Three sets of twelve oysters from the ,James River were placed in three recirculating aquaria dosed with the radioactive tracer zinc-65. All aquaria had the same amount of river bottom sediment which was kept in suspension by the water movement caused by aeration; one aquarium had twice as much tracer as the other two. The salinity of one of the low dose aquaria and. the high dose aquarium was maintained at 18 0/00: the other low dose aquarium was maintained at 1:2 0/00. All other factors were kept constant. Two water quality models of the Pagan River were developed in the 1970s by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The first model was developed under the CSA (cooperative state agencies) program (Kuo, Lewis and Fang, 1976). It simulated the oxidation of organic matter and the effect that, and reaeration, had on the dissolved oxygen regime of the river. The model included four water quality parameters: salinity, dissolved oxygen, carbonaceous oxygen demand and nitrogenous oxygen demand. A later model, developed as part of the Hampton Roads 208 studies, was an expansion of the first one. It included the nitrogen and …

Effluent and sediment samples were collected from 30 point source discharge sites within tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay, and analyzed for the presence of toxic organic compounds. The facilities selected included: municipal treatment plants, oil refining and storage operations, shipyards, military bases, paper companies, electrical power generators and various other manufacturing enterprises. In addition to sediment, shellfish were collected from the receiving streams. Unfortunately, environmental conditions in the vicinity of many of the facilities were unsatisfactory for the long-term survival of shellfish. As a consequence their availability was limited. ....

Work is underway to clarify the population status of Virginia's biota that have been considered rare, endangered, or of an unknown population status by earlier scientists (Porter, 1979). The purpose of the current study was to investigate the population status and areal distribution of five of these plant species found on the tidal rivers of the Coasta1 Plain in Virginia. During the months of June and September 1988, gear experiments were conducted aboard the F/V Carolina Dawn and Carolina Capes. The primary objective of the experiments was to assess the technical efficiency and size selectivity of 3.5-inch ring dredges relative to the current commercially-used 3.0-inch ring dredges. Secondary objectives were to analyze the economic and regulatory ramifications of using 3.5-inch ring dredges to control the age-at-capture and enhance the yield-per- recruit.

The Datasonics Model ASA-920 digital sonar altimeter (DSA) is a compact, high frequency (1 MHz), short range (0.5 to 5 m) underwater sonar device originally designed as an altimeter for submersib1es. Wright et al. (1986) have used the DSA successfully to measure changes in relative bed elevation at a point on the shoreface prior to and during a storm. Fixed to a rigid mounting on the seabed, the DSA produces a digital output that is proportional to the transducer elevation above the bed. The purpose of this report is to describe the response characteristics of the DSA.

In Summer, 1986 a field program was conducted in Ware Creek from its mouth at the York River to the dam at Richardson's Millpond. The data collected was combined with flow data from USGS and a tide record from NOAA and was used to calibrate and verify a one-dimensional, real-time, hydrodynamic and salinity intrusion model. The model has been applied to study the effect of the proposed dam and reservoir on the salinity distribution in Ware Creek.

The processes which drive the beach and nearshore changes vary considerably in space and time. The spatial variability is the result of modulations of waves and wave induced processes by the complex topography of the shoreface and inner shelf fronting the beaches. In this study we employed a state-of-the-art computer model to evaluate the nature of these modifications and their impact on coastal processes. The model estimates wave modifications by shoaling, refraction, diffraction. and loss of wave energy by frictional interaction with the bottom.

Internal anchor tags with external tubes were used to tag 1,986 striped bass in the James River in the Spring of 1987. The total number tagged was adjusted (at this time) to 823 because of observed and suspected tagging mortality. The available stock of striped bass in the Spring contained both young resident fish and mature nonresident fish which left the area of capture after spawning, presumably to migrate north in coastal waters. The exodus of the mature fish after spawning and the absence of a commercial fishery resulted in only 42 tag returns as of Spring 1988. This proportion …

A major element and concern necessary for evaluating the environmental impact of dredging operations is the dispersion of finegrained dredged material. The turbid plume generated by draghead agitation and by overflow processes from a hopper dredge can dictate the degree of potential adverse effects. Under certain environmental and aesthetic circumstances control of the plume may be advisable. Although turbid plumes produced by open water disposal operations have been evaluated in many investigations (e.g. Barnard. 1978). detailed field assessments of plumes produced by hopper dredging operations are scarce.

The Virginia Division of Mineral Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science jointly made three cruises over the Virginia continental shelf in April and July of 1985 to sample known heavy-mineral sites for minerals of potential economic and/or strategic value. In addition to sampling, side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling surveys were performed at a site off Smith Island. At the Smith Island site, as many as four acoustic horizons were detected within the upper 6 meters of sediment.
