The Boulder City Wetlands is a constructed wetlands park located in Boulder City, Nevada, approximately 23 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. Currently, a baseline study of water quality is being conducted in the Boulder City Wetlands. This baseline study of the wetlands is an important step in understanding the development of the Boulder City Wetlands over time. As wastewater is eventually introduced into the existing community tap water running through the wetlands, it is expected that the nitrogen within the water will enhance the growth of vegetation in the surrounding area. Comparing the vegetation growth over time is only …

A number of agencies sample Lake Mead and the Las Vegas Wash on a routine basis at several locations. In order to share and properly interpret the data, the Bureau of Reclamation, Southern Nevada Water Authority and the three Wastewater Treatment Facilities (City of Las Vegas, Clark County Sanitation District and City of Henderson) formed a committee to examine sampling and analytical protocols and to share information with the goal of maximizing the data quality. The group first met in April 1997.
It was agreed that an effort should be made to discuss and compare specific sampling and analytical techniques …
Storm And Base Flow Water Quality For Bear, Calf, And Tomahawk Creeks, Kenneth F. Steele, David N. Mott
Storm And Base Flow Water Quality For Bear, Calf, And Tomahawk Creeks, Kenneth F. Steele, David N. Mott
Technical Reports
Because of the conversion of 92,780 acres of forest to pasture land in the Buffalo River watershed over a 27 year period, there is concern about the affect of agricultural activities on the water quality of the river. Three tributaries (Bear, Calf and Tomahawk creeks) located about mid-length of the Buffalo River were chosen to investigate the affect of agricultural activity on water quality because these streams provide the greatest amounts of fecal bacteria, nitrate+nitrite and phosphorus to the river, despite comprising only 13% of the watershed.

Vegetated Filter Strip Removal Of Cattle Manure Constituents In Runoff, Teng T. Lim, Dwayne R. Edwards, Stephen R. Workman, Brian T. Larson, Lloyd Dunn
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Pasture runoff can contribute to elevated concentrations of nutrients, solids, and bacteria in downstream waters. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of vegetative filter strip (VFS) length on concentrations and transport of nitrogen, phosphorus, solids and fecal coliform in runoff from plots treated with cattle manure. Three plots with dimensions of 2.4 × 30.5 m were used. The upper 12.2 m of each plot was treated with cattle manure, while the lower 18.3 m acted as a VFS. Runoff produced by rainfall simulators was sampled at VFS lengths of 0, 6.1, 12.2, and 18.3 m and …

Effect Of Parameter Distributions On Uncertainty Analysis Of Hydrologic Models, C. Thomas Haan, Daniel E. Storm, T. Al-Issa, Sandeep Prabhu, George J. Sabbagh, Dwayne R. Edwards
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
Increasing concern about the accuracy of hydrologic and water quality models has prompted interest in procedures for evaluating the uncertainty associated with these models. If a Monte Carlo simulation is used in an uncertainty analysis, assumptions must be made relative to the probability distributions to assign to the model input parameters. Some have indicated that since these parameters can not be readily determined, uncertainty analysis is of limited value. In this article we have evaluated the impact of parameter distribution assumptions on estimates of model output uncertainty. We conclude that good estimates of the means and variances of the input …
Use Of Algal And Macroinvertebrate Indicators To Assess The Impact Of Agricultural Practices On Surface Water Quality In The Mammoth Cave National Park Region, Kentucky, Jeffrey D. Jack
KWRRI Research Reports
The karst aquifer underlying the Mammoth Cave area supports a unique and diverse cave aquatic ecosystem as well as providing the principal source of drinking water for many local residents of the region. This unique and fragile ecosystem is surrounded by one of the most intensively used agricultural areas in the Commonwealth with more than 80% of the surrounding region used in beef, dairy, burley tobacco and alfalfa production. Agricultural practices resulting in run-off of pollutants into the aquifer via sinkholes and sinking streams have a pronounced impact on an important drinking water source and on the cave ecosystem. The …

Kentucky River Basin Water Quality Assessment Study, L. Ormsbee, L. Jarrett, B. Perkins
KWRRI Research Reports
The current report summarizes the work associated with the construction, calibration, and application of the CE-QUAL-W2 water quality model to the Kentucky River. In applying the model to the Kentucky River System, the primary objective was to assess the impact of the operation of low-level control valves on water quality of the Kentucky River. This was accomplished by modeling the impact of the valves for low flow conditions associated with the 1930 drought of record along with projections for the year 2020. The results of this study indicate that for the modeled scenario, the proposed valves can be used to …

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Seepage Between A Contaminated Aquifer And Tributaries To The Ohio River, Alan E. Fryar, David L. Brown, David B. Wenner, Todd C. Rasmussen, Eric J. Wallin
KWRRI Research Reports
Because interactions between ground water and tributaries may influence contaminant loading to rivers, we delineated seepage along Little Bayou and Bayou Creeks in McCracken County, Kentucky, during a two-year period. From the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, on the divide between the creeks, trichloroethene and technetium-99 plumes extend several km toward the Ohio River. Gaining conditions occur where the creeks are incised into coarse sediments in the river's flood plain. Such conditions were marked by upward hydraulic gradients within the bed; maximum specific discharge (q) > 0.24 m d-1; relatively narrow ranges of stream, piezometer, and bed temperatures; relatively cool …

Las Vegas Wash, a natural wash east of the city of Las Vegas, Nevada, carries stormwater, groundwater drainage, and sewage effluent from three sewage treatment plants to Lake Mead. The Wash provides nearly the only surface water outlet for the entire 2,193 mi2 of Las Vegas Valley. A drainage area of 1,586 mi2 contributes directly to the Wash through surface flow which is channeled to Las Vegas Bay of Lake Mead, while drainage of the remaining 607 mi2 is presumably subsurface and may drain toward Las Vegas Wash.
In the 1930's and 1940's, sewage treatment plants were …

Application Of A Flow-Through Absorption Tube For Remotely Estimating Water-Quality Parameters, Charles Bostater, Melissa Keller, Manuel Gimond
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
A flow through absorption tube is described and applied. The tube is similar in concept to a 50 cm pathlength cylindrical cuvette described previously by Bostater and Gimond.' The new absorption tube allows for continuous, underway measurements of water absorption signatures. Water is allowed to flow through the tube, and in this way the spectral change or track ofabsorption can be measured as a function oftime or space when operated from a stationary or moving platform. Data gathered from various environments ranging from very turbid to clear water is analyzed and described. Concentrations of chlorophyll-a, suspended matter, and dissolved organic …
