Theoretical Investigation Of The Surface Vibrational Modes In Germanium Nanocrystals, Shang-Fen Ren, Wei Cheng, Peter Y. Yu

We have used a microscopic lattice dynamical model to study phonon modes in germanium (Ge) NC with size varying between 47 to 7289 atoms (diametersimilar to6.8 nm). By separating these atoms into bulk and surface atoms we have found that surface modes can exist in Ge NC both at low frequencies (<50>cm(-1)) and at high frequency (similar to260 cm(-1)). The latter mode is a resonant mode which occurs in the "pseudogap" between the acoustic and optical phonon branches in bulk Ge. From the low frequency surface modes we have been able to reconstruct the spheroidal and torsional Lamb modes …

High-Field Measurements Of Electron Decoherence Time In Metallic Nanowires: Switching Off Magnetic Impurity Spins, P. Mohanty, Richard A. Webb

We report low-temperature measurements of electron decoherence time in a series of pure gold wires, 18 nm thick and 30 nm wide. At fields up to 15 T, large enough to polarize any concentration of magnetic impurity spins, conductance fluctuation measurements show almost no temperature dependence of the decoherence time below 300 mK, both in the correlation field for interference and the root-mean-square value of the fluctuations. Combined with previous low-field weak localization measurements on samples from similar material, our experiment suggests that the ubiquitous saturation of decoherence time in these samples is not due to any mechanism based on …

We study the evolution and distribution of nonequilibrium electron spin polarization in n-type semiconductors within the two-component drift-diffusion model in an applied electric field. Propagation of spin-polarized electrons through a boundary between two semiconductor regions with different doping levels is considered.We assume that inhomogeneous spin polarization is created locally and driven through the boundary by the electric field.We show that an initially created narrow region of spin polarization can be further compressed and amplified near the boundary. Since the boundary involves variation of doping but no real interface between two semiconductor materials, no significant spin polarization loss is expected. …

This report details work toward the fabrication of a single-electron transistor created from a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT). Specifically discussed is a method for growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via carbon vapor deposition (CVD). The growth is catalyzed by a solution of 0.02g Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, 0.005g MoO2(acac)2, and 0.015g of alumina particles in 15mL methanol. SWNT diameter ranges from 0.6 to 3.0 nm. Also discussed is a method to control nanotube growth location by patterning samples with small islands of catalyst. Photolithography is a key element of the modem integrated circuit process. It is photolithography, combined with metal deposition, that allows a three dimensional circuit to be built up on a two dimensional surface. Since it is such an important part of the semiconductor manufacturing industry, a massive base of research in this area already exists. The problem with this pre-existing research is that it is geared solely toward industrial purposes, as opposed to more academic research areas. The goal of my research is to move this industrial process into the academic setting of Pomom College.

C3H52+, formed by electron impact ionization of propane, undergoes metastable decay into C2H2++CH3+. We have monitored this reaction in a magnetic mass spectrometer of reversed geometry that is equipped with two electric sectors (BEE geometry). Three different techniques were applied to identify the fragment ions and determine the kinetic-energy release (KER) of spontaneous Coulomb explosion of C3H52+ in the second and third field free regions of the mass spectrometer. The KER distribution is very narrow, with a width of about 3% [root-mean square standard deviation]. An average KER of 4.58+/-0.15 eV is derived from the distribution. High level ab initio …

Recent interest in the development of a unifying framework among direct numerical simulations, large-eddy simulations, and statistically averaged formulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, provides the motivation for the present paper. Toward that goal, the properties of the residual (subgrid-scale) stress of the temporally filtered Navier-Stokes equations are carefully examined. This includes the frame-invariance properties of the filtered equations and the resulting residual stress. Causal time-domain filters, parametrized by a temporal filter width 0infinity, the residual stress is equivalent to the long-time averaged stress, and the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are recovered from the temporally filtered equations. The first measurements of the transferred polarization for the exclusive ep → e'K+ Λ over right arrow reaction have been performed at Jefferson Laboratory using the CLAS spectrometer. A 2.567 GeV beam was used to measure the hyperon polarization over Q2 from 0.3 to 1.5 (GeV/c)2, W from 1.6 to 2.15 GeV, and over the full K+ center-of-mass angular range. Comparison with predictions of hadrodynamic models indicates strong sensitivity to the underlying resonance contributions. A nonrelativistic quark-model interpretation of our data suggests that the s -s quark pair is produced with spins predominantly …

The cross section for the reaction ep→ e'pπ+π- was measured in the resonance region for 1.4 2 < 1.5 GeV2/c2using the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. The data show resonant structures not visible in previous experiments. The comparison of our data to a phenomenological prediction using available information on N* and Δ states shows an evident discrepancy. A better description of the data is obtained either by a sizable change of the properties of the P13(1720) resonance or by introducing a new baryon state, not reported in published analyses.

Phonon modes and Raman intensities of Ge quantum dots (QDs) with two different types of surfaces, a free standing surface or a fixed surface, in a size range from five atoms to 7 nm in diameter, are calculated by using a microscopic valence force field model. The results are compared, and the effects of surfaces on phonon properties of QDs are investigated. It is found that phonon modes and Raman intensities of QDs with these two different types of surfaces have obvious differences which clearly reveal the effects of the surfaces of QDs. In recent work, the formation of ring-shaped electron distributions for hydrogen atoms in resonant static magnetic-laser fields has exclusively been associated with the impact of relativity. In this note we will generalize this statement and show that the nonlinearity associated with the nuclear binding force can trigger similarly shaped steady-state charge clouds in atoms under suitable conditions. The dephasing model, based on modeling the quantum-mechanical state by a classical ensemble of quasiparticles evolving with slightly different cyclotron periods, can recover features, in the two lowest-order resonances as well as the Coulomb-field-induced charge distributions.

