Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The trials can be put into three groups: 1. Plus and minus ripping by species by bag nitrogen. This trial had a number of different species grown in 1982 and half of the trial was ripped in 1983 and the whole site sown to wheat with different rates of nitrogen applied to the subplots. Part of the information on the trial is contained in Bill Bowden's 1983 summary. 2. Species and management trials, namely 82LG5, 82Nl7, 82N041 and 82N03. 3. These trials had a number of different species grown in 1982 to which a number of management factors were applied …

A Description Of The Soils And Geology Of The Berkshire Valley Experimental Catchment, M R. Wells, D J. Mcfarlane

Resource management technical reports

Basic land resource data are provided in this report to assist an investigation of the effect of contour banking on surface runoff in the Berkshire Valley experimental catchement. Brief descriptions of the catchment's geology, soils and their inferred hydrological significance are provided and a 1:2000 scale map produced. Of major significance to the hydrologic study is the fact that soil depth and internal drainage conditions were found to be not related to landscape positions.

Pasture Research Programme For The Medium Rainfall Zone Of Wa, P. Dixon

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Pasture Research Programme for the Medium Rainfall Zone of W.A. - Species Selection and Management Related in Particular to the Ryegrass Toxicity Problem Since the early 1970's much of the ryegrass based pastures in the Pallinup region have been affected by Annual Ryegrass Toxicity (ARGT). Control of ryegrass by herbicides invariably leads to a reduction in the stock carrying capacity of the pasture since currently available legume species fail to grow or persist. This tendency is particularly evident on the hard setting loam soils of neutral to alkaline reaction. The aim of this project is to find alternative pasture species …

Residue Trials, Herbicide Incorporation And Leaching Of Chlorsulfuron, T Piper

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Residue Trials: Breakdown rates have been established for trifluralin at Wongan Hills and Avondale over the past two seasons. The decay curve follows a hyperbolic curve rather than the expected exponential curve with constant half life, probably due to the considerable loss of chemical by volatalization in the first few days, before biological decomposition takes over as the main breakdown factor.

b) Herbicide Incorporation. Du Pont Zl96 fluorescent orange powder at 30 g/m2 could be readily seen when illuminated by 400 yw/cm2 of 365 nm UV radiation, and was successfully photographed on Ektachrome 400 ASA film with a 4 sec. …

Pastoral Land Degradation: The Fitzroy As A Case Study, Alan L. Payne, Ronald B. Hacker Jan 1983

Pastoral Land Degradation: The Fitzroy As A Case Study, Alan L. Payne, Ronald B. Hacker

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

When large numbers of domestic livestock are superimposed on native vegetation in semi-arid and arid areas of the world, the ecological balance inevitably changes. In extreme cases these changes include such degradation as drastic losses of vegetation and active soil erosion. Areas affected in this way are unproductive for most purposes.

Western Australia's Fitzroy River valley has deteriorated in this way. Today, this once-productive grazing country is so degraded that it has become a matter of concern to Governments, the pastoral industry and others.

This article gives a brief history of land degradation in parts of the Fitzroy River valley, …

Annual Medics For The Kalgoorlie Region And Adjacent Eastern Rangeland Zones, G Gintzburger Jan 1983

Annual Medics For The Kalgoorlie Region And Adjacent Eastern Rangeland Zones, G Gintzburger

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Species selection and establishment methods Extensive overgrazing and burning of the dominant winter rainfall Goldfields pastoral zones have left large areas degraded with a poor annual vegetation cover of nearly no grazing value. Thus, more grazing pressure is exerted on shrubs and small trees accelerating the desertification process. Shrubs and trees are the main stabilising agent left in a rangeland plant community when alI annuals have been grazed out. In order to upgrade or regenerate some of these areas, conventional methods of grazing prohibition or deferred grazing can be used but often, improvement obtained are slow. It is hypothesized that …

Hydrological Studies In Soil Salinity, C J. Henschke Jan 1983

Hydrological Studies In Soil Salinity, C J. Henschke

Resource management technical reports

Investigations involved examination of near-surface indurated layers to investigate their role in saltland formation. It was found that groundwater could move readily through this layer due to the presence of macro-pores. Close examination of apparently impermeable pallid zone clays, shows that decayed tree roots and large diameter voids provide a continuous pathway for the veritical transport of saline water from deeper aquifers.
