15-An Archaeological Survey In Pavilion And Schoolcraft Townships, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, William M. Cremin, David G. De Fant, Diane L. Adams

Archaeological Reports

During the 1984 field season, Dr. William Cremin and the Western Michigan University archaeological field school continued the program of site location survey that had been initiated two years earlier in Pavilion Township (T3S RlOW), Kalamazoo County, Michigan. In addition, a small area flanking the north end of Barton Lake in nearby Schoolcraft Township (T4S RllW) was similarly evaluated. With the cooperation of numerous area landowners and local artifact collectors, almost 40 parcels of land aggregating 361 ha in Pavilion and 33 ha in Schoolcraft townships were surveyed by means of surface reconnaissance procedures. There follows a report of our …

Human/Animal Communication: Cetacean Roles In Human Therapeutic Situations, M. Patricia Hindley Jan 1984

Human/Animal Communication: Cetacean Roles In Human Therapeutic Situations, M. Patricia Hindley

Animal-Assisted Therapy Collection

A review of the literature on the relationship between animal and human indicates that whales and dolphins may have a mutually beneficial role to play in human therapeutic situations. Florida researchers have discovered that interaction with dolphins has favourably altered the behaviour of neurologically impaired people, and of autistic children who are usually withdrawn and uncommunicative.

Explorations with both wild and captive cetaceans may find suggestive direction from extensive research currently being done with pets and domestic animals. Growing scientific evidence suggests that animals can benefit not only the physically and mentally ill, the lonely and the incarcerated, but also …

Figurative Language And Speech Play: A Study Of First Grade Children, Dena Weiss-Tisman Jan 1984

Figurative Language And Speech Play: A Study Of First Grade Children, Dena Weiss-Tisman

Honors Papers

This paper is a study of figurative language and speech play in first grade children. I will describe what types of figurative language the children use and comprehend and discuss the role of figurative language, and specifically metaphor, in speech play. I will emphasize the need to study children's language using anthropological methods as a separate entity from adult language. In this chapter, I will present a survey of the literature concerning children's speech play and figurative language, and then I will provide a brief introduction to my work.

Attitudes Toward Animals: Age-Related Development Among Children, Stephen R. Kellert Jan 1984

Attitudes Toward Animals: Age-Related Development Among Children, Stephen R. Kellert

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

This paper reviews the results of a study of 267 children in the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th grades. A battery of tests was used to examine children's knowledge and attitudes towards animals, and behavioral contacts with animals. A typology of basic attitudes towards animals and appropriate scales was employed. Children's knowledge and attitudes towards animals were also compared to those of adults 18 years of age and over. Major differences occurred among children distinguished by age, sex, ethnicity, and urban/rural residence. Additionally, significant knowledge and attitude variations occurred among diverse animal-related activity groups (e.g., among children who hunted, birdwatched, …

Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren Jan 1984

Rethinking Ritual, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Recent works by students of contemporary ritual (or "ritologists," as Ronald Grimes calls them) supports the notion that ritual is an important variable not just in tribal culture but also in modern industrial culture. I'm referring to studies that have been undertaken by such ardent ritual exegetes as Roy Rappaport, Barbara Myerhoff, Ronald Grimes, Robert Bocock, Sally Falk Moore, and Richard Schechner. Grimes has begun the important work of consolidating research on ritual; he has taken a field of scholarship which was doggedly parochial and helped to expand it into a protoscience of its own. (1) The work of these …

Prehistory Of Long Valley, Idaho, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1984

Prehistory Of Long Valley, Idaho, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Archaeology/Anthropology

This thesis deals with a group of artifact collections gathered by local amateurs from a series of sites along the western shoreline of Cascade Reservoir. This study uses these artifacts as a basis to put together a preliminary view of Long Valley prehistory. Outlines of the basic artifact types are formulated and placed into a chronology based upon typological comparisons and obsidian hydration. Previous archaeological work, the ethnohistory, and local geology of the valley are discussed and related ot the sites, used in this study, in order to determine their patterns and characteristics. From these efforts directions for further research …
