Certain Generalisations Of Acceptance Sampling Plans By Attributes., R. J. Pandey Dr. Aug 1985

Certain Generalisations Of Acceptance Sampling Plans By Attributes., R. J. Pandey Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The use of inspection gained importance when people started getting conscious of maintaining the quality of manufactured product. According to Anscombe (1958) inspection for quality in the form of acceptance sampling plans originated around 1920. The classical work of Dodge and Romig (1929) put acceptance sampling on a firm footing. In general, sampling inspection can be broadly classified into (i) lot- by-lot inspection (11) bulk sampling inspection and (iii) "continuous; sampling inspection. The lot-by-lot sampling inspection is applied where a series of lots or batches of discrete items are available for inspection. On the other hand, a batch of cotton, a …

Some Spectral Properties Of Three And Four Body Scrodinger Operators By The Methods Of Time Dependent Scattering Theory., M. Krishna Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In the present work we shall deal with the asymptotic completeness problem in three and four (Quantum Mechanical) particle scattering. This thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter we give an introduction to Scattering Phencmenon and give a description of the N-particle completeness problem. Then we collect some results preliminary to the later chapters and some results that would complete a discussion of the problem. The second chapter consists of some technical results and a reduction of the asymptotic completeness problem in N-particlerscattering via time dependent methods. The last chapter has two sections. The first section deals with verifying …

Interpolating Sequences On Curves, Samih Obaid, D. Rung Jan 1985

Interpolating Sequences On Curves, Samih Obaid, D. Rung

Faculty Publications

We established a condition on boundary curves (ending at points) lying either in the unit disc or the upper half plane which implies that any consecutively separated sequence, in the hyperbolic distance, lying on one of these curves is an interpolating sequence for bounded holomorphic functions.

These are compared to the …

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr. Aug 1984

On The Choice Of Shadow Prices For Project Evaluation., Jean Dreze Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Manohar athanna is one of the remotest parts of Jhalawar District (Rajasthan, India). In the month of June it offers a striking contrast of scenic beauty and economic destitution. Agricultural activity is at a virtual standstill. The soil is very arid, irrigation practically non-existent, and by then the villagers (many of them tribals) have resolved to wait upon the good will of the rain gods.. Hence they have very little to do, or at least so they believe. Some gather wood to sell it in Manohar, walking miles under the scorching sun for a meagre reward, and adding slowly but …

Deformation And Linkage Of Gorenstein Algebras, Andrew R. Kustin, Matthew Miller

Faculty Publications

General double linkage of Gorenstein algebras is defined. Rigidity, genericity, and regularity up to codimension six all pass across general double linkage. Rigid strongly unobstructed codimension four Gorenstein algebras which lie in different Herzog classes are produced.

The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell Jul 1984

The Expectation Of Success Using A Monte Carlo Factoring Method – Some Statistics On Quadratic Class Numbers, Duncan A. Buell

Faculty Publications

A method has been proposed for factoring an integer N by using the structure of the class groups of quadratic fields of radicand – kN for various small multipliers k. We discuss the method and an implementation of the method, and various theoretical questions which have an impact on the practical use of the method in factoring. Some of the theoretical questions relate to the nature of class numbers and class groups; we present extensive statistical results on the class numbers and class groups of imaginary quadratic fields.

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott Apr 1984

Error-Bounds For Gaussian Quadrature And Weighted-L1 Polynomial Approximation, Ronald A. Devore, L R. Scott

Faculty Publications

Error bounds for Gaussian quadrature are given in terms of the number of quadrature points and smoothness properties of the function whose integral is being approximated. An intermediate step involves a weighted-L' polynomial approximation problem which is treated in a more general context than that specifically required to bound the Gaussian quadrature error.

Cultural Commentary: What Hath Rubik Wrought?, Thomas E. Moore Mar 1984

Cultural Commentary: What Hath Rubik Wrought?, Thomas E. Moore

Bridgewater Review

In May, 1980 the Ideal Toy Company launched its newest offering, Rubik’s Cube, at a party in Hollywood, hosted by Zsa-Zsa Gabor and Solomon W. Golomb. Of course Gabor, like the cube, is a Hungarian product but who is Golomb? Well, he is a mathematician at the University of Southern California and an expert in number theory, combinatorics, abstract algebra and coding theory. Rubik invented the cube as an aid in teaching his students three-dimensional thinking. The cube has become the darling of algebraists, who use it to teach group theory to their students.

Maximal Functions Measuring Smoothness, Ronald A. Devore, Robert C. Sharpley Dec 1983

Maximal Functions Measuring Smoothness, Ronald A. Devore, Robert C. Sharpley

Robert Sharpley

Maximal functions which measure the smoothness of a function are introduced and studied from the point of view of their relationship to classical smoothness and their use in proving embedding theorems, extension theorems and various results on differentiation. New spaces of functions which generalize Sobolev spaces are introduced.

