As we might expect as we read on in the literature we find that as Tampa grows, then the animals and fish which were so abundant slowly disappear. An interesting feature of these accounts are the stores told of mass killings of animals and birds for no reason except for fun. Also included are some tales of our notorious insect life and thundershowers. This report is a collection of some of the more interesting quotes from various sources.

Western and central Utah has 16 areas whose wells or springs yield hot water (35 degrees C or higher), warm water (20 degrees - 34.5 degrees C), and slightly warm water (15.5 degrees - 19.5 degrees C). A laser dye which is insoluble in water has been dissolved in hexane and emulsified in a water matrix. When pumped with a nitrogen laser, this mixture was observed to lase. The emulsion is superior to a simple hexane solution because the excellent thermo-optical properties of the water matrix help prevent refractive-index gradients from degrading laser performance. This is a useful characteristic for flash-pumped dye lasers, laser-pumped dye lasers, and liquid filters. Another type of solvent system, a critical solution, is also discussed. To obtain the profiles of dry bulb and wet bulb temperature, specific humidity, q, and air density, ρ, to a height of 200 meters above the ground, a precise lightweight thermocouple psychrometer was designed. To lift the thermocouple psychrometer and the attached wires in obtaining the ρq profiles, a rigid polyethylene balloon augmented with 5.5-feet outdoor or 100-g meteorological balloons were used. Using the height dependent eddy exchange coefficient and a one-dimensional time-dependent profile model, the nighttime variations of ρq as a function of height were predicted and compared with observed values. A potentiometric method which is devised to be rapid and convenient for determining ionization constants for water, weak acids (or bases), and certain solids in mixed solvents is described. The method has been applied to the determination of ionization for water, acetic acid, benzoic acid, and phenol and the solubility product constant for silver chloride in mixtures of water with methanol, ethanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, and p-dioxane containing from 0 to 70 mass percent organic co-solvent at several temperatures between 10 and 40°C. During 1973 and 1974 a water quality study was conducted in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. In 1973, baseline water quality data was collected from study locations which had been chained to remove pinyon-juniper vegetation six years earlier. The area had been chained under two different techniques: (1) doubled chained, with debris-left-in-place and (2) chained, with debris windrowed. An "undisturbed, natural" woodland was left between these two treatments in order to serve as a control area.

In the fall of 1973 and spring of 1974 secondary treatments of burning and grazing were superimposed upon the debris-in-place and windrowed sites, respectively. …

Development by man through the last half century has caused a number of changes in Bear Lake. These changes include the diversion of Bear River water into Bear Lake, the pumping of lake water back into the river, and the building of breakwaters and other obstructions along the shore of Bear Lake.

The diversion of Bear River water into the lake has resulted in a yearly addition of an estimated 36,000 metric tons of calcium into the lake, which has caused the precipitation of an estimated minimum 90,000 metric tons of aragonite. The pumping of Bear Lake water back into …

Accompanying the increased use of water resources is an increases accumulation of chemical pollutants. Te prevent degradation of the water resources beyong useful limits, pollution inputs from additional uses must be quite accurately predicted prior to implementation of the new use. The model described in this report was formulated to provide the required predictive capability for the Bear River Basin. Modeling concepts of the hydrologic system are based upon the development of basin relationships describing the hydrologic processes which are linked together by the countinuity-of-mass principle. Construction and testing of a double-beam absorption spectrographic analysis system using a d. c. arc multielement source has been conducted. An optical system design which brings analytical and reference beams together to illuminate the upper and lower portions of the spectrograph slit has been shown to be functional. However, ad. c. arc will not serve as a multielement source for the intended purposes because of excessive thermal broadening of emission lines.

A direct excitation d. c. arc method was reviewed which can be used for the rapid determination of some cations in water.

The filter paper method for measuring soil water potential was evaluated. The method was calibrated using salt solutions (-1.4 bars to -22.4 bars), sample chamber psychrometer (-1 to -50 bars), pressure plate (-0.1 to -15 bars) and soil column at equilibrium (0 to -0.2 bars). It was found that the absolute temperature had little effect on the predicted soil water potential, but a temperature variation had a large effect. It was found that the temperature fluctuation must be small. The predicted water potential was influenced by the type of contact of the soil with the filter paper. It is suggested …

Knowledge of water and salt movement in soils is necessary for development of a management scheme for controlling the quality of irrigation return flow. A computer model was developed to predict the distribution of water and salts in the root zone under varying initial and boundary conditions. The model consists of water flow and salt flow sub-models. The water flow sub-model considers the numerical approximation of the general water flow equation with modification for water loss by evapotranspiration (and thus root extraction). A variety of flameless atomic absorption methods have been investigated for the possible determination of trace elements in water. The general applicability of each technique was determined and where applicable, procedures have been developed for the determination of trace elements in natural waters.

Metals were preconcentrated by electrodeposition on a wire. The metals were then atomized for atomic absorption measurement by resistive heating of the wire. As little as 0.01 part per million (ppm) of mercury could be determined in this way.

On November 29, 1971, the Hamilton County Ground Water Con·­servation District sponsored a meeting on groundwater management and regulation. The meeting was held at Aurora, Nebraska, and was designed for irrigators from groundwater conservation dis­tricts and county irrigation associations. Various men from state and federal agencies spoke about a variety of problems that a.re related to groundwater management. Two of the talks that were presented at the meeting are reproduced here, as is a discussion of the rules and regulations that relate to the use of groundwater in the state of Nebraska.

The carbonate saturometer method developed by Weyl (1961) was studied in respect to the effect of several variables on the solubility of carbonates. The solubility of three solid carbonate materials was measured in four different salt solutions, at four ionic strengths, and at two different temperatures. The solids studied included: calcite, dolomite, and a calcareous soil.

It was found that the three solid carbonate materials varied in solubility from a low in the soil carbonates to a high in dolomite.

Increasing the ionic strength of the solution increased the solubility of most of the solid carbonate materials.

Studies involving field plots, lysimeters, and garbage can lysimeters showed that an intermediate soil water level produced the most growth for a given amount of water use by oats, corn, and barley. For crested wheatgrass the lowest water level produced the most growth per water used. Field plots which were covered with sheet metal between the rows produced more plant growth per water used than the uncovered plots for the crops used in this study. Cellulose acetate membranes show a higher permeability to water than to salt and are being used for desalination of salt water by reverse osmosis. Use of highly acetylated cellulose membranes give a higher salt rejection but also decrease flow rate of the water. The addition of very-short-chain substances or alkyl groups larger than one carbon atom to the cellulose membrane also decreases water flux. A proposed mechanism of transport through the membrane is that the water molecule is passed along the chain by hydrogen bonding with the acetyl groups, The NMR shows a change in the chemical shift of water …

The objective of this study was to evaluate response times of a salinity sensor and a soil psychrometer. Influences of pressure, temperature and molar concentration changes were to be measured.

Salinity sensor response times ranged from 50 to 130 minutes during solution adsorption while desorption response times were perhaps ten times as long. Temperature affected both response times and equilibrium values, but pressure did not affect either.

Soil psychrometer response times ranged from from 40 to 80 minutes for either adsorption or desorption of solution. However, other factors probably related to indirectness of measurement made the soil psychrometer fail to …
