12-Phase I Archeological Survey Of The Proposed Fishing Access Site At Calkins Bridge Dam, Allegan County, Michigan, Elizabeth B. Garland

Archaeological Technical Reports

Initiation of Project

In February of 1983 I was contacted by the State Archaeologist, Dr. John Halsey, regarding plans by the Department of Natural Resources 1 to develop a fishing access site at the Calkins Bridge Dam on the Kalamazoo River in Sec. 15 of Valley Township, Allegan County. Specifically, Dr. Halsey enquired whether this project would adversely affect the Elam Site (20AE195) an important prehistoric site situated near this locality (Figure 1). I info:nmed Dr. Halsey that the Elam Site would not be directly affected, but that the area for the proposed parking lot south of Allegan Dam Road …

14-Archaeological Site Location Survey Of M-44 (East Belt Line), I-96 To 7 Mile Road, Kent County, Michigan, William M. Cremin

Archaeological Technical Reports

Between 21-23 Jun 1983, a team of archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology, W~stern Michigan University conducted a Phase I site_ location survey along M-44 (East Belt Line) from 7 Mile Road in Plainfield Township to I-96 in Grand Rapids Township, Kent County, Michigan. Systematic and intensive on-site evaluation of the project area was accomplished by means of a combination of surface reconnaissance and shovel testing procedures.

The data available to the team prior to the initiation of fieldwork indicated that six archaeological sites occurred in the general area of the project, with perhaps three of these sites lying, at …

16-Archaeological Test Excavations At The Yacht Harbor Site (20va57), City Of South Haven, Michigan, William M. Cremin

Archaeological Technical Reports

With the execution of a contract (dated 29 Oct 84) between the Yacht Harbor Development Company and Western Michigan University, authorizing Phase II archaeological assessment of the Yacht Harbor site (20VA57) in the City of South Haven, Michigan, the project Principal Investigator, Dr. William M. Cremin, undertook to design a data recovery strategy, hire the research team, and procure the equipment and supplies necessary to conduct test excavations at this site. The research team then moved to the site, where the Phase II investigation was accomplished on 3-4 Nov 84. There follows a report of the program of research undertaken …

11-Archaeological Test Excavations At The Galesburg Rest Area, Comstock Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, William M. Cremin

Archaeological Technical Reports

During late October 1982, a team of archaeologists from Western Michigan University conducted Phase II test excavations at three prehistoric sites located in the Galesburg Rest Area project along westbound I-94 in Comstock Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Assessment in each case was achieved by means of a one percent random sample of the estimated site area. A mix of 1 X 1 m and 2 X 2m test squares was utilized, with the soil from each being processed through 6 mm mesh screen to facilitate the recovery of cultural material. Standard methods of recording the data were employed.

Although each …

Aliabad Women: Revolution As Religious Activity, Mary E. Hegland Jan 1983

Aliabad Women: Revolution As Religious Activity, Mary E. Hegland

Faculty Publications

An apparent paradox of the Iranian Revolution has been the tremendous participation of Iranian women in the revolution, in terms of the numbers of women who were active in demonstrations, contrasted to the subsequent setbacks in the position of women in Iran and their decreasing participation in public life. In this chapter, I argue that the great majority of women participating in the revolution did not consider their actions to be outside of traditional social, cultural and religious parameters. Neither did they expect their participation in the revolution to be the first step in gaining improved status and more important …

13- An Archaeological Evaluation Of The M-43/M-89 Intersection North Of The Village Of Richland, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, William M. Cremin, Caven P. Clark

Archaeological Technical Reports

On 1 Jun 83, the authors conducted a Phase I site location survey of 1.5 ha of land adjacent to the M-43/M-89 intersection one mile north of the Village of Richland, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Systematic and intensive evaluation of the project area was accomplished by means of a combination of surface reconnaissance and shovel testing procedures.

