Trial 84M63

Residual value of phosphate fertilizers.

Location: South Carrabin Block of Merredin Research Station.

4th successive crop on new land. Trial has shown that the effectiveness of the different types of rock phosphate were about the fifth to one tenth as effective as the fresh (triple) superphosphate applied in 1984. The effectiveness of the superphosphate, decreased by 60 between year 1 and 2, and by a further 10-15% by 1987. This experiment will continue as pasture for 1988 and 1989, and will be re-cropped in 1990. The experiment is also assessing soil testing for P. but soil test data …

Evaluation Of New Pasture Legume Species In Terms Of Summer Feeding Value And Effects On Wool Production., S E. Flecker, C W. Thorn, J. B. Rowe, Tess Casson

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

86KA71, Pasture legumes improve the feeding value of summer pastures in a mediterranean-type environment by maintaining the protein intake of grazing animals over the dry summer period, much of which comes from the ingestion of legume burr (A.D. Wilson and N.L. Hindley, 1968). Some of the most important species of pasture legumes to have been released commercially are Trifolium subterraneum (sub.clover), Medicago truncatula (barrel medic) and Medicago polymorpha (burr medic) (D.B. Purser, G.B. Taylor and W.J. Collins, 1987). What little information is available on the feeding value of these species suggests that barrel medic pod (H. Brownlee, 1973) and dry …

The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines Jan 1987

The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Three liming experiments were established to confirm previous estimates of the critical soil acidity level for barley. Two experiments studying the effect of depth of incorporation on the effectiveness of lime, established in 1986, were continued in 1987.
The results from the three liming experiments established this year supported the conclusion that barley is affected by soil acidity at pH's around 4.2 and 4.3 (CaC12) and that depth of this acid layer is important.
Significant lime responses were obtained at the Katanning depth of lime incorporation site but conclusions can not be made because of possible mixing of …

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of Rangelands In The Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, A L. Payne, G F. Spencer, P J. Curry Jan 1987

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of Rangelands In The Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, A L. Payne, G F. Spencer, P J. Curry

Technical Bulletins

The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Carnarvon Basin, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1980 and 1982, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed covers …

Investigation Of A Saline Valley On Allandale Research Farm, D J. Mcfarlane, R Engel, A T. Ryder Jan 1987

Investigation Of A Saline Valley On Allandale Research Farm, D J. Mcfarlane, R Engel, A T. Ryder

Resource management technical reports

Geophysical surveys and drilling were used to investigate a saline valley on Allandale Research Farm. These techniques showed that the geology is controlling the location of two main areas of saline seeps and they identified another area at risk of increased salinity. They were also used to obtain information on the groundwater system and to assist in making management recommendations.

Electromagnetic terrain conductivity surveys showed that the most saline soils occurred upstream of a cross-cutting magnetic anomaly caused by a dolerite dyke. A seismic survey showed that the anomaly coincided with a bedrock rise. This bedrock rise restricts groundwater flow …

Evaluation Of Risk Factors Leading To Soil Destabilisation On The South Coastal Sandplain Of Western Australia, R V R Gwynn, P A. Findlater, J R. Edwards

Resource management technical reports

The problems of wind erosion in part of the south coast of Western Australian sandplain area were described previously (Gorddard et al, 1981) with 7.3 per cent of cleared and 18.3 per cent of the cropped area showing evidence of sand blasting. Department of Agriculture trials have shown that the loss of the top four millimetres of top soil from pastured paddocks can reduce following crop yields by up to 20 per cent (Marsh and Carter, 1983). Animal production problems associated with wind erosion of soils have not been quantified, but a number of problems such as reduced carrying capacity …

Field Peas In The Wheatbelt, R J. French Jan 1987

Field Peas In The Wheatbelt, R J. French

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Plantings of lupins in the Western Australian wheatbelt increased rapidly in the late 1970s and early 980s as improved varieties became available and farmers realised the benefits to be gained from growing grain legumes. Grain legumes are useful not simply as alternative cash crops. They provide 'fixed' atmospheric nitrogewn to following cereal crops and act as a cleaning crop to break cereal disease cycles. They are also valuable sheep feed.

In 1975, throughout the wheatbelt, the Department of Agriculture began a comparison of several alternative legumes. The crops included field peas, faba beans, chickpeas, lentills and various vetches. Field peas …
