Counting Systems Of North American Indians, Helen F. Stevenson
Counting Systems Of North American Indians, Helen F. Stevenson
Anthropology ETDs
The following paper is a study of the numeral systems of North American Indian tribes. Not only the basic systems of counting are considered but, also, the recording devices, the words used for basic numbers with their concrete meanings, "magic" or "pattern" numbers and their relationship, if any, to the system of numeration. Not all of this material is recorded for every tribe; therefore only in so far as material is available is the study complete.
The object of the study is to examine the recorded data on numeration systems and to show the extent of correlation with linguistic and …
A Preliminary Sketch Of Keresan Grammar, Robert Francis Spencer
A Preliminary Sketch Of Keresan Grammar, Robert Francis Spencer
Anthropology ETDs
It will be well here to outline briefly Keresan grammar before embarking on a more detailed technical discussion. I do not and cannot hope to present a full grammar of a highly complex linguistic system. There are many points in the grammar of the language which must remain obscure or at which I can merely suggest. A good many more years of field-work would be necessary before even a partially complete analysis could be presented; I attempt to offer only an outline, thereby suggesting and discussing the more salient grammatical features, and presenting a shell of what I consider to …