Our fieldwork resulted in quick confirmation of the historic Andrew Jackson site (20KZ112) in the NW quadrant of the intersection (SE corner of Section 10), and we also recorded a· second site, the Curtis Farmstead (20KZ189), in the SW quadrant (NE corner of Section …

Manioc And Fish: A "Methiononian" Compromise In Amazonia?, Tom Langdon

Nebraska Anthropologist

Protein as a limiting factor in Amazonian diet has met with considerable discussion and argument (e.g., Beckerman 1979; Chagnon and Hames 1979; Johnson 1982; Gross 1975, 1982; Spath 1978, 1981; Werner et al. 1979). The intent of this paper is to continue the discussion of protein as a limiting factor in Amazonia with respect to two dietary staples, manioc and fish. More specifically, does bitter manioc become a factor in determining aquatic resource utilization in Amazonia?

The Plow And Its Influence On The Rise Of Civilization, Tom Langdon Jan 1983

The Plow And Its Influence On The Rise Of Civilization, Tom Langdon

Nebraska Anthropologist

In the magical land of Toosuiter, Butane worked his small garden. He worked with his little digging stick clearing the patch of eternal rock that seemed to multiply from one season to the next. Then he'd sing the little redundant ditty: "Little poke here, little seed there, little poke here, little seed there."

He planted his seeds and delicately covered them up with the fresh fertile earth. Yams were a delicacy. They really "tasted good" with the fresh meat that Pamela, his wife, would hunt in the surrounding forest. It was a magical life, and the land and the forest …

The Question Of Atheism And Communism In The Animal Welfare/Rights Movement, Michael W. Fox Jan 1983

The Question Of Atheism And Communism In The Animal Welfare/Rights Movement, Michael W. Fox

Animal Welfare Collection

Just as economics has increasingly been employed as a political weapon, so religion is now being used to further self-serving goals. Agribusiness spokespersons not only use fallacious economic arguments to justify the "factory" farming of animals; they have also stated that any questioning about man's Godgiven right to exploit animals is atheistic, and perhaps an actual affront to God's will. Furthermore, taking an egalitarian attitude toward animals, and proposing that they have rights or should be given equal and fair consideration, is regarded as the inspiration of some covert communist conspiracy that is constantly working to restructure and thereby destroy …

Sex Roles, Companion Animals--And Something More, D. H. Murphy

Pets Collection

As a case in point, several recent articles about how men and women relate to dogs and cats furnish us with some basic lessons about how we interact with our animal companions. But, in the process, they also shed some interesting light on the precariousness of our beliefs about differences in the sexes. Finally, they provide vital instruction concerning some of the classic foibles that are inherent in the use of some kinds of scientific methods.

Some Rights For Animal Therapists: Better Science And Better Welfare, Dana H. Murphy Jan 1983

Some Rights For Animal Therapists: Better Science And Better Welfare, Dana H. Murphy

Animal-Assisted Therapy Collection

"Animal-facilitated therapy." The phrase has a nice, solid ring to it, doesn't it? And it also sounds like an idea that nearly everyone could agree to endorse, like democracy and vacations. But a closer scrutiny of some of the available literature on the use of animals as adjuncts in situations like nursing homes and outpatient psychotherapy reveals a number of deficiencies. While there is probably nothing wrong with the fundamental concept- ideally, people and animals are helping each other to become more useful and independentthere are some real problems in two areas: the dubious level of scientific rigor in many …

The Ld50--The Beginning Of The End, Andrew N. Rowan Jan 1983

The Ld50--The Beginning Of The End, Andrew N. Rowan

Experimentation Collection

Measurement is very important in science. Early lessons in the science classroom involve teaching students to measure lengths, volumes, weights, specific gravities and anything else within the mental and economic compass of the teacher. At the same time, the question of significance is drummed into the students' heads. Thus, if one has a meter-rule which is subdivided into centimeters (but not millimeters), one is taught that the measurement of its length to one decimal point (for example, 10.3 em) is acceptable, but that the addition of any more figures (for example, 10.325 em) is mere braggadocio. The eye can only …
