Indigenous Philosophy In The Valley Of Mexico, John F. Newcomer
Indigenous Philosophy In The Valley Of Mexico, John F. Newcomer
Philosophy ETDs
This study has been undertaken in the hope of helping to open new avenues of research in both philosophy and anthropology, avenues that have heretofore been largely overlooked. It has used as an example the pre-Conquest culture-complex of the Valley of Mexico. It is not intended to be an exhaustive exposition of every aspect of that complex, for that would take it out of the realm of philosophy and too far into that of anthropology. It is rather an examination of the salient features of Aztec culture in a philosophical light. It begins with a discussion of primitive philosophy in …
The Kachina Cult Of The Pueblo Indians, Frank Gibbs Anderson
The Kachina Cult Of The Pueblo Indians, Frank Gibbs Anderson
Anthropology ETDs
In a recently published textbook in general anthropology, the following statement is made: "Religion by its very nature is a conservative institution and changes slowly to meet new demands." This idea that a society, particularly a primitive society, is in general more conservative with regard to the religious aspects of its culture than in any other respect, is of course not a new one. It has received expression by many anthropologists and sociologists, and others, over a period of many years, and its mere reiteration leads us to suspect that it has some validity. As Jacobs and Stern point out, …

Arctic Gold, Alaska, Joel Halpern
Arctic Gold, Alaska, Joel Halpern
Joel M. Halpern
To armchair travelers, especially in the United States, few places have a stronger allure than far-off Alaska. Now that the "wild and woolly" west is really alive only so far as it serves to accentuate our historical heritage, this land of the far north has become our last frontier. To the geologist, mineralogist, and, I might add, even to the layman, one of the most interesting features of the territory is its large placer gold deposits. Every American boy has heard of the Nome gold rush, and the more literarily adventurous have undoubtedly delved into the sagas of Jack London. …

An Evaluation Of Economic Factors In Cochiti Pueblo Culture Change, Charles H. Lange
An Evaluation Of Economic Factors In Cochiti Pueblo Culture Change, Charles H. Lange
Anthropology ETDs
The fact that constant and continual changes occur in the culture of any society, regardless of time and space considerations, has long been recognized as a fundamental truth by anthropologists. Accepting this dynamic character of culture, the anthropologist asks precisely what has occurred that has caused the culture of any particular society to be as it is at the moment, or as it was found at any specific time in the past. Having learned the cultural situation at a given time and having determined the sequence of events culminating in this situation, the anthropologist has further interests. Why did these …
