3.1 Growth of doublegees under summer irrigation. (87A40)
The weevil, Perapion antiquum is a potential biological control agent of doublegee. However, it exhibits large population crashes during the summer months in the summer-dry areas of the Western Caped of South Africa, where it is native. It has been suggested that one means of successfully establishing Perapion in Western Australia could be to maintain populations in 'oases' over the summer months. The aim of this experiment was to determine how readily doublegee could be maintained in a non-senescent phase under irrigated and shaded conditions.
3.2 Doublegee demography in cereal crops (87GE30) …
Effect Of Different Chemical Treatments On Capeweed Control And Crop Yield., J. R. Peirce, B. J. Rayner
Effect Of Different Chemical Treatments On Capeweed Control And Crop Yield., J. R. Peirce, B. J. Rayner
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87WH60
Control of capweed was obtained using post-emergence in-crop herbicides. Good control was on most of the treatments applied before seeding.
Most products showed good ryegrass control are not usually effective, assume some other factor operating. Treatment usually associated with good ryegrass control have higher ryegrass densities than the treatments using herbicides with only broadleaved variety.
Although large reductions in density of silvergrass were obtained none was significantly better than the unsprayed. Some treatments particularly those favouring grass dominance allowed silvergrass density to build up.
Bromegrass appears to be very sensitive to competition from capeweed. Where there was high …

Lincoln Weed Control In Cereals And Pasture., I. Hudson, R. Ramm
Lincoln Weed Control In Cereals And Pasture., I. Hudson, R. Ramm
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87LG62 - Lincoln weed control in cereals.
Blanket treatment with Glyphosate controlled some ryegrass. Additional treatment with Glean killed nearly all the ryegrass and gave the best kill of Lincoln weed.
Trial 87LG63 - Control of weed in pasture.
Ally and Glean although giving control, would be considered too phytotoxic to use on legume pastures. Applications of 2,4-D amine at 1 L would give marginal safety on Subterranean clovers, but would cause significant damage to medics.
Control Of Wild Statice (Limonium Sinuatum) In Pasture., B. Kimber, R. Ramm
Control Of Wild Statice (Limonium Sinuatum) In Pasture., B. Kimber, R. Ramm
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87LG64
Wild Statice is a prolific seeder. Glean + diuron treatments, which were not included in trial gave good control, as did the farmer's treatment using Tribunil followed by heavy grazing. Later applications may be more effective because they may prevent seed formation for that year and also prevent the plant from recovering from spraying, as apparently with the early spraying.
Most chemical treatments would cause damage to broadleaved pasture.

The Tolerance Of Legumes To Broadleaf Herbicides., P. Stewart, L. Mann
The Tolerance Of Legumes To Broadleaf Herbicides., P. Stewart, L. Mann
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87KA52
The control of broadleaf weeds in leguminous pasture is of major concern because of the ability of these weeds to compete strongly with the leguminous plants. The presence of broadleaf weeds in pasture reduces the pastures nutritional value as well as total nitrogen fixation. There are many herbicides which are available to control broadleaf weeds, but most of these are registered for use in cereals. The amount of tolerance that leguminous pasture plants show to many of these herbicides and herbicide mixes is not known.
The experiments were designed to screen a large number of herbicides for legume …
Phenological And Reproductive Development Of The Four Major Grass Species, P. Stewart, L. Mann
Phenological And Reproductive Development Of The Four Major Grass Species, P. Stewart, L. Mann
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87KA51
The decision of when to spray is one of the major difficulties encountered when spraytopping grassy pasture for seed set control. Previous work has shown the general herbicide application timing window for the major grasses, but within this window, the amount of seed set control achieved can still be poor. Obviously timing within this window needs to be more rigorously defined. The fundamental question we need to answer is; when do the target grasses begin to produce viable seed in relation to their phenological development and in relation to other grass species? If we know this, then herbicide …
Effects Of Residue Levels Of Glean On Lupin Growth, And Possible Synergism By Hoegrass., Terry Piper, Patrick Pigott
Effects Of Residue Levels Of Glean On Lupin Growth, And Possible Synergism By Hoegrass., Terry Piper, Patrick Pigott
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87PE37
This trial was conducted to confirm the results of 86WH53 and 87WH64. The trial commenced in September and in a glasshouse thus temperatures were higher and growth faster then in the field trials.
There are no significant effects of soil applied Glean or Hoegrass, and no interaction between the two herbicides.
In contrast, there is a very significant stunting of plants by Glean applied post emergence if Hoegrass is co-applied, but not by Glean alone.
Effects Of Residue Levels Of Simazine On Wheat Growth, And Possible Synergism By Glean., Terry Piper, Patrick Pigott
Effects Of Residue Levels Of Simazine On Wheat Growth, And Possible Synergism By Glean., Terry Piper, Patrick Pigott
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87PE36
A previous field test 86N33 had suggested that an apparent simazine residue affect on wheat growth might be exacerbated by Glean. This trial was carried out to further test the herbicide combination.
Control Of Doublegee In Sub. Clover And Medic Pastures., P. Stewart, L. Mann
Control Of Doublegee In Sub. Clover And Medic Pastures., P. Stewart, L. Mann
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Trial 87ME61, 87ME68, 87WH49, 87ES39, 87NO80(B), 87NO80, 87WH67.
Doublegees in pasture are a major concern of many farmers in most of the agricultural areas in Western Australia. In pasture, doublegees tend to compete strongly the first year after crop and then decline in subsequent years. When cropped, doublegees again appear in large numbers. Unfortunately, the WADA recommendation for doublegee control in pasture of Tribunil at 850 g/ha is now very expensive at $17/ha. A possible alternative is 2,4-D amine, but medics are very sensitive to this. 2,4-DB is another recommendation, but this tends to have low efficacy against doublegees and …