Electron transport in a low-dimensional structure—the nuclear-spin-polarization-induced quantum wire is theoretically studied. In the proposed system the local nuclear-spin polarization creates the effective hyperfine field that confines the electrons with the spins opposite to the hyperfine field to the regions of maximal nuclear-spin polarization. The influence of the nuclear-spin relaxation and diffusion on the electron energy spectrum and on the conductance of the quantum wire is calculated and the experimental feasibility is discussed.

Using the numerical solution to the time-dependent Dirac equation we show that the effect of relativity on the usual Larmor period for an electron in a magnetic field can be enhanced drastically if a suitably scaled and aligned static electric field is added to the interaction. This electric field does not change the electron's speed but leads to an elliptical spin precession due to relativity. This spin precession is accompanied by a position-dependent spin distribution.

The parity nonconserving spin rotation of neutrons in the 0.734-eV p-wave resonance of La-139 was measured with the neutron transmission method. Two optically polarized He-3 cells were used before and behind a 5-cm long La-139 target, each as a polarizer and an analyzer for neutron spin. The rotation angle was carefully measured by flipping the direction of He-3 polarization in the polarizer in sequence. The peak-to-peak value of the spin rotation was determined to be (7.4+/-1.1) x 10(-3) rad/cm. The result is found to be consistent with the previous experiments, but the result was statistically improved. The s-p mixing model …

Calculations On The Size Effects Of Raman Intensities Of Silicon Quantum Dots, Wei Cheng, Shang-Fen Ren

Raman intensities of Si quantum dots (QD's) with up to 11489 atoms (about 7.6 nm in diameter) for different scattering configurations are calculated. First, phonon modes in these QD's, including all vibration frequencies and vibration amplitudes, are calculated directly from the lattice-dynamic matrix by using a microscopic valence force field model combined with the group theory. Then the Raman intensities of these quantum dots are calculated by using a bond-polarizability approximation. The size effects of the Raman intensity in these QD's are discussed in detail based on these calculations. The calculations are compared with the available experimental observations. We are …

We present both experimental data and an analytic theory for the de Haas–van Alphen ~dHvA! effect in the two-dimensional organic single-crystal conductor k -(ET)2Cu(NCS)2. We show that the magnetization oscillation pattern and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectrum of our measurements are well described theoretically within the coherent magnetic breakdown (MB) model for a two-dimensional Fermi surface consisting of two open sheets and closed pockets connected by magnetic breakdown centers. The spectrum of Landau quantized energy levels changes substantially due to the MB. Landau bands develop whose bandwidth and relative distance between them oscillate in inverse magnetic field. Anomalous Conductance Distribution In Quasi-One-Dimensional Gold Wires: Possible Violation Of The One-Parameter Scaling Hypothesis, Pritiraj Mohanty, Richard A. Webb

We report measurements of conductance distribution in a set of quasi-one-dimensional gold wires. The distribution includes the second cumulant or the variance which describes the universal conductance fluctuations, and the third cumulant which denotes the leading deviation. We have observed an asymmetric contribution—or, a nonvanishing third cumulant—contrary to the expectation for quasi-one-dimensional systems in the noninteracting theories in the one-parameter scaling framework, which include the perturbative diagrammatic calculations and the random matrix theory.

Using a form of modified dispersion relations derived in the context of quantum geometry, we investigate limits set by current observations on potential corrections to Lorentz invariance. We use a phenomological model in which there are separate parameters for photons, leptons and hadrons. Constraints on these parameters are derived using thresholds for the processes of photon stability, photon absorption, vacuum Cerenkov radiation, pion stability and the GZK cutoff. Although the allowed region in parameter space is tightly constrained, non-vanishing corrections to Lorentz symmetry due to quantum geometry are consistent with current astrophysical observations.

Differential cross sections for γp→ηp have been measured with tagged real photons for incident photon energies from 0.75 to 1.95 GeV. Mesons were identified by missing mass reconstruction using kinematical information for protons scattered in the production process. The data provide the first extensive angular distribution measurements for the process above W = 1.75  GeV. Comparison with preliminary results from a constituent quark model support the suggestion that a third S11 resonance with mass ∼1.8  GeV couples to the ηN channel.

Two classical scalar fields are minimally coupled to gravity in the Kachru-Shulz-Silverstein scenario with a rolling fifth radius. A Tolman wormhole solution is found for a R x S^3 brane with Lorentz metric and for a R x AdS_3 brane with positive definite metric.

Critique Of The Wigner Tunneling Speed And A Proposed Alternative, P Krekora, Q Su, Rainer Grobe

In the context of superluminal propagation of wave packets through potential barriers, the tunneling speed is usually characterized by the Wigner velocity. We propose an alternative speed that takes into account the interference between the incoming and the reflected waves and leads to a better estimation of arrival time for a wave packet entering the tunneling region. This arrival time is derived by an extrapolation from inside the barrier. The analytical theory is based on the stationary phase approximation whose validity is justified by a comparison with the numerical solution of the time-dependent Dirac equation.

First-principles full potential linear muffin-tin orbital-generalized gradient approximation electronic structure calculations of the new medium-Tc superconductor (MTSC) MgB2 and related diborides indicate that superconductivity in these compounds is related to the existence of Px,y-band holes at the γ point. Based on these calculations, we explain the absence of medium-Tc superconductivity for BeB2, AlB2, ScB2, and YB2.
