Review Of Demographic Structure And Evolution Of A Peasant System: Guatemala By John D. Early, Luann Wandsnider
Review Of Demographic Structure And Evolution Of A Peasant System: Guatemala By John D. Early, Luann Wandsnider
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The Guatemalan peasant system of twenty to thirty years ago is rapidly changing into something else-not quite peasant-like and not quite industrial. The author uses demographic information in the form of birth and death registration (from 1877 on), as well as data from national censuses, to discuss the demographic transition and how it parallels Guatemala's socioeconomic evolution. The book is divided into six parts, of varying utility and interest, linked by the common theme of Guatemalan demography.

Ld50: A Cruel Waste Of Animals
Ld50: A Cruel Waste Of Animals
Close Up Reports
Imagine a test in which up to 100 animals are forced to consume a toxic substance in an amount high enough to kill half of them. Then imagine that the explicit purpose of the test is to kill those animals. Incredibly, such a test not only exists but each year also claims the lives of from two to four million animals.
The test is the lethal dose 50, or LD50 as it's commonly called. Its purpose is to measure the toxicity of a substance by determining how much of that substance will kill half of a group of some 60-100 …

Multivariate Discriminant Function Analyses Of The Mandible In American Caucasoid And American Negroid Populations, Dorn P. Kile
Multivariate Discriminant Function Analyses Of The Mandible In American Caucasoid And American Negroid Populations, Dorn P. Kile
Masters Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a statistical method whereby the race and sex of an unknown individual may be ascertained from measurements taken from the mandible alone. Twenty-five such measurements were obtained from 160 mandibles representing, equally, American male and female Negro and Caucasian individuals. The skeletal collection used was the Terry collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
The data obtained were analyzed by nine separate discriminate functions representing various aspects of the mandible, including one which discriminated the samples by race only.
To test the significance and reliability of using such a procedure for …

The Demography, Long Bone Growth, And Pathology Of A Middle Archaic Skeletal Population From Middle Tennessee: The Anderson Site (40wm9), Bonnie C. Joerschke
Masters Theses
A biological examination of the skeletal remains from the Anderson site, 40WM9, Williamson County, Tennessee, was conducted to provide information about the nature of Middle Archaic populations from Middle Tennessee. Vital statistics were reconstructed by means of a life table assuming stable population conditions. Results of this analysis indicate a pattern of low infant/child mortality and high adult mortality. Life expectancy at birth was 23 years and the crude death rate was 43 per 1000 per annum.
The health status of the Anderson population was further inferred through investigations of long bone growth and bone pathologies. The long bone growth …
Mortuary Patterning Within The Dallas Culture At Toqua, Gary T. Scott
Mortuary Patterning Within The Dallas Culture At Toqua, Gary T. Scott
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the mortuary patterning at Toqua, a late Mississippian site on the Little Tennessee River in East Tennessee. Analytical considerations included testing an energy expenditure model based on burial pit size, shape, modifications, location, and grave associations.
The sample included 533 individuals from 511 burials. Non-random patterning of intra-site burial traits indicated the presence of social stratification at the chiefdom level of socio-cultural integration. There were five distinct site areas, two mounds, two villages and a structure, which were analyzed and ordered according to relative social ranking. Mound A (N=115) contained individuals with …

Patterns Of Infant Mortality In The Upper St. John Valley French Population: 1791-1838, Marcella H. Sorg, Beatrice C. Craig
Anthropology Faculty Scholarship
The purpose of this paper is to provide a descriptive analysis of infant mortality patterns in a pre-industrial North American population, the Madawaska French of the upper St. John Valley. A synchronic approach was taken in examining a series of 320 infant deaths identified through family reconstitution. The infant mortality rate for the series is 132 per 1000, low compared to other pre-industrial populations. The large average completed family size of 11.34 is associated with short birth intervals averaging 21.9 months. Women who experience infant mortality were found to have significantly larger completed families that those who did not. Infant …

62-Archaeobotanical Remains From Eight Sites In The Northfield, Burning Star Mine # 4, Perry County, Illinois, William M. Cremin
Reports of Investigations
The Northfield research area of Consolidation Coal Company's Burning Star Mine # 4 flanks Upper Galum Creek, a tributary of the Big Muddy River in Perry County, Illinois. It is situated within the Southern Till Plains Division (Mt. Vernon Hill Country), an area.of mature topography evidencing low relief, gently rolling hills, and broad alluvial valleys. Although, floristically speakin~, the Galum Creek drainage is included within the Oak-Hickory Forest Region of the Western Mesophytic Forest (Braun.l950), the local vegetative pattern is best described as prairie-forest ecotone.
Monoculture, Polyculture, And Polyvariety In Tropical Forest Swidden Cultivation, Raymond B. Hames
Monoculture, Polyculture, And Polyvariety In Tropical Forest Swidden Cultivation, Raymond B. Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
A number of researchers have suggested that polyculture is characteristic of native tropical forest swiddens and have adduced theory from community ecology to account for its adaptiveness. Ye’kwana and Yąnomamö swidden cultivation is examined, and it is shown that polyculture is not practiced to any significant degree. Instead, the concept of polyvariety is introduced along with a number of other cultivation practices that more simply account for the adaptiveness of Ye’kwana and Yąnomamö gardening. In addition, comparative data from other parts of the tropical world indicate that polyculture is no more common than monoculture and recent advances in ecological research …

Historical Trends In American Animal Use And Perception, Stephen R. Kellert, Miriam O. Westervelt
Attitudes Towards Animals Collection
Changes in American attitudes and behaviors toward animals from 1900-1976 will be examined. The data are derived from an empirical analysis of 4,873 animalrelated newspaper articles. Four newspapers were used in this analysis- the Los Angeles Times; Hartford Courant; Buffalo, Wyoming Bulletin; and the Dawson, Georgia News. A content analysis procedure was employed to record animal-related information in the articles, and these data were subjected to a variety of statistical analyses. A comparison of the results with a 1978 national survey of American attitudes and behaviors is briefly attempted. Finally, some policy implications of the data are considered.

