Determination Of Zineb In Tap Water And Tomato Samples By Adsorptive Catalytic Stripping Voltammetry, Özlem Karakoç, Nuri̇ Naki̇boğlu
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This paper describes a sensitive and accurate adsorptive catalytic stripping voltammetric method for the determination of zineb (zinc ethylene-bis- dithiocarbamate) in tap water and tomato samples. The method is based on the reduction of adsorbed zineb at a hanging mercury drop electrode following its catalytic oxidation using peroxydisulfate as an oxidizing reagent. Chemical and instrumental parameters of the process were optimized. The catalytic mechanism of the reduction of zineb is discussed as well. The limits of detection (3 s) and quantification (10 s) and linear range of the method for accumulation time of 60 s were calculated as 8.1 nM, …

Palladium-Edta And Palladium-Edteh_4 Catalyzed Heck Coupling Reactions In Pure Water, Süleyman Gülcemal, Beki̇r Çeti̇nkaya
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling reactions of styrene with bromoarene derivatives are carried out under aerobic conditions in water using water-soluble N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine (EdteH_4) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (Na_2EDTA) as ligands. The effect of different bases, catalyst loading, and additives is also monitored. The olefination of bromoarenes with styrene affords the desired products in high yields. The Na_2PdCl_4-Na_2EDTA precatalyst system is also used for the preparative scale (50.0 mmol) synthesis of 4-acetyl-trans-stilbene and 4-styrylbenzaldehyde without a noticeable decrease in the activity. Recycling studies on the Na_2PdCl_4 - Na_2EDTA precatalyst system are also tested in the coupling of 4-bromoacetophenone with styrene.

Combining Mbr And Nf/Ro Membrane Filtration For The Removal Of Trace Organics In Indirect Potable Water Reuse Applications, William Price, Nichanan Tadkaew, Long Nghiem, Stuart Khan, Abdulhakeem Alturki, James Mcdonald
Long D Nghiem
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the complementarities of combining membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment with nanofiltration (NF) or reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filtration for the removal of trace organic contaminants for potential indirect potable water recycling applications. Four commercially available NF/RO membranes, namely NF270, NF90, BW30 and ESPA2, were selected for this investigation. Challenge tests were conducted with 40 trace organic compounds at concentrations of approximately 2 ng/L in initial wastewater solutions using a laboratory scaleMBRsystem and a cross-flow NF/RO rig. The results suggest that the MBR system effectively removes hydrophobic and biodegradable trace organic compounds. The adsorption …

Theoretical Probing Of The Phenomenon Of The Formation Of The Outermost Surface Layer Of A Multi-Component Particle, And The Surface Chemical Composition After The Rapid Removal Of Water In Spray Drying, Mark Nelson, Harvinder Sidhu, X.D. Chen
Associate Professor Mark Nelson
Spray drying is a primary process for the manufacture of powders, which satisfy a vast array of societal demands in the areas of nutrition, health and medicine. The functionality of a spray-dried product begins with its incorporation into water (wetting followed by dispersion) Therefore, as its surface chemical composition and structure determine its first contact with water (that is, its hydrophilic nature), these are of prime concern. Laboratory studies on this first layer, which is in the order of several nm in depth from the surface, have been extensive but there is still a lack of a fundamental quantitative explanation …

Modelling Adsorption Of A Water Molecule Into Various Pore Structures Of Silica Gel, Duangkamon Baowan, Ngamta Thamwattana
Modelling Adsorption Of A Water Molecule Into Various Pore Structures Of Silica Gel, Duangkamon Baowan, Ngamta Thamwattana
Dr Ngamta Thamwattana
Silica gel is widely used in commercial applications as a water adsorbent due to its properties including hydrothermally stable, high water sorption capacity, low regeneration temperature, low cost and wide range of pore diameters. Since the water sorption capacity of silica gel strongly depends on the pore size and structure, which can be controlled during synthesis, this paper study the effect of pore shapes and dimensions of silica gel upon the adsorption of a water molecule aiming at maximising the water sorption capacity. In particular, we consider three types of pore structures, namely cylindrical, square prismatic and conical pores. On …

