A Folkloristic Approach To Storytelling Performances By A Contemporary Librarian, Victoria Middleswarth Aug 1977

A Folkloristic Approach To Storytelling Performances By A Contemporary Librarian, Victoria Middleswarth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The subject of this study is Thelma Freeman, the children's librarian at the Bowling Green Public Library. Mrs. Freeman has worked for the library for fourteen years, beginning in 1964 as a bookmobile driver and later transferring into the library building as children's librarian. The story hour on which this study centers was instituted in 1967 when Mrs. Freeman became the Bowling Green Library's first children's librarian. Although she probably acquired her storytelling art through observation and adoption of her mother's storytelling technique and through experience with her children and grandchildren, Mrs. Freeman also took an undergraduate-level library science course …

Hsus Spotlights Circus Cruelty

Close Up Reports

Who can deny the sense of excitement the young and the young-at-heart feel when the circus comes to town? The sounds, smells, and attractions create a fantasy world where everything is fun.

But is it all good clean fun? Evidence in recent years suggests quite the contrary. The worst problems seem to be with the smaller circuses. In the past year, The HSUS has assisted several local societies investigating cruelty to animals in traveling circuses, rescued elephants and lions abandoned by a circus, and signed three complaints against one of the largest of today's small big tops.

According to Frantz …

Middle And Late Archaic Mortuary Patterning: An Example From The Western Tennessee Valley, Ann L. Magennis Aug 1977

Middle And Late Archaic Mortuary Patterning: An Example From The Western Tennessee Valley, Ann L. Magennis

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the social organization and structure of Middle and Late Archaic populations in the western Tennessee Valley. The stratified Middle and Late Archaic Eva site yielded a temporally sequential skeletal series that allowed for the examination of changes in social and demographic structure through time at a single site. Comparison of the Late Archaic Eva series with the Late Archaic Cherry sample facilitated the examination of spatial differences in these two parameters.

Results of the analysis of mortuary activity indicate that there was little elaboration in the mortuary ritual and that …

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter, Vol. 13, Northeast Archives Of Folklore And Oral History

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter

Argyle Boom, Vol. XVII of Northeast Folklore, is now being sent to Northeast Folklore Society members and libraries, and is ready for sale from our office. It is a readable book on what at first appears to be an unreadable subject. Written and edited mostly by Sandy Ives, with a back up crew of some twelve fieldwork students and eighteen informants, the book covers (in the usual exhaustive Ives Style) the description, operation, and peripheral data of the Argyle Boom and neighboring booms as they existed in the first two decades of the 20th century. An enormous operation in its …

“They Made Us Dance In The Pig Trough!” Mrs. Blanche Story’S Oral Accounts Of Dating, Courtship, Marriage And Sexual Attitudes In Northcentral Nebraska, 1885-1910, Gayle Waggoner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Oral recollections concerning dating, courtship, marriage and related attitudes were collected from a single informant, Mrs. Blanche Story of Butte, Nebraska. Through in-depth questioning during twelve tape-recorded interview sessions, value- and attitude-oriented accounts were secured for the years 1885 to 1910, the late frontier period in northcentral Nebraska. These detailed reminiscences focus on common life experiences related to interpersonal relationships and the institutions related to them, resulting in a personal or folk history. The single greatest problem in research was the lack of documentation for the attitudinal content of the texts. Corroboration of both specific information and broad patterns of …

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn Jul 1977

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn

Anthropology Department: Theses

Anthropological interest in human exploitation of resources has increased considerably during the last decade. Archaeological and ethnological literature concerning man's utilization of the world's oceans is relatively abundant and there are now several on-going anthropological research programs, e.g., Aleutian Islands, Pacific Northwest Coast, California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Southern Africa which focus primarily on maritime adaptations. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to suggest that anthropological assumptions regarding marine food resources and their use are inadequate; (2) to examine marine ecosystems with respect to structure and dynamics, primary productivity, ecological efficiencies, distributional and quantitative …

Fandom Is A Way Of Life: A Folkloristic Ethnography Of Science Fiction Fandom, David Axler Jun 1977

Fandom Is A Way Of Life: A Folkloristic Ethnography Of Science Fiction Fandom, David Axler

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A science fiction (“sf”) fan is an individual whose interest in this literary genre has extended past reading into involvement in such things as local science fiction clubs, fan magazines (“fanzines”), and sf conventions (“cons”). Science fiction fandom is the loosely-structured, geographically-dispersed organization of these fans. Drawing on both written sources and field interviews with eight informants, the history, composition and structure of sf fandom is examined from a folkloristic viewpoint. The forms of folklore which serve to bind the individual fan to the larger social entity of fandom are detailed.