Achieving A Concensus On Dog Control Strategies: A Brief Primer, D. B. Wilkins
Pets Collection
The welfare arguments surrounding dog ownership may not stimulate the same passionate fervor as those relating to the use of animals in experiments, factory farming, or the hunting of live animals with hounds, but nevertheless, they are matters of real concern to most welfare organizations. The most serious problems are caused through irresponsible ownership, which leads to overbreeding and the inevitable consequence of large numbers
Some Preliminary Thoughts On Permitting Animals To Sue In Contract And Tort, Henry Cohen
Some Preliminary Thoughts On Permitting Animals To Sue In Contract And Tort, Henry Cohen
Laws and Legislation Collection
Animal protection statutes are of course extremely valuable, and they might be made even more so if they were formulated to give private rights of action to their beneficiaries--the animals themselves. But what I would like to explore here is the idea of extending common law rights of action to animals. Admittedly, permitting animals to sue in contract and tort now seems fanciful, but my hope is that this article will provide an initial step toward bringing it about.
Does Wildlife Have Legal Standing? - The Penguin Case In Patagonia, Pedro Tarak
Does Wildlife Have Legal Standing? - The Penguin Case In Patagonia, Pedro Tarak
Laws and Legislation Collection
The Magellan penguin populations in the Patagonian province of Argentina were recently threatened by a proposed joint Japanese-Argentine venture to exploit them on a massive scale. The firm, Hinode Penguin Argentina, wished to begin slaughtering what it termed "excess" penguins, and to process the dead birds into skins for the world market; the carcasses were to be converted to a protein extract for local consumption.
Upon learning about this venture, Argentine conservation groups mobilized their forces quickly- formulating and implementing media campaigns, soliciting scientific opinions from local and worldwide experts, and concocting legal strategies. The legal tactics alone, although initially …
The State Of The Economy And Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox
The State Of The Economy And Animal Welfare, Michael W. Fox
Animal Welfare Collection
An economic depression inevitably means that the under-privileged are compelled to suffer, but the plight of animals during "hard times" is often overlooked. Further, the present administration's budget cuts, and the pro-industry policies expressed by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Interior, in conjunction with the attempted financial emasculation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (responsible for enforcing the Animal Welfare Act), all add insult to injury. Clearly, in such difficult economic times, the needs of people will inevitably take precedence over those of animals. But a society that unconditionally places …
The Care Of Pets Within Child Abusing Families, Elizabeth Deviney, Jeffery Dickert, Randall Lockwood
The Care Of Pets Within Child Abusing Families, Elizabeth Deviney, Jeffery Dickert, Randall Lockwood
Animal Welfare Collection
The treatment of animals was surveyed in 53 families in which child abuse had occurred. Patterns of pet ownership, attitudes towards pets and quality of veterinary care did not differ greatly from comparable data from the general public. However, abuse of pets by a family member had taken place in 60 percent of the families. The families in which animal abuse was indicated tended to have younger pets, lower levels of veterinary care and more conflicts over care than non-abusive families in the study. There were several parallels between the treatment of pets and the treatment of animals within child-abusing …

Survey, Testing And Assessment Of Cultural Resources In Portions Of Willacy County Drainage District No. 1, Willacy County, Texas, Patricia A. Mercado-Allinger
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Two archeological projects were undertaken in the fall of 1982 by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. Both projects were authorized by the Willacy County Drainage District No. 1.
The first investigation was an archeological survey to locate, record and assess previously unknown cultural resources which potentially could be affected by proposed drainage ditch development (Main Floodway Channel) in the central county area. Field inspections of this proposed alignment detected 24 archeological sites. Fourteen of these recorded sites are classified as isolated finds which are presumed to be prehistoric . The remaining ten resources are classified as sites, six containing prehistoric materials …

Arroyo De Los Muertos And Other Prehistoric Terrace Sites Along The Rio Grande, Laredo, Texas, A. Joachim Mcgraw
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During early 1980, personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, were involved in intensive survey and limited testing operations at archaeological sites in a proposed pipeline right-of-way along the Rio Grande, Webb County, Texas. Eight terrace sites, located just south of the city of Laredo, were investigated to determine potential eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places and for selection as State Historical Landmarks. Both historic and prehistoric cultural materials were identified at these sites including the remains of two previously unrecorded prehistoric burials.

The Berger Bluff Site (41gd30a): Excavations In The Upper Deposits, 1979., David O. Brown
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During summer 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research conducted excavations at the Berger Bluff site (41 GO 30A) in Goliad County, Texas. The site, located on a high bluff above Coleto Creek, had been shown to be a valuable archaeological resource in previous test excavations and was potentially endangered by wave erosion from the waters of the soon to be completed Coleto Creek Reservoir. The excavations were considered necessary as a partial mitigation, under the provisions of the Texas Antiquities Code.
A single three by four meter excavation unit was opened at the site. Depth of this excavation unit varied …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
An analysis of the 1982 field season activities at Rancho de las Cabras (41 WN 30) is presented in this report. Additional data concerning structural details and construction activities at the site are presented. The results of further archival research provide additional information concerning the history of the Rancho de las Cabras site, its relationship to Mission Espada, and the adjacent landowners. An expanded genealogy is presented of the Calvillo and Delgado families, both intimately connected to Rancho de las Cabras. Recommendations are made for further work at the site.