Safe Water For People In Low, Small Island Pacific Nations: The Rural-Urban Dilemma, Ian White, Tony Falkland, Taboia Metutera, Mourongo Katatia, Tererei Abete-Reema, Marc Overmars, Pascal Perez, Anne Dray
Professor Pascal Perez
The issue of ensuring that growing communities in small island countries have access to safe water and adequate sanitation is examined in Kiribati, whose islands are spread over three million square kilometres in the central Pacific. Its coral island communities have water supply and sanitation problems among the most difficult in the world. Formulaic developed-world approaches, models, techniques and toolboxes that do not consider the social and cultural context have had little success. Changes in approach at the international, national and local levels are called for, and the resourcing of village-level water and sanitation committees would return ownership and control …

Towards An Art And Science Of Decision Aiding For Water Management And Planning: A Participatory Modelling Process, Katherine A. Daniell, Ian White, Nils Ferrand, Alexis Tsoukias, Stewart Burn, Pascal Perez
Professor Pascal Perez
Planning and management of water resources are faced with increasingly high levels of complexity, uncertainty and conflict. Traditional technical and top-down management strategies have proved inadequate, forcing a move to more "integrated" forms of management, planning and decision making that can include stakeholders and communities, as well as technical experts and policy makers. These integrated forms of management require not only good technical or scientific ability, but a range of "art-like" skills including communication, creativity and the capacity to acknowledge and integrate diverse points of view. However, processes designed to aid such inter-organisational or multi-stakeholder decisionmaking are rare and in …

lack of consideration of local circumstances and process requirements, and in particular inadequate involvement of affected stakeholders as well as inadequate cross-sectorial coordination. This is not surprising given poor organizational memory combined with decisions being made under time pressure and strict deadlines combined with little adaptive capacity. Additionally, information about the importance of process requirements and engagement is qualitative and as such is unfortunately often given secondary importance. To address this, we suggest a Risk assessment component as part of the project design phase based on Bayesian Networks (BNs) utilizing expert and local knowledge. This not only improves organizational memory …

Participatory Assessment Of Water Developments In An Atoll Town, Magnus Moglia, Pascal Perez
Professor Pascal Perez
Water development projects often fail, which represents a poor outcome given the limited progress against the Millennium Development Goals in providing people with adequate water and sanitation services. This may not be surprising given that water management has been identified as being in the complex system domain. According to the Cynefin framework, many traditional approaches are not suitable; but it suggests an approach based on the methods of probe, sense and respond. In line with this general framework, a participatory assessment methodology has been used to explore experiences in the atoll town of Tarawa in the Republic of Kiribati. After …

Oxygen Exchange During The Reaction Of Pocl3 And Water, Robert Clark, Robert Morrison, Andrew Thomas, Rebeca Alvarez, Paul Milham
Associate Professor Robert Graham Clark
To investigate O exchange during the reaction of POCl3 and water, natural abundance POCl3 was reacted with water highly enriched in 18O, and the resulting H3PO4 was isolated as KH2PO4. This reaction was conducted with and without tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a solvent, and was controlled in THF and violent in its absence. Approximately 5 x 10-4M aqueous solutions of the KH2PO4 were analyzed using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, to estimate the proportions of the mass-clumped 16,17,18O isotope analogues of [H2PO4] -. During analysis, ~29% of [H2PO4] - dehydrated to [PO3]-, for which the proportions of the O isotope analogues were …
Water. World Water, A Crisis Of Global Governance?, Robert Weiner
Water. World Water, A Crisis Of Global Governance?, Robert Weiner
Robert Weiner
In a global world, how can water, a necessary and increasingly scarce resource, be managed? We understand that water is a basic need. Do we also share the belief that water is a basic right? Does the international community share beliefs about water that may be the foundation of an international regime or system of global governance for the equitable implementation of global water policy? And finally, what international body or bodies might handle the disputes that arise as our population and need for water increase? The author tackles these questions and looks at models to guide us.