Despite its literary orientation, fandom is primarily a social …

Traditional Elements In The Selected Columns Of Allan M. Trout, J. Vaughn Webb Jun 1977

Traditional Elements In The Selected Columns Of Allan M. Trout, J. Vaughn Webb

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The first and last three months of Allan M. Trout's newspaper column "Greetings" were analyzed to show Trout's use of traditional material in that feature. An overview of previous scholarship concerning folklore in literature revealed a lack of study of the modern newspaper as a transmitter of folk items. The type of feature which Trout wrote was shown to have developed from pre-Civil War journalism. Trout's conception of folklore as a rural, kinetic process was presented through quotations from his books and columns, and "Greetings" was defined as a part of that process rather than as a static literary work. …

The Price Of Folk: The Progression Of Two Decoy Makers’ Work From Folk To Non-Folk, Benjamin Vincent Jun 1977

The Price Of Folk: The Progression Of Two Decoy Makers’ Work From Folk To Non-Folk, Benjamin Vincent

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Applying the standards for delineating folkcraft developed by Japanese scholar Soetsu Yanagi to the work of two Maryland decoy makers, Lem and Steve Ward, revealed that the Wards’ work followed a progression from folk to non-folk. A Hearst newspaper chain article on the two carvers plus winning first place at the New York Decoy Show brought publicity far beyond that usually encountered by the average folk craftsman. These events also exposed the two brothers to a range of wealthy collectors. When the Wards began to experiment with ornately carved birds, they had a waiting, and financially capable market. The extremely …

An Analysis Of The Morrow Mountain Component At The Icehouse Bottom Site And A Reassessment Of The Morrow Mountain Complex, Patricia A. Cridlebaugh Jun 1977

An Analysis Of The Morrow Mountain Component At The Icehouse Bottom Site And A Reassessment Of The Morrow Mountain Complex, Patricia A. Cridlebaugh

Masters Theses

Stratified Middle Archaic Stanly and Morrow Mountain components discovered in 1975 at the Icehouse Bottom site (40MR23) in the Little Tennessee River Valley provided data comparable with that reported by Joffre L. Coe (1964) from the North Carolina Piedmont Province. The 1976 excavation of the Howard site (40MR66) in the Little Tennessee River Valley added to that information pertaining to stratified Stanly and Morrow Mountain components in the Ridge and Valley Province of Tennessee.

Analysis of the Morrow Mountain component from Icehouse Bottom is presented in this study; this site is emphasized as a result of the additional and new …

A Zooarchaeological Analysis Of The Mississippian Faunal Remains From The Normandy Reservoir, Neil Douglas Robison Jun 1977

A Zooarchaeological Analysis Of The Mississippian Faunal Remains From The Normandy Reservoir, Neil Douglas Robison

Masters Theses

The faunal remains from the Mississippian components on three archaeological sites (40CF111, 40CF32, and 40CF5) along the Duck River in the Normandy Reservoir, Coffee County, Tennessee, were analyzed for this study. From the three sites combined, 56,664 pieces of bone were examined of which 1,903 were identifiable to at least the family level; a minimum of 18 species of mammals, 5 birds, 7 reptiles, 4 amphibians, and 8 species of fish were represented. In addition, 4,922 identifiable gastropod shells from 12 species and 30 freshwater mussel valves from 4 species were identified from 40CF111 and 40CF32. The faunal species represented …

Prehistoric Settlement And Subsistence Patterns In The Great Smoky Mountains, Quentin R. Bass Ii Jun 1977

Prehistoric Settlement And Subsistence Patterns In The Great Smoky Mountains, Quentin R. Bass Ii

Masters Theses

Data derived from 205 sites located in the 1975 survey (National Park Service Contract Number CX500050211) and the McPherson/Wilburn survey (1936-1941) have defined a cultural prehistory for the Great Smoky Mountains spanning approximately 8,000 years. The Great Smoky Mountains were first occupied, albeit ephemerally, during the Early Archaic period. This was followed by more intensive occupations of the region during the successive broadly-defined Middle Archaic through historic Cherokee phases. The data reflect changing settlement and subsistence patterns during these periods. Study of the temporal and spatial distribution of lithic materials illustrates significant shifts in the utilization of lithic resources. These …

Lntercultural Adjustment In An Academic Enrichment Program, Mary Frances Samuel Ricks May 1977

Lntercultural Adjustment In An Academic Enrichment Program, Mary Frances Samuel Ricks

Dissertations and Theses

This paper is a description and examination of an Academic Enrichment Program for students from a Bureau of Indian Affairs Day School in Stebbins, Alaska. Sixty Eskimo students travelled to Beaverton, Oregon in the winter of 1975, accompanied by their teachers and by village representatives. They were enrolled in Beaverton schools for a six-week period, and participated in a program designed to acquaint them with aspects of American culture previously known to them only through their textbooks.

The major emphasis here is on description of the interface between two cultural systems. While there is an attempt to identify the problems …

The Acquisition Of Locatives In Estonian, Helgi Kasak Osterreich May 1977

The Acquisition Of Locatives In Estonian, Helgi Kasak Osterreich

Anthropology ETDs

The study and explanation of language acquisition has been approached from four major theoretical viewpoints. 1) The syntactic: what a child is mainly learning is grammatical structures, and the syntactic complexity of the language he is learning determines the sequence of acquisition; 2) The semantic: the child is really learning the meaning structures of language, and the semantic complexity of the adult language determines the sequence of acquisition; 3) The cognitive: as the child gains knowledge about the world around him, he tries to express it through language; the child's cognitive structures and therefore the major determinants of what he …
