteristics of a dataset that make it suitable for being used within KNN are explored. As part of this, two new measures for dataset dispersion, called mean neighborhood target variance (MNTV), and mean neighborhood target entropy (MNTE) are developed to help determine the performance we expect while using KNN regressors and classifiers, respectively. Solar energy is a key renewable energy source; however, its intermittent nature and potential for use in distributed systems make power prediction an important aspect of grid integration. This research analyzed a variety of machine learning techniques to predict power output for horizontal solar panels using 14 months of data collected from 12 northern-hemisphere locations. We performed our data collection and analysis in the absence of irradiation data—an approach not commonly found in prior literature. The correct assignment of trades as buyer-initiated or seller-initiated is paramount in many quantitative finance studies. Simple decision rule methods have been used for signing trades since many data sets available to researchers do not include the sign of each trade executed. By utilizing these decision rule methods, as well as engineering new variables from available data, we have demonstrated that machine learning models outperform prior methods for accurately signing trades as buys and sells, achieving state-of-the-art results. The best model developed was 4.5 percentage points more accurate than older methods when predicting onto unseen data. Since finance and economics …

The vast majority of advances in deep neural network research operate on the basis of a real-valued weight space. Recent work in alternative spaces have challenged and complemented this idea; for instance, the use of complex- or binary-valued weights have yielded promising and fascinating results. We propose a framework for a novel weight space consisting of vector values which we christen VectorNet. We have used machine learning techniques on images containing contrails in hopes of being able to identify those which contain contrails and those that do not. The developed algorithm processes data on contrail characteristics as captured by long-term image records. Images collected by the United States Deparment of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Management user facility(ARM) were used to train a deep convolutional neural network for the purpose of this contrail classification. The main purpose of information visualization is to act as a window between a user and data. Historically, this has been accomplished via a single-agent framework: the only decisionmaker in the relationship between visualization system and analyst is the analyst herself. Yet this framework arose not from first principles, but from necessity: prior to this decade, computers were limited in their decision-making capabilities, especially in the face of large, complex datasets and visualization systems.