Leah Maree Gibbs
Troubled Waters is a collection of essays edited by Patrick Troy, Emeritus Professor and Visiting Fellow at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University. The papers are contributed by a multidisciplinary group of authors, from the fields of economics, history, geography, environmental and social policy and law. As a result, the book does not present a single theoretical or methodological approach and in this regard it is refreshing. The book is published by the ANU E Press; a publisher that makes academic output from the ANU freely available from its website, as well as for purchase through …

Development of visible light active (VLA) titania photocatalysts
Fujishima and Honda (1972) demonstrated the potential of titanium dioxide (TiO 2) semiconductor mate-rials to split water into hydrogen and oxygen in a photo-electrochemical cell. Their work triggered the development of semiconductor photocatalysis for a wide range of environmental and energy applica-tions. One of the most significant scientific and commercial advances to date has been the development of visible light active (VLA) TiO2 photocatalytic materials. In this review, a background on TiO2 struc-ture, properties and electronic properties in photocatalysis is presented. The development of different strategies to modify TiO2 for the utilization …
Theoretical Approaches To The Characterization Of Water, Aqueous Interfaces, And Improved Sampling Of Protein Conformational Changes, Alexis J. Lee
Theoretical Approaches To The Characterization Of Water, Aqueous Interfaces, And Improved Sampling Of Protein Conformational Changes, Alexis J. Lee
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Methods to advance the understanding of water and other aqueous systems are devel- oped. This work falls into three areas: The creation of better interaction potentials for water, improved methods for sampling configurational space, and the applications of these methods to understand systems of interest. Charge transfer has been shown by ab initio methods to be important in the water–water and water–ion interactions. A model for treating charge transfer in liquid water and aqueous systems is presented in this manuscript. The model is called Discrete Charge Transfer (DCT) and is based on the commonly-used TIP4P/2005 model, which represents the charge …
Synthesis Of 1,1-Dialkyhydrazines And Their Hydroxyl Radical Degradation In Aqueous Environments, Benjamin F. Strong
Synthesis Of 1,1-Dialkyhydrazines And Their Hydroxyl Radical Degradation In Aqueous Environments, Benjamin F. Strong
Masters Theses
Determination of hydroxyl radical rate constants are essential to ensure adequate degradation of contaminants in wastewater. Hydrazines are an important class of organic contaminants and are the focus of this research. Ten 1,1-dialkylhydrazines are synthesized by the zinc reduction of the corresponding N-nitrosamines. Their hydroxyl radical rate constants are determined using the linear accelerator at the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory at pH 4, 7, and 10.
Their rate constants are found to depend on the protonation state of the molecule. At pH 4 the molecules are fully protonated and hydrogen atom abstraction is favored from the alkyl chains. At …

Water Places: Cultural, Social And More-Than-Human Geographies Of Nature, Leah Gibbs
Leah Maree Gibbs
Cultural, social and more-than-human approaches to nature research are largely held apart in the discipline of human geography. In this paper I argue that these three approaches can be brought together to good effect. The paper presents a situated account of 'water places' in inland Australia-namely the artesian bores, boredrains and boredrain wetlands of the Birdsville Track-in order to demonstrate that together, these three approaches can reveal the complex interactions that form particular places, and comprise a more-than-human world. This account explores the layers of interaction that have formed these water places, including their insertion into the landscape through drilling, …

A Model To Relate Environmental Variation To Npdes Permit Violations At Thermoelectric Facilities On The Taunton River, Seth Delevan Sheldon
A Model To Relate Environmental Variation To Npdes Permit Violations At Thermoelectric Facilities On The Taunton River, Seth Delevan Sheldon
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Large thermoelectric facilities are issued permits to discharge high volume, high temperature effluents as part of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). Once-through cooled power plants are especially dependent on large quantities of cool water to operate. When ambient temperatures are high or streamflow is very low, power plant managers must reduce (i.e., "dial back") energy generation in order to avoid violating their NPDES permit limitations. Sudden dial-back can have human health impacts when electricity is no longer available to provide cooling or other vital services. A superior system of electricity and environmental management would reduce the probability of …
Dispersibility Of And Adsorption On Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Susana Addo Ntim
Dispersibility Of And Adsorption On Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Susana Addo Ntim
Dissertations
As the applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) proliferate, mass production and widespread use of these nanocarbons will continue to rise. While raw, unrefined, and hydrophobic carbon nanotubes tend to settle out of aqueous media/environments, water dispersible, functionalized CNTs (F-CNTs) will contaminate water resources and will also be highly bioavailable on exposure. Therefore, there is a need to develop an understanding of the fate of F-CNTs in aqueous media.
The colloidal behavior of aqueous dispersions of F-CNTs formed via carboxylation and polymer wrapping with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) is investigated. The presence of polymer on the nanotube surface provides steric stabilization, and …