Optimal Block Designs In One And Multi-Way Settings., Sunanda Bagchi Dr. Sep 1983

Optimal Block Designs In One And Multi-Way Settings., Sunanda Bagchi Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The study of optimality of block designs formally began with wald (1943) proving a very important optimality property, designated as D-optimality of Iatin Square. Desi gns in a given physical set up. Next Ehrenfield (1955) proved the E-optimality property of Latin Square Designs. Since then, the work in: the area has primarily consisted in evolving a number of useful opti- mality oriteria for oomparing block design in a reasonable set up given and oharacterizing and/or constructing desi gns saiisfying the so called optimality criteria developed. But it was not until 1958, when the theory was given a proper and precise …

The Changing Concept Of Change: The Derivative From Fermat To Weierstrass, Judith V. Grabiner Sep 1983

The Changing Concept Of Change: The Derivative From Fermat To Weierstrass, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Historically speaking, there were four steps in the development of today's concept of the derivative, which I list here in chronological order. The derivative was first used; it was then discovered; it was then explored and developed; and it was finally defined. That is, examples of what we now recognize as derivatives first were used on an ad hoc basis in solving particular problems; then the general concept lying behind them these uses was identified (as part of the invention of calculus); then many properties of the derivative were explained and developed in applications both to …

Some Results About Basic Elements, Cancellation And Efficient Generation Of Modules Over Laurent Polynomial Rings., S. Mandal Dr. Feb 1983

Some Results About Basic Elements, Cancellation And Efficient Generation Of Modules Over Laurent Polynomial Rings., S. Mandal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Unless otherwise stated all rings are assumed to be commutative and Noetherian with finite Krull dimension and modules are finitely generated. There are three related questions in commutative algebra. They are about the existence of unimodular elements in projective modules, cancellation of projective modules and minimal number of generators for finitely generated modules. In particular, determining the minimal number of generators of ideals is also of great interest in this area.In this thesis we shall be concerned with the above questions in the case of Laurent polynomial rings. The thesis consists of three Chapters. The main results are presented in Chapters …

Pathwise Stochastic Calculus Of Continuous Semimartingales., Rajeeva L. Karandikar Dr. Feb 1982

Pathwise Stochastic Calculus Of Continuous Semimartingales., Rajeeva L. Karandikar Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Stochastic integration with respect to Brownian motion was introduced by Ito. Stochastic integration with respect to martingales (and seminartingales) was developed by Kunita-Watanable [24 Fisk [9), Courrege D] and Meyer [33]. In this thesis, we study the path wise stochastic calculus restricting ourselves to continuous semimartingales. Here is a brief summary of our results. In Chapter I, we obtain a pathwise formula for the quadratic variation process < M > of a continuous local martingale M. Recall theat < M > is the natural increasing process in the Doob-Meyer decomposition of M. By a part wice formula for M> we mean a formula describing cxplicitly a w-path …

The Alfsen-Errors Structure Topology In The Theory Of Complex L1-Preduals., T. S.S.R.K. Rao Dr. Feb 1982

The Alfsen-Errors Structure Topology In The Theory Of Complex L1-Preduals., T. S.S.R.K. Rao Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A complex Banach space X is said to be an L1-predual if X* is isometric to L1() for some non-negative measure Well known examples of L1-preduals include the space C(X) of complex-valued continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space and the abstract M-spaces of Kakutani. In [19], Grothendieck introduced a class of L'-preduals, now known as G-spaces, and conjectured that those are all the L'-preduals. In his 1964 memoir [35], Lândenstrauss settled this conjecture by exhibiting a wide class of Banach spaces, other than G-spaces, which are L1-preduals. He also gave several characterizations and interest- ing properties of L1-preduals in …

Richard Whately And The Revival Of Syllogistic Logic In Great Britain In The Early Nineteenth Century, Calvin Jongsma Jan 1982

Richard Whately And The Revival Of Syllogistic Logic In Great Britain In The Early Nineteenth Century, Calvin Jongsma

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Richard Whately's Elements of Logic in 1826 marked the end of a dismal era in the history of British logic. His work sparked a revival in Britain, culminating in several distinct developments, none of which, however, Whately contributed to. Yet his work laid the foundation for them by providing a spirited defense of the syllogism and of deductive reasoning generally.

The first chapter begins with a systematic synopsis of the criticisms and responses which were made from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. These related primarily to the nature of logic and the epistemic utility of syllogistic reasoning, but …

Metrizability And The Frechet-Urysohn Property In Topological Groups, Peter J. Nyikos Dec 1981

Metrizability And The Frechet-Urysohn Property In Topological Groups, Peter J. Nyikos

Faculty Publications

A question of Arhangel'skii, whether weakly first countable topological groups are metrizable, is answered in two ways: if the Hausdorff axiom is assumed, the answer is yes, but in general a weakly first countable topological group need not be pseudometrizable. The former result is obtained as a corollary of a more general sufficient condition for a sequential group to be Fr&chet-Urysohn. A general necessary and sufficient condition for a sequential group to be Frechet-Urysohn is given, and a number of questions are raised. Examples are given to show in what respect the theorems of the paper are the "best possible".
